Hi Grace, you don't have to answer but I have nobody else to ask because nobody else (that I know of) is from nzzzzz
But I'm from the South Island, and I assume you're from the north, if you're not then just ignore, but I am coming up for Christmas and I was wondering if you had any beach recommendations, we're staying in Auckland and we don't mind travelling
i can’t give you the best recommendations bc i am very loyal to my beach BUT
whitianga, papamoa, pukehina, and really anywhere in the coromandel peninsula are sooo beautiful and worth seeing imo (heavy on whitianga)
and personally, i’d avoid places like waihi, mount maunganui, raglan, any auckland beaches, and whangamata because they’re either overcrowded or overrated and don’t have much to offer, unless you like the crowds!!
hope this helps a little xx

Top Challenges
One thing I am finding difficult is specifically photographing "women" surfers which would be used for the Betty Zine. I have a few beaches I can go to that have lots of male surfers but it is more rare there would be lots of female surfers. I am unsure if it's a good idea to continue having Betty as my main client and deliverable, as its easier to photograph men surfing.
Another challenge is that there were not many surfers when I went on my Papamoa trip, so I have lots of ocean and beach photos without many people, although I can try make an important use for these photos in another way.
Figuring out how my main deliverables would be displayed. Eg the photos for the zine - would I show a normal page with the photos all together, or do I mock up a zine and insert my photos like a photo book, with some filler text sections.

East Coast North Island
From Papamoa we travelled east, though you can't go directly east, with our next destination being Napier. We had to go through both Rotorua and Taupo on our way so took the opportunity to visit my favourite sight - mud volcanoes at Waiotapu - not the best day being a little cloudy but the mud was still bubbling nicely. From Taupo we followed the SH5 which took us through yet another different landscape this time with heather and pine trees and more evidence of logging.
We stopped briefly at Waipunga Falls but the route was quite slow going so we continued on as quickly as possible to our destination for a few days Napier. We stayed slightly outside the main town in a suburb Ahuriri which was lovely with a beach view and some fab sunsets again.
Our first expedition from Napier was on a bit of a grey and dull day to Gisborne to see Captain Cooks statue. the weather did improve on route and we did a detour to Mahia peninsula on the way which did have some amazing beaches full of logs. The roadtrip was again slow but this time due to extensive areas of roadworks as this is the area which has been affected several times by storms and hurricanes and in places you could see how the road had sipped away.
By the time we got to Gisbourne it had dried up and we were able to walk along the prim to see both Cooks statue and that of "young Nick" the surgeons boy who was the first to spot land here from the mast of the Endeavour. We also went to the spot where Cook landed in Gisborne and on the way back we saw Young Nick headland.
It was a long day just for a visit to see a statue but it was an enjoyable drive up the coast despite the roadworks.

Inventory element 11: Clam Shell
A clam shell is a seashell typically found on the beach. It's a hard, protective outer layer of a clam, often characterized by a smooth, curved shape. These shells are commonly discovered along coastal shores, including Papamoa Beach.
The clam shell is a cherished treasure, not due to its material value, but for the memories and emotions it evokes. It connects me to Papamoa Beach and family, serving as a sentimental memento of cherished moments and reminding me of the importance of nature in my life.
The clam shell is profoundly significant as a symbol of my familial ties and memories of Papamoa Beach. It's a tangible link to my loved ones and the serene beauty of the seaside. It instils a sense of peace and appreciation for the natural world in me.
The clam shell and Papamoa Beach hold a special place in my creative process. When facing a creative block, a walk on the beach offers a chance to refresh my mind. The shell serves as a tactile reminder of the tranquillity found in nature, often unlocking my best creative thoughts.

Sketch + digitising shapes_to include in the book
I developed my shapes and came up with four final ones I want to include in my book. Once I was done with sketching, I went on illustrator to digitise them to put on the type specimen book.
The shapes each have a meaning behind them relating to the main theme of place + change.
Shape Meanings
Wave shape: Old world/place TGA (my home). The shape was developed from the beach waves of Papamoa beach.
Snowman shape: Getting ready/process. This shows the wave shape changing its form to get to the next chapter in life - moving.
Squiggly shape: Moving from TGA to Auckland and the change of place. The shape was developed from roads to capture the topic of the journey.
Round flower shape: New World/place Auckland (new home). This shape represents a busy city with many curves.
These shapes will be used as decorative pieces to add to my design, and further support the main theme of the type specimen book.
I might edit or change the shapes along the way of making the booklet

Best Images Papamoa day 2
I have selected these as they show a wide range of approaches. I took the images during the sunrise again because I really enjoy trying new ways to use the sunlight with the waves and even water drops. A new technique I have been using lately is using the manual focus, and choosing specific areas I want in focus, and even some totally unfocused. I enjoyed shooting some images with subjects in them as well such as the women at the bottom where I have tried using leading lines or the rule of thirds. My personal favourite photograph is the portrait one of the layers of waves in the sun because it looks like it could extend even further into the distance, which people can imagine themselves. What I like about these photos is that some of the textural ones could be used as backgrounds in the magazines behind a section of text, especially where the image is blurred, such as the seaweed image. Another challenge was that was were no surfers again that day, so I will plan another shoot soon with the sunrise/sunset at a beach guaranteed to have surfers such as Muriwai or Maori Bay and focus more specifically on surf photography.

Papamoa and East Cape
6 days planned in Papamoa and the last 2 we are meeting up with UK friends also travelling in NZ. The travelled down from Coromandel quite quickly as thre was little to see on route and arrived at Papamoa at lunchtime. our accommodation wasn't quite as planned so we have swapped accommodation to have 3 nights in one lodge and 3 in another - no hassle for us who have been moving frequently. Luckily although we are adjoing the new huts being constructed the workers are not there over the weekend so we had 3 quiet days and now have moved to the beach front.
We spent our first evening on the beach with a glorious sunset just like I remember them looking towards the Mount. our first advanture out was to Te Puke. Sadly the kiwi experience Kiwi 360 has closed and moved and only now opens for cruise visitors! Te Puke is the kiwi fruit captial of NZ but no matter where we looked there were no farm gate sales anywhere anymore which is such a shame. We travelled down as far as Lqke Rotorua before heading back to Whakatane for a late lunch and on the way back did manage to find a farm shop selling berries, avocado and feijoas but still no kiwi fruit in kiwi fruit country!
Our second day adventure was out to Cape Runaway. this was a long coastla drive east from Whakatane towards the far eastern end of NZ and we made it as far as Cape Runaway. This part of North Isalnd is very heavily Maori with this meeting halls and schools evident with amazing carved gateways. we also found the little church on the promentary at Raukokore which I think is in a stunning location out on the rocks - its very photogenic!
We have then spent two days just relaxing and enjyouing the weather at Papamoa. We have sat by the pool, drunk coffee in the local bar and read on our patio overlooking the sea. I have even been in swimming twice and although cold, its not as cold as UK. Today I was up just as the sun rose which was very pretty and It was actually really nice to go for a swim before breakfast today with Sally and Dan.
Here are some pictures mainly of our trip to East Cape and of the beach at Papamoa. Today we are planning to climb up Mount Maunganui.

Pāpāmoa local criticises Tauranga council for lack of action on dog-prohibited areas on beach
Dogs in prohibited areas of Papamoa Beach. A Pāpāmoa father whose daughter is “petrified” of dogs is upset with the Tauranga City Council over what he says is a lack of action to enforce the dog-free zone at the beach. Dogs are prohibited in the area surrounding the Pāpāmoa and Omanu Surf Clubs, Mount Maunganui […]
