Best hiking trip I have done so far
I spent six weeks in Perú and this trip was the absolute highlight for following reasons:
- The inca trail is in itself very beautiful with crazy views along the whole path.
- The many inca sights along the trail are incredible.
- Our guide introduced us to the history along the way. The history was packaged in small portions, which is perfect for understanding and learning. All our questions were answered.
- The food (most of the time three dishes) was really good. We were surprised by the skills of the chef who cooked everything in a small tent on two stoves.
- The porters were very reliable and spread good vibes, even on days that were very tough for them.
- The organisation was perfect from pickup to drop off.
- Last and most importantly, our guide Percy made the four days really fun and even paid attention to the smallest details. Just one example: he surprised us with Coca Cola Zero (which we are addicted to :D) on the last day at the Sungate after an exhausting hike to the top and with the first view at Machu Picchu.
All in all: I really recommend doing the inca trail and booking it with this company.

Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu: Weather, Crowds, and Hiking Conditions
Machu Picchu, the crown jewel of Peru, is a destination that attracts adventurers and history enthusiasts from around the globe. As you plan your visit, one of the most crucial decisions you'll make is determining the best time to go. The experience of Machu Picchu tours can vary significantly depending on the season, weather, and crowd levels. In this article, we'll explore the ideal times to visit, focusing on the weather, crowd dynamics, and hiking conditions, particularly on the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Understanding Machu Picchu’s Weather Patterns
Machu Picchu's unique location in the Andes mountains means it experiences distinct weather patterns throughout the year. Peru’s climate is broadly divided into two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.
Dry Season (May to October): This is the most popular time to visit Machu Picchu. The weather is generally clear and mild, making it ideal for hiking and exploring the ruins. Daytime temperatures range from 55°F to 75°F (13°C to 24°C), with cooler nights. The dry season offers the most reliable conditions for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, with minimal rain and stunning mountain views.
Rainy Season (November to April): While the rainy season sees fewer tourists, it also brings more unpredictable weather. Rain showers can be heavy, especially in February, when the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance. However, the landscape is lush and green, and the misty atmosphere adds a mystical quality to the ruins. If you don't mind a bit of rain, this season can provide a more intimate experience with fewer crowds.
Crowds at Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu’s popularity means it can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. Understanding the ebb and flow of visitors can help you plan a more enjoyable trip.
Peak Season (June to August): During these months, Machu Picchu tours are in high demand, with visitors flocking from around the world. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is often fully booked months in advance, and the site can feel crowded. If you plan to visit during this time, early bookings and planning are essential. Despite the crowds, the experience is rewarding, with clear skies and excellent hiking conditions.
Shoulder Seasons (April to May and September to October): These months offer a balance between good weather and fewer tourists. The trails are less congested, and you’ll have more space to explore the ruins. The shoulder seasons are particularly ideal for those who want to experience Machu Picchu tours without the peak season rush.
Off-Season (November to March): The rainy season coincides with the off-season for tourism. While the weather can be challenging, the reward is a quieter, more serene visit. The crowds thin out significantly, allowing for a more personal connection with the ancient site. If you’re up for an adventure, this could be the perfect time to take a Machu Picchu tour.
Hiking Conditions on the Inca Trail
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic hikes in the world. The trail weaves through diverse ecosystems, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into the ancient Incan civilization. However, the conditions on the trail vary depending on the time of year.
Dry Season (May to October): The trail is at its best during the dry season, with stable weather and clear paths. Hikers can enjoy spectacular views without worrying about slippery trails or mudslides. However, because this is the most popular time for the Inca Trail, permits sell out quickly, and the trail can be busy.
Rainy Season (November to April): Hiking the Inca Trail during the rainy season is challenging but not impossible. The trails can be muddy and slippery, requiring extra caution. The Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance, but other trekking routes to Machu Picchu remain open. The rain brings out the vibrant greenery and a sense of solitude on the trail, appealing to more adventurous travelers.
Conclusion: When Should You Visit?
The best time to visit Machu Picchu largely depends on your priorities. If you prefer clear skies, stable weather, and don’t mind the crowds, the dry season is your best bet. For those looking to avoid the peak season rush and enjoy a more peaceful experience, the shoulder seasons are ideal. And if you're an adventurous soul who doesn’t mind a bit of rain, the off-season offers a unique and quieter encounter with Machu Picchu.
No matter when you choose to visit, Machu Picchu will undoubtedly leave you in awe with its majestic beauty and historical significance. Whether you're hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu or exploring the ruins on a guided tour, the experience is bound to be unforgettable.
