I finished dragon quest v (on dragon quest day no less😁)
Spoilers ahead! (And if you plan on playing this game i wouldn't read any further lol)
Usually im quite the contrarion but honestly i can agree with anyone who says that 5 is the best game in the series, its the most emotional, has the highest stakes, definitely the most fun, etc.
While the game took me almost 63 hours to finish it sure as hell didnt feel like 63 hours (except for my massive casino grinds they felt and were long but thats my own fault)
The story of this game is so gripping, I barely knew anything going in except for pankraz dying and and i only knew that he died but no context... and him laying there and being killed just to save his son was hard to watch. Spending the rest of the game being reminded of pankraz every now and again was touching and everyone telling you that you need to save your mother only to have her be killed in front of you after you meet her once and barely get to speak to her was so chilling... Ladja and nimzo are 2 of the if not the most gruesome and heartless villians in dragon quest.
One moment i really want to mention is my entry to gotha, i knew that thats where i was headed but the in-game time was that sorta early morning moment where everything sorta has this dim blue light to it and it was really touching to me... the dawn of a new day and the rise of a new king of gotha
It sorta shocked me in the end that the player wasnt the legendary hero... but it was his son. You find that out when you cant wield the zenithian sword but it left me asking if the player was the hero but was too young to wear/use the zenithian gear and all i wanted was to use the zenithian gear like in 4 and 6... but no, your son is the hero. Which was cool to say the least! It was different to not be the hero and cool i think
Keeping nimzo a secret until the end and then his transformation and hard boss fight was awesome and i think it was one of my favourite final boss fights
And this is all thanks to my loving wife @sarahmacbitch who bought me a copy of dqv for my birthday. If you are reading this i love you hunny♥️
...still never recruited that damn metal slime though...

Because I only recognized fire emblem, Pokémon, and JJBA at first.
“Aus doesn’t count”

“Replace x with Bamse”
Sorry but. Findus and Skalman have already won. 3 times are a bit too much for us sweds.

You see Brooklyn 911 (picked by wheel) and you go against fireback mountain. Shame on you anon.

Yeah but Neon J vs Wubbox = chaos

Dragon Quest V - Debora Appreciation Post
With Grandmaster Nimzo defeated, it's time for the Zenith Dragon to take the Hero's family on a victory tour! I found myself taking a lot of screenshots of Debora's party chat lines, hence the title of this post. I did miss her while she was a statue, but I didn't have much opportunity to use her in the party after reviving her.
Tumblr media
Hahaha, I previously wrote that I hoped the Zenith Dragon would go back to Dr Agon.
The Hero's family had some touching things to say about Pankraz and Mada:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought Debora's reaction to finding out she was adopted by the Briscoletti family was really interesting. She said she always knew because of how lenient her parents were with her, and she deliberately acted out more as a result.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Debora actually seems to dote on both of her children, to the point that I wonder if some of these lines are the same as the other brides. She boasts of her son and has some sweet interactions with her daughter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, I was so happy to see my monsters at the banquet! They certainly helped more than Debora, who wasn't there during the battles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The party chat really does add a lot to these games. In fact, I plan to play the main games on Android (or later) from now on so I can experience it. Sometimes I even wished there were fewer reactions so I could read them again!

It just hit me.
So Dragon Quest V is split up into three arcs: the hero’s childhood (literally beginning with his birth), his adolescence, and his adulthood. These arcs are often referred to by fans as Generations 1, 2, and 3. At first, naming the third arc Generation 3 made no sense to me, since while the hero has children, those children do not go on to have children themselves. But then I realized — Generations 1 and 2 do not refer to the hero and his children respectively, but rather, Pankraz (the hero’s father) and the hero respectively, leaving Generation 3 to be the hero’s children.

There aren’t enough DQ5 headcanons so I’m going to make some:
The hero, who shall henceforth be called Abel, is dyslexic
Here, let me explain. Abel wasn’t able to read at age 6, while most children are able, if poorly, by age 4. If you go up to a sign during the prologue, you will get a text box saying: “It looks like it might be some kind of warning sign, but Abel hasn’t learned how to read yet.”
Pankraz truly cared about his child, so neglect isn’t the reason Abel learned so late. And if Pankraz couldn’t do it, why didn’t Sancho? My guess is that they were trying to teach him, but Abel just didn’t understand what was on the page.
Harry did eventually teach him at the slave camp, though, as somewhat of a “sorry I’m the reason your father is dead and we’re both condemned to servitude”.
What do you think?

Dragon Quest: Your Story
This is one of those movies that intrigues me. I feel like I want to dissect it, find out what worked and what didn’t, and learn from it. So that’s what I’m gonna do.
Spoilers, natch.
Also this post is long.
So I didn’t dislike the movie. It just left me feeling strange. And it’s not just because of the ending, though that is a part of it.
I actually liked a good amount of things in the movie. Dragon Quest games are long, so naturally some events are going to be cut and smashed together. My favorite parts of the movie were the parts where the movie got creative in combining events. Bianca and Luca taking down Bjorn together, the Zenithian lore changes, the brief discussion between the hero and himself at the beginning, and Dr. Agon’s larger role are chief among these. I’m not gonna go on a tirade about how Madchen was cut, how there’s no Zenithian armor, or how Luca never makes it to Gotha, because I understand that certain things had to be cut to fit the film format.
This, however, still puts the movie at a huge disadvantage. It’s hard to put the events of a book or a video game to film already, but this is a monumental task for DQV in particular. In my opinion, the biggest reason why the game works as it does is because it is allowed to take its time. The game is about the life of our hero, and because of the large scale, the important events and repeating themes are allowed to sink into the back of your head and lay in wait until they pop up again in the most satisfying ways. Even though I knew that the mysterious stranger who asked to see my golden orb was probably gonna be Me from the Future, the payoff of that scene was so fantastic because so many things happened since then that the event was lost in the flow, and when I meet my younger self from the other side, so many things have happened, it is no longer fresh in memory. You really feel like you have lived a life when you come around the other side. And many of these feelings, such as Pankraz’s death, rely on interactivity and player pacing to really pay off. That is something a single movie simply cannot emulate.
As a result, many things, such as most of the game up to the Briscoletti residence feels rushed, and such buildup is not allowed to happen. As such, many things fall flat. Dragon Quest V is one of my favorite games ever, and because of that there are plenty of things that I already emotionally react to on principal. I can’t in good faith recommend it to anyone but fans because I know only people like me are going to get goosebumps when they see Pankraz’s journal before the music even begins.
And then there’s the ending.
I like what the movie was... trying to say. I can see where the idea came from. I love seeing people relate to DQV at different stages of their lives. It’s also one of the reasons the game stayed with me. It has resonance with the people who play it because of how it echoes life and growth.
The problem is, full-on admitting and showing that the world was a virtual reality game all along cheapens the entire experience. It makes me feel cheated for giving the movie the benefit of the doubt earlier. And having Virusman come in out of nowhere to crash the party is just too much. It’s like a slap to the face. After everything, I felt like I wanted to turn the movie off before the ending, since it had just gotten rid of all the stakes.
How would I have done it?
How about, at the end of the movie, and I mean the very end, Luca prime comes out of the VR pod, talks about how they wanted to choose Nera this time but still chose Bianca, they talk to the pod handler about how “Whoah! VR technology is wild! It’s like I lived a whole life in just a few hours!” But isn’t it sad to keep reliving the same nostalgia since 1992? Well, this place will always have a special place in my heart.” And then it’s revealed that Luca has a wife. They give each other a loving look, then walk off into the mall. Roll credits. I mean, the nostalgia is legit. It’s why I’m here. It’s probably why you’re here too. Having that be part of the movie is not a bad idea at all.
I caught the references to the game interface. Before the ending, I just thought they were clever little gags that acknowledged the game and the fact that the movie couldn’t possibly fit everything in. The decision to give Luca the revelation that he loved Bianca in the form a potion was a bit... disturbing (why couldn’t Witch!Nera just tell him that he felt different deep inside, followed by the choice screens as a dream sequence? Having it be a potion makes it uncomfortable), though the twist that it was Nera all along was fun. I didn’t think too hard on them, and they could have really resonated with the fact that it was VR all along just on principle, without the heavyhanded virusman final fight.
And I wasn’t angry during the final fight. I was laughing my ass off.
Between the pacing and the ending, I can’t give the movie a hard recommendation. If it were just one of those things, I would be much more comfortable telling people to see it. As is, I’d say, fans only.
Do you agree? Disagree? Have any other ideas for how things could have worked differently? Do tell! And thank you for staying until the end of this long rambly post!

I've been thinking abt the DQV movie and wondering how close it's actually gonna be to the game. It looks REALLY faithfully recreated, but some things I'm wondering about are...
-Korol. Is Korol gonna be in this? I have the feeling that Ladja is just gonna be the leader of the Order of Zugzwang and that Korol and Ferz will be completely absent. It would be funny if Korol and Ferz WERE in this and they were just underlings of Ladja. That would actually be kind of amazing djfjfjdjj
-Kon and Slon. I'm ninety percent certain they'll be in this, but I think they'll just be mid-boss type villains. I don't think they'll have anything to do with Pankraz's death. More than likely, they'll fight the hero together at some point and the tower bit with Kon will be gone. If the hero does get turned to stone, I could see Ladja doing it himself with no aid from Kon.
-Nimzo. Considering we see Nadiria in the trailer, Nimzo is in. There would be no other reason to go to Nadiria (Except to rescue Mada, of course, but if Nimzo was a non-entity....why would Ladja kidnap Mada in the first place??? And hide her in Nadiria???) My question is.....will Nimzo have a more prominent role??? Perhaps as a shadowy figure throughout Nadiria or something. That would be nice.

Video Game Review: Dragon Quest V
Gather ‘round, children, and Grampa Ace’ll tell you a story about the time a demo made him realize that a whole video game genre was pretty crap.
You see, back when Grampa Ace was a dumbass teenager, he thought J-RPGs were The Shit. In particular, he was a huge Final Fantasy fan (though he’d played and enjoyed many in the genre that weren’t even that passable). However, it all changed when Final Fantasy XII came out.
Tumblr media
that’s the one that has this kid in it
I never played Final Fantasy XII, because Final Fantasy XII came bundled with a demo for Dragon Quest VIII.
Tumblr media
that’s the one that has this guy in it
The demo let you play through the first part of the game, up to the fight with the boss in the Waterfall Cave (IIRC, it ended when you left town after giving Kalderasha his Brystal Call back). The demo did it’s job and got me to buy the game when it came out. Up to that point, I’d considered Final Fantasy the golden standard for J-RPGs, but Dragon Quest VIII was so much better than it in every conceivable way that I ended up giving me my very first “that thing I used to like is shit” epiphany. There are still a handful of Final Fantasy games I’ll play and enjoy, but overall the series is crap and Dragon Quest helped me to realize that by being not crap.
Fast forward a few years, and I was at Game Crazy (because those still existed back them) looking for a new game, and I spotted the DS remake of DQV on the shelf. By that time, I had become a huge fan of the Harvest Moon series, so the ability to get married in the game (combined with remembering that I loved the shit out of DQ8- even though I still haven’t finished it. I have a bad habit of restarting games partway through, so I don’t finish very many of them, which means video game reviews are not going to be a very common thing on this blog) was a huge selling point.
Tumblr media
i’m one of those boring people who usually goes for bianca, in case you’re curious
Dragon Quest V is probably the closest thing to a perfect game I have ever played. Granted, I don’t play many games that aren’t one of these ones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but I think it’s good enough to be considered nearly-perfect by someone who actually plays different video games. You should ask somebody like that.
My two biggest problems with J-RPGs that aren’t Dragon Quest are the excess of teenage angst, and the long cut-scenes involving my character doing a whole bunch of super-fun looking things that’d I’d love to be having some input in. DQV has none of either of these. It does have cut-scenes, but they generally occur when the main character is either an infant, incapacitated, or wouldn’t be wandering around talking to people anyway.
The gameplay is solid, the graphics are good (for the DS), the characters are memorable and likable, the battles are fun, and the story actually departs a bit from the typical DQ formula by having the hero be some dude rather than a Chosen One. Technically his son is the Legendary Hero(TM), but you’re not required to take him to the final boss so big whoop.
Like most other Dragon Quest games, you’re given a goal at the beginning, and while there’s a tiny bit of guidance to help you through the beginning, by the midpoint they just toss you out in the world and let you explore (or Google) to find out what you’re supposed to do next. That’s great. More video games need to trust the player to want to play the game, instead of holding their hand through to an ending.
Even beyond that, though, the game trusts it’s audience to know when a sad thing is happening without having to tell them that it’s sad. For example, it sucks when Pankraz gets blowed up not because the game tells you “LISTEN TO THIS SAD MUSIC AS OUR HERO GIVES A MONOLOGUE ABOUT HOW SAD HE IS ABOUT THIS SAD THING THAT HAPPENED. ARE YOU SAD YET?! FEEL SAD!” It sucks because you spent the last several hours hanging out with him and seeing him be your super-awesome badass dad. It’s not super surprising because he tripped over every death flag he could’ve on the way, but the game came out in 1992, so those flags may’ve been less obvious at the time.
If I had to point out some of the game’s flaws, the twins act more like perfect movie kids than actual kids, and Sancho’s accent in the DS remake is really bad and shows a lack of understanding about why Spanish speakers add the letter “e” to the beginning of some words that start with the letter “s”. The kid thing isn’t that bad, and Sancho is never a required party member, so I wouldn’t consider either of those a deal-breaker.
So, yeah. Dragon Quest V is awesome. I’d murder my entire family for an HD remake that doesn’t have the characters do the walking-in-place thing.
Tumblr media
this walking-in-place thing
If you haven't played it yet, do so. It’s available for DS, or as a mobile remake for iPhone or Android. While you’re at it, you can also check out the rest of the series, but bear in mind that some Dragon Quest games are more newcomer-friendly than others. V and VIII are generally considered the best to start with, though I’d also recommend IX. It’s one of the weaker installments, but a weak Dragon Quest game is still a very good game. Do not start with VII. It’s great, but not if you’ve never played a Dragon Quest game before.
Can’t think of a good way to end this, so here’s another gif.

Dragon Quest V - Victory!
On September 24, 2023, I beat DQV. I started this save on the Android version in 2019. I managed to beat Nimzo on my first attempt! My strategy:
I prioritized abilities that can be used without spending MP and items with infinite uses. That meant I mostly used monsters on my team, although I did have at least one twin all the time, so I still got lots of party chat. For most battles including bosses, I only used four party members, although I did utilize all 8 during the final battle. My mainstays:
Ryuka the Hero (LV:37) with Pankraz's sword, Pallium Regale, Ogre shield, Meteorite bracer, and Elfin charm. Mostly physical attacks and reviving with Zing and Kerplunk. I did cast Kaswoosh a few times. Due to my carelessness I had to Kerplunk him early on in the second phase, and he remained dead for most of the fight lol.
"Harry " the Hero's Son (LV:34) with Zenithian Sword, Zenithian Armour, Zenithian Shield, and Iron helmet. Physical attacks and some Kazap, while rationing MP for a few key heals and Kazing. The Zenithian Sword itself is critical for removing magic like Bounce from enemies, although I used that more against Bjorn than Nimzo.
Harriet the Hero's Daughter (LV:31) with Faerie foil, Princess's robe, Scale shield, Happy hat, Circle of Life, Circle of Water, and Dragon staff. Yes, I only used her to cast Puff! with the Dragon staff. I kept her in the wagon until very late in the game, so she was a bit under-leveled for a while. In my defense, Puff! worked great and she's immune to fire breath attacks while transformed into a dragon, which is useful since almost all the bosses seem to use them. I think she got in a few Kacrackles as well.
Goodian the Slime knight (LV:37) with Steel broadsword, Spiked armour, Dark shield, Hardwood headwear, Magma staff, and Sage's stone. I would have him cast Boom on normal enemies, but for big bosses he was the healer. He was pretty fast and couldn't be killed in one hit. Obviously the Sage's stone was a goddess-send; with him healing everyone a little bit every turn, I used relatively few healing spells. I think he also had an Elfin elixir which I used on the Hero's Son and the Yggdrasil dew. The Magma staff doesn't do very much damage, but better than his physical attack while saving MP.
The rest of the party sat totally neglected in the wagon, biding their time and gaining experience points. I was afraid they'd be useless in the final battle, but they proved me wrong. The cavalry:
Mason the Golem (LV:20) with Double-edged sword, Zombie mail, Iron shield, and Hades' helm. You get the Double-edged sword not long before the final battle, and I equipped it to my Golem as an afterthought. It worked AMAZINGLY WELL. Between the Golem's high defense and health, Meditation skill, and Focus Strength skill, the damage dealt far outweighed the recoil. And skills don't cost MP! A surprise heavy-hitter, I think he probably did the most damage out of everyone besides maybe the Hero's Son.
Kim the Chimaera (LV:25) with Cobra claw, Dark robe, and Hermes' hat. Mostly I took her out only to Multiheal, but her Freezing Blizzard skill also came in handy (for the low cost of 0 MP).
Mohicat the Great Sabrecat (LV:32) with Orichalcum fangs, Leather kilt, Iron helmet, and Bianca's ribbon. I hadn't focused on his build at all, so I was a bit worried about his defense, but thanks to his speed and luck he stayed alive for a decently long time. Just Focus Strength and attack.
Drongo the Drag-goof (LV:16) with Iron cuirass and Top hat. He was one of my main party members until I replaced him with a better dragon... the Hero's Daughter. Flame Breath nonstop.
Tumblr media
I did find it funny that the Hero's family were widely celebrated for defeating Nimzo and not the good, honest, hard-working monsters. After all that fighting, it's time for the victory celebration!
