How did the first rebellion fail?
The final days of the First Rebellion… two leaders, two sides, and two weeks that changed the course of Panem forever.
Syrus Reed, the fearless Guardian of District 11, has sacrificed everything to keep the Revolution alive. But with betrayal seeping through her ranks and trust crumbling, how long can she keep fighting before her leadership, and her mind, fracture?
Meanwhile, Crassus Snow, a Capitol general cut off from his wealth and power, crawls through enemy territory with paranoia as his constant companion. His mission: to claw his way back to the Capitol and end this insufferable war once and for all.
Two paths, bound by the invisible thread of war, betrayal, and desperation. Their fates will collide in ways neither could imagine.
What price must be paid for liberation? And whose liberation are we really fighting for?
I am currently writing a brand new Hunger Games fanfic called They Will Come For You In the Night and I am so proud of what I've written so far. This fic is essentially 98% OCs so obviously I haven't had very much engagement (with the exception of one reader, Wadelock, who is potentially the best reader to ever exist... Don't believe me? Check out the iconic comments they leave on each chapter.) so I'm hoping that putting myself and my fic out there will get a few more eyes on it. I really love it and have put a ton of thought and consideration into it so it would mean the world to have a bit more visibility.
I've written nearly 13 of 17 chapters so far, and I've posted 10 so no need to worry that I'll abandon the fic half way through because we're already in the home stretch. I've also been having fun on canva so I think I'm going to post chapter covers periodically that fit the mood along with chapter summaries until I eventually catch up with my posting schedule.
I hope to see some of you there! 💚

btw we know that in thg games the victory tour goes from 12 to 1 and finaly the Capitol and I love how stupid the roadtrip is like What is this, I know that it makes some kind of sense going in district order but the route looks so funny

i don’t want a 50th Hunger Games prequel book i want the 51st Hunger Games. I want Haymitch’s first attempt at mentoring while grieving over his family and friends, feeling betrayed by the Capitol. Knowing that 12’s tributes haven’t got a single chance and he’s going to be witnessing them die every single year. Haymitch realising he’s still stuck on the Capitol train.
#asking for a prequel 50th HG would just feel like a rehashing the 51st gives us mentoring and tragedy and some 50th flashbacks#plus we could see chaff and mags and the other victors and stuff#and more panem worldbuilding anf the evolution of it and thr games#the hunger games#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#haymitch abernathy

#ShowsWeLove: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Suzanne Collins’s The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes us back to Panem before the days of Katniss Everdeen, offering a deep dive into the origins of the Hunger Games and the early life of President Snow. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film adaptation paints a vivid picture of a post-war Capitol and the lengths to which its citizens will go to maintain control. It’s an ambitious prequel…

a thing that i particularly love about the hunger games prequels is how it shows that people have been fighting against the games since their inception
when i was younger and read the original trilogy for the first time i was so bothered how it was 74 years of games, i remember thinking how could it have gone on so long without anyone doing anything
these prequels highlight that people have been fighting from the get-go: lucy gray's defiance, reaper ripping down panem's flags to cover the fallen tributes, haymitch's games and how many others shared his ideologies - the capitol just drowns them out, they rewrite their stories so their efforts are forgotten
liberation takes time and it's built upon the actions of those in the past

like i remember the vitriol that came out when the mere PREMISE for ballad of songbirds and snakes came out bc it was “about the villain” and wasn’t instead a novella of one of the many cute likeable faves of the masses. i remember how fast people were to tear down the book before it even came out (and still do now). and it’s like look, i get it, suzanne created so many interesting characters that it would be incredible to learn more about and get more content for. but her choosing to write about snow for a prequel isn’t like Romanticizing The Villain or whatever bullshit y’all are claiming as hot takes on twitter -- ballad fits right into the common themes and tone of the series in that its not a romanticization but a reflection on how snow became what we know him as in the original series. both in how he already had some less than charming or healthy traits (just like katniss does -- suzanne is always clear that people are not inherently good nor evil and parallels were drawn between how snow and katniss view the world and think strategically, etc, from the second book), but also in how society and the choices of the greater community in panem created snow. like ballad is a really interesting piece of lore and history and worldbuilding for an already rich and elaborate setting that suzanne created, allowing us to see how that world even came to be and the kind of toxic impact it had on the people surviving in it while still pointing out that those people are human and that everyone has humanity and yet can still cause unfathomable harm to one another based on circumstance and need to survive and pressures of all kinds and like i have lost the plot here now but suzanne is one of the best authors of our time who actually gives a shit about creating layered, nuanced characters and worlds rather than black and white good and evil and unfortunately the hyperpolarization of our hot takes social media culture nowadays just can’t handle her anymore. suzanne im so sorry we don’t deserve your storytelling. anyway i’ll be seated for this movie y’all can skip and keep giving lukewarm takes on twitter to make urself seem so smart for hating a book you probably didnt even actually read
#suzanne collins is one of the only mainstream authors these days who clearly writes for purpose rather than profit#and puts thought into her writing always 100% of the time. but we as a regressing online society are not ready for her anymore#people are so scared of nuance in their media its incredible (derogatory)#the hunger games#ballad of songbirds and snakes#maggie.txt#fandom crit#to the people who are actually looking forward to this film + enjoyed the book i respect YOU

just finished the ballad of songbirds and snakes and like. god what a talent. I feel like it's incredibly hard to write a prequel in the pov of the evil villain as a fresh faced high school student without either going down the 'some people are just pure evil, boo, hiss' path or the 'poor coriolanus snow, he tried to be good but he never had a chance' path. and by god if suzanne didn't pull off the secret third 'sometimes people make hard choices, and the choices they make determine who they are and what they become' path like a fuckin' boss
but also in light of the events of this book I cannot believe that fifty years later president snow had to deal with a district twelve tribute named katniss who everyone started calling the mockingjay and whose performance of 'the hanging tree' went viral across panem. in the hunger games universe there is definitely a god who definitely enjoys fucking with coriolanus snow specifically

Allow me to introduce you to Augustus Neal, or Auggie as his friends call him.
Auggie is charm personified built on a foundation of capability. As District 13's Guardian he is responsible for keeping the Rebellion's fire power in line. As Syrus' right-hand man and de facto spy, he's the one digging up everyone's dirt.
Yes, he'll wink and flirt but don't underestimate him, he is getting shit done and spinning many plates and looking great while doing it.
When I pictured Auggie, all I could think was All American football player. In another life he'd be on the cover of magazines wearing Ralph Lauren or Abercrombie & Fitch. At first I was thinking Chris Evans during his Not Another Teen Movie days but then I remembered watching The Holdovers and thinking that Michael Provost gave a really interesting performance as the jock with a heart of gold and thought he'd be a perfect Auggie.
Auggie is introduced in Chapter 1 of my fic They Will Come For You In the Night so if you want to know more about him, check it out.

I don’t think Katniss was the chosen one
She was a distant covey relation and her daddy isn’t even considered covey just adjacent to them
Plus she resisted all the you’re the hero propaganda they tried feeding her because she didn’t care about being a hero too much
If lenore dove was reaped then she would have been a chosen one. Her and lucy gray were of that chosen one personality. Katniss was the opposite. If anything Peeta had more of a special chosen boy personality
And Haymitch even says in the end Katniss was purely luckier than him not destined for anything
From Wikipedia on The Chosen One trope:
The Chosen One, also known as The One or The Chosen, is a narrative trope where one character, usually the protagonist, is framed as the inevitable hero of the story as a result of destiny, unique gifts, and/or special lineage.
In the original trilogy, Katniss is a chosen one of a sort, only the force that has chosen her were the random odds that selected her sister and luck that the other was Peeta. Combined with her survival skills and heart, the rebellion plucks her out of the arena and frames her as their "chosen one" while the reader is aware of how she is just a teenage girl that is being thrust into this role as the symbol of the rebellion but is actually in charge of very little. She doesn't control the armies or edit the propos. That's not to say she has no power, but it is likely that someone else would have found their way to her place had Prim not been reaped because the other players were ready. It was chance and odds just as much as who Katniss was, as her own individual self, that made her the Mockingjay.
The two prequel books slash this reading of her and makes her a Chosen One in the traditional sense. In that, it was her destiny and hers alone for her to defeat the Capitol.
Lucy Gray was rigged to enter the arena, which was its own sort of bad luck and at the smaller district level. This was humans interfering. But after those woods, she was left to haunt Snow the rest of his life. The girl who remained a mystery and his fixation. The two of them had their own private Hunger Games with Snow seeming to be the victor, until the right person came along to be the face and voice of the rebellion. And whose face and voice was used? Lucy Gray's only living kin as an echo of her vengeance against Snow. And given the way that Lenore Dove was also fighting to free Panem, making Haymitch promise to not let the sun rise on the reaping, and haunting him after, we can throw Lenore Dove as part of this destiny leading Katniss to be the one to bring down Snow.
From what we know, Katniss and Prim are likely the only descendants of the Covey left. True, there is no "Covey" but as far as lineage goes, only these two living with the Covey blood, nor is it too distant. Burdock knows he is related to the Covey and where they bury their dead. Prim takes after their mother, who is pure town, while Katniss takes after her father's looks and has the voice of the Covey. Katniss may not know of this lineage until Haymitch shares his story, but this only goes along with "the chosen one" narrative. Many of them aren't aware of their true lineage. Like how Luke Skywalker doesn't know 1. his dad was a jedi and 2. his dad was Darth Vader.
Just because Haymitch doesn't see Katniss as a "chosen one" doesn't mean the narrative doesn't set her up that way. Snow hates mockingjays. Katniss becomes the mockingjay. Lucy Gray says the katniss aren't ready yet. Haymitch finds katniss in his arena. Katniss sings the Covey songs as part of the rebellion, songs that she only knows because of her father's rebellious Covey spirit. Hell, even Haymitch talking how he noticed her over the years because she was his Covey-related BFF's daughter marks her as different and special, too.
Suddenly, it wasn't about luck. Yes, there was timing, but once that timing was right, it was only Katniss who could step in and end the Capitol. Prim being reaped as one slip in thousands (or perhaps rigged like Lucy Gray and Haymitch?) and Peeta being her partner are no longer really random luck. They're part of the story destiny (Lucy Gray) is weaving, because of her lineage (Covey).
That makes her in every way a Chosen One now.

The Feral One • Epilogue
Finnick x Y/N
Series Masterlist Link
Prequel is coming in a few months! I haven’t made a Taglist yet and probably won’t start one till I’m closer to publishing. I’ll make a post tagging this series’ Taglist when I’m starting the next one.
Content Warnings - Mentions of fertility issues/miscarriage; death; the end of this series (don’t worry it’s a good ending imo)

Dear Brielle,
A lot has happened in seventeen years. I’ve now lived half of my life without you, mom, and dad. I’ve been thinking about you a lot so my husband Finnick (yes that Finnick lol) said I should write you a letter of all the things I wanted to tell you but never could.
A little over ten years ago we killed President Snow. The districts rebelled and won. The war was brutal and there were times I nearly died, but Finnick pulled me through.
We got married a year later. We never really did the whole dating thing, our friendship just evolved into a beautiful romance overnight. He was there for me after you left and he has been here ever since.
The years since the war have not been easy. I’ve had bouts of seizures that leave me bedridden and ill for days. The doctors said my condition should be worse so I should be grateful. Countless medications and treatments have made slight improvements to my health but the pain will always be there.
Two years after our wedding we almost hit our breaking point. Finnick and I had been trying to start a family for over a year but nothing was working. It was the most frustrating experience of my life post-war and I do not wish those struggles on anyone.
Three years after our wedding, Mags passed of old age. Although we were sad, we were all glad she got to live out her last few years in a free Panem. Johanna decided to move in with Annie afterwards so she wouldn’t be alone. We are still neighbors to this day.
Four years after our wedding, I got pregnant, only to lose the baby a few months in due to a bad seizure. This was Finnick and I’s lowest point to date.
It’s now been a bit over 9 years since I married the love of my life and the father of my child. We were finally blessed with a baby boy, Neptune, 4 years ago today. He is everything I could have asked for in a child; rambunctious, kind, and adventurous. He looks just like his father but acts like his mother.
Two years ago, Neptune’s best friend arrived in District 4. Annie and Johanna adopted a little girl, Jodie, from District 7. Neptune and her do EVERYTHING together. Finnick keeps joking that we should build a tunnel between our two houses so the kids can hang out all the time.
All in all, it’s been a very painful 34 years of existence. Part of me is glad you didn’t have to witness what happened. The other part of me still hopes you’re out there, even though I know you aren’t. I hope that wherever you are, you’re at peace.
Love, your dear sister,
Y/N

The Next Hunger Games Prequel
WARNING! SUNRISE ON THE REAPING SPOILERS AHEAD!
So first off, I think we are all agreed that the next book Suzanne Collins is going to write is going to be about Finnick's Games. It would make sense as he is an integral part of the last two books and there are a lot of interesting angles and information that could be revealed in said book. However, I have some thoughts on how I think the book will be written, or, at the very least, on an interesting direction the book could go.
First though, I have to explain some things.
So am I the only one that has kind of noticed a pattern between The first Hunger Games Trilogy and the way that these new books are written?
Because, if you compare the general plots and ideas discussed in The Hunger Games Trilogy books and their corresponding new ones, they are kind of similar?
For example, the first Hunger games book follows Katniss' first Games. Pretty simple and straight forward. It introduces us to the concept of the Games, how they work, etc, etc. You get reaped, you train and interview and jump through hoops, you win the Games, you go home. And The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes kind of follows the same pattern. Snow is "reaped" by being told which district he will mentor, he jumps through all of the hoops to make Lucy Gray as desirable as possible, the Games happen, then he gets sent off to 12.
Of course there is more nuance to the story than that, but it still feels introductory. For the first time, we get to see the Hunger Games from the Capitol Perspective. Snow knows it's a game, much like Katniss, and does his best to play the game well, but still ends up cheating the system and facing repercussions for it. They generally follow the same kind of pattern.
The same could be seen in Catching Fire and Sunrise on the Reaping. While yes, the Game do happen in these books, they are not as much of a central part of the books as before. More of the focus is on the politics and performance that surrounds the games. We see Katniss and Peeta on their Victory Tour and how Snow is trying to control Katniss through threats and tricks and games. The same way he does with Haymitch before his own games after Haymitch shows Snow Louella after the Tribute Parade. Snow psychologically fucks with Haymitch at every turn before his Games, much as he does with Katniss (and probably countless other tributes he deemed as 'troublesome'). Despite this fuckery, both Haymitch and Katniss try to stick it to Snow and the Capitol as much as they can. We also see Katniss and Haymitch both forming alliances and making friends, which does not happen in the first books, but leads to a lot of heartbreak in their respective books. There is also the major plot point of a secret plan that the tributes are involved in, with the only difference being Haymitch knew and Katniss did not, as well as the success of those plots.
Another interesting note is that both Catching Fire and Sunrise on the Reaping do not end with their main characters in District 12. Of course, we know that Katniss gets taken to 13 after the arena falls apart. But in the epilogue of SOTR, Haymitch isn't really in 12 either, at least not the way it was during the Games. This is an important distinction because it signals that we are now moving away from 12 as a focus and moving on towards a more Panem focused view, which carries into Mockingjay as Katniss flies around Panem rallying troops and fighting Capitol forces.
This is where my idea for Finnicks Book comes in. As Mockingjay doesn't have a Hunger Games, I don't think Finnick's book will either. If Suzanne Collins is following the same pattern as her first trilogy, she is not going to include Finnicks actual games in the book. And, if you think about it, why would she? As far as we know right now, Finnick's Games were normal. He got reaped and he won. The intrigue of Finnick doesn't start until after his games when he started getting trafficked by Snow. So why would his book include the not interesting part of Finnick's story? As much as I don't want to read about Finnick getting trafficked, I think it would be an interesting way for Suzanne to show us just how the Rebellion was able to build power and influence over time, especially throughout the districts and within the Capitol. Who better to tell that story, to convey information, to get people on their side than the boy who is already being carted around and sold to the highest bidder? Who eventually starts trading in secrets instead of money? Who has the power to use those secrets as bargaining chips over the Capitol elite to get any information that he wants?
I think the book will start with his Victory Tour. I think over the course of the book we will get information about his games, but it won't be wholly central to the story. I think that it will start with his Victory tour and we will get the snippets of how he starts to get groomed to be trafficked, ending with his first encounter in the Capitol at their big party. I also think this would be an interesting way to bring Tigris back as his stylist or as a connection that he has in the Capitol. After his tour, I think we will get time jumps. Him being trafficked and gathering information. Him being a mentor and talking with other Victors and meeting Plutarch. Him meeting Annie. I think we will get all of these jumps and the book will end when he is reaped for the 75th Games and the plot involving Katniss and Peeta is formed.
Because that is what happened in Mockingjay. Katniss working with the Rebellion, building their power, being their pawn, in order to defeat Snow. It would only make sense, to see these characters all reflecting Katniss, for Finnick to do and be the same.
Look I’m not saying this is what’s going to happen. And if it’s not, okay. But I still think it’s at least a cool concept that, if I had the fanfiction skill, I would totally write.

Bleu's Reviews - Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (Hunger Games Prequel)
Suzanne Collins takes us back to Panem, a decade after the rebellion, to explore the origins of Coriolanus Snow, the infamous President Snow. This prequel masterfully delves into themes of identity, power, and survival while painting a vivid picture of a boy shaped by a brutal world. The opening sets a grim tone as Coryo and Tigris witness their neighbor cannibalize the maid, a harrowing event…
