Tumblr media
Cheap/Free resources:
Wkipedia:

From Archive.Org (maybe scholarly and/or illustrative. In case illustrations are not there, simply Google them for reference):

Folk art:
Folk art is an entirely different area that deserve a post of its own. But i love them so here is a long list by Memeraki.com. You can Google each and then look more into what you like. This website also offers very cheap courses in traditional Indian arts by the hidden and disenfranchised masters themselves! It's doing a great work in giving them a platorm. I myself have taken the Mughal Miniature course here. You can consider it.
Illustrated Books:
Note: These are coffee table books with beautiful illustrations that you'd love to looks at.
The Night Life of Trees: In the belief of the Gond tribe, the lives of humans and trees are closely entwined. Indian Painting: The Lesser Known Traditions: India has an astonishingly rich variety of painting traditions. While miniature painting schools became virtually extinct with the decline of aristocratic patronage, a number of local vernacular idioms still survive and continue to develop.
Madhubani Art: Indian Art Series: Madhubani art's origin is believed to go back to the ancient era of the Ramayana, when the town was decorated by inhabitants of the region for the wedding of Lord Rama and Sita with elaborate wall paintings and murals (...) Primarily a significant socio-cultural engagement for the womenfolk of Bihar, this art was a welcome break from their daily drudgery.
Reflections on Mughal Art and Culture: Enter the splendid world of Mughal India and explore its rich aesthetic and cultural legacy through fresh insights offered by 13 eminent scholars.
Monsoon Feelings: A History of Emotions in the Rain: Through a series of evocative essays exploring rain-drenched worlds of poetry, songs, paintings, architecture, films, gardens, festivals, music and medicine, this lavishly illustrated collection examines the history of monsoon feelings in South Asia from the twelfth century to the present
Sita's Ramayana shifts the point of view of the Ramayana - the saga of a heroic war - to bring a woman's perspective to this timeless epic. Illustrated with Patua painting.
Adi Parva: Churning of the Ocean: a graphic novel that is a revisionist retelling of some of our oldest tales which have inspired and guided generations of people.
Ajit Mookerji, Sivaramamurti and Craven Roy's books are concise from where one can begin and then delve deeper into the subject of interest. Reading history and myths behind the work for context and listening to music from the given time/region alongside will make the exploration even more enjoyable!

Why didn't Krishna save Draupadi from Chir-Haran?
Glories to Śrī Krishna..
He did! When Devī Draupadī called out the names of lord, the Bhakta-vatsala, Śrī Krishna actually saved her. Śri Nīlakaṇṭha writes in his Bhāṣya (commentary) on Śrimad Vyāsa Mahābhārat 2.90.42–51 (Kumbakonam) as thus:
ākrṣyamāṇe vasane draupadyā cintito hariḥ | govinda dvārakāvāsin kṛṣṇa gopījanapriya || kauravaiḥ paribhūtāṁ māṁ kiṁ na jānāsi keśava | he nātha he ramānātha vrajanāthārtināśana | kauravārṇavamagnāṁ mām uddharasva janārdana || kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa mahāyogin viśvātman viśvabhāvana | prapannāṁ pāhi govinda kurumadhye ’vasīdatīm || yājñasenyā vacaḥ śrutvā kṛṣṇo gahvarito’bhavat | tyaktvā śayyāsanaṁ padbhyāṁ kṛpāluḥ kṛpayābhyagāt ||
~ When her clothes were being dragged off, Devī Draupadī thought about Hari. “O Govinda! Resident of Dvārakā! O Krishna beloved of the Gopī.-s” Don’t you know that I have been abused by the Kauravas, O Keśava! O Svāmī! O Rāmapati! Lord of Vraja! One who removes suffering! Rescue me as I am sunk in the ocean of the Kauravas, Janārdana! O Anataryamin of all! Creator of the world! Protect [me] who has taken refuge [in you], Govinda, suffering in the midst of the Kurus.…Having heard Yajñasenī’s words, Śrī Krishna became absorbed. He left his throne [and] with compassion, the merciful one arrived on foot. Thus, when Devī Draupadī’s garment was being tugged away, another similar garment appeared every time.
And Viṣṇupāda Madhvācārya in Śri Mahābhārat Tātparya Nirṇaya 21.355 (Variation: 21.347) write as thus (confirming that Śrī Krishna helped her):
vikṛṣyamāṇe vasane tu kṛṣṇā sasmāra kṛṣṇaṃ suviśeṣato'pi। tadā'nyadāsīd vasanaṃ ca tasyā divyaṃ susūkṣmaṃ kanakāvadātam॥
~ When Dushasana started pulling her cloth, Devī Draupadī started remembering Śrī Krishna through her prayer. At that time, a second cloth, that was divine, fine and shining like gold, appeared there.
Also, many great Ālvārs mentioned this in their hymns; Śrī Thirumangai Ālvār (8th century) writes in his Śrī Virperu Vizhavum (Verse 6) as thus:
andanan ṣiruvan araṣart am araṣarku ilaiyavan aṇiyizhaiyai ṣenru endamakku urimai ṣei ena tariyādu emberumān arul enna | ṣandam al kuzhalāl alakkaṇ nūṭṭruvar tam peṇḍirum eidi nūlizhappa indiran ṣiruvan ter mun ninrānai tiruvallikkeṇi kaṇḍene॥
~ The blind king Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son, Duryodhana, and his younger brother Duḥśāsana went to the beautiful Devī Draupadī and said, ‘Serve me’ while saying they started (pulling clothes); Unable to bear this, the dark one prayed, ‘O Lord, save me!’, when Lo! The lord took her grief and gave it to the Kuruş, and the marriage thread of widows was broken. He drove Indra-born-Arjuna’s chariot. I have seen Him in Tiruvallikkeni. I salute him thus!
All majors Commentators on Śrimad Vyāsa Mahābhārat comments on this passage and glorifies Śrī Krishna. Even we have numerous of cross reference for the event from the works of Āchārya-s and Śrimad Vyāsa Mahābhārat itself!
Ending with words of, Paṇḍita Śrīnivāsachariar who wrote a condensed Bhāṣya to Śrimad Vyāsa Mahābhārat (as translated by Padma Bhūṣaṇa awardee Śrīman V. Rāghavan):
mahatyāpadi saṃprāpte smartavyo bhagavān hariḥ। iti niścitya manasā śaraṇāgatavatsalam । ākṛṣyamāṇe vasane draupadī kṛṣṇamasmarat ॥
~ ‘ When great calamity befalls, Śri Hari must be thought of.’ So deciding in mind, Devī Draupadī, while her cloth was being pulled off, thought of Śrī Krishna who is affectionate to those who seek him as refuge.
ityanusmṛtya kṛṣṇaṃ sā hariṃ tribhuvaneśvaram । prārudaduḥkhitā [rājan] mukhamācchādya bhāminī ॥
~ Having thus contemplated upon Śrī Krishna, Śrī Hari, the Lord of the three worlds, that beautiful lady, covering her face, cried in her distress.
tasya prasādād draupadyāḥ kṛṣyamāṇe'mbare tadā। tadrapamaparaṃ vastraṃ prādurāsīdanekaśaḥ॥
~ By His grace, there appeared at that time when Devī Draupadī’s garment was being pulled off, a similar garment many times over.
tadadbhutatamaṃ loke vīkṣya sarve mahībhṛtaḥ । śaśaṃsudraupadīṃ tatra kutsanto dhṛtarāṣṭrajam ॥
~ Seeing that greatest wonder of the world, all the kings extolled Devī Draupadī and condemned Duryodhana and Karna.
