Code July Day 31: Free Day
Butterfly Yumi in my Mythic AU (Also known as Project Chrysalis)
Tumblr media
There are a few minor changes of this design actually... Mostly the motif on her red side of the kimono, the bracelet, the tasseled rope on her sash, and last but not least, the antenna hair. Plus I'm experimenting with the glitter pens on her kimono and wings.
Species is based of a Peacock swallowtail butterfly (Papilio blumei)
AMV inspiration:
youtube
Character design inspiration:
-Shinobu Kocho and Kanao Tsuyuri from Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer. These two are my favorite characters from that anime btw.
-There are some fanmade Butterfly miraculous artwork from Miraculous Ladybug. Also it's just a coincidence that there are a few of fanmade Butterfly Miraculous holders named "Chrysalis" lmao

I gotta tell you abt something that’s been mildly irritating me
My mom bought me a pinned swallowtail for my birthday (sweet and thoughtful) however she knows fuck all about insects
So this swallowtail is incorrectly labeled as Papilio blumei (green swallowtail) and not the one that it actually is which looks NOTHING LIKE A GREEN SWALLOWTAIL it is a red Helen dude I’m losing my mind
That is actually really irritating holy shit

Is this butterfly blue or green?
by Vanessa Verdecia
Tumblr media
An image of a beautiful “blue” butterfly.  What kind is it, they asked me?  That’s not always an easy question to answer.  The first thing I knew was that this butterfly was in the family Papilionidae. That determination was made based on the tails seen on the hindwings, giving the family its common name of Swallowtail butterflies.  It’s a good thing the Carnegie has a wonderful reference collection of butterfly specimens that is also complemented with an extensive library of scientific literature that should give me a good shot at figuring out what this beautiful specimen might be.
I started with some of the amazing picture books in the library because all I had was a single image of a specimen to identify with no visible clues from the image that might show what region of the world the specimen was collected from.  After searching through the historical collection for curated and identified specimens to compare to the image, and perusing through dozens of drawers of mixed swallowtail butterflies that might contain similar specimens, I was almost certain the specimen in the picture was a Papilio blumei, also known as the Green Swallowtail.  Hmmm, the Green Swallowtail? The wing shape and pattern of the markings on the wings were a match, but the picture I had was of a butterfly with blue markings, not green!  All the specimens of this species in the collection looked green.
Tumblr media
Then I thought: I bet this unusual color has something to do with the structural coloring in the scales of the wings.  The reason the butterfly looked blue in the image was because the picture was taken in the dark and the photo was shot at an angle. This caused the butterfly to appear blue because the microscopic scales of the wings are structured in such a way that they interfere with visible light.  When I held my hand over the specimen and cast a shadow on it, the green bands then appeared blue, just like in the picture.  Structural coloring like this is seen in many insects and other animals, and can often be iridescent.
Tumblr media
The next step was to confirm the identification with Dr. Rawlins, our expert on Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies).  This is where it got tricky.  According to the literature, Papilio blumeiconsists of four distinct subspecies that represent geographical variants of that species. When looking at specimens in the collection, there are subtle differences in the width of the blue bands on the wings. The photograph I had matched specimens that were identified in the collection as Papilio blumei.  This species is only known from the island of Sulawesi (Indonesia). Differences found among specimens from different regions of the island appear to correspond with the different subspecies. A careful detailed study would have to be done in order to revise this species complex.
Sorting out all this tricky stuff is the science of taxonomy, which is the branch of science that deals with the classification and naming of organisms.  Species are classified according to the various characteristics they have in common, which helps scientists to understand how organisms are related to one another.  A deeper understanding of these different characters and how they evolved over time and in concert with a species life history, is what constitutes the study of systematics, which is the field of study that deals with evolutionary relationships among organisms.
There are over 1 million described insect species on earth, and many more sitting in collections all over the world, still waiting to be “discovered”.  Some of these specimens hidden away in the collections are known to be new species and are in the process of “getting a name”—a common phrase heard around museum insect collections that refers to the process of describing in detail the defining characteristics of the species, assigning a Latin name to the specimen(s), and formally publishing the name in the scientific literature.  Getting to put a name on a new species is one of the best things about working in a museum. Knowing how many specimens there are to work on, or the possibility of stumbling across a lost or forgotten species someday while working in the collection is truly exciting.  In a collection containing an estimated 30,000 drawers and roughly 14.5 million specimens, you never know what you might find!
Vanessa Verdecia is a collection assistant in the museum’s Invertebrate Zoology Section. Museum employees are encouraged to blog about their unique experiences and knowledge gained from working at the museum.

I got my hands on a gorgeous Papilio blumei today! When I got home I noticed that they're decapitated and their head is on the bottom of the shadowbox, so in questionable taste I've chosen to name it Boleyn.

Mystery specimen!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I belive this is a green swallowtail (Papilio blumei) that has lost the little tails. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!
My boss found this butterfly in the back of our store a week or so ago and gave it to me to repair, remount, and reframe.
When I got it the butterfly was in a frame that was meant for two but sadly the second specimen was 98% missing with just a head left. The glass had smashed inwards, causing a lot of damage. I had to reattach a lower wing and brace the other and rather unfortunately I couldn't locate his abdomen.
Very glad to have this one in my collection though! It's my first butterfly and given how I got into this hobby I can't find anything more fitting than having this one be a rescue job.

Code July Day 4: AU
Tumblr media
Actually I want to remake my Butterfly and Moth Yumi (from Mythic AU/Project Chrysalis) but I want to draw my oni design of her so bad.
Oni Yumi doesn't have a proper AU yet. But I can imagine her being a guardian that saves her trapped friends in Lyoko! 👹🪭
Oni in Japanese folklore can be either evil (monsters that eat humans), or good (being benevolent guardians/protectors). In her oni version, Yumi is spunky and confident, but she is ruthless and unforgiving when she snapped.

Moth Yumi (Mythic AU)'s design and concept under the cut (because I haven't posted it here):
Here's the moth Yumi design, I made this last year. The moth version is the X.A.N.A. counterpart of her butterfly mode.
I might remake this bc the motifs are too crowded. The moth used here is a well-known moth species, which is the Luna moth/American moon moth (Actias luna). Her design combines wa-lolita and EGL (elegant gothic lolita) fashion.
I uploaded this on Instagram at that time.
Tumblr media
It's completely opposite with her butterfly mode, that uses an obscure butterfly species, the peacock swallowtail (Papilio blumei )

Je suis
un papillon.
Bonjour, bonsoir :D

Moth Yumi (2023 ver!) This is the X.A.N.A-fied version of Yumi in my Project Chrysalis/Mythic AU.
Tumblr media
Species based on a female Luna moth (Actias luna)
Tumblr media
Anyway, I'm currently redesigning her butterfly version too, but my red markers are almost ran out of ink, so that one is still a WIP (under the cut)
The butterfly version is based of a Peacock/Green swallowtail (Papilio blumei)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus: The fact that this AMV influenced me to make an AU of Butterfly Yumi lmao. Initially the name was "Butterfly and Samurai" but I remade it, changed some things, and named it "Project Chrysalis", part of Mythic AU.
The changes I apply to the remake version is, both Butterfly and Moth Yumi don't use the hairclip anymore, more proportional eyes (this is a major improvement for me tbh), Butterfly Yumi's bracelet look more like a swallowtail butterfly, the rope thingy on her sash has tassels (in her butterfly mode), and Moth Yumi's X.A.N.A. eyes have black outlines instead of white.

Code July Day 8: AU 🦋
Project Chrysalis (Formerly "Butterfly and Samurai") is a part of an untitled Code Lyoko AU which will be divided into four parts, focusing on each Lyoko Warriors' personality and these upgrades!
This is the oldest AU I ever made (in 2014). The original draft is on my broken old phone so... yeah.
Tumblr media
This butterfly Yumi design is based of an irl butterfly species, which is a peacock swallowtail (Papilio blumei)
Butterfly Yumi doesn't have lots of personality changes. But, she will get flustered when someone touched or pats her antenna hair. She won't like it.
