PADRÃO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS (MONUMENT TO THE DISCOVERIES)
The Monument to the Discoveries was first erected in 1940, as a temporary structure integrated into the Portuguese World Exhibition. Built with perishable materials, it had a lightweight structure of iron and cement, with the sculptural composition molded in “estafe” (a mixture of various kinds of plaster and tow, consolidated by a wooden or iron framework). In 1960, on the occasion of the 500th…

MONUMENT TO THE DISCOVERIES, LISBON, PORTUGAL (October 26, 2017) Our city tour of Lisbon took first to Padrão dos Descobrimentos or the Monument to the Discoveries, which celebrates the Portuguese Age of Exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries. Situated along the river where ships departed to trade with India and the Orient, the monument represents a small sailing ship constructed by the Portuguese to explore the Atlantic Ocean. Leading the vessel is Prince Henry the Navigator, and behind him are other great Portuguese voyagers. At the foot of the monument is a magnificent marble mosaic of a compass with a world map in its center. I immediately located the Philippines in the map; after all, we were discovered by Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. Next stop, the BELEM TOWER.

DISCOVERIES MONUMENT
Tumblr media
Padrão dos Descobrimentos ( Monument of the Discoveries) is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém, Lisbon. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and the Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries. The Monument was made for the commemorations to celebrate the fifth centennial of the death of Infante Henry the Navigator, son of King João I and Queen Philippa of Lancaster, and the brain behind the Discoveries, being his figure the main Statue on top of the Monument.
Tumblr media
Architecture
The structure is located on the northern bank of the Tagus River, limited by the Belém Marina, Algés and Dafundo Nautical Centre and the Museum of Popular Art ( Museu de Arte Popular), and demarcated by stone pedestals with armillary spheres. Opposite the large square, and across the Avenida da Índia-Avenida de Brasília motorway, is the Praça do Império (Empire Square) which fronts the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Cultural Center and the green-spaces of the Jardim Vasco da Gama.
The original structure, which Telmo, Barros and Almeida created, was erected in steel and cement, while the 33 statues were produced in a composite of plaster and tow. Ostensibly a 52-metre-high (171 ft) slab standing vertically along the bank of the Tagus, the design takes the form of the prow of a caravel (ship used in the early Portuguese exploration). On either side of the slab are ramps that join at the river's edge, with the figure of Henry the Navigator on its edge. On either side of the Infante, along the ramp, are 16 figures (33 in total) representing figures from the Portuguese Age of Discovery. These great people of the era included monarchs, explorers, cartographers, artists, scientists and missionaries. Each idealized figure is designed to show movement towards the front (the unknown sea), projecting a direct or indirect synthesis of their participation in the events after Henry.
The South African government was responsible for gifting the construction of the square in front of the monument: the 50-metre-diameter (160 ft) Rosa-dos-Ventos (compass rose) was executed using different types of limestone, including lioz, a rare type of beige limestone found only around Lisbon, more specifically in Sintra. Designed by the architect Cristino da Silva, it includes a Mappa mundi that is 14 metres wide, showing the routes of Portuguese carracks and caravels during the Age of Discovery.
Tumblr media
On the northern façade flanking the staircase are two inscriptions in metal: on the left, "AO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE E AOS PORTVGVESES QVE DESCOBRIRAM OS CAMINHOS DO MAR" (To Prince Henry and the Portuguese that Discovered the Roads of the Sea) over a metal anchor; and, on the right, the words "NO V CENTENÁRIO DO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE 1460 – 1960" (On the Fifth centenary of Prince Henry 1460–1960), over a crown of laurel. The double staircase ascends one level, before the entranceway to the monument, allowing a perspective on the square and the lateral figures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The interior consists of three areas: the auditorium with space for 101 people, a stage of 18 square metres (190 sq ft), with film projection booth; a secondary level with two halls for exhibition; and the last level with four rooms. Normally, the auditorium hosts a multimedia exhibition on the history of Lisbon, while the other rooms are used for exhibitions. The top of the monument (reached via a lift or stairs) offers views of the Tagus river, the Belém neighbourhood and its many attractions, including the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, which date from the Age of Discovery.
Statues
In addition to the main statue of Henry the Navigator, holding a model of a carrack, on either side of the ramps of the monument are a total of 33 figures from the history of the Discoveries, specifically (from left to right):

Tumblr media
The monument was featured in Lisa Stansfield's music video for the single "Change," where she is seen walking up and down the eastern ledge. It was also featured on the 23rd season of the American reality competition series The Amazing Race, where the mappa mundi was used as part of a challenge where contestants had to measure the route that Ferdinand Magellan sailed across the world.

March 16, 2020: Our last day in Portugal.
Our trip to Portugal was winding down and after days of passing tuk tuk tours, we decided why not, let’s give it a try! While walking back through Praça do Comercio, we stopped to talk to a lady who was trying to get us to take a tour. While giving us the price rundown and what it included, we asked if we could combine a stop in Lisbon with the tour to Belém. She quickly agreed so away we went!
Before heading to Belém we stopped by the Elevador da Bica. It was a super touristy spot but it was one I wanted to check off the list. After snapping a few photos, we headed back to the tuk tuk and off to Belém we went!
First stop: Pasteis de Belém! Our tuk tuk driver skipped the line and got us some yummy traditional Portuguese tarts. We had some a few nights before but they weren’t quite as good as these. This bakery has been hand making these tarts using the same recipe since 1837!
Onward to Mosteiro dos Jeronimos! We couldn’t go in due to Covid but we were able to take in the beautiful exterior.
Next, we arrived at Belém Tower, the main attraction. Built between 1514 and 1519, the tower is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and was once used as a defense system. The tide was out when we visited so you could scramble across the rocky ground and get a cool side view!
Two stops left: Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to Maritime Explorers) and MAAT, a museum with a beautiful, modern facade.
I hate that I don’t remember our drivers name! She was so nice and patient with us! But I do remember she had recently relocated to Lisbon from Brazil. We needed to find an ATM so she helped up find one and took us back to Alfama, the neighborhood where we stayed. It was a really pleasant experience, as our whole trip had been! There are certainly cheaper ways to visit Belém but the tuk tuk experience is neat and you get dropped at each attraction’s doorstep.
When you’re in Lisbon, hop in a tuk tuk and spend 1/2 - 1 day in Belém.
...
Things I’ve already learned from more blogging:
-Take pictures of the small things - the delicious bite size tarts
-Take pictures of the bigger things - our tuk tuck driver and the tuk tuk itself
-Stick to a plan - I planned on going to Belém since I started trip planning. For some reason, I mentioned to my friends that Belém wasn’t really worth a visit. I was probably tired so it seemed like too much work. But thankfully we came across our awesome driver and took the tour. It warrants at least 1/2 a day.

Lisbon
The capital of Portugal, and westernmost city in Europe, Lisbon is a gem but sadly not an unknown one anymore. In the middle of summer it was heaving with tourists, but there were plenty of places you could escape the crowds, if not the hills!
To start with a couple of places that weren’t that busy, despite being the best museums that I visited in the city, both helped by being a fair distance…

‘The world is in our hands’ by Angshu // Monument to the Discoveries or Padrao dos Descobrimentos was erected in 1960 on the north bank of the Tagus River. This monument was built in order to honor the Portuguese’s Discoveries. In fact, the courage and bravery of the Portuguese navigators crossed the world and discovered new lands. On each side of this monument, there are heroes of the Portuguese Discoveries and the figure of Infante D. Henriques (Henry the Navigator) is on the edge of the caravel. He was the most important person of the Discoveries, and it seems he is still leading these Portuguese legends through the sea. This monument also includes heroes like Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões, author of “The Lusiadas”, Pedro Álvares Cabral, who discovered Brazil, Gil Eanes, who was the first hero sailing beyond Cape Bojador, Bartolomeu Dias, the first person who crossed the Cape of Good Hope, and many other navigators, painters, mathematicians, cartographers, kings...

MUFONin tapaus 87343.
