World Ocean Day
Hi Divers,
Below is a great article by Iwan de Lugt. The Brunei government has made a huge step in shark conservation. Hopefully many countries will follow.
___________________________________________________________________________
Dear all,
I attended the Open Forum Session on the ban of Shark Products on Saturday, during the World Ocean Day 2013 Celebrate the Sea festival. The forum was well attended, including members of the MIPR fisheries department and quite a few school children.
First of all: it was announced on Saturday that with immediate effect the import and fishing of shark, shark fins and shark products into Brunei is banned. This includes targeting sharks or landing sharks as by-catch by local fishers. Brunei is one of the first countries in the world to implement this ban and the first ASEAN member to do so. The move is a result of a larger effort to counter falling fish (and shark) stocks in Brunei waters, and also counters a recent increase in shark fin imports which was found out not to be for domestic consumption but for re-export with the aim to circumvent several trade regulations in receiving countries…
During the forum, there was a lively discussion focussing on varying aspects of shark fishing and its impact on shark populations. It was discussed that government intervention in the form of bans and quota is one way to attempt sustainable fishery, but that consumer awareness would also play an important role as trade is demand driven. It was pointed out that the shark fin trade is inherently destructive for the marine ecosystem due to the apex-predator position sharks take in the food web; most shark species are easily overfished and the lack of regulation in national and international waters results in population collapse of many species due to short-term profit driven mentality of the industry.
Children in the audience were involved in the discussion and asked questions. John Lu of Sharksavers, one of the panelists, told them that they could make an impact by creating awareness, both at home in their families as well as online using social media.
A more comprehensive account can be found in the attached article and links.
