Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #22
June 7-14 2024
Vice-President Harris announced that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is moving to remove medical debt for people's credit score. This move will improve the credit rating of 15 million Americans. Millions of Americans struggling with debt from medical expenses can't get approved for a loan for a car, to start a small business or buy a home. The new rule will improve credit scores by an average of 20 points and lead to 22,000 additional mortgages being approved every year. This comes on top of efforts by the Biden Administration to buy up and forgive medical debt. Through money in the American Rescue Plan $7 billion dollars of medical debt will be forgiven by the end of 2026. To date state and local governments have used ARP funds to buy up and forgive the debt of 3 million Americans and counting.
The EPA, Department of Agriculture, and FDA announced a joint "National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics". The Strategy aimed to cut food waste by 50% by 2030. Currently 24% of municipal solid waste in landfills is food waste, and food waste accounts for 58% of methane emissions from landfills roughly the green house gas emissions of 60 coal-fired power plants every year. This connects to $200 million the EPA already has invested in recycling, the largest investment in recycling by the federal government in 30 years. The average American family loses $1,500 ever year in spoiled food, and the strategy through better labeling, packaging, and education hopes to save people money and reduce hunger as well as the environmental impact.
President Biden signed with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy a ten-year US-Ukraine Security Agreement. The Agreement is aimed at helping Ukraine win the war against Russia, as well as help Ukraine meet the standards it will have to be ready for EU and NATO memberships. President Biden also spearheaded efforts at the G7 meeting to secure $50 billion for Ukraine from the 7 top economic nations.
HHS announced $500 million for the development of new non-injection vaccines against Covid. The money is part of Project NextGen a $5 billion program to accelerate and streamline new Covid vaccines and treatments. The investment announced this week will support a clinical trial of 10,000 people testing a vaccine in pill form. It's also supporting two vaccines administered as nasal sprays that are in earlier stages of development. The government hopes that break throughs in non-needle based vaccines for Covid might be applied to other vaccinations thus making vaccines more widely available and more easily administered.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced $404 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and the region. This brings the total invested by the Biden administration in the Palestinians to $1.8 billion since taking office, over $600 million since the war started in October 2023. The money will focus on safe drinking water, health care, protection, education, shelter, and psychosocial support.
The Department of the Interior announced $142 million for drought resilience and boosting water supplies. The funding will provide about 40,000 acre-feet of annual recycled water, enough to support more than 160,000 people a year. It's funding water recycling programs in California, Hawaii, Kansas, Nevada and Texas. It's also supporting 4 water desalination projects in Southern California. Desalination is proving to be an important tool used by countries with limited freshwater.
President Biden took the lead at the G7 on the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment. The PGI is a global program to connect the developing world to investment in its infrastructure from the G7 nations. So far the US has invested $40 billion into the program with a goal of $200 billion by 2027. The G7 overall plans on $600 billion by 2027. There has been heavy investment in the Lobito Corridor, an economic zone that runs from Angola, through the Democratic Republic of Congo, to Zambia, the PGI has helped connect the 3 nations by rail allowing land locked Zambia and largely landlocked DRC access Angolan ports. The PGI also is investing in a $900 million solar farm in Angola. The PGI got a $5 billion dollar investment from Microsoft aimed at expanding digital access in Kenya, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The PGI's bold vision is to connect Africa and the Indian Ocean region economically through rail and transportation link as well as boost greener economic growth in the developing world and bring developing nations on-line.

What’s a good reason to not take my own life? I’ve been feeling this way for years. Been to multiple treatment programs. Seen by several different therapists. Anti-depressants. I frequently go outdoors to exercise. Try to fill up my life with being optimistic about my (admittedly nice) job, hobbies, travel, and volunteering. And yet I’m still no better than I was 5 years ago and I have no hope about a happy future. “Your family will miss you.” Ok, and? I think it’s selfish to tell people in pain to continue living like that because some people might temporarily feel sad. They’ll eventually move on. My friends too, especially the ones who are happily married “to their best friends” and having babies and are so happy that they forget I exist.
Hey anon I hope I am not too late! I am just getting out of a hurricane and was without internet access for several days so i apologize for the delay.
But there are so many reasons not to take your own life. In fact, I can’t think of a single reason why you should.
I know it’s tough right now and trust me, I know that depression makes it all feel pointless and worthless and can plague you for years but even though if feels like forever I promise you these feelings and this depression and your circumstances are TEMPORARY. And it would be a tragedy for you to take your life over temporary circumstances and not see what is possible on the other side.
Yes your family and friends will miss you but you should stay because your life has purpose and meaning! Therapy and anti-depressants are good and I’m glad you’ve been trying those things because that means you don’t actually want to die - you just want the pain to stop. And that’s completely understandable and also manageable!
It’s great that you’ve been continuing to exercise and do volunteer work because those things can definitely impact your mood, but they aren’t the source of true joy, peace and happiness. Now I’m a Christian so I’m sure it won’t surprise you for me to say this, but what you are looking for and what you need can only come from God. I urge you to put your faith and trust in him and give him your burdens.
The devil has a hold on you right now, don’t let him win!
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. - Jeremiah 29:11
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” - John 10:10
“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” - psalm 55:22
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all.” - psalm 34:18-19
But now that I’ve gone on my spiel, here are some reasons I think it’s good to keep living. Not all my original thoughts but ones i agree with.
1. You matter
2. No one else is you.
3. Your younger self
4. Your next favorite song.
5. Warm blankets.
6. Thunderstorms
7. The fact that you’re in control of your future.
8. Experiencing new cultures.
9. Making new friends.
10. Road trips.
11. Sunsets and sunrises.
12. Reading good books.
13. Learning a new language.
14. Adopting a pet.
15. Fresh baked bread and cookies.
16. Getting packages in the mail.
17. Autumn.
18. Pumpkin spice.
19. Drinking coffee in the morning.
20. Beaches and being able to sink your toes into the sand.
21. Stepping on crunchy leaves.
22. Recovery.
23. Falling in love.
24. Rain.
25. Petting puppies and kittens.
26. Drinking water.
27. Trying something new and loving it.
28. Your favorite artist putting out new music.
29. A new season on your favorite TV show.
30. Planting a garden and growing your own vegetables.
31. Farmers Markets.
32. Trying out the newest local coffee shop or restaurant.
33. Karaoke
34. All of the people you have yet to meet.
35. Horseback riding
36. Stars.
37. Ice cream.
38. Ice tea.
39. Scented candles.
40. Learning something new.
41. Museums.
42. Going to the movies.
43. Hearing your favorite song come on the radio.
44. Learning to make a new recipe.
45. Your life is precious.
46. You are enough.
47. Random acts of kindness.
48. God looked at the world and thought it needed you.
49. Your story could save someone else.
50. Looking back on this time in 10 years and realizing you made it.
There’s an endless amount of reasons to stay alive and I hope some of them resonate with you.
But if you are desperate please reach out to the suicide prevention hotline at 988. If you are outside the US then you can find the number for your location here.
Please know that I am praying for you and please reach out to me again if you want to. I would love to keep up with how you are doing 💜

"In New Zealand, Pacific Island scientists have just been given a large grant to run a study trial on the use of the traditional kava preparation and kava ceremony for treating PTSD.
Believing it could help treat PTSD and other trauma in soldiers and veterans, police officers, and corrections facility staff, the two scientists want to revise the reputation of kava, which was damaged by a pharmaceutical rush into the product some years ago.
Dr. Apo Aporosa of Fijian descent on his mother’s side, and Dr. Sione Vaka from Tonga, have received $1 million from the Health Research Council to combine kava drink with the traditional ceremony of conversation.
“I’m so stoked that Health Research Council has faith in us as a team to do this critically important work,” Dr. Aporosa told the NZ Herald. “It’s likely we’re going to spend a million dollars to prove what traditional Pacific knowledge has been trying to tell Europeans for the last 200 years.”
Kava comes in many traditional names, all relating to the root of the Piper methysticum plant. Across the islands of the Pacific, the root was stirred in water and drank for its subtle euphoric, but also sedative properties. Accompanying the drink was a Talanoa or what Dr. Aporosa is referring to as “talk therapy,” but what was essentially a heart-to-heart conversation.
Their study will take two groups of people and give them both the whole kava drink plus the talanoa, referred to as “the full package” while another group will receive just the talanoa, and another group just the kavalactones—the active ingredient in the plant.
In 2009, the Cochrane Institute confirmed that kava was probably more effective than placebo for treating anxiety. At the time, pharmaceutical and supplement companies had quickly isolated kavalactones and sold them as a natural relaxant.
Like most indigenous populations, New Zealand’s Māori population suffers from higher rates of stress, trauma, and anxiety than the national average, and the Health Research Council believes that the Kava ceremony is the most sensible way to fulfill this unmet need.
“We do know that… talk therapy works for some PTSD cases,” Dr. Aporosa said, adding that talanoa is basically talk therapy, done while sitting on the floor rather than in chairs.
“We know that kava has relaxant properties, that kava is a natural anti-anxiety medication, so we combine those two elements in a culturally influenced space, and we’ve got something here that’s unique.”
Aporosa understands the situation better than most. Not only is he from Pacific stock, but he was a police officer who had to leave the force due to PTSD from the line of duty.
His experience traveling the world speaking with former military and police got him the Fulbright Scholarship to study the kava ceremony in Hawai’i, another island culture that uses the plant.
His hope is to show that it works significantly in the trial, and then release a free e-book about how to perform the ceremony and intervention, in order to ensure the largest number of people can access the knowledge of this traditional Pacific medicine."

The rise of the Indian bottled water industry began with the economic liberalisation process in 1991. The market was virtually stagnant until 1991, when the demand for bottled water was less than two million cases a year. However, since 1991-1992 it has not looked back, and the demand in 2004-05 was a staggering 82 million cases.
Parle Bisleri continues to hold 40 per cent of the market share. Kinley and Aquafina are fast catching up, with Kinley holding 20-25 per cent of the market and Aquafina approximately 10 per cent. The rest, including the smaller players, have 20-25 per cent of the market share.
Consumption of bottled water in India is linked to the level of prosperity in the different regions. The western region accounts for 40 per cent of the market and the eastern region just 10. However, the bottling plants are concentrated in the southern region - of the approximately 1,200 bottling water plants in India, 600 are in Tamil Nadu. This is a major problem because southern India, especially Tamil Nadu, is water starved.
The majority of the bottling plants - whether they produce bottled water or soft drinks - are dependent on groundwater. They create huge water stress in the areas where they operate because groundwater is also the main source - in most places the only source - of drinking water in India. This has created huge conflict between the community and the bottling plants.
Private companies in India can siphon out, exhaust and export groundwater free because the groundwater law in the country is archaic and not in tune with the realities of modern capitalist societies.
The existing law says that "the person who owns the land owns the groundwater beneath". This means that, theoretically, a person can buy one square metre of land and take all the groundwater of the surrounding areas and the law of land cannot object to it. This law is the core of the conflict between the community and the companies and the major reason for making the business of bottled water in the country highly lucrative.
Even with the state-of-the-art treatment system with reverse osmosis and membranes, the cost of treatment is a maximum of 25 paise a litre (Rs.0.25/litre). Therefore, the cost of producing 1 litre of packaged drinking water in India, without including the labour cost, is just Rs.0.25. In a nutshell, in manufacturing bottled water, the major costs are not in the production of treated and purified water but in the packaging and marketing of it.
Take for instance the case of Coca-Cola's bottling plant in drought-prone Kala Dera near Jaipur. Coca-Cola gets its water free except for a tiny cess (for discharging the wastewater) it pays to the State Pollution Control Board - a little over Rs.5,000 a year during 2000-02 and Rs.24,246 in 2003. It extracts half a million litres of water every day - at a cost of 14 paise per 1,000 litres. So, a Rs.10 per litre Kinley water has a raw material cost of just 0.02-0.03 paise. (It takes about two to three litres of groundwater to make one litre of bottled water.)
The reason that companies do not have to bear the cost of the main raw material - water - has made this industry highly profitable. But the real cost of the industry is huge.

Hemp Milk Dangers: What You Need to Know Before You Drink
Hemp milk has grown in popularity as a plant-based alternative to cow’s milk, thanks to its creamy texture, earthy flavor, and impressive array of nutrients. Made from hemp seeds blended with water, it’s a vegan-friendly option rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. However, like any food or drink, hemp milk has potential risks and concerns you should be aware of before making it a regular part of your diet. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Allergic Reactions
Although rare, hemp seeds can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Symptoms of a hemp seed allergy may include skin rashes, hives, itching, swelling, or even difficulty breathing in severe cases. If you have a history of seed or nut allergies, it’s wise to consult with a healthcare professional before trying hemp milk. Always check the ingredient list to ensure the product doesn’t contain additional allergens, such as tree nuts or soy.
2. Low Protein Content
One of the main drawbacks of hemp milk is its relatively low protein content compared to cow’s milk or other plant-based alternatives like soy or pea milk. While hemp milk is high in healthy fats, it typically contains only 2-3 grams of protein per cup. This makes it a less optimal choice for those who rely on milk as a significant protein source, such as athletes, growing children, or individuals following high-protein diets.
3. Potential Nutrient Deficiencies
Commercial hemp milk products are often fortified with calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients to mimic the nutritional profile of dairy milk. However, unfortified hemp milk may lack these essential nutrients, potentially leading to deficiencies if it’s your primary milk alternative. Always read the label and choose fortified versions to ensure you’re meeting your daily nutritional requirements.
4. High Calorie and Sugar Content in Some Brands
Not all hemp milk is created equal. Flavored or sweetened varieties can be high in added sugars and calories, which may contribute to weight gain or blood sugar imbalances, especially for individuals with diabetes or insulin resistance. To minimize these risks, opt for unsweetened hemp milk and add natural flavorings like cinnamon or vanilla if needed.
5. Digestive Sensitivities
Hemp milk is generally well-tolerated, but some people may experience digestive discomfort, such as bloating or mild diarrhea, particularly if they are not used to consuming plant-based beverages. This could be due to the high-fat content in hemp milk or added thickeners and stabilizers used in processing. If you have a sensitive stomach, start with small amounts and observe how your body reacts.
6. Interaction with Medications
Hemp seeds contain trace amounts of compounds that can interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners. The omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in hemp milk can affect blood clotting, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding in individuals taking anticoagulants. If you’re on medication, consult with your doctor to ensure that hemp milk won’t interfere with your treatment.
7. Taste Preferences
While not a health risk, it’s worth noting that hemp milk has a distinct earthy and nutty flavor that some people may find unappealing. This taste might take time to get used to, especially if you’re switching from the neutral flavor of dairy milk or other plant-based alternatives like almond or oat milk.
8. Environmental Concerns
Although hemp is generally considered eco-friendly due to its low water usage and ability to grow without pesticides, the production of commercial hemp milk still involves processing and packaging, which may have environmental impacts. Additionally, imported hemp products can contribute to a higher carbon footprint. Choosing locally produced hemp milk when possible can help mitigate these concerns.
Conclusion
Hemp milk is a nutritious and sustainable dairy alternative, but it’s not without its drawbacks. Understanding its potential risks—such as allergies, low protein content, and possible medication interactions—can help you make informed decisions about incorporating it into your diet. Always check ingredient labels, opt for fortified and unsweetened versions, and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any specific concerns. When consumed mindfully, hemp milk can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet.

How to Start a Water Bottle Business in India
Starting a water bottle business in India is a promising venture with potential for growth, given the increasing demand for safe drinking water. This guide will walk you through the steps, challenges, and strategies you need to successfully launch a water bottle business in India.
Why Start a Water Bottle Business in India?
The Growing Demand for Packaged Water
India’s population growth and urbanization are driving a substantial increase in demand for bottled water. People are becoming more conscious of water quality and prefer bottled water for convenience, especially in metropolitan areas.
Health and Wellness Trends
Awareness of health and wellness has led to a rise in demand for clean drinking water. As a result, the bottled water industry continues to expand, providing an excellent business opportunity.
Low Initial Investment Opportunities
Compared to other businesses, setting up a water bottling plant can start with a relatively low investment, making it feasible for first-time entrepreneurs.
Market Research and Business Plan
Identifying Your Target Market
Understanding your customer base is crucial. Are you targeting urban consumers, rural areas, or specific commercial clients like hotels and offices?
Analyzing the Competition
Conduct a competitive analysis to identify major players and niche opportunities in the market. This helps you understand pricing, customer preferences, and potential gaps.
Setting Business Goals and Financial Projections
Draft a business plan outlining your objectives, financial projections, and growth strategies. Set realistic goals and estimate costs for production, marketing, and distribution.
Choosing a Business Model
Retail vs. Wholesale Models
Decide if you want to sell directly to consumers or partner with retailers and distributors. Retail models require more customer engagement, while wholesale models often yield larger but less frequent orders.
In-house Bottling vs. Contract Manufacturing
With in-house bottling, you control the entire process, but it requires more investment. Contract manufacturing can save costs but may reduce control over product quality.
Legal Requirements and Certifications
Registering Your Business
Registering your business as a legal entity (such as an LLP, private limited company, or sole proprietorship) is the first step. It’s essential for accessing loans, insurance, and certain business certifications.
FSSAI Certification
An FSSAI license is required for food and beverage businesses in India to ensure your water meets safety standards. It’s a mandatory certificate that signals your compliance with food safety norms.
BIS Certification
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification ensures the quality of your water bottles, including the materials and water quality standards.
Additional Permits and Licenses
Check with local authorities for any additional permits, such as environmental clearance, to ensure your bottling plant adheres to government regulations.
Location and Infrastructure
Choosing the Right Location
Choose a location with easy access to your target market and suppliers. Proximity to distribution points reduces transportation costs and enhances product accessibility.
Facility Requirements for Bottling
Your bottling plant should have facilities for purification, bottling, and packaging. Design a layout that supports smooth workflow and compliance with health and safety standards.
Infrastructure for Storage and Transportation
Invest in storage for raw materials and finished products, as well as vehicles or partnerships for product distribution.
Equipment and Machinery
Essential Bottling Equipment
Key machinery includes filling, capping, and labeling machines. Choose machinery that aligns with your production volume and budget.
Water Purification Systems
Install a reliable purification system that meets regulatory standards to ensure water quality. Common methods include reverse osmosis, UV treatment, and ozonation.
Quality Control and Testing Machinery
Quality control ensures your water meets health and safety standards. Invest in testing equipment to monitor water purity, pH levels, and more.
Sourcing Water and Raw Materials
Selecting a Reliable Water Source
A stable water source is vital for production continuity. Ensure your water source complies with regulatory standards and does not deplete local resources.
Packaging Materials (Bottles, Caps, Labels)
Choose durable and eco-friendly materials to improve product appeal and sustainability. Build partnerships with suppliers to ensure a steady supply.
Water Purification and Filtration Process
Common Purification Methods
Effective methods include filtration, reverse osmosis, UV treatment, and mineral adjustment. Choose a combination that best suits your water source and desired product quality.
Maintaining Water Quality Standards
Regularly test your water to maintain consistent quality, as substandard products can harm your brand and lead to regulatory penalties.
Branding and Marketing Strategy
Naming and Logo Design
Your brand name and logo should reflect your mission. Focus on simplicity, cleanliness, and trustworthiness to resonate with customers.
Packaging and Labeling
Label your bottles with essential details like mineral content, source, and certification logos. Visually appealing and informative packaging enhances your brand’s visibility.
Marketing Channels (Digital, Offline)
Leverage digital marketing, social media, and search engine optimization to reach customers online. Offline strategies can include partnerships with retailers, hoardings, and in-store promotions.
Distribution and Sales Channels
Retail Outlets and Supermarkets
Securing placement in retail stores and supermarkets increases your product’s visibility and accessibility to consumers.
Online Platforms
List your products on e-commerce sites and food delivery apps. An online presence expands reach and offers convenience to customers.
Building Partnerships with Distributors
Distributors help expand your reach and manage logistics, especially in areas beyond your direct distribution network.
Pricing Strategy
Competitive Pricing Models
Analyze competitors’ pricing and consider production costs to set a price that attracts customers while ensuring profitability.
Wholesale vs. Retail Pricing
Offer bulk discounts to wholesalers or retailers for larger orders. Retail prices can be set slightly higher to maximize per-unit profit.
Challenges and How to Overcome Them
Regulatory Challenges
Complying with various regulations can be complex. Stay updated on changes in industry regulations and maintain documentation for all certifications.
Competition from Big Brands
Smaller brands often struggle against established brands. Differentiate by focusing on quality, branding, and targeted marketing to create a unique selling point.
Managing Operational Costs
Monitor expenses carefully and optimize production processes to maintain profitability without compromising on quality.
Sustainability in Water Bottling
Eco-Friendly Packaging
Consider using recycled and biodegradable materials. Eco-friendly packaging not only helps the environment but also appeals to a growing base of eco-conscious customers.
Water Conservation Practices
Implement sustainable practices, such as reusing water where possible and minimizing waste, to conserve resources and reduce operational costs.
