“Ovid; The Empires”; 60 x 48 inches; acrylic polymer, ink, vinyl, oil on canvas. Part of the Un-civilized series. In this series of paintings I use abstraction to translate the outcomes of social constraints, creating sharp edges and then blurring those boundaries with painterly passages. Publius Ovidius Naso was a Roman poet who was extremely popular, And yet emperor Augustus banished him to the Black Sea until his death. It seems to be a pattern that when an empires is on the cusp of falling it begins to eliminate its culturally rich contributors. I often think about why abstraction is the perfect vehicle for visually articulating the feel of an event or experience the artist wants to convey. For me I love the challenge of letting the brush, form and colors do the talking. It’s also important to me that the painting takes on many narratives, not just the one it started with. A most charming collector friend of mine in Toronto sent me pics of his painting, Duality (from my HOLIDAY EVERYDAY series), installed on the walls of his brand new condo. I love how the painting works in this space, and can be seen from both the second story mezzanine, as well as from the main floor… it’s a gorgeous, light-filled space, and the colors seem to dance across the canvas. What an honour for my artwork to occupy such a central location in his beautiful, new home! "Indentured III" 2017 WIP this piece considers the middle passage ocean voyage of slaves/indentured servants. I took the footage on the Atlantic on roughly the same passage, tracing the steps of my great grandparents as indentured servants. This is how I love love love to see my art hanging... this gorgeous Connecticut home was artfully decorated by @lchinteriors. You can’t see it in these photos, but there are rooms that open up off of each side of the space where this funky sofa is: in one room, the wallpaper is a sage green motif, on the other side, it’s lavender. The designer sent me swatches so that I could really get a feel for the space, as I prepared the two commissioned paintings. I knew it would look good, but I never imagined that it could look THIS good! She told me that a passerby actually knocked on the door and asked to see the artworks up close... how’s that for a generous compliment?! And yes: THAT SOFA...
