ok my number one beef with water colour painting is that i have to wait for bits to dry before i can continue in order to get the results i want, which makes it quite hard to gain momentum and just sort of sink in to it. its a lot more disciplined than i'm used to being with any kind of arts or craftsy suff, and thats frustrating.

i know itll come more naturally as i get to (re) learning the medium but right now its deeply annoying because i just want to go hog wild and i caaaaannnntttt

my number 2 beef with water colour painting is that the water has dissolved the glue holding my sketchbook together and all the pages have fallen out :(

It is time to go back in time, and look at the old 'Comics'. In all three senses of the word, Comic strips, Comic books, and the Comic performer. Grab your bowler hat, cane, and toothbrush mustache, and join me while I read this great "Platinum Age" comic book/painting/coloring book from 1917. We will encounter Charlie Chaplin in his early days, from his days in the silent films, to his adventures in the daily comic strips. Along the way we will see art by; Stuart Wallace Carothers, Warren & Ramsey, Elzie Crisler Segar {creator of Popeye}. Entry 5 in the insect sketchbook. This is the Western Hercules Beetle (Dynastes grantii). This beetle is found mainly in Arizona, Utah and Mexico. They reach up to 80mm in length and only males have horns. The length and size of these insects depend on the resource availability during developing stages. The larva feed on rotting wood and adults are known to eat the sap of ash trees. A very interesting fact is that their exoskeleton changes to a darker color when wet. At the bottom of the page, i drew a dynastes grantii pupa. The pupa stage is the bridge between the larval and adult stage. The larva encases itself in a cocoon where it lies dormant and develops into an adult beetle. This stage can take anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple years depending on the beetle.
