One of the reasons I don't offer full-color houses by default, is that there are as many house colors as there are paint colors, and I don't stock that many colors of paper! I've been experimenting with some new processes for adding some extra oomph to my house portraits, including paint. This house, since it has white trim and a pretty limited color palette, felt doable. It took me a while to mix up the paints (I used a combination of watercolor and gouche) to get close to the house color, and then painted a wash of color on white paper, that was then cut out to form all of the pieces for the house and the fence. It took way longer than expected to pull the whole thing together, but it's done and delivered to a happy customer! (Thanks for trusting me with your house, @charlescherney!) Back on the #workspacewednesday bandwagon now that my workspace is a little more photogenic! I'm really glad I carved out the time to do this - I spend a lot of time sitting at my desk, and now I'm surrounded by an intentionally curated collection, and I got to feature this wall quilt I made last year. Sewing, usually quilting specifically, is my creative hobby that I do for myself, since most of my other creative "hobbies" at this point are in the service of trying to make a living. I can't share the full view of this piece yet, but I've been reflecting on the process of making it, and wanted to share. I'm really excited about the tiniest detail: There are hooks on that mailbox, just like there are on the real mailbox on the real house this piece is based on. They are SO tiny, and I am really proud of myself for deciding to go for it, even though it was tricky to cut pieces so small, and a little scary to try to glue them on standing up like that. There are a few other parts of this piece that I really struggled with, where I wish I had done something differently or better. I've lived with that little voice that freaks out at less than perfection for a long time now, so I knew that it was just trying to have its way, and I didn't need to start over and rebuild it from scratch. It was tough, though! I'm obsessed with windows. I'm pretty sure it's official. I've always loved that thing that happens when it's dark outside, but light inside, and you can see in through the window, whether it's a shop, a bus, or a house - when I commuted regularly to work, it was the one redeeming part of my commute home in the winter when the days were short. These days my obsession is mostly with architectural details...it's hard for me to be out and about without stopping and snapping photos and thinking about how I might make something out of paper. All that to say, there are two of these one-of-a-kind windows in my shop right now, and it might be your last chance to snag one online until next year! So, I've started experimenting with color on my little paper house portraits. The process is significantly more time-consuming, especially when the building isn't exactly the same color as paper I happen to have on hand, like this one was! How do we feel about color? Building up the layers to create different amounts of shadow in these all-white pieces is such an interesting process! It's a pretty even split between artistic process and structural engineering as I combine the pieces I designed and cut with my computerized cutting machine with hand-cut pieces and modifications, to make something lovely and sturdy. I love houses! I love how different they all are, how the shape of the house can hint at its age, where it is, and tell stories about the families that have lived there in the past. I love how these houses come together in chunks. It makes the final assembly really satisfying, but also really intimidating!
