Strange Symmetries #13: The Hermit Crab Cycle
Hermit crabs are crustaceans that first appeared at the start of the Jurassic, about 201 million years ago. Despite their common name they aren't actually true crabs, instead being a classic example of convergently evolving a crab-like body plan via carcinization.
They also have noticeably asymmetric bodies, with abdomens that coil to one side and differently-sized front claws.
Tumblr media
Pagurus bernhardus by Arnstein Rønning | CC BY 3.0
And while modern hermit crabs are famous for inhabiting scavenged snail shells, their fossil record suggests this wasn't always the case.
Originally, they seem to have lived in ammonite shells.
Palaeopagurus vandenengeli lived in what is now northern England during the Early Cretaceous, about 130 million years ago. Around 4-5cm long (~1.6-2"), it was found preserved inside the shell of the ammonite species Simbirskites gottschei.
Its left claw was much larger than its right, and together they would have been used to block the shell opening when it was hiding away inside. And while the exact shape of its abdomen isn't known, it probably asymmetrically coiled to the side to accomodate the spiralling shape of the host shell.
Hermit crabs seem to have switched over to using gastropod shells by the Late Cretaceous, around 90-80 million years ago, possibly due to marine snails developing much stronger sturdier shells during this period in response to the increasing prevalence of specialized shell-crushing predators. The more upright snail shells would also have been much easier to drag around the seafloor than ammonite shells – and meant that they were ultimately less affected by the total disappearance of ammonites during end-Cretaceous mass extinction.

#1964 - Diacanthurus rubricatus
Tumblr media
A large Pagurid hermit crab, endemic to most of the coastlines of New Zealand. I don’t have much other information on them, unfortunately. Often found with anemones living on the shell, and a small copepod Kioloaria tapui that lives in the tip of the shell, discovered in 1982.  ‘tapui’, means ‘close friend'.

Am doing okay, it's good that you are too! I'd love to hear about any of the two, I find hermit crabs cute :>
- @batsbolts-andfangs
I’m glad you’re doing good!!
As you may know, hermit crabs are, well, crabs ofcourse! They belong to the family Paguridae and Coenobitidae! These crabs use empty snail shells (e.g., whelk or periwinkle) or other hollow objects as their home! However, painted shells are no good. Painted shells can poison them, and they will end up dying from them :(. So if you see a hermit crab with a painted shell, give them a regular shell if you can find one nearby! They’ll slowly switch shells. Might just save their life :3!!
Tumblr media
Many people own hermit crabs, there are many species so I can’t go into direct care like heating and humidity as they’re all different depending on the subspecies. However, hermit crabs need both water and land to survive! Hermit crabs, can infact drown. To properly house hermit crabs, you should have a enclosure which is mainly land, with two large pools of water, one salt one fresh, as they require both to survive. They also require calcium in their enclosure! One way to provide this is by giving them cuttlefish bones and they’ll chip away at it overtime. Hermit crabs can not survive on pellets or food targeted as "hermit crab food". They require a fresh mix of fruit, veg, meat/protein, and more. They’re not easy to feed! You have to do a lot of research into their diet. One of the most common reasons for hermit crab death in captivity is diet.
Tumblr media
Please note that hermit crabs CANNOT be bred in captivity, as of today. Maybe in the future it’ll become possible, but so far we have had no success breeding these crabs. We don’t know why, but it’s just not happening. So any hermit crab you buy, will be wild caught. Ontop of that, Hermit crabs experience immense stress when suddenly in a new environment. To deal with this, you have to slowly build up their habitat around them, or you’ll have a stressed hermit who will die. Overall, hermitcrabs are decently hard to keep, but if you’re commited, they’ll make wonderful pets. Just be careful who you buy one from, what you put in the enclosure, and what you feed them. Do your proper research, as usual!
Tumblr media
Now onto fun facts!
• These crustaceans have been misnamed for two reasons: First, they’re not true crabs, like blue crabs, in that they don’t have a uniformly hard exoskeleton and can’t grow their own shells. Instead, hermit crabs have a hard exoskeleton on the front part of their bodies but a soft tail on the other half, which they protect using the discarded shells of other animals, like whelks. They’re more closely related to certain kinds of lobsters than to true crabs!
• Hermit crabs have a curled tail with a hook that enables their bodies to fit inside these borrowed shells.
• Sometimes when a new shell turns up, hermit crabs will form a line, biggest to smallest, to see which animal fits the new shell
• Hermit crabs are social creatures, and must be kept in duos or more! You’ll also find them like this in the wild!
• There are over 800 species of hermit crabs worldwide!
Thank you for coming to murruyu’s rant!

#Repost from @pezdepie with @ming.app . #ecología #biología #educacioninfantil #educacionambiental @buceoiquique #cuidemosnuestropatrimonio #educacion #patrimonionaturalsubmarino #playablanca #areasmarinasproteguidas @aula_azul #underwaterphoto #freediving #underwaterworld #ilovedive #Iquique #uwlife #uwphotography #scuba #scubadiving @chileesmar https://www.instagram.com/p/B-c7zZ7hZSI/?igshid=6uhjcsywxpj3

Pagurus bernhardus
Common hermit-crab

Researchers have just discovered a new hermit crab species!!  Named Candy striped hermit crab (Pylopaguropsis mollymullerae), this species is described based on specimens from the shallow reefs of Bonaire, Lesser Antilles, southern Caribbean Sea. The description it was release in the january issue of zookeys.
Populations of this new species were discovered and photographed in the Bonaire National Marine Park under a large coral ledge, at a depth of 13.7 m, living in crevices close to flaming reef lobsters (Enoplometopus antillensis), and broad banded moray (Channomuraena vittata).
Tumblr media
The highly visible color pattern of bright red stripes on white background typical of decapods known to have cleaning symbioses with fish, dense hair-like setaes on antennae, and preference for a crevicular habitat, combined with brief in situ nocturnal observations, suggests the possibility that Candy striped hermit crab engages in “cleaner” activities or functions as a “den commensal” with moray eels.

Ammonoids are an extinct group of cephalopods, unique in having full exoskeletal spiraled shells, as opposed to squids and octopuses.  However, despite having an external shell like modern Nautiluses, they are evolutionarily more related to the squids and octopuses.

Modern hermit crabs always use empty shells and never kill the original occupant,  probably these paguridos did the same.
