...so I just got to the end of Just Cause 4, and-

Look, see, the premise of the original Just Cause game was that you were an agent of "The Agency", an American intelligence agency, who was trained in destabilizing dictatorships that America wanted gone.

And over the course of the games, the Agency has been portrayed in worse and worse lights. As far as I can find they're basically portrayed as the good guys in the first game, in the second game they're just one of many foreign powers trying to take over Panau's oil fields (and Rico doesn't hand control over to them either), they enabled the dictatorship of the third game until recently (and are trying to gain influence over the nascent rebellion), and in the fourth game they are straight up the backers behind the main villain and also helped kill Rico's father before kidnapping him as a 17 year old and training him to be an agent.

Just Cause 4 ends with Rico, now knowing the Agency has been using him all his life, vowing to take down the Agency.

The thinly-veiled CIA equivalent.

Just Cause 5, if it ever happens, will be about destroying the CIA.

Will that game ever happen? Because that would be ballsy.

Tuesday, May 21st 2024. Kaikōura > Paraparaumu.

They say you haven't lived until you do a 2 hour drive from Kaikōura to Picton, wait two hours to be onboarded for the evening ferry to Wellington, fall asleep for three hours, then run to the baby changing room to throw up, then go back to your seat to fall asleep again, then drive an additional 40 minutes to get to Paraparaumu in terrential rain on the unlit motorway for a 2:30am arrival in the morning. So today, dear reader, we did just that.

It did, however, start far less dramatically as we traded the land for the sea and took two separate trips out onto the ocean. The first was the to see the vaseline fishes of New Zeaand, the sperm whales. Thankfully the whales weren't bothered about the rain in Kaikōura this morning and decided to show up and flap around for us (very gracefully, I might add), along with their pals the shark, the orcas (including a lil baby), and the dolphins, as well as some more fur seals on Panau Island.

9000 fin pics later we grabbed lunch and I took a much needed nap, before we drove another couple of hours to Picton and the aforementioned lunacy happened, although for one final bit of madness - the beachside parking we had at Paraparaumu exposed us to some very intense winds that rocked the campervan and surrounding cars all night long, so not exactly the ideal circumstances when you needed a lie-in.

Tomorrow we are travelling to Tongariro National Park and hopefully leaving the rain behind us.
