Agbara's Baby | A Short Story | Part 1
Tumblr media
"C'mon Ty, you need to get out every now and then." Jackson Blackthorn leaned across the massive oak credenza in their upscale Midtown Atlanta law office. The mahogany shelves lining the walls were filled with leather-bound books, and sleek silver sculptures added a modern touch to the room's deep, earthy tones. The faint scent of cedar mixed with the richness of expensive cologne. This office screamed money, power, and status.
"Jackson, I know you, man. These chicken heads..."
"Whoa nelly! Amber was not a chicken head," Jackson shot back, pointing a manicured finger. His rich brown skin glowed beneath the soft office lighting. "She was a beautiful Black goddess that you decided was a bit too spicy for your taste."
"Too spicy? Man, she asked me to go to this swinger's club with her and watch her go down on a 95-year-old man. Gross!"
Jackson exploded with laughter, gripping his side as he nearly toppled from his leather executive chair. His tailored charcoal suit stretched across his broad shoulders, and the perfectly knotted silk tie around his neck seemed oddly out of place in such a chaotic moment.
"You know," Jackson wheezed, trying to catch his breath, "if you came to the club with me, all your woman problems would be solved."
Almost instantly, Jackson's face shifted from laughter to something more serious. His dark eyes locked onto Ty's, demanding more than just attention.
"Man, you know how I feel about that place. My answer is still no," Ty Sauron replied firmly, setting his gold pen down on his legal pad. There was no compromise in his voice. Jackson had been pressing him to join the secretive fraternity since their law school days, but Ty sensed something... unnatural about its members.
"Since you refuse to join the club," Jackson said with a smirk, "and you're absolutely terrible at finding love, then I'm all you got, buddy." He straightened his suit coat and strolled toward Ty, his polished loafers clicking against the polished hardwood floor. "Be ready at 7 p.m. You won't be disappointed, bruh. I promise."
Scene 2
LaToya Nash never went on a first date hungry. That was one of her personal rules. She sat at her rustic wooden dining table in her stylish Druid Hills loft, savoring the rich, savory broth she'd just prepared. The exposed brick walls and towering tropical plants transported her apartment into a lush urban jungle. Afternoon sunlight gleamed through her oversized windows, warming the room in golden hues.
"You owe me, Jackson," she muttered between sips. Her cousin had begged her to go out with one of his law partners, and she'd reluctantly agreed.
"This soup is sooo good," she purred, licking her lips. The secret was boiling the beef with the blood still fresh—just the way her grandmother taught her. "Cooking meat this way always gives it that mmmmm flavor."
Her iPhone buzzed against the table. She snatched up the glittering case. "Hello."
"You need to be there by 7:30 p.m. I'm picking Ty up at 7, and I told him he wouldn't be disappointed."
"Cuz, you don't have to worry," LaToya said with a teasing smile. "I'll be there."
Slurp, her fluffy black cat, strolled lazily across the room and rubbed against her leg. His golden eyes gleamed in the fading sunlight.
"Alright, don't be late." Jackson's voice carried a sharp edge before he hung up.
LaToya sighed and stirred her soup, her thoughts drifting. Jackson could be intense, but she trusted him. Since he'd introduced her to the club, her life had completely transformed. Now the head of social media marketing for The Main Idea, one of the nation's top marketing firms, LaToya was thriving. Her exclusive loft in Druid Hills was proof of her success. Soon, she'd be sipping cocktails on the beaches of Bali—all expenses paid.
LaToya gazed around her beautifully curated home. The tropical plants, shipped directly from Madagascar, swayed gently in the breeze from her ceiling fan. Dragging her long, manicured nails through her thick, woolly blond curls, she whispered under her breath.
"No, Cuz. I won't disappoint you."
