The world loves the rich and famous, but God loves the unknown and the nobodies. The world loves the rich and the powerful, but God loves the poor and the weak. Our world loves the extraordinary, but God loves the ordinary—people like you and me.

I sometimes wonder how God could love me. I have failed Him ever so many times. But His love is relentless, consistent, and persistent. God says, "Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you" (Jeremiah 31:3).

The heart of God

Acta non verba. It’s Latin, for “deeds not words.”

It’s the motto for who knows how many military units, schools, and groups. Because it points to a universal truth.

One that applies equally to us as human beings and to our Maker (where do you think we got it from?).

Much more so than anything we say, our actions reveal who we really are.

Today’s Gospel gives us one of those moments. Where – without a single word from Jesus – we get a glimpse into the heart of God.  

On His way to Jerusalem, Jesus passes through a Samaritan village.

This is a village that had previously welcomed Him with open arms. Jesus preached there and healed people. Back in the day, they’d even begged Him to stay.

But not today. Once they found out where Jesus was going, they refused to welcome Him.

That’s how much the Samaritans hated the people down in Jerusalem.

(If you’ve ever had a “friend” – someone you did everything for – turn their back on you after one small misstep, then you understand what’s going on here.)

If Jesus did something to get back at the Samaritans? If He lashed out at them for being this way? No one would blame Him.

It’s a very understandable, very human response – to someone being this petty.

But when James and John ask Him about getting back at the Samaritans?

Not only does Jesus refuse to do that, He rebukes James and John for even thinking that He would want to.

Because there is nothing the Samaritans can do that will stop Him from loving them.

It’s a glimpse into the heart of God.

One that shows us exactly how God looks at each one of His creations. Even you and me.

No matter what we’ve done. No matter how unforgiveable we think things are. No matter how petty we are. No matter how far we think we’ve strayed.

There is nothing you can do that will stop God from loving you.
