FINISHING LINE PRESS CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY:
Winner of the New Women’s Voices Prize in Poetry
Kairos, NWVS #148
by Libby Maxey
$14.99, paper
https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/kairos-by-libby-maxey-nwvs-winner-148/
Libby Maxey has a BA in English from Whitman College and an MA in medieval studies from Cornell University. She is a senior editor at the online journal Literary Mama, where she has been a part of the Literary Reflections department since 2012, and she reviews poetry for The Mom Egg Reviewand Solstice. Her own poems have appeared in Kestrel, Pinyon, Emrys, Crannóg Magazine and elsewhere. Her nonliterary activities include singing classical repertoire and mothering two sons. She lives with her family in Western Massachusetts.
Come. Open these wintry pages and slip on “music’s warmest coat.” Read these tidy sonnets, wrapped with precision, and ruminate on ways the senses speak to intimacy, mortality, and geography. With skill and grace, Libby Maxey crafts a version of our world where “leaves are bickering relics in the street” and “each gliss / of swithering breeze might have been prophecy.” This award-winning collection is a gift of sound and contemplation. We need these enduring words in this ageless form. Kairos is, after all, perfect timing.
–Christine Stewart-Nuñez, author of Untrussed (University of New Mexico Press) and Bluewords Greening (Terrapin Books)
In her collection of sonnets, Libby Maxey often illuminates spaces that are secluded, abandoned, or otherwise unsung. The formal poetic landscapes she has carefully designed achieve a striking blend of constraint and vibrancy. As she writes in one piece, “I sing by numbers, measured breath, each note / A contoured shape.” These verses surprise and shimmer with gorgeous vocabulary, each a well-crafted gem that resists the formulaic. The poet alludes to Dickinson and contemplates classical subjects such as Penelope as adeptly as she considers concrete and cows, snowplows and sulfur, fieldstone and fair food. Whether mundane or celestial, Maxey’s lines are always smart and beautiful. Concerned with the passage of time—upon the natural world, upon the domestic terrain of marriage and children, upon the muse—these sonnets celebrate more than they mourn. The poems in Kairos take a stand for continuity and for paying attention; each a short song of harnessed meter and rhyme, “How quick they bloom / And spark.”
–Rebecca Hart Olander, editor/director of Perugia Press
Libby Maxey’s poems are antiphons of thought/emotion and design/mysticism in perfect accord. Few poets these days are brave enough to yoke their talent to form. Libby does this exquisitely; she invites the words themselves to do half the work, enhancing and elevating the meaning of chosen places, relationships, situations. She asks in the first poem, “Do you know all my patterns and designs? / Or how I titivate the syntax of / The moment with an heirloom comb?” Libby’s subjects are often homely, diurnal and immediate, passionately her own, yet resonant. Her epistle, “Pas de Deux”, inquires, “Do you not find your name is more your own / When in my hand?” Neither rhyme nor meter is ever forced in these pages. Rather, the reader is affirmed by the rightness of poetic phrasing, verbal inspiration. Libby’s formalism includes metaphors of subtle brilliance, and through the breadth and daring of her vocabulary, we celebrate the lost gods of our language. The variety—and cohesion—of these poems create a true kairos, an opportune moment in the span of poetry.
–Joanne Clarkson, author of The Fates (Bright Hill Press)

Jacob & Kathleen’s Armstrong Farms Wedding
Jacob and Kathleen were married on April 21st 2018, with a ceremony and reception at the Fieldstone Barn at Armstrong Farms. This couple was a lot of fun and I loved everything about this wedding!
Kathleen and Jacob’s Armstrong Farms Barn Wedding
I spent the morning with Kathleen and the girls as they got ready, while Lizzy, my associate photographer and second shooter, spent her time with Jacob and the guys at the farm. Both of us were sure to get plenty of pictures not only of the couple but of the details that were poured into this wedding.
This was particularly important because Kathleen’s aunts made ALL of the florals. They took a few classes and put their new skills to work to produce details that were a wedding photographer’s dream! Oh, and if you’ve seen Friends, then one look at the cake topper and you’ll immediately know why I love this couple!
The way these two feed off each other and make each other laugh constantly is contagious. I had a smile on my face the entire day—and nearly cracked a rib laughing at Kathleen at one point during the bride and groom portraits!
Since Jacob is 6’9”, the height difference was pretty extreme, but Kathleen wasn’t about to let that stop her. Instead, she jumped up on a tree swing! I was petrified until I saw her swinging about like she was an acrobat—and remembered that she was in gymnastics growing up. Once I calmed down, I had to laugh, and that moment made for some of my favorite photos!
That’s really what a wedding is all about, after all. You want to be able to smile and have fun on one of the most important days of your life! And boy, do these two know how to do that!
Kathleen and Jacob, thank you for asking us to be part of your wedding day—and for bringing so much joy and laughter with you!

$1.3 Million Homes in Pennsylvania, California and Montana
Waverly, Pa. | $1.3 Million
A 1973 house with four bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms designed by the architect Peter Q. Bohlin
This wood-and-glass house is built on the fieldstone foundation of an old barn in a village that is 10 miles north of Scranton, Pa., and two and a half hours northwest of New York City. It sits on 26 rolling acres surrounded by mature trees and the poetic remains of farm outbuildings. Mr. Bohlin, who may be best known for Apple’s minimalist stores, designed the home and a 1990 addition.
Size: 5,108 square feet
Price per square foot: $255
Indoors: The building, with its gray-stained wood siding and large, square windows (often framed in cherry red inside the home), is long but not linear. Sawtooth columns of glass edge the brick-paved foyer. On one side is a living room with a fieldstone chimney that soars to the double-height ceiling. On the other side is a formal dining room with a long built-in credenza and verdant views.
The adjacent eat-in kitchen has white cabinets and appliances, butcher-block countertops and linoleum floors. Passing through the kitchen, you reach the skylighted addition that the owners use as a study. Beams taken from an arbor that was dismantled to create the addition are interlaced below the ceiling, and a second fieldstone fireplace occupies the end of the space.
Upstairs, the master bedroom overlooks the living room. It is edged by a waist-high zigzag wall with built-in storage, and has wide, treetop views. The master suite includes a walk-in closet and a bathroom faced in slabs of Vermont slate.
A sitting room that overlooks the foyer has interior shutters that can be closed for privacy. This floor also has three guest bedrooms that share a bathroom.
Outdoor space: Partially covered stone patios are in front and back. A long arbor extends from the attached two-car garage. (Grapevines were once planted there, but did not take.)
Taxes: $10,529

Long Beach, Calif. | $1.299 Million
A two-family house built in 1936, with two bedrooms and one bathroom on each of two floors
This home is in the Belmont Shore neighborhood, below East Second Street, a shopping district with boutiques and restaurants densely lining streets with a tree-studded median. The beach is four blocks away.
Size: 2,312 square feet
Price per square foot: $562
Indoors: The current owners, who bought the house in 2002 and did some renovations soon after, have used it as a single-family dwelling, but it was designed for two families. The layouts are identical, with each floor opening into a large living room that flows into a dining area and takes a right into a square kitchen with an adjacent laundry room. A short hallway leads from the dining area to a pair of small bedrooms that share a bathroom with a combined tub and shower. Most of the floors are the original oak; the kitchen has linoleum floors and tile walls and countertops.
Some differences: The first-floor living and dining rooms are lined with display shelves, and the living room has a built-in daybed with storage compartments. The second-floor kitchen includes a Wolf range. You’ll find a bright-green bedroom below and an acid-yellow bathroom above. The two units are connected by a staircase, but a wall could be built, creating privacy. The units have separate gas and water meters.
Outdoor space: French doors in the lower living room open to a covered front porch. The units share a rear patio, and each has access to a one-car garage. The lot is 0.07 acres.
Taxes: $4,785 (2018, based on an assessment of $366,591)
Contact: David Melford, Compass, 626-705-0637; compass.com
Bozeman, Mont. | $1.295 Million
A house built in 1880, with four bedroom and three bathrooms
This house is in the South Tracy-South Black Avenue Historic District, three blocks from the heart of Main Street. It was built for a businessman and his family who used it as a town home in winter, relocating to their rural ranch in summer. The most recent renovations were completed in 2017.
Size: 2,310 square feet
Price per square foot: $561
Indoors: The main level has 11-foot ceilings and solid white-oak floorboards with hemlock baseboard trim. New windows and doors fill the original frames, and custom wrought-iron spindles match the existing metalwork on the staircase.
The modernized interior includes a living room with a gas fireplace that flows into a kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and granite countertops. A separate formal dining room has a bay window.
The two bedrooms on the main floor include a master with a walk-in closet and an en suite bathroom with double sinks, a tub and a large tiled shower. The guest room on this level has built-in cabinets and access to a hallway bathroom.
Two bedrooms and one bathroom are on the second floor. One bedroom has a closet fashioned from materials from the original kitchen pantry.
The cellar, which is a fine place to store wine, has an exposed stone foundation finished with original Douglas fir framing timbers. It is reached by steps descending from an exterior deck, or by ladder from the main-floor laundry room.
Outdoor space: French doors in the bedroom open to the backyard. The 0.19-acre property is planted with lilacs and has room for an accessory dwelling unit.
Taxes: $3,997 (2018, based on an assessment of $424,500)
