Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #22
June 7-14 2024
Vice-President Harris announced that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is moving to remove medical debt for people's credit score. This move will improve the credit rating of 15 million Americans. Millions of Americans struggling with debt from medical expenses can't get approved for a loan for a car, to start a small business or buy a home. The new rule will improve credit scores by an average of 20 points and lead to 22,000 additional mortgages being approved every year. This comes on top of efforts by the Biden Administration to buy up and forgive medical debt. Through money in the American Rescue Plan $7 billion dollars of medical debt will be forgiven by the end of 2026. To date state and local governments have used ARP funds to buy up and forgive the debt of 3 million Americans and counting.
The EPA, Department of Agriculture, and FDA announced a joint "National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics". The Strategy aimed to cut food waste by 50% by 2030. Currently 24% of municipal solid waste in landfills is food waste, and food waste accounts for 58% of methane emissions from landfills roughly the green house gas emissions of 60 coal-fired power plants every year. This connects to $200 million the EPA already has invested in recycling, the largest investment in recycling by the federal government in 30 years. The average American family loses $1,500 ever year in spoiled food, and the strategy through better labeling, packaging, and education hopes to save people money and reduce hunger as well as the environmental impact.
President Biden signed with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy a ten-year US-Ukraine Security Agreement. The Agreement is aimed at helping Ukraine win the war against Russia, as well as help Ukraine meet the standards it will have to be ready for EU and NATO memberships. President Biden also spearheaded efforts at the G7 meeting to secure $50 billion for Ukraine from the 7 top economic nations.
HHS announced $500 million for the development of new non-injection vaccines against Covid. The money is part of Project NextGen a $5 billion program to accelerate and streamline new Covid vaccines and treatments. The investment announced this week will support a clinical trial of 10,000 people testing a vaccine in pill form. It's also supporting two vaccines administered as nasal sprays that are in earlier stages of development. The government hopes that break throughs in non-needle based vaccines for Covid might be applied to other vaccinations thus making vaccines more widely available and more easily administered.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced $404 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and the region. This brings the total invested by the Biden administration in the Palestinians to $1.8 billion since taking office, over $600 million since the war started in October 2023. The money will focus on safe drinking water, health care, protection, education, shelter, and psychosocial support.
The Department of the Interior announced $142 million for drought resilience and boosting water supplies. The funding will provide about 40,000 acre-feet of annual recycled water, enough to support more than 160,000 people a year. It's funding water recycling programs in California, Hawaii, Kansas, Nevada and Texas. It's also supporting 4 water desalination projects in Southern California. Desalination is proving to be an important tool used by countries with limited freshwater.
President Biden took the lead at the G7 on the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment. The PGI is a global program to connect the developing world to investment in its infrastructure from the G7 nations. So far the US has invested $40 billion into the program with a goal of $200 billion by 2027. The G7 overall plans on $600 billion by 2027. There has been heavy investment in the Lobito Corridor, an economic zone that runs from Angola, through the Democratic Republic of Congo, to Zambia, the PGI has helped connect the 3 nations by rail allowing land locked Zambia and largely landlocked DRC access Angolan ports. The PGI also is investing in a $900 million solar farm in Angola. The PGI got a $5 billion dollar investment from Microsoft aimed at expanding digital access in Kenya, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The PGI's bold vision is to connect Africa and the Indian Ocean region economically through rail and transportation link as well as boost greener economic growth in the developing world and bring developing nations on-line.

What’s a good reason to not take my own life? I’ve been feeling this way for years. Been to multiple treatment programs. Seen by several different therapists. Anti-depressants. I frequently go outdoors to exercise. Try to fill up my life with being optimistic about my (admittedly nice) job, hobbies, travel, and volunteering. And yet I’m still no better than I was 5 years ago and I have no hope about a happy future. “Your family will miss you.” Ok, and? I think it’s selfish to tell people in pain to continue living like that because some people might temporarily feel sad. They’ll eventually move on. My friends too, especially the ones who are happily married “to their best friends” and having babies and are so happy that they forget I exist.
Hey anon I hope I am not too late! I am just getting out of a hurricane and was without internet access for several days so i apologize for the delay.
But there are so many reasons not to take your own life. In fact, I can’t think of a single reason why you should.
I know it’s tough right now and trust me, I know that depression makes it all feel pointless and worthless and can plague you for years but even though if feels like forever I promise you these feelings and this depression and your circumstances are TEMPORARY. And it would be a tragedy for you to take your life over temporary circumstances and not see what is possible on the other side.
Yes your family and friends will miss you but you should stay because your life has purpose and meaning! Therapy and anti-depressants are good and I’m glad you’ve been trying those things because that means you don’t actually want to die - you just want the pain to stop. And that’s completely understandable and also manageable!
It’s great that you’ve been continuing to exercise and do volunteer work because those things can definitely impact your mood, but they aren’t the source of true joy, peace and happiness. Now I’m a Christian so I’m sure it won’t surprise you for me to say this, but what you are looking for and what you need can only come from God. I urge you to put your faith and trust in him and give him your burdens.
The devil has a hold on you right now, don’t let him win!
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. - Jeremiah 29:11
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” - John 10:10
“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” - psalm 55:22
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all.” - psalm 34:18-19
But now that I’ve gone on my spiel, here are some reasons I think it’s good to keep living. Not all my original thoughts but ones i agree with.
1. You matter
2. No one else is you.
3. Your younger self
4. Your next favorite song.
5. Warm blankets.
6. Thunderstorms
7. The fact that you’re in control of your future.
8. Experiencing new cultures.
9. Making new friends.
10. Road trips.
11. Sunsets and sunrises.
12. Reading good books.
13. Learning a new language.
14. Adopting a pet.
15. Fresh baked bread and cookies.
16. Getting packages in the mail.
17. Autumn.
18. Pumpkin spice.
19. Drinking coffee in the morning.
20. Beaches and being able to sink your toes into the sand.
21. Stepping on crunchy leaves.
22. Recovery.
23. Falling in love.
24. Rain.
25. Petting puppies and kittens.
26. Drinking water.
27. Trying something new and loving it.
28. Your favorite artist putting out new music.

Please know that I am praying for you and please reach out to me again if you want to. I would love to keep up with how you are doing 💜

"In New Zealand, Pacific Island scientists have just been given a large grant to run a study trial on the use of the traditional kava preparation and kava ceremony for treating PTSD.
Believing it could help treat PTSD and other trauma in soldiers and veterans, police officers, and corrections facility staff, the two scientists want to revise the reputation of kava, which was damaged by a pharmaceutical rush into the product some years ago.
Dr. Apo Aporosa of Fijian descent on his mother’s side, and Dr. Sione Vaka from Tonga, have received $1 million from the Health Research Council to combine kava drink with the traditional ceremony of conversation.
“I’m so stoked that Health Research Council has faith in us as a team to do this critically important work,” Dr. Aporosa told the NZ Herald. “It’s likely we’re going to spend a million dollars to prove what traditional Pacific knowledge has been trying to tell Europeans for the last 200 years.”
Kava comes in many traditional names, all relating to the root of the Piper methysticum plant. Across the islands of the Pacific, the root was stirred in water and drank for its subtle euphoric, but also sedative properties. Accompanying the drink was a Talanoa or what Dr. Aporosa is referring to as “talk therapy,” but what was essentially a heart-to-heart conversation.
Their study will take two groups of people and give them both the whole kava drink plus the talanoa, referred to as “the full package” while another group will receive just the talanoa, and another group just the kavalactones—the active ingredient in the plant.
In 2009, the Cochrane Institute confirmed that kava was probably more effective than placebo for treating anxiety. At the time, pharmaceutical and supplement companies had quickly isolated kavalactones and sold them as a natural relaxant.
Like most indigenous populations, New Zealand’s Māori population suffers from higher rates of stress, trauma, and anxiety than the national average, and the Health Research Council believes that the Kava ceremony is the most sensible way to fulfill this unmet need.
“We do know that… talk therapy works for some PTSD cases,” Dr. Aporosa said, adding that talanoa is basically talk therapy, done while sitting on the floor rather than in chairs.
“We know that kava has relaxant properties, that kava is a natural anti-anxiety medication, so we combine those two elements in a culturally influenced space, and we’ve got something here that’s unique.”
Aporosa understands the situation better than most. Not only is he from Pacific stock, but he was a police officer who had to leave the force due to PTSD from the line of duty.
His experience traveling the world speaking with former military and police got him the Fulbright Scholarship to study the kava ceremony in Hawai’i, another island culture that uses the plant.
His hope is to show that it works significantly in the trial, and then release a free e-book about how to perform the ceremony and intervention, in order to ensure the largest number of people can access the knowledge of this traditional Pacific medicine."

The rise of the Indian bottled water industry began with the economic liberalisation process in 1991. The market was virtually stagnant until 1991, when the demand for bottled water was less than two million cases a year. However, since 1991-1992 it has not looked back, and the demand in 2004-05 was a staggering 82 million cases.
Parle Bisleri continues to hold 40 per cent of the market share. Kinley and Aquafina are fast catching up, with Kinley holding 20-25 per cent of the market and Aquafina approximately 10 per cent. The rest, including the smaller players, have 20-25 per cent of the market share.
Consumption of bottled water in India is linked to the level of prosperity in the different regions. The western region accounts for 40 per cent of the market and the eastern region just 10. However, the bottling plants are concentrated in the southern region - of the approximately 1,200 bottling water plants in India, 600 are in Tamil Nadu. This is a major problem because southern India, especially Tamil Nadu, is water starved.
The majority of the bottling plants - whether they produce bottled water or soft drinks - are dependent on groundwater. They create huge water stress in the areas where they operate because groundwater is also the main source - in most places the only source - of drinking water in India. This has created huge conflict between the community and the bottling plants.
Private companies in India can siphon out, exhaust and export groundwater free because the groundwater law in the country is archaic and not in tune with the realities of modern capitalist societies.
The existing law says that "the person who owns the land owns the groundwater beneath". This means that, theoretically, a person can buy one square metre of land and take all the groundwater of the surrounding areas and the law of land cannot object to it. This law is the core of the conflict between the community and the companies and the major reason for making the business of bottled water in the country highly lucrative.
Even with the state-of-the-art treatment system with reverse osmosis and membranes, the cost of treatment is a maximum of 25 paise a litre (Rs.0.25/litre). Therefore, the cost of producing 1 litre of packaged drinking water in India, without including the labour cost, is just Rs.0.25. In a nutshell, in manufacturing bottled water, the major costs are not in the production of treated and purified water but in the packaging and marketing of it.
Take for instance the case of Coca-Cola's bottling plant in drought-prone Kala Dera near Jaipur. Coca-Cola gets its water free except for a tiny cess (for discharging the wastewater) it pays to the State Pollution Control Board - a little over Rs.5,000 a year during 2000-02 and Rs.24,246 in 2003. It extracts half a million litres of water every day - at a cost of 14 paise per 1,000 litres. So, a Rs.10 per litre Kinley water has a raw material cost of just 0.02-0.03 paise. (It takes about two to three litres of groundwater to make one litre of bottled water.)
The reason that companies do not have to bear the cost of the main raw material - water - has made this industry highly profitable. But the real cost of the industry is huge.

When it comes to designing and producing mineral water plants in the center of Chennai's industrial environment, Canadian Crystalline is a name that sticks out. Canadian Crystalline is a significant player in the market thanks to its unmatched reputation for providing high-quality water treatment products. However, what distinguishes this business in such a cutthroat industry? How can it meet the changing demands of sectors in India and abroad while preserving its reputation as a cutting-edge company?
This article dives into Canadian Crystalline’s role as a mineral water plant manufacturer in Chennai, exploring its technological innovations, market reach, and the value it brings to industries that require clean, processed water.
1. Canadian Crystalline: A Brief Overview
Canadian Crystalline was founded to provide sophisticated water treatment solutions, and it has since grown to become one of the most important mineral water plant manufacturers not only in Chennai but worldwide. The company manufactures and exports full water treatment systems, including filtration, purification, bottling, and packaging.
Their product line includes water softening plants, reverse osmosis systems, ultrafiltration plants, and whole bottled water production lines. The business's position in the sector has been solidified by its capacity to offer complete solutions, from design, engineering, and installation to post-purchase support.
However, Canadian Crystalline is dedicated to quality and sustainability in addition to its products. Their plants are built with efficiency and environmental effect reduction in mind, guaranteeing both financial and ecological gains.

Canadian Crystalline comes into play here. Their mineral water plants are designed to serve a variety of scales, ensuring that both small- and large-scale businesses are covered.
Canadian Crystalline processes ensure that the water is not only pure but also contains necessary minerals, making it safe to drink.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems: Their RO systems remove up to 99% of dissolved pollutants, guaranteeing that the water is clean and wholesome to drink. While Canadian Crystalline is headquartered in Chennai, its reach is global. The company exports its water treatment solutions to over 45 countries, including the USA, UK, and several nations across the Middle East and Africa.
However, they have a competitive advantage in Chennai because of their local knowledge. They are aware of the particular water issues facing the area, such as groundwater contamination and saline water incursion. Canadian Crystalline creates tailored solutions to deal with these particular problems, guaranteeing the smooth and effective operation of enterprises in Chennai and throughout Tamil Nadu.
Moreover, their robust after-sales service ensures that clients receive timely maintenance and support, a crucial aspect in an industry where downtime can lead to significant losses.
5. Choosing the Right Solution: How Canadian Crystalline Can Help
There are many benefits to selecting Canadian Crystalline if your company in Chennai wants to build a mineral water factory. They offer a smooth, end-to-end experience, from thorough consultations and feasibility studies to installation and continuing support. Their scalability is one of their main advantages. Whether you're building a modest water plant for a local community or a large industrial-scale operation, Canadian Crystalline has answers for you.
Why Canadian Crystalline Stands Out

PFAS Water Filters: Protecting Your Health from Forever Chemicals
Tumblr media
In recent years, PFAS contamination has become a growing concern for communities around the world. Known as "forever chemicals," Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals that do not break down easily in the environment or the human body, leading to potential health risks. As awareness of PFAS increases, many are looking for ways to protect themselves from these harmful chemicals, and one of the most effective solutions is using PFAS water filters.
This blog will explore the dangers of PFAS, the benefits of using PFAS water filters, and how to choose the right filter to ensure your drinking water is safe.
What are PFAS?
PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used in various industries since the 1940s. They are commonly found in products like non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, firefighting foams, and certain food packaging. While their resistance to heat, water, and oil makes them useful in many applications, these same qualities mean they persist in the environment and our bodies for long periods.
Some of the health risks associated with PFAS exposure include:
Increased risk of cancer
Immune system suppression
Liver damage
Thyroid hormone disruption
Developmental issues in children
How Do PFAS Get into Drinking Water?
PFAS can enter water sources through industrial discharges, firefighting foam runoff, and even landfill leachate. Since they are highly mobile in water, PFAS can spread over large areas and contaminate groundwater, rivers, and lakes, eventually reaching our taps.
Drinking water contaminated with PFAS is a major exposure route for many people. Unfortunately, conventional water treatment plants are not always equipped to remove these chemicals, making it essential for individuals to take extra steps to filter PFAS from their water supply.
How Do PFAS Water Filters Work?
Not all water filters can remove PFAS. Filters designed specifically for this purpose often use activated carbon, reverse osmosis, or a combination of filtration technologies to effectively capture and eliminate PFAS compounds.
Activated Carbon Filters: These filters trap PFAS molecules on the surface of carbon granules. While highly effective, activated carbon filters require regular replacement to maintain their efficiency.
Reverse Osmosis Systems: These systems use a semi-permeable membrane to remove PFAS along with other contaminants. Reverse osmosis is one of the most effective methods for filtering PFAS, but it can be more expensive and may waste more water compared to other methods.
Ion Exchange Filters: Some advanced filtration systems use ion exchange resins to specifically target and remove PFAS compounds. These filters are highly effective for long-chain PFAS chemicals, such as PFOA and PFOS.
Benefits of PFAS Water Filters
Protection Against Health Risks The most significant benefit of PFAS water filters is the protection they offer against the harmful effects of these chemicals. By removing PFAS from your drinking water, you reduce your risk of cancer, hormonal disruptions, and other serious health conditions linked to PFAS exposure.
Improved Water Quality Beyond just PFAS, many of these filtration systems also remove other common contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, and chlorine, improving the overall quality and taste of your drinking water.
Peace of Mind Knowing that your water is free from toxic chemicals can provide peace of mind, especially for families with young children who are more vulnerable to the effects of PFAS.
Choosing the Right PFAS Water Filter
When selecting a PFAS water filter, it’s essential to choose one that has been tested and certified for PFAS removal. Look for filters certified by reputable organizations, such as the NSF International or Water Quality Association (WQA), for the reduction of PFOA and PFOS levels.
Here are a few factors to consider:
Type of Filter: Decide whether an activated carbon filter, reverse osmosis system, or another filtration method is right for your household based on your budget, water usage, and filtration needs.
Filter Maintenance: Consider how often the filter needs to be replaced and whether you can easily maintain the system.
Size and Installation: Choose between whole-house filtration systems or under-sink filters, depending on whether you want to filter all the water in your home or just your drinking water supply.
Final Thoughts
PFAS contamination is a serious environmental and health issue, but taking proactive steps to protect your family with a PFAS water filter can reduce your exposure. Whether you choose an activated carbon filter, reverse osmosis system, or a combination of technologies, investing in the right filter is an important step toward safer, cleaner water.
By staying informed and choosing a reliable water filtration system, you can safeguard your health and minimize the impact of these harmful "forever chemicals" on your household.
