Romantic Confessions Part 18
Part 18/30
18. "We have just met and yet it feels like I have known you for a lifetime."
Pairing: Thorn x Fox
Rating/WC: T/2082
Warnings: None <3
Notes: I'm so sorry this took so long to get out! I really really struggled with this prompt, but I hope I did it justice!
~~~
Fox rubs at the spot on his forehead just above his brow, trying to soothe the oncoming headache. He’s been awake too long, a couple rotations at least, and his caf is starting to have less of a useful effect on him. He sips at his now cold drink anyway, choking it down without wincing.
His new commander should be here sometime soon, fresh out of ARC training, and he’ll take a good chunk of Fox’s responsibilities off his plate. He and his commanders are already stretched way too thin.
“Sir?” greets him from the doorway to his office, and Fox looks up from his datapad to see Stone. “Did you stay here all night?”
Fox grumbles and looks back down to his report, sipping his caf again. “I’m almost done with these reports.”
“We’re going to have to sit through another lecture from Patchup about the use of stims, sir,” Stone says with a tired tone, crossing his arms over his chest. “Again.”
Fox makes an affronted noise. “I haven’t used any stims, thank you very much.” He downs the rest of his cold caf, curling his lip in disgust and putting his mug back down. “I’ve been banned for life, Patchup thinks my heart will give out.”
“You just chugged half a cup of caf right in front of me,” Stone says, unimpressed.
“That isn’t a stim, though, is it?” Fox asks, looking up from his report to shoot Stone a grimace. It’s as close to a smile as Fox has gotten in a very long time, it feels like. Maybe since they left Kamino.
“It’s adjacent,” Stone argues, but doesn’t bother pushing it. “You need sleep. When was the last time you took a break?”
“What day is it?” he only half jokes, looking back to his report and swiping to the next page. He does not need to be reading this; a shiny could understand this banthashit and forge his signature, surely. “I took a nap at my desk a while ago, I’m fine.”
“I can’t wait for your new XO to get here, he’ll force you to actually delegate.” Stone steps into the room, uninvited, and sits at one of the chairs in front of Fox’s desk. “You can share some of the work, you know.”
“Then we’ll all be here late,” Fox mumbles, skipping to the bottom and sighing in relief when he realizes he only has a few paragraphs left. He finds where he left off and keeps reading. “Everyone is already overworked as it is.”
“You’re completely ridiculous,” Stone says, and Fox glares at him. “Sir,” he adds, as if that will make the statement less court-marshall worthy. “If you gave me even a couple extra tasks, you’d be able to take a night off. Do you even remember what the barracks look like? The boys miss your pretty face.”
Fox rolls his eyes, looking back down at his report and skimming the last few paragraphs to make sure it’s still very unimportant. He submits it and clicks on the next one-the last one, thankfully. “I do give you extra tasks, just not enough that we would both be here half the night. And I don’t sleep in the barracks anyway.”
“Ah, yes, my mistake Mr. Marshall-Commander, you’re above us grunts. Forgot.”
Fox makes a disgusted noise, looking up at Stone and throwing his datapad down. “Stone.”
Stone has the decency to actually look regretful, raising his hands in surrender. “Fine, too far. You could visit, every now and then, you know. Be good for morale.”
Fox works his jaw, going back to his last report. If Stone weren’t here, he might be done already, and he might be napping in his chair by now. Maybe, probably. “No it wouldn’t. They go all quiet when I’m around and it’s awkward.”
Stone shifts, wanting to deny it badly. “They just respect you, is all.”
“They’re scared I’ll bite,” Fox argues, baring his teeth in a mock of a smile just to demonstrate. “I piss people off, that’s my whole personality.”
“No,” Stone argues immediately, shooting Fox a real smile. He leans back in his chair and puts his boots on the desk- the heathen -and crosses his arms over his chest. “You’ve never managed to piss me off, and I’m very easy to piss off.”
“I don’t try to piss people off, I just always seem to.” Fox says, and then makes a face. “Well, the men anyway. My life’s purpose is to annoy Cody and Wolffe as much as humanly possible.”
Stone snorts at that, cocking his head to the side. “They’re funny when you piss them off, though. They’re so patient with literally everyone else, but you simply breathe and they start to get pissy.”
Fox hums, scrolling on the report and mostly skimming. “Batchmates are just different, I guess. Easier to annoy, I know all their buttons.”
“I’ve heard natborns say that’s what having siblings is like,” Stone adds, brows furrowed in thought. “My batchmates were the same way, I guess.”
Fox tenses his shoulders, all amusement leaving his body at once. This is potentially his very least favorite topic, either tied with or just behind discussing his own emotions and feelings with anyone. “Anyway, they’re uncomfortable when I’m around. Cody and Wolffe say their troopers are the same way, unless it’s their personal squad. Like you,” Fox says, nodding at Stone’s boots. “You’re obviously comfortable around me.”
Stone rolls his eyes but puts his feet back on the floor, leaning his elbows on the desk instead. “Very. The Big Bad Fox isn’t really all that intimidating, if you get to know him.”
“Don’t you have your own work to do?” Fox bites, rolling his shoulders. His tone is harsher than it had been, even if Stone knows him well enough to know it’s still mostly playful. “Because I have a few suggestions on what you could do instead of-”
“Commander Fox?” comes from his doorway, and Fox’s head snaps to the newcomer. He’s in full kit, including his kama but missing his pauldron. Understandable; a lot of clones find it more annoying and distracting than anything, himself included. “Am I interrupting?”
Stone stumbles to his feet and stands at attention, arms stiff at his sides. Fox has to bite his tongue to keep from laughing at the caught expression on his face. This newcomer technically doesn’t outrank Stone; he may be Fox’s new XO, but they would both be commanders. Fox is the only clone in Red who would outrank either of them.
“No,” Fox answers, standing up himself slowly and placing his datapad down. “Commander Stone was just leaving. Right, Commander?”
“Yes, sir,” Stone says, turning to face Fox with a click of his heels. His hand comes up to salute Fox, but the face he gives Fox is nothing short of unprofessional. He slides his helmet on and turns, nodding to the newcomer before leaving the office.
The new commander lets him pass, and then enters the office and shuts the door behind him. He stands at a parade rest, arms crossed behind his back at the wrists. “Commander Fox, I’ve been sent to report to you. I’ll be serving with the Guard under your command for the rest of the war.”
Fox nods, wishing he had his own helmet on right now. It’s always served as a shield for him, one which is far more necessary when dealing with the senate than on the battlefield. It would be rude, though, and might be seen as dismissive. “I was told I would be getting a new commander soon. What’s your name? Do you have one yet?”
The new commander pulls his helmet off, and Fox has to fight to not gasp. He’s gorgeous. He’s grown his hair out long, and the curls reach just below his chin. He’s either died them or he’s like Captain Rex with a mutation, but they’re blond and they look soft. His eyes are bright and full of life, curious maybe. The way he sets his jaw is different from the rest of them, and he holds himself more confidently than the average clone.
He’s simply gorgeous, and it’s incredibly distracting.
“Thorn,” he answers, a small smile growing on his lips. He tucks his helmet under his arm, and cocks his head to the side. “They didn’t tell you?”
Fox swallows thickly and tries to collect himself before he does something embarrassing. Like drool. He clears his throat, looking down at his reports before making eye contact again. “Might have, it’s um. I’ve looked at a lot of reports in the last few rotations.” He doesn’t mention that he hasn’t slept in that time, nor has he been taking note of anything less important than an assignment that requires decisions from him.
“Hm,” Thorn says, his smile growing and amusement coloring his tone. “Heavy workload, then?”
“I wouldn’t- it- yeah. Sure.” Fox looks away, internally cursing himself for his decision not to sleep. He couldn’t make this more awkward if he tried. “Lots of paperwork. It won’t be so bad with another commander to help.”
“Oh good, I love paperwork,” Thorn snarks, making Fox look back up at him. “I sure am glad I went through all that ARC training to do desk work.”
Fox rolls his eyes, forgetting his decorum for a moment. Usually it takes someone like Cody or Stone to make him forget himself like this, to make him feel comfortable enough to be human. Must be the sleep deprivation. “Welcome to the Guard, where the action is limited and the paperwork is infinite.”
“You should have been a salesman,” Thorn says, cocking his hip out and resting his helmet on it. “All that charm is going to waste here.”
“You’ll get it soon,” Fox says, trying not to bristle. He doesn’t know this clone, especially not well enough to be this sarcastic yet. “You’ll love the monotony and predictability of the job, it definitely doesn’t suck the life out of you.”
“Aw, come on, it can’t be that bad. I’ve heard some horror stories being spread around the GAR. Handsy senators, riotous prisoners, the whole nine yards.” Thorn smiles, really smiles, and Fox cannot breathe for a second. “I’m sure I’ll love it here.”
Fox feels a smile start to grow on his own face; a combination of seeing Thorn’s beautiful smile and the amusement from this conversation. He feels his shoulders relax, his whole body relax for the first time in a very long time. Thorn’s eyes widen fractionally, and his smile grows to show off his teeth. “I hope you will,” he adds after a pause just a bit too long. He’s pretty sure it’s obvious how infatuated he is.
Thorn’s eyes flit between Fox’s, and his smile melts into something more fond. “I know I will, if you’re here with me.”
Fox’s eyes widen and he swallows thickly. Shit. He’s never been flirted with, he doesn’t really know how to do this. But he really wants Thorn to keep doing it. “It’s good to- I’m glad you’re, uh,” Fox winces, wishing his brain was actually working right now instead of whatever it’s doing in this sleep-deprived haze. “I’m glad you’re here with me-too.”
Thorn laughs, eyes bright, and Fox actually gasps quietly at the sound. “We have just met, and yet it feels like I have known you a lifetime,” Thorn says, his smile dazzling.
Fox swallows, feeling like his heart might beat out of his chest. “I- I feel the exact same way.” And he doesn’t have the words to describe why that means so much, why this is so absurd for Fox.
Thorn smiles again, moving his helmet from under one arm to the other. “I’ve never been to Coruscant before, are there any good places to eat? It’s almost lunch time.”
Fox huffs a laugh, looking down at his datapad and thinking. He quickly sends the last report to Stone and turns it off, before looking up again. “I do, actually. Can I take you to one?”
“What a wonderful idea,” Thorn agrees, slipping his helmet back on before opening the door. “I can show you my quarters too, so I can change into civvies.”
Fox swallows thickly, putting his own helmet on. He definitely wants to see the inside of Thorn’s quarters. Maybe after lunch, though. “Lead the way, then,” he says, and ignores the glare Stone sends him from his own desk.
KGTAC PGS 2080-2082 ANALYSIS (Ft. Home-Skillet page 4 and 17)
The first two pages (Naming gag) have no notable story differences outside of minor art improvements (so i technically lied) BUT 4th page of ACT 2 (5.gif instead of of 4.gif, i guess there was a page in-between the two) has some MASSIVE differences. I'd recommend reading my first Analysis HERE as i will be referencing the one thing that was proven right.
KGTAC Page 2082
Tumblr media
Home-Skillet page 4
Tumblr media
As you can see there are many notable differences. But before i go on about said differences I'd like to point out that in my previous post, i noted there is no computer on screen on the desk, Which made be state "Which leads me wondering if a computer is even there, Since why else would it be off the panel." And i was right, there was no computer. I'd also like to note that the Page was edited so that the desk is no longer so huge, Fred is still a bit short As can be noted by comparing page 2082 with 2079 (look at the windows) but its a small issue. And if he we're any bigger then the pool would be obscured which would be much worse!
KGTAC PAGE 2079 (NOW)
Tumblr media
Now onto the differences, first I'd like to bring up the Narration differences between the two, Specifically anything unique they list for the character
KGTAC: Package for computer, he has tools to get the computer working, He is a Nintendo fanboy, and likes some musicians
Home-Skillet: Room is relatively tidy, a gamer who's very picky, and has an interest in fixing electronics, despite this fact he can't code
In Home-Skillet, he already had a computer, he had tools though that's in the art, not mentioned in narration. He might no longer have an interest in fixing electronics but its just a guess, it might just be unimportant to mention. Art Stuff: On the bottom right corner we now have the FLOPPY-DECK, which used to be inside the closet that we can no longer see in the image, the closet itself might not exist as we can't visually confirm it's existence, We now have a bigger window on the side as i don't remember that window existing from my reading of Home-Skillet. For some odd reason the Hotplate is now on the bottom left corner of the panel instead of the desk which it was on (disgusting, not a hint of tidiness). I'm guessing its so the reader can easily see the objects. Here's a nice closeup shot of the Floppy-Deck, man i love this thing, its such a cool concept.
Home-Skillet Page 17 (FLOPPY-DECK MY BELOVED)
Tumblr media
The Section with Genuine Speculation: There is now a shelf and window, though I'm uncertain of how they'll be important at the moment. My feelings with them are the same as with the pool. There's not much to speculate on story wise as of now. But i can assume it won't follow the same path as Home-Skillet, or if it does, it merely follows it in general rather than any specifics.
The Section with Hopes & Dreams: With some of these changes, i hope for the possibility that Fred won't get a sylladex for a while, Like you're telling me you can't trust him with a computer until he's 13 but you can trust him with an item which can launch anything at a force strong enough to break a window? It would also mean the Floppy-Deck as gimmicky as it is will be important for Fred, Especially if he doesn't figure out how to get more sylladex cards (Due to the fact you can merge items into 1 sylladex card) The Floppy Deck could be used as a safe way to get multiple items into a single card. Hell, In theory you could do && with the Floppy-Deck, its only meant to hold 1 item at a time, so if Fred is still interested in Electronic Tinkering, he could try and force it to take multiple items at once and since he's not very good at it, it instead causes the items to merge like in alchemization. It's starting to get a bit silly with my "theorizing" here but i really did like the Floppy-Deck and i felt it was somewhat underutilized. Sure its gimmicky, but Stack modus is gimmicky, hell most modi are gimmicky due to stupid rules, the only reasonable ones are like Array and Wallet modus. In theory the Floppy-Deck is like a bulkier version of the wallet modus, and i just really want to see it used to an extreme. In Conclusion, I will keep analyzing KGTAC with Home-Skillet as no one else seems to be doing it, and i will keep forgetting to join the KGTAC Discord. Also because i pick up on more things when i do this plus it's helpful to anyone looking for an analysis. Next Analysis
The part about the angels driving Eridan mad was hinted it by Doc Scratch when he was talking to Rose in page 3632. What would you say if I said a vengeful boy on a path of nihilism was taken under the wings of fearsome angels, and learned to destroy hope with their light? Then there was the talk about angels during Terezi and Sollux's conversation 2082, which happened before Sgrub initiated. TA: iit2 kiind of liike how a prophet earn2 hii2 2triipe2, by beiing bliind, liike how an angel earn2 iit2 wiing2. GC: WH4TS 4N 4NG3L TA: 2ome terriible mythiical demon. TA: wiith the2e awful feathery wiing2. GC: Y1K3S TA: paradox 2pace u2e2 them two u2her iin the end. GC: HOW DO3S 1T KNOW WH4T 4NG3L TO US3... ........ Angels were an important theme, especially as it involves Cherubs, who are somewhat angels themselves. Angels in the Homestuck context are seen as negative and are the ones bringing doom and misery wherever they go. The obvious example of it was Caliborn. Calliope is probably what is happening now for Beyond Canon through Alt Calliope.
Why are you trusting anything that Doc Scratch says? It's essentially told to you in the most blatant terms that you should not trust him. He groomed Vriska into violence and did the same to Rose to a lesser extent.
Regarding the "angels are used to usher in the end" thing, I have a different interpretation. Eridan, by siding with Jack and kicking off Murderstuck, is ushering in the end of the lives of Feferi, Kanaya (temporarily), Equius and Nepeta, as well as the entire troll race by destroying the Matriorb. He's living up to his designation as the Prince of Hope.
Considering that Caliborn/Lord English, and by extension Doc Scratch, are a. extremely misogynistic and b. hates trolls, Eridan is essentially an unknowing participant in Lord English's goals
NaNoWriMo: Day 15
Story: The Gilded Throne
Word Count: 2082
Total page count: 44
Best Line(s):
‘Franz doesn’t make empty promises. You can always rely on him to follow through.’ Omis sighed. ‘Even if his promises are impractical.’  With that he left Lowhan to lie there thinking over what he’d said. So he did know about Franz’s offer, though he’d called it a promise. But was he alright with the idea? Or was it another impractical promise?
Worth noting here how some Seers and Mages might acquire their foreknowledge of certain events, especially Doom-bound players. If your lunar sway has you dreaming on Prospit’s moon, you might glean visions from the clouds of Skaia, while Derse dreamers might hear the whispers of the Horrorterrors. Sollux, being in the unique position of having a dream self on both moons, has probably subconsciously absorbed hints from both sources, making him one of the most in-the-know players for the trolls’ session, despite knowing little about how the game actually works. True, a portion of his knowledge comes from resident Time player Aradia, but I think his gold-blooded “psiioniic” abilities help him out in this regard. Good thing, too, or this game never would have gotten off the ground (and for him, it almost doesn’t)!
Note
I just wanna tell you how much I love your writing, and that you have inspred me to write in a format like the Lost Ones, and would love to post it to tumblr but not sure if people would like my writing.
Ps: I am at 2082 words with only two characters done
I’m glad I could inspire someone! I always want to be able to let people feel safe they can do something and feel happy doing it. It doesn’t matter if someone likes it though as long as you do. If you’re happy, that’s all the really matters.
Bruh my lost ones chapters always wind up with 25 to 26 pages in word. It’s goign to be longer with Fundy now and even longer when I add more people.
Thanks for tagging me, @oneawkwardcookie ❤️
What is your name? I go by Dee.
What are your fandoms? Too many to name! But if we’re talking about just the ones I’ve written for then Suits, Teen Wolf, 9-1-1, Sherlock, Lewis, Hawaii 5-0, Law and Order: SVU, Downton Abbey and that one single, solitary Supernatural fic I wrote for a challenge. I do have a couple of WIPs for other fandoms on the go, but as I haven’t posted them yet I will refrain from naming them.
Where do you post your fanfiction? Tumblr and AO3.
Going by kudos, what is your most popular one-shot? Something to Talk About (Buddie, 6141 words).
Going by kudos, what is your most popular multi-chapter? I don’t really do multi-chapter fics (in my own writing, I mean. I do read other people’s, though), but I guess two chapters counts as a multi-chapter fic so my most popular one by kudos would be Paging Dr. Freud (Marvey, 7147 words).
What is your personal favourite story, out of your current content? I honestly don’t know. It’s probably one of the WIPs I haven’t got around to finishing yet!
What work were you most nervous to post? I don’t really get too nervous about posting, but I was, naturally enough, a bit nervous posting my very first one, Someone to Watch Over Me (Marvey, 12053 words).
Is there a method to how you title your work? Not really. Sometimes they come to me really easily (maybe even before the fics sometimes! There has definitely been times I wrote a fic purely because an idea for a title popped into my head and I just had to write something around it.), sometimes they come to me as I’m writing the fic, and sometimes I really struggle to come up with one. I’ve seen me take longer to title a fic than it actually took me to write the story!
Do you outline your works or just wing it? I’m definitely more of a pantser than a plotter. I get an idea for a story and I just start writing! Of course, this has often led me to run out of steam as I near the end and realize I don’t actually have an ending! Or, well, I suppose it would be more accurate to say I know generally how I want it to end but I don’t know how to get to the ending. That’s honestly the reason I have the amount of WIPs I have right now, all sitting half finished in my docs. There’s a couple that are so close to making it over the finish line if I could only settle enough to focus on how to write their endings.
Are you excited about any of your upcoming works? I have a couple of Sterek ficlets (probably both going to be around 1k) on the go that I’m really enjoying writing and hopefully they will be enjoyable for others to read, but either way I’ve quite like what I’ve written so far and hopefully I’ll be pleased with the finished product even if no one else is!
What are your AO3 statistics?
3/6/2020 Chicago
I got to hang out with a whole bunch of awesome people before this show, both people I knew and ones I just met that day.  It almost made it worth the freezing temperatures to meet them all.  Once we got in to the much warmer venue, I got a spot to the left of the keyboard, with folks to talk to on both sides.
Fresh outdid himself in the fashion department at this show. As he was setting up, he proudly displayed jagged-striped pink-and-green neon socks, a yellow sweatshirt with Simba printed all over it, and a headband with a print I didn’t catch all the details of, but included the word “Krap!” and bull horns.
Note: I am shortening the recap for the first set, since it was a copy of the one from the night before, except that they didn’t play the forward version of Sapphire Bullets.  This show didn’t have much banter in the first set regardless, but I’ll share what there was.  The second  set recap will be the regular length
During the first block of songs, Dan had to switch to his backup electric briefly, which sounded louder than the other, but switched back by the next song.  Danny had a band-aid with him when they went onstage.  He unwrapped it and put it on his thumb during the first few songs, then spent the rest of the set rewrapping it as it kept peeling off.
After the first block of songs, Flans asked Linnell how it was going.  Linnell told him to hold on because “I have to check.”  After a pause, he decided “I think it’s going pretty good.”
Flans  said he had a good day and that he had taken an afternoon nap.  He had also worked on some of the songs he had messed up the day before because “There is no off-switch on this okay button.”
Linnell replied that “Buttons with switches on them are tricky,” and then changed the subject, introducing us all to his new keyboard stand. “I did get a new keyboard stand and I can’t stop talking about it.”
Flans told him that talking a lot about the keyboard stand was okay because of “how much you have to listen to us talk about guitar amps.”
Linnell gave us some more details on the keyboard stand. According to him, the stand has wells in the front because it is based on his old keyboard stand, which was designed by Brian Dewan “who’s greatest wish was to design a school desk.”  “I keep my math homework over there, and over here I carved the Aerosmith logo”  He then told us that the new stand has a drawer, which the old one didn’t.  Linnell wanted to open the drawer to show us, but it wasn’t facing anyone, so he told Flans that they should post a video of what it looks like online.
When Linnell brought up that Minimum Wage has a whip crack in it on the album, he suggested that the audience could do it here. Flans replied that the audience would have to, since they didn’t finish sound production on the song.
Before Stilloob, Flans called it the “Playing a Song From Flood Backwards Challenge.”  While  explaining what they would do, he told us that for this part of the show “I don’t want to say there is no audience enjoyment, but the amount of audience enjoyment is finite.”  At the next stopping point after the song Flans announced “We are challenging all other They Might Be Giants like bands.  WE KNOW who they are,” to complete the ‘challenge’.  During the next song, Lucky Ball and Chain, Flans pulled what I presume was the lyric sheet for Stilloob off of his stand, crumpled it up, and threw it upstage behind Curt’s riser.
Flans told the balcony that they couldn’t rock out too much, and that the venue last night had been “like playing in a coliseum.”
Later, Flans decided the show was going too fast, and he had to slow it down.  He told us to get out our phones, demanding “What are you? At work?” when we were slow to do so.  Then he had the whole band come up to pose for photos.  We were told to post the photos and tag them @hodgeman.  I wonder if any confused fans actually did.
In between sets, Fresh had to fight with a lady standing a few people to my left, who kept putting her jacket and purse on the carpet for Marty’s electronic drum kit, even after he had asked her to remove them.  Saul, making sure the lights for the Quiet Storm were adjusted properly, bent his legs while checking at Linnell’s mic so that he could check how the lights were at Linnell’s height, which was a hilarious necessity I hadn’t considered before.
When the intro music for the second set began, Flans stuck onstage by going around behind the risers for some reason.  Once he made it to his mic with his guitar, I realised he didn’t have his glasses on.
Once again, 2082 was the first song of the set, despite the setlist, which had 2018 written instead.  Linnell’s mic was off for the first line and a half of the song, so it was a strange start, although the rest of the song was unaffected by it.
Because I was right by the electronic drum kit, the whole Quiet Storm was a bit strange, as the actual sound of the mallets hitting sounded as clear as the electronic sounds those hits generated.  It was a bit disorienting at first!  I also could see little pieces of fluff falling off of the mallets and floating away as he played.
After 2082, they played Music Jail, which once again blew me away.  I realized that a big part of its ability to be so rocking was that the electronic drums allowed Marty to take over a larger part of the song.
Once Music Jail was finished, John Brunette slipped onstage to give Flans his glasses.  Flans stepped back to grab them and even way off mic, it was easy to hear his cry of “Oh, thank god”  Stepping quickly back to the mic and placing his glasses on his face, he introduced Linnell as on on the keyboards for the next song.
“Nothing makes our short, unsatisfying unplugged set better than electronic drums and a keyboard,” he announced.
 “It’s acoustic!”  Linnell promised us, “Except for the drums and the keyboard.”
Moving on, Flans introduced the next song. “This song is about what makes New England so special, which might not mean much here.”  This led, of course, into Wicked Little Critta, and then they all left us with the Underwater Woman Video once again while the crew cleaned up.
As the song was finishing, they all returned to the stage.  Linnell, watching the video as he came on, mouthed along to a few of the words, basically singing along to himself.
Rather than start back into the music right away, Flans came up to the mic and told us all “We talk a lot about healthcare in the band. Now it's time to talk about some music.”  He told us the next song was off of My Murdered Remains “a name no one in our management was happy with” and mentioned that it was not available for streaming.
Linnell chimed in to say that this was a new strategy, calling it an ‘inreach’ program instead of outreach.  “If you think you can help,” Flans said to the crowd “We’re okay!” Then they started into The Communists Have the Music.
From there, they played Wearing a Raincoat, and then Damn Good Times, which was their first deviation from the setlist of the night before!  I had honestly grown a bit tired of this song in 2018, but clearly all I had needed was some time away, because I was overjoyed to hear it again!  Dan was, of course, particularly amazing during this song, and especially smiley during the remainder of the set.
They paused only briefly after DGT to announce that the next song was about a near eastern rock band, then played The Mesopotamians, followed immediately by Spy.  Linnell had a different sample this time around, a woman singing “very-very” which I couldn’t place, and he also yelled high and low opposite the band playing.  Flans had a bit more luck directing the crowd than he did in Milwaukee, and also engaged in playing his guitar while pressing his mic stand to the strings.
They played Ana Ng, which is always fun live, and then Let Me Tell You About My Operation, with Flans calling out “Paging Doctor Beller!” before that absolutely epic drum part in the instrumental part of the song.
After that run of songs, everyone on stage looked a bit breathless.  Linnell must have been feeling it, since he decided they needed to “take this high energy and slow it down by talking about something boring.”
Flans agreed with him and said that the show was going by too fast. “It’s like it’s still the first set. It’s like we still care!”
Linnell, who had just taken a sip from his coffee cup, mentioned that his new keyboard stand had no drink holder but “I guess school desks don’t have drink holders”
“You do have a rearview mirror,” Flans pointed out.
“I do!”  He turned it around briefly so that we all could see.  “It’s so Marty can keep an eye on me.  So he can see if I’m making faces.”
“Marty has ways of keeping an eye on everybody,” Flans added. “Now that it’s the third act of Behind the Music all the secrets everyone already knew can come out.”
Linnell started to respond, then broke off  “Danny is pressuring me to start the song, isn’t he?”  Danny was waiting attentively, but patiently behind the keyboard.  When Linnell asked about him, I looked over and he met my eyes.  I smiled at him, and shook my head.  He wasn’t pressuring Linnell at all!  He smiled back at me, and walked over to stand in front of Marty’s riser.  Linnell, meanwhile, had turned to look for Danny asking  “Where is he?”  Finding Danny’s new spot, Linnell told him “Okay Danny, we can start the song.”
This led into Museum of Idiots.  Danny does seem to get a bit nervous about starting this song, which makes sense because it’s him all by himself for the first few measures.  I also think that the Johns tend to intentionally go off on tangents before this song just to tease him about it, but that’s only speculation.
Istanbul was very similar to the previous night (which means it was great).  I realized that Dan is playing both his acoustic and his electric guitar during the course of this song, which is awesome!
They finished out the set with Theme from Flood, but were back on soon for their first encore.  This started out with New York City.  Most of the time, their live version of this song starts off with an almost lullaby-esque quality to the first verse, before being kicked up into a super high-energy song from the second verse onward.  During  this performance though, that transition never happened, meaning that the whole song was performed in that softer tone, with Flans sweetly singing and the gentle xylophone tones on Linnell’s keyboard.  It was absolutely beautiful, but perhaps not entirely intentional.  I saw some of the guys exchanging ‘wtf’ looks during and after the song, and as soon as the song was over, Linnell told us all he was a bit confused.
They played Doctor Worm next, with Linnell changing the settings on the keyboard for Dan once again. Once it was over, as they were leaving the stage again, Marty smacked his head straight into a mic as he was walking offstage.  I guess he wasn’t looking where he was going, but he shook it off and seemed fine.
The second encore started with She’s An Angel, the version that starts with just Linnell singing so wonderfully.  They finished out their evening by playing The Guitar, with Curt and Linnell giving us the Future of Sound.  During FoS Marty, who was keeping time on his kick drum, had his hands above his head, and was moving them slightly as if he might clap, then jerking them back apart, which was beautifully bizarre.  Finishing the Guitar, Flans thanked us all for coming out and they left the stage for the night.
After the show, Marty and Danny were back on to give things out, Danny with a huge pile of stickers that he began passing out right away.  After a few moments, he broke off to give out setlists.  After giving one to me, he said “Goodnight, sweetie,” and touched my shoulder.  I left the venue feeling lighter than air.
