The Last 65 Days

Driving along Dr. Djundjunan earlier this morning on the way to KBP, as the sun started to get higher, I caught myself admiring the trees that line up the sides of the road. There are also trees on both sides of the street where Bumi Pancasona is located. I love looking at them, especially the ones that have grown tall. These trees, they have broad canopies, dotted with small yellow flowers, sometimes red. How I wish I knew the name of those trees.

As if the universe wanted to offer some kind of consolation, not long after that thought, I came across an Instagram reels featuring Jane Goodall. In the clip, she said:

I remember sitting in the forest one day alone, and this beautiful fly, I've never seen one before or since, it had all sorts of colors, and it sat on my knee. And I looked at it and my mind said "it's a fly." As soon as you say it's a fly, you take away from it the magic. And yet we can't help but do it, that's how we're brought up. Something must have a name. But I try very hard in that moment to just think of it as a being, as a part of this natural beautiful tapestry of life. And so for me it's as though it's one connected whole: me and the wilderness, the wildlife around me. And if I have a soul, then it's a little piece of this amazing harmony, the spirit. And if I have this, then so does that little fly.

There you go. These are the trees. They live, they grow, they have soul. Just like me. Learning names doesn't matter anymore. There's another way of seeing and it demands a different kind of learning.

I rode the usual route, taking time to snap some photos and admire the morning glory blooming by the side of the path. The weather was nice, with the terrain dry and extra dusty. Even though I didn’t quite have the legs today, it was still a pleasant ride.

I got a share of heartbreak today when I heard the news of Namaste's passing. Not going into details how it happened, I just wanted to honor her memory by writing here how sweet of a cat she was, always there in front of Danta greeting everyone. She liked to get cozy inside the building that she learned to open the sliding front door. She’d keep visitors company as they waited to be picked up after classes. Every time I went to Danta, seeing her sitting on the mat by the entrance always lit me up. But what I’ll remember most are her adorable little kneading paws. She’ll be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, beautiful soul. Happy crossing the Rainbow Bridge.

The Last 79 Days

Mid-October, and the season hasn't changed much. From a climate standpoint, I know this isn't a good sign, but I can't help feeling grateful being granted another sunny day.

V had a class at Pancasona Club today, so I drove her to KBP as early as 6 AM. I didn’t mind because while V was teaching, I had an hour to hit the usual Cipangeran gravel loop on the outskirts of town.

Before getting into the main course of the route, I went past this house with a yard that's really a graveyard. What stopped me on my path was the orange cat walking toward one of the tombs and on the mound of the grave! It's proof that cats' job is to disrespect you, in both life and death.

I took the picture of the minion of the devil and realized that I was standing under a jam fruit tree, colloquially known in this part of the world as kersen tree. This tree is one of the central characters in the early episodes of my life. There was a kersen tree growing at the house next door, that I used to climb when I was around nine or ten. It was a basecamp for me and the kids in the neighborhood, and each of us had dibs on our own spots.

One day, there were the three of us (me, Yanti, and another kid whose name and face I forgot) up in the tree when we heard a cracking noise. The next thing we knew the tree fell from the base of its bark, like some giant invisible hand just snapped it down. The whole thing happened in slow motion, it seemed like forever for the tree to hit the ground. When it did, we got down and the adults rushed toward us, freaking out. We were all okay. We laughed it off when the adults scolded us for climbing the tree, for all we knew it was a cool experience (I told everyone in school the next day). In retrospect, that was probably the closest I’ve ever come to a near-death experience.

Okay, flashback's over. Please join me back to the present moment as I stood under another kersen tree, in the body of a thirty-four-year-old woman. I looked up and saw some kersen fruits within my reach. I plucked one from its twig, the one that looked ripe. When I squeezed the berry in my mouth, the sweet juice and the feel of the fine seeds on my tongue were so familiar. It's the sweet I knew from my childhood, Mother Nature's timeless recipe.

The ride was as usual, nothing stood out in particular. So was the day, which is okay.

The Last 93 Days

V had a 7AM class at a sport club in KBP so today I did the unthinkable: interval workout. I did it only because I knew the unpaved paths surrounding KBP area would be wet and muddy and I only had 1 hour to kill before going back to the city. I mean, fuck it, let's hate cycling for 60 minutes, right? I used one of the stock planned workouts that came with the Roam, only managed to complete the one set of 6 x 1 minute effort at 120% FTP (whatever the fuck that means) before making excuse that I gotta be back at Pancasona to come pick V up.

Not sure if it's the ride or that I'm probably in the luteal phase, I was already tired by midday. The 30-minute afternoon nap turned into a gratuitous 4-hour slumber, interrupted only by a meeting at 2PM. Consequently, I had to cover the lost hours tonight and possibly across the week. Ah, the joy and the sorrow of working remotely.

I got to thinking about Inside Out 2 again, particularly the part where Riley woke up early to get some ice time in the rink. The whole time she practiced, Anxiety was on the console, ruling Riley's emotions. At some point, Anxiety said "hockey is not a game, it is a sport". That's pretty much how I felt during the workout. Maybe that's why I hated it, it makes cycling too much more of a sport rather than a game you play with joy. But I guess a change of pace wouldn't hurt once in a while. Just because things are good, it doesn't always mean they're enjoyable.

Loved the weather today, a bit windy, clear blue sky, and no rain. Just how I like it.
