The first good MCU film since Iron Man 1. As usually, good performances all around, but the production values are also back up.

Which is important, because it would be too jarring if pre formula Steve didn't work (they cgi superimposed Chris Evan's head onto a smaller actor's body, so that they could show a scrawny Steve Rogers before the serum). While the effect wasn't flawless (you sometimes see photoshopping around his hair and helmet, or when his chin disappears into the v-neck of his t shirt) it was good enough not to offensively stick out. Sometimes you can't even tell.

When Dr Erskine (a very affable Stanley Tucci) selects Rogers as the super soldier, the scenes all feel very real and earnest, culminating in Tommy Lee Jones' grenade test, clinching Rogers over a bigger, stronger soldier.

When he gets detoured to being a recruitment actor rather than being a frontline soldier, and the film slows and gets a bit silly, but it's also necessary. Plus they threw in fan service by having his show costume match the original comic book outfit.

Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark is an awesome comedic foil for Evans' very straight laced Captain America; Hayley Atwell & TLJ are always awesome.

While it also drags a bit in the middle, this is an action packed, charming, feel good film from a time when it was easy to know who were the bad guys and who were the good guys, and as such it's a little bit goofy; it's the earnestness of all the performances that keeps the film grounded.

Amazingly, this is actually the worst of the Captain America films; which says a lot about this sub franchise and the cast's commitment to their characters.

Hugo Weaving in particular plays a potentially very cheesy & schlocky villain, but does so without any hamminess; huge props to him for pulling that off.

Random movie trivia the scene where his Red Skull vanishes, the Tesseract does actually show the other end in the cosmos. I can't belive how far in advance Marvel plans these things.

3d:

Watched in 2d in theatres first; then 3d theatre on a cruise ship; the 3d was good there, with good depth, but quite not as clear as I would've liked. On a home theatre, though, the 3d was *very* good; things didn't pop out as much as I would've thought, but Marvel (released under Paramount) put a great deal of thought into extending things into the background. Really clean 3d; point taken off for not popping out particle effects (which they didn't do for the 2nd Captain America either), but the 'laser' entrail effects from the Tessaract powered weapons was great. Also, blurred background and foreground objects even get depth (not just a single layer paste). I also miss the old Marvel opening where the comic panels within the logo were 3d (now the comic panels are flat within a 3d extruded "MARVEL")

I'm possibly slightly biased from having met one of the film's stars (McDonough), but I think this is a film everyone can enjoy, in large part due to the commitment of the entire cast. The one exception is you may dislike sad or bittersweet endings.

Technically my wife & I also met RDJ walking a small dog near the Stanley Park Sea Wall, but when I waved at him he whipped out a cell phone and pretended to be talkinf on it and walked on by. I still think Iron Man was awesone though.
