I’m working on a copycat of the Dornish dresses from GoT:

I was test-draping on my dress form last night and i made some mistakes with the grain but the pattern itself is actually not that complicated.

The original gowns were mostly made of silk organza but some were cotton muslin. I would not recommend using organza if you don’t need the gown to be this sheer. It’s difficult to cut and the cut edges are scratchy. You really can’t get away with leaving edges raw. A rayon-silk or cotton-silk blend would be a good choice if you still want some sheen, and very lightweight cotton if you don’t. Silk *does* have the advantage of being much easier to dye, and crepe de chine is easier to handle if you can afford it. It won’t have the floaty fullness of the other options but it’ll feel lovely against the skin.
Zag is a prince and I want the slip to show through so I will be using silk organza. Thankfully it’s relatively affordable at $7-9 a yard (undyed from Dharma Trading Co.) so I can get 5yds of it. I’ve also got plans to attempt making ronghua for his laurels! If that fails I will make them out of the scrap from the gown.

This is the concept for my Zagreus outfit.

Ribbons laid over a piece of black organza to get an idea of the colors. I’m waiting on an order of undyed organza and some beads in suitably fiery warm tones. I also need to dig through my local shop for a tablecloth to use for the slip because somehow i don’t have any appropriate fabric in sufficient yardage.

Is there anything as satisfying as cutting back the fabric behind a lace applique?

Pressing your seams really is so key to making anything look polished. Also, look at my beautiful backstitching that will never be seen again:

Round 1.5 of dyeing for the masquerade outfits: the fabric for Zag’s slip and the organza corset that will provide structure for the gown. This was done using a mix of roughly equal parts ‘pagoda red’ and ‘burgundy’ procion MX dyes from Dharma Trading. The dye bath looks like a deep garnet but the dry fabric will be closer to ruby. I may need to do another round with more of the pagoda red to make things a little more warm-toned.
