Mesa Verde
10/22/13 – Had a great plan today-leave Cortez, spend a few hours in Mesa Verde National Park (MVNP), and move on to La Junta, a mere 6 hours away. Well, after spending 6 hours in the park, getting most of the way across the state was not an option, mainly because I just didn’t have to rush. So I found a spot in Pagosa Springs, two hours down the road from Cortez.
Mesa Verde-I can’t really describe it, you just have to go and then we’ll compare notes. There are things you see that just move you. If you are not moved deeply by these sites, check your pulse. I have been trying to get to MVNP for years, after seeing Walnut Canyon in Arizona and a few smaller Anasazi (PC term is ancestral Puebloan) sites over the years. I guess the strongest things I feel are a sense of the civilization-not a clan or a tribe or even one town/village-and I hope that children are learning about these things in school, since I did not. Then of course I thought about the planning, the work, the organization, the dedication that make such a civilization possible-not just the building, but resource management (farming, water, hunting). One thing I learned here today- actually here and at the museum in Utah-was that the people here first lived in mesa-top structures like I have seen in New Mexico, then built and moved into the cliff dwellings. Of course, the pueblo ruins I saw in New Mexico are newer. The move may have been defensive, but involved more work and organization than living on their mesa-top farms.
Another discovery today was the Chapin Mesa Museum. Sure, I have seen bowls and tools and the like in other museums, but one really interesting item was the 31 pounds of 700-year-old corn found in a cave in a jar with a small bowl on top to keep pests away.
I passed on getting up close to the biggest ruin-Cliff Palace-since I didn’t need to be in it to appreciate it and I had no need to climb a bunch of stairs and ladders at this elevation. I made the short hike down to Spruce Tree House, which was still so very impressive and large. I also managed to get away from the crowds (light-can’t imagine this place in season) and hike the Soda Canyon/Balcony House overlook. Only one other person on the trail. The most striking overlook was at Sun Point, from where you can see multiple structures and appreciate or wonder how or when the people got together. These things are not a close walk apart.
One critical item I brought was the telephoto (55-200) lens. UPS delivered it on the last full day I was in my old house. No way to photograph MVNP without it.
Not having planned a stop in Pagosa Springs, I consulted Trip Advisor and found a place to stay. The guy working at the hotel suggested Riff Raff Brewing Company for food and a beverage, and what a call! I laughed my butt off while ordering “The Dude” burger. The food and beers were great. They also have a “Big Lambowski” sandwich.
I will not name the hotel, but it reminded me of the Wombats’ lyric from “Jump into the Fog” - The kind of place where you should bring your own UV ray. And it wasn’t that cheap.

In Pagosa Springs, CO we get what I call backward sunsets. This is a view of Pagosa Peak that is northeast of us. The colors are the reflection of the gorgeous sunset that is west of us. Decision made: I made the run/hike to Pagosa Peak in honor of my BRF, Bev Buss! I started late so had to really hustle to make the 5+ mile journey to the top. I could feel her presence as we ascended to 12,000'+ elevation. We were rewarded with this stunning view to the south. #gonebutneverforgotton #bestrunningfriend #running #pagosaspringsco #kindredspirit #oneofakind (at Pagosa Peak)
