When lit, ANM-446 fireworks produce a normal pyrotechnic display, except that the explosions form images and symbols related to U.S. culture and history, such as the flag, the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, Uncle Sam, etc. Additionally, ANM-446 emits sounds of American anthems, speeches, slogans, and patriotic songs at a volume loud enough to be heard within a 5 km radius.

The anomalous effect of ANM-446 manifests in people observing the display. These individuals undergo a temporary change in personality, becoming extremely patriotic, nationalistic, and loyal to the United States of America, regardless of origin, ethnicity, religion, or political opinion. This change lasts from a few hours to a few days, depending on the duration and intensity of exposure. Those affected by ANM-446 tend to express their patriotism verbally, through gestures, or behaviorally, sometimes resorting to violence against those they consider enemies or traitors of the American nation.

The origin and purpose of ANM-446 are unknown. Chemical and physical analyses have not revealed any significant differences between ANM-446 and common fireworks. The "Uncle Sam Fireworks" company does not officially exist, and there are no records of its production or distribution. The most likely hypothesis is that ANM-446 is a form of propaganda or psychological sabotage created by some group or individual with political or ideological interests in the United States of America.

The anomalous effect of ANM-446 affected about 200 people in the park, including the person who lit the fireworks. Those affected became extremely patriotic, nationalistic, and loyal to the USA, following Uncle Sam's orders, which instructed them to enlist in the army, attack immigrants, burn flags of other countries, among other violent and extremist actions.

A figure emerged from the crowd after the firework dissipated—a tall man with long white hair and a goatee, dressed and communicating like Uncle Sam. This individual was later identified as instance ANM-446-B, Uncle Sam himself, summoned by the fireworks.

Paula Scher

Paula Scher is one of the biggest names in contemporary graphic design. Her hand can be seen around the world, on event posters, company logos, music packaging, in art galleries, and more.  

In her youth, Scher was always interested in art and became the poster designer for her high school’s events. She studied her BFA at the Tyler School of Art, where she was taught by Stanislaw Zagorski, the youth culture icon who was a prolific designer in both Poland and the USA and was responsible for iconic album covers such as The Velvet Underground’s Revolver, and Cream’s Wheel of Fire. It was Zagorski who gave Scher the advice “illustrate the type,” which she credits as the three words which led to her success as a designer.  

Upon finishing her degree in the early 1970s, Scher moved to New York to pursue a career in design. She quickly landed a job with CBS Records as the record cover art director and contributed to hundreds of album covers throughout her 8 years with the company. Some of her most noteworthy work from this period is her series with Bob James, particularly the One to One cover which cleverly reworked something familiar (a matchbook) into something new.

In her album cover designs, she ensured that the image matched the soul of the music. In a time when many album designs featured photographs of artists, Scher was an advocate for including illustration. She used typography as needed by individual designs, but her strongest works made use of her skilful hand-lettering, like her work on Charles Mingus’ Changes One and Two.

Personally, I really like the design on the Cheap Tricks album cover (below), which plays with contrast and uses degraded letters that look like they have been hand applied with a technique like (rushed) lino-print. The result is striking, grungy, and comfortingly familiar.

In the mid 90s Scher began to work with The Public Theatre, designing posters for their up-and-coming events. In her designs she fused high and low brow styles, reflecting the ‘new wave’ that was prominent at the time. Scher designed the theatre's posters for their Shakespeare in the Park productions, which individually reflected the political happenings of the time, making subtle nods to events like the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal and the Iraq war. Scher capitalised off current events by staying in the know and understanding what was on the public’s mind; she captured the eye of the audience through understanding them then relating what they know to what she was trying to promote. Scher’s work with the Public was socially aware, and her use of dynamic, expressive, and bold design on their posters was a conscious choice to reflect the melting pot of a city that was (and is) New York. Her work on the Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk posters was playful, making use of bright colours and movement, while maintaining rules reminiscent of constructivism for the typography.

Being as prolific as she is, it is easy to see how Paula Scher - with her sophisticated and eye-catching body of work - is often referred to as the Queen of Graphic Design.

As to why, well, I get to go from a PC that was starting to remind of the Lost Temple of Asus (Google it) to something that's, well, presentable, at least.

Y'see, my last ATX build was handy. If things got too cruddy in there, I could easily reach inside and remove components one after the other. Now, I've got an ITX build that's absolutely fucking sexy and which I love to bits - but I am not removing a single component from there, it just isn't worth the trouble. There's no reach-in space, changing my GPU requires I set my case down on its side and use a pencil to reach for the GPU's latch, and if one of my RAM sticks ever goes bad, I'll probably just go "Eh, fuck it" and run off of 16 GBs until both of them crap out.

So, seeing as I'm not pulling a Greg Salazar and obsessively pulling everything apart, the duplex' garage unit and my Datavac will have to do.

On a semi-related note, I sort of got a kick of how obnoxious the thing's packaging is. When a Quebec-based designer designs something, you probably get one coy mention of it in the sales pitch on the back of the box. When an American company manages to assemble something without outsourcing more than individual components, you get a fucking deluge of stars-and-stripes and big and bombastic lines like "PROUDLY MADE TO LAST IN THE USA!"

I took a look at that and made the snidest face I could manage. "Well, sucks to be you, Mister Datavac, you're about to get used by two bilingual Francophones and a curious Ontarian Anglophone. The type who says About funny, so nyah!"
