What is something about Mara that people wouldn't expect looking at her?

I like to think that the Panthera we see, she exudes Power & Strength when you look at her. Though she has the second class of Solo (canonically, ofc) and is very capable of being sent in alone to get the job done, she still very much leans on her friends, family, and teammates.

She would be nothing without them, literally nothing. One of her biggest fears is being left behind, since she was 8 years old, she's chased and desperately clung to the Adams Twins, too afraid of being alone. Girl got Abandonment issues. ...wonder where she got that from?

Night Raid and all its members have helped Mara see her true potential and has shown her theres no way she can do this all alone. Gordie, Dez, Mara, J I H Z Z Y, even if he doesn't have the killswitch virus, need each other to get through this. They've faced beak odds before all the while knowing that any second will be the last, with the increased threat of whatever dangerous Gig the crew is taking on.

However, theres no one in the world that Mara leans more on than her husband Rockerboy and NR crewmate J I H Z Z Y. On the battlefield, he may seem clumsy, uncoordinated, and honestly a risk to everyone with him being around during high pressure situations... However, behind closed doors. No one holds this powerhouse together better than him.

From the moment the two met, it was almost something electric charged when their eyes met, and their time working together, J I H Z Z Y got the chance to see the real beauty in her heart, how alive she is when she's doing what she loves. He seen this incredible warrior of a woman, who forged herself through her hard work and devotion. Without his arms to retreat to when the fear grows too much of when her expiration date is to come, without his words echoing strongly in her mind.

The Olympic Cougar Project (a collaborative effort between feline conservation group Panthera and almost everyone tribe on the peninsula) have confirmed the death of two wild cougars. One by Port Angeles and one by Blynn. These towns are 1-2 hours away from the Cat Sanctuary.

Please please please PLEASE keep your cats indoors right now. H5N1 (HPAI, highly pathogenic avian influenza) is zoonotic to cats, and it is just as deadly for them. Additionally, if you have a way to keep your shoes away from your cat(s), or sanitize them after being out in the world (bleach footbath for example), a little biosecurity wouldn't hurt.

A sanctuary in Washington just lost 20 of their rescue big cats to this virus. It is not getting less dangerous for your cats this year than it was last.

It has ALWAYS been dangerous to let house cats free roam without supervision, but it's becoming dangerous right now to be taking them on leashes if they will have access to ground birds have recently been on, or water they have accessed. Catios might be okay, if they're covered and well-screened, but I would take a moment to subscribe to your local state ag department's email or phone alerts for HPAI in your area, and react accordingly even for covered outdoor areas.

COVID-19 testing and...Jaguars?

Jaguars, Panthera onca, are widely known as one of the most skilled and powerful hunters on the planet. They are the third largest member of the big cat family, yet they have the strongest bite force relative to their size, beating out both the lion and the tiger for the most forceful pair of jaws. They are massive, weighing up to a mighty 250 pounds, and growing six feet long. It’s no secret that they’re one of the world’s most impressive predators. So, how do you convince one to participate in a COVID test?

First, let’s confront why you’d try to nasally swab an apex predator like a jaguar. Did you know that along with many other animals,  felines can contract the COVID-19 virus? In fact, as many as seven big cats at the Bronx Zoo were diagnosed with the respiratory illness in April of 2020. So, when the Chattanooga Zoo learned that some of our larger feline friends were susceptible to the illness, we knew we had to take preventative action.

While it may seem like an impossible task to ask a jaguar to take a COVID test, learning new behaviors is nothing new for our two adult male jaguars, Phil and Jean. These boys, while being amazing predators, are also highly intelligent and capable of learning new behaviors, even nasal swabs. Their primary keeper, Alex Sinn, says that the brothers are typically very willing to learn and train. In fact, training is a part of their daily routine. About five days a week, Phil and Jean are asked to target-train. During this training exercise, Alex asks Phil and Jean to present their paws against their den walls as he holds up a stick with a red target on the end against the other side of the mesh. It’s through this training that Alex is able to routinely check the health of their paw pads. After successfully running through the training, the boys are rewarded with a tasty jaguar treat--a juicy ball of ground meat.

Similar exercises include injection training, where the jaguars move into a chute-like area and allow Alex to practice the motion of hand-injection on the cats, effectively desensitizing Phil and Jean to the experience. This practice makes for smooth injection experiences, and a far less stressful day for both the cats and Alex when it comes time to do a physical exam on the jaguars.

It’s important to note that training with any of our animals is never done by force. Keepers simply present the animals with the option to participate, and deliver rewards to reinforce positive behavior. As a result, when the den door opens and it’s time to call the Jaguars off the exhibit for the night, they come willingly, knowing that a giant rat or other incentive is waiting for them on the other side.

Since training is a part of the Jaguars’ routine, Alex was able to introduce the COVID testing as a new part of their procedure. First, Alex attached the black cylinder to the inside of their den, and asked each jaguar to rest their muzzle in the holder as he rewarded them. As they got familiar with this, Alex introduced the cotton swab, rubbing it on the outside of the cats’ nose while treating them with fresh meat. Day by day, the cats became more and more comfortable with the practice until Alex was able to gently place the swab inside their nose to get a sample.

For now, the practice is preventative. Like injection training, it’s helpful that the animals are used to these exercises so that when Zoo staff needs to be able to sedate the jaguars, they can do it smoothly and without causing unnecessary stress to the animals. If Alex or another member of animal care staff witnesses either Jean or Phil displaying respiratory issues or other symptoms of COVID-19, they are able to safely and calmly test them. And the jaguars? They just think they’re going through their regular routine, receiving tasty rewards along the way.

So, next time you visit the Chattanooga Zoo, swing by the jaguar exhibit. You might find Jean up interacting with an enrichment item, or Phil resting peacefully on his platform. While this may be what you see out on the exhibit, you’ll now know the rest of the incredible story. Behind the scenes, these mighty brothers are intelligent, highly intuitive animals who participate in intricate training exercises that contribute to their own health and welfare. Fans may expect a new plot and a few additional adjustments this time. As you can expect, the first Drag Race episode was packed with excitement and drama. Viewers noticed a new look and a few other modifications in the first episode. Recently, the season experienced some changes. The mini-challenge for this week was a spinning-wheel test. Aura came out on top. The main issue had potential but completely failed to materialize. We saw that the show invited the Season 1 queens for an improv challenge. Each actor from this season was partnered with a contestant from the previous season for this challenge. A few props were provided, but they were required to develop their personas and strive to produce something fascinating. None of it seemed to work, and underutilized the Season 1 actors were giving the impression of a missed opportunity. The "The Runway" category zodiac signs are the focus of this week. Gioffré gave us Aquarius. Gioffré had another gorgeous pose. She doesn't alter her face as much as other drag queens do, and her clothing is very detailed, giving the impression that she leans more toward cosplay. It's fascinating. Our Pisces came from Aura Eternal. It was a fairly understated nod to the zodiac but lacked some impact. Skandalove, who The Shining inspired, brought us Gemini. Solid. Along with Gemini, Nehellenia gave us Alien as a tribute to her masculine half that was striving to show through her feminine façade. La Petite Noire was indeed a Taurus, but she opposed the bullfighting custom. The outfit itself was quite imaginative. Panthera Virus was a gigantic scorpion representing Scorpio, but she was still dark, sexy, and cool and worked well on the runway. Another home run by La Diamond: she was a Taurus who served Cornwall as a medieval warrior. The winner was announced as Diamond, which once again felt appropriate. Panthera and Gioffré were located at the bottom. Aura had a fortunate escape. The song used for the lipsync was "Jem" by Cristina D'Avena. It's a sweet song with a positive vibe. Gioffré caused mayhem. Panthera seemed to perform with more control, but I suppose she had exhausted her options. Panthera has been dropped, and Gioffré keeps going. Nehellenia appears to be the season's storyteller; she provides interesting discussion points and is fascinating no matter what she does. Skandalove is making his long-awaited comeback to drag. She appears to be a contender because she is excellent at drag. Panthera doesn't appear to take herself too seriously and has a great sense of style. She is a strong performer on stage, but the acting difficulties were her downfall. In Episode 4, Gioffré defeated him in the lipsync. Obama had experienced a roller-coaster of emotions thus far, and she appeared to be becoming agitated with the judges' criticisms. Panthera triumphed in the lipsync contest before being eliminated in Week 3. Tanissa struggled to get comfortable in this competition; she lost to Obama in the lipsync battle and was ousted in Episode 2. The season's top pork chop is Narciso.
