"Tell me, Otto, How has your week been?" Strickler began to use a very specific, practiced tone. A venom-honey voice that only well-spoken tyrants could pull off.

"Let me tell you about mine."

He grabbed a beautiful, pink-petaled Kalanchoe, tossing it into the air and catching it.

"On Sunday, A goblin ate the last book I'd managed to keep hidden from Dictatious. That new best-seller, you know? The one with the car chase? I was four chapters away from finishing it. "

He lifted the pot over his head, then slam-dunked it against the porch.

"On Monday, Gunmar demanded I butcher a Nylarlagroth. Did you know their chitin is twelve inches thick? Nearly impossible to carve; so you have to crawl inside them and start from there. On Tuesday I spent twelve hours in the Crucible. Our Dark Underlord calls it sparring, but really, it's just an excuse to watch me fight for my life against a pack of rabid Helheetis. I supposed I made a good show of it, because on Wednesday, I was confined to quarters to recover. Mind you, A Gumm-Gumm's idea of medical attention is to lick an injury until the bleeding stops. "

A massive Hen and Chicks plant exploded against the pavement.

"I've had no proper food, no indoor plumping, and no freedom. I make these sacrifices because I want to help my half-breed brethern. That is my burden to bear. The only thing I ask the Janus Order to do in return is keep tabs on five measly changelings while I'm away!"

Strickler's eyes were burning now, and he turned his attention to an elegant jade plant. He grabbed the terra-cotta flowerpot and began to press his palms together.

"Nien! Not that one!"

((One of my favorite scenes! I'd love to hear the commentary!))

I wanted to introduce Otto and Eloise, who was abook exclusive character. I also wanted to draw attention to their humanity. We're given very little about Otto, except that he is friendly, ruthless, and enjoys playing the Sadist. I think he enjoys the heckling aspect of threatening others with death more than the actual pain they'll suffer, but I digress. I wanted to give him a hobby as distinctive as Nomura's pottery or Strickler's ships in a bottle ((From a deleted Trollhunters scene)) and the idea of him having a green thumb amused me, especially when I remembered that there's a plant known as the Friendship Plant that will make an appearance later.

Also, it was really hard for me to think of things Strickler and Gunmar would do together at this point in their relationship. Teaching Strickler how to butcher a nyarlagroth would seem like humilating torture for Strickler, and a good survival lesson to Gunmar. And yes, maybe humble him a little from how openly he glares.

The sparring is Gunmar genuinely trying to connect and just being awful at it.

you slipped your phone into your pocket and made your way to the library. heading up to the second floor, where you and your friends usually hung out, you spotted xinyu and nien who were talking at a table.

"how's the studying going, nien?" you asked, walking up to them.

nien glanced at you, "funny story—xinyu distracted me."

xinyu gasped dramatically. "i did no such thing! you were the one who said you needed a break!"

"and you were supposed to tell me to get back to studying," nien shot back.

"i literally did, and you told me you already knew everything!" xinyu argued.

"okay, you're right. but still," nien conceded, shaking her head.

"you really ditched me in lecture just to hang out with xinyu?" you asked.

"i was trying to study, but then i was given an opportunity to yap," nien defended herself.

"just say you hate me," you said, rolling your eyes.

"if i hated you, i wouldn't have suggested malatang today," nien retorted.

"xinyu invited me," you pointed out.

"i did it first!" nien shot back.

"but only xinyu texted me,"

xinyu grinned. "seems like it was my idea."

"i'm gonna fight both of you," nien rolled her eyes.

"too tired for that," you mumbled, dropping your bag onto a chair. you slid into the chair next to xinyu and leaned on her shoulder without a second thought. xinyu responded by casually wrapping her arm around you.

"aww, my favorite couple," nien teased with a grin.

"just finish your studying," you mumbled, hiding your face in xinyu's shoulder.

"yeah, i'm ready to eat," xinyu added.

"so, why were u even in the library in the first place?" you asked her, lifting your head slightly.

"i was gonna do some assignments," xinyu said as if that was obvious.

"and why aren't you doing them?" you questioned.

"well... i can't move with you here." xinyu pulled you closer as you started to move away. "but this is so much better."

"when are they due?" you asked suspiciously.

"tomorrow," she answered casually.

you shot her a look. "do your assignments, xinyu."

"i will. tomorrow," she repeated with a shrug.

"you better," you warned.

you hung out while nien wrapped up her studying. as time passed, your long day started to catch up to you, and you found yourself resting your head on the table, with xinyu leaning on top of you.

finally, after what felt like ages, nien slammed her laptop shut, startling both you and xinyu.

"i'm done!" nien declared, maybe a little too loudly, drawing a few stares.

"thank god! let's get out of here," xinyu said, quickly standing up.

"if i had stayed any longer, i would've actually passed out," you added, stretching as you stood.

you and xinyu stood around as nien packed up her things, and soon enough, the three of you headed out together. naturally, you claimed the front seat in xinyu's car as her certified passenger princess while she drove you all to the hot pot spot near campus.

finally, after what felt like ages, nien slammed her laptop shut, startling both you and xinyu.

"i'm done!" nien declared, maybe a little too loudly, drawing a few stares.

"thank god! let's get out of here," xinyu said, quickly standing up.

"if i had stayed any longer, i would've actually passed out," you added, stretching as you stood.

after a short drive filled with random chatter and music blasting from xinyu's playlist, you all arrived at the hot pot spot near campus. the familiar scent of spices hit you as soon as you stepped inside, instantly making your stomach rumble.

you found a cozy table in the back, tucked away from the busier part of the restaurant. as usual, nien reached for the menu, but xinyu snatched it out of her hands with a smug grin.

"we all know what we're getting," xinyu declared confidently, not even glancing at the menu.

"speak for urself!" nien said, trying to grab it back. "what if i wanna try something different this time?"

"lies," you teased, nudging nien. "you get the same thing every single time."

nien huffed, pretending to be offended. "maybe i've evolved since the last time we came here."

"sure, sure," xinyu waved her off, flagging down a server to place the order.

as the server approached, xinyu rattled off the usuals—no hesitation. nien eventually gave up on pretending and just nodded along with the order.

with that out of the way, xinyu leaned back in her chair, stretching lazily. nien was already on her phone, probably catching up on everything she missed while pretending to study.

"so, how's life?" xinyu asked, looking between nien and you, though you knew she already knew the answer when it came to you.

nien shrugged, still staring at her phone. "same old, same old. stress, assignments, exhaustion."

you nodded in agreement. "yeah, same. just counting down the days until we can have an actual break."

"what're you doing during the break?" xinyu asked, her eyes flicking to you with a subtle curiosity.

"probably just chilling at home, seeing my family, hanging out with friends if i have time," you answered.

xinyu perked up slightly. "so... remember how i told you my mom misses you? she invited you over. you should come to mine for a bit."

you raised an eyebrow. "all the way back to yours?"

"yes," xinyu replied with a dead-serious expression.

you chuckled, "i'll think about it."

"you should just go to everyone's house for the break," nien chimed in, finally putting her phone down. "get compensation for all the times you paid for us and let us stay over."

"facts," you said, turning to nien. "finally get some payback."

"well, my house is always open," nien said with a playful grin.

"yeah, but i'd have to book so many flights," you groaned.

"true," nien nodded, "but it's free food and housing."

xinyu leaned forward, resting her arms on the table. "you can only sleep in my bed, though."

you shot her a smile. "obviously."

xinyu nodded, looking determined. "we'll figure it all out."

just then, the server returned with steaming bowls of malatang and sides, and all conversation came to a halt as the smell of the food took over. you didn't even wait for a second—chopsticks in hand, you all dug in immediately.

"ahhh, so good," nien sighed, eyes closed after her first bite.

"i've missed this," you agreed, savoring the familiar spicy, numbing flavors.

xinyu nodded, already halfway through her bowl. "this was definitely the move for today."

for a while, the table fell into comfortable silence, everyone too focused on their food to talk. eventually, though, nien glanced up, a sly grin creeping across her face.

"i still can't believe you two are actually dating now. feels unreal."

you rolled your eyes, but couldn't help smiling. "yeah, all it took was a terrible situation to get us back together."

"don't say it like that!" xinyu protested. "i would've talked to you again... eventually."

you raised an eyebrow. "no need to lie, this is a safe space."

xinyu chuckled, looking a little sheepish. "okay, maybe not. but we're together now, so that's what matters."

nien, still grinning, chimed in, "the only couple i'm willing to third wheel for."

xinyu shot you a teasing look but said nothing more, letting the conversation flow to lighter topics—trip planning, classes, and all the random stuff going on in your lives.

when you were all finished, xinyu insisted on paying, despite your and nien's protests, before you headed back to the car.

"i'll drop you both off," xinyu said, settling into the driver's seat.

as the car hummed to life, soft music filled the background, and you leaned back in your seat.

"i'm glad we did this," you murmured, more to yourself than anyone.

"me too," xinyu agreed, glancing over at you for a moment before focusing back on the road.

nien, sitting in the back and already scrolling through her phone again, hummed in agreement. "free food, good company, zero complaints."

xinyu dropped nien off first, and then she drove you back to your place. as you got out of the car, you gave her a tired but grateful smile.

"thanks for today," you said, leaning into the open window.

"anytime," xinyu replied with a soft smile, her eyes lingering on yours for a moment longer than usual. "so... should i park, or do you wanna be alone for the night?"

you tilted your head, a smirk playing on your lips. "i mean, if you wanna hang out, i wouldn't complain."

xinyu chuckled softly, her fingers drumming against the steering wheel. "i guess that's my cue to park then."

you grinned as she pulled into a spot. moments later, she joined you at the entrance, and the two of you made your way inside. the familiar warmth of your place felt even cozier with xinyu there beside you. you kicked off your shoes at the door, collapsing onto the couch with a dramatic sigh.

xinyu followed, plopping down beside you, her arm naturally draping across the back of the couch as she leaned into the cushions. you glanced over at her, your eyes catching hers in the dim light of the room.

"so," xinyu said, her voice softer now, "wanna watch something, or just vibe here for a bit?"

"we can chill here," you said, turning to face her more fully. "i'm way too full to do anything else right now."

"same." xinyu laughed quietly, shifting closer until her knee brushed yours. the familiar closeness, it felt natural.

you laid back, resting your head against her shoulder without hesitation. xinyu didn't seem to mind, wrapping her arm around you comfortably. the steady rise and fall of her breathing made you feel even more at ease.

a few minutes of peaceful silence passed before xinyu spoke again, her voice barely above a whisper.

"i'm glad we can do this," she said, her tone more serious now.

you smiled, not moving from your spot. "yeah. me too. feels like we picked up right where we left off."

xinyu nodded, her thumb gently tracing circles on your arm. "i know i say this a lot but i really did miss this. i missed you."

her words hung in the air for a moment, and you felt a warm flutter in your chest. you lifted your head slightly to meet her gaze, your eyes searching hers for a moment before you spoke.

"i missed you too. more than i realized."

there was a softness in xinyu's expression, something unspoken passing between you two. she leaned in ever so slightly, her forehead resting against yours for a brief second. the closeness made your heart race but in the best way possible.

"what're you doing?" you whispered.

xinyu smirked. "what do you think i'm doing?"

you laughed softly, the tension between you dissolving into something lighter, more familiar. "nothing, i was just caught off guard by how close you were."

xinyu pulled back a little, "oh sorry"

even with that awkward moment you two just sat there, for a while, enjoying the comfort of each other's company. you felt like you could stay there forever, just you and xinyu, with nothing else mattering.

eventually, as the night grew later, you found yourself dozing off, your head still resting against her shoulder. xinyu shifted slightly, her fingers brushing against your hair as she whispered, "you should go to bed. you shouldn't fall asleep on the couch like this."

you mumbled something incoherent, too tired to argue, and xinyu let out a soft laugh. gently, she helped you up, guiding you to your room. once you were settled under the covers, she stood by the door, watching you with that same soft smile from earlier.

"goodnight," xinyu said quietly.

"stay," you muttered, half-asleep but still aware enough to know you didn't want her to leave just yet.

xinyu hesitated for a second, but then nodded, climbing in beside you. she wrapped her arm around you, pulling you close, and you smiled, feeling a sense of peace you hadn't felt in a while.

"goodnight," xinyu whispered again, her voice barely audible.
