P2: Week 1 Field Trip Research
BEAR FRUIT ROLLS
The dominant elements of the package itself are the background colour and the silhouette of the bear. The simple shape and bright colours can be described as rough and childish;

Similar descriptors can be said of the typography and sans-serif typeface with itâs uneven edges and font-weights.
There are a lot of individual concepts represented within the illustrations including the bearâs silhouette that are meant to frame the typographyâs composition; especially on the back face of the package.
There are two clues that indicate the target audience being families and children.
Some excerpts from the package characterize the brand as âBEARâ as if they were a fictional individual character.
Also the package itself promotes collectible cards within each individual fruit-roll packet within the whole package.

The box has no border to itâs edges and the indicator colour is a base background colour to the entire box. The indicator colour is visible on all faces of the box making it easy to distinguish between from a distance.
Although the distributor operates within Laval, Quebec, the product itself is imported from South Africa.

The fruit and fruit-roll image takes up less than a quarter of the package on the front of the box on the lower-right side, and is also present on the right side tab.
The raster fruit picture is paired with an example raster image of the fruit-roll product. I suspect the raster fruit-roll is the same image between all packaged varieties; except colour corrected to best represent the actual colour of the fruit roll.

I feel like theyâve done a good job in making an appealing simple brand for families with children. Redesigning this packaging will be a good opportunity on improving my ability to keep my designs simple.
A main challenge with a lot of these imported packages is the French and English translations both needing to be visible which makes typography all the more important.
BLUE MONKEY SPARKLING "FRUIT JUICE" DRINK
The Blue Monkey brand seems to have modern yet impractical sensibilities. The text hierarchy is very distracting and poorly organized even without the vertical text. The composition layout is practically the same for the package of four cans.
The idea of having the text overlapping the picture of fruit with a rounded sans serif type is certainly a stylistic choice; however I don't think it helps with clarity or emphasis.
The solid background colour has the neat concept of bubbles near the top of the can to emphasize the liquid inside; however this element is frequently interrupted by the type and is so low on the hierarchy that it was the last thing I noticed.
There is a brand logo of a blue monkey on the back of the can, that I feel would work perfectly as an indicator for the brand if it were brought to the front of the can.
Each flavour is differentiated with different background colours and images of fruit; I think the white type gets lost in the highly saturated background and doesn't help emphasize the fruit picture.
Type is given an outline to match the background colour to help differentiate the type from the many overlapping elements of the composition. Overall this brand needs a lot of work to change itâs composition.
I wish I had talked about the blue monkey brand earlier; because once I had decided on âBear Fruit Rollsâ for my project, I started seeing Blue Monkey everywhere!
