I’m devastated. So many r cheering Aemond on for burning Aegon but not I.

Aegon’s whole life was destined for nothing but absolute pain.

Alicent attempted to brainwash Aegon into hating Rhaenyra for taking his birthright she herself brainwashed into it by Otto- CURSE U OTTO forced a crown on his head even though he begged an Aemond in pursuit of him to let him run away Was wed to his “weird” sister who he loves? but is not in love with they then had CHILDREN, children who he tried to show love in the way that his father never showed him& in thanks for all that love he showed he lost one to a BEHEADING.

No one takes him seriously, no one loves him except for sunfyre UGH WHICH MAKES IT ALL THAT MUCH SADDER I CAN NOT or shows him any love- even though he desperately craves it& asks for it

&now even (“To be loved or feared?” , “I need to be both.  My mother and grandsire mind me like some helpless duckling.” , “Oh, well, you’re the king.  Who gives a shit what they say?” , “My brother, at least, knows his place.  He’s as loyal as a hound.  I can set him and his dragon on my foes at will.”)AEMOND has betrayed him. 

Horribly scarred from this, he will be.  emotionally…physically +… based on the books it gets much worse for him from here 

So heartbroken.  I don’t think I understood how gigantic of an Aegond shipper I was till this moment.

It’ll be great for Aegond fanfic in terms of angst &as a viewer I am intrigued to see what Aemond will do with his newfound power

..but all the ships in Team Green other than helaemond who may thrive with Aemond in the power position r being held together by very thin string.

Meanwhile Team Black ships are doing… pretty alright I thought youngRhaenyra would be a 1 episode phantom but I think she’s going to be haunting Daemon the whole season which is cool, I like that despite their distance she is always firm in his mind so that at least makes me happy but still MY WEEPING MAY NEVER CEASE!

I have such a weird relationship with House of the Dragon. I have all of these ships, but I know everything is going to hell. Relationships will only become more strained, and presumably almost everyone of note dies within the scope of the story. So instead of enjoying it, except for a scene here and there, I mostly just watch it with dread. 

Tom Glynn-Carney is doing such a fantastic job as Aegon. Everyone is always praising him in the YouTube reviews I watch, because he is doing such a great job of humanizing Aegon, when he might otherwise have been a Joffrey-like character, someone you can’t stand or even love to hate. But I think it’s also in the writing in season 2 in a way that it wasn’t as much in season 1. Those moments with his son, and his grief, and I really feel for him in his moments of insecurity, too. I like him, and care about him, a lot more than I did in season 1. 

I definitely didn’t rejoice when he got burned, and I never like to see siblings not caring whether their siblings live or die.

It does hurt, knowing how betrayed he’ll feel by Aemond, the one he trusted as loyal, the one he invited onto the council because of his loyalty. 

Admittedly, Aemond/Alicent and Aemond/Helaena are some of my top ships for this show, so I am excited about what this change will bring in terms of interactions between them. We’ve had to wait half a season for even a crumb.

I do like that even though Daemon and Rhaenyra are apart, we continue to have Daemon/Rhaenyra scenes.

Can I just sing the praises of a bunch of shows on Disney Junior?

One of the best is Doc McStuffins. Not only is the main character a positive role model for little girls, the family is black and the father is a house husband, but they don’t overemphasize it. It teaches a lot of important stuff without being preachy, including being healthy, taking good care of your pets and belongings, and the basics of being a good doctor. All the while the characters are all really cute with great personalities, lots of funny dialogue, great songs, and good quality animation.

Another really cool one is The Octonauts. I’m a sucker for cute talking animals, but what surprised me was how action-packed this show is. The characters really get into some intense danger- probably as intense as you can get in a Y-rated show this side of MLP. Another thing that impresses me is how the animators manage to get so many expressions out of such simplistic designs.

I suspect Disney wanted in on the cute animals with bulbous heads having adventures thing, and made Sheriff Callie’s Wild West as an American equivalent to Octonauts. I like westerns and country and folk music, and putting a whimsical spin on western tropes is fun. The songs are really good too.

Goldie & Bear is fun too, especially since I really like fairy tales. I love how the songs are all inspired by 1960s pop music, especially doo-wop. The character design is great, and you can tell Jim Cummings is having a blast playing the Big Bad Wolf.

P. King Duckling, while a very mild show, is often funny and surprisingly modern in the way it effortlessly integrates smartphones and the internet into its stories.

While Elena of Avalor is technically on the Disney Channel, it’s still Y-rated so that’s why I’m including it. I happen to be one quarter Mexican on my parternal grandmother’s side, and while I haven’t found the time to deeply explore Hispanic culture as much as I’d like, it’s great to see a cartoon, particularly one in the fantasy genre, so very much inspired by Latin American stuff.

I do really like Sofia the First as well, but admittedly I’m a little burnt out on it since a few too many episodes focus on mundane things like tea parties, ballet and camping.

great question HJDFKJDS I don't think I'll be able to make everyone fit into each role very neatly though :O because of many, many technicalities such as: pacifica is closer to, say, cassandra and dipper is a bit more believable as varian but they're current roles are as rapunzel and eugene, the overall existence of the stan brothers, pacifica's actual parents being more believable as gothel than as the king and queen etc. etc. etc.

BUT the nice thing about aus is the improvization and adaptation!! i don't know how much i'll be able to actually ponder on it drawing-wise before my next break but i can tell you i'm not gonna be following canon religiously cause that would not fit with the characters we have inserted into this universe

ah also, i might be disregarding part of the series canon from the finale of s2 til the end of the series oops - i've been in the fandom since 2018 before s2 was even out so i have. a lot of opinions on some things lol esp since i saw them happen in real time and have been active in discussions about them

gonna put it under a [keep reading] cause it's a lot - never ask me about my opinions or ideas i have too many always forever and i will talk your ears off about them if given the opportunity

so i already established that pacifica fills rapunzel's general role and dipper fills eugene's, but i never specified if i was gonna follow canon much or not ;) well i'm gonna be moving some stuff around

remember lance strongbow? and how he's very much not there in the movie cause him and eugene separated and only reunited in season 1 of the series?

well that's mabel's overall role, minus some of the separation and obv her own personality dsfhjds

i'm not gonna poke the series much yet in this post but movie-wise, my plan is for mabel and dipper to both be thieves, running away from the royal guards cause they stole the crown

no maximus involved unfortunately

they split up and make the guards think mabel has the crown so that they follow her, but in reality the crown's with dipper who ends up at the tower where pacifica convinces him to take her to the lanterns

and they meet again when they've almost reached the kingdom - around where rapunzel and eugene met maximus again

so yeah mabel's gonna be more prominent than lance or max ended up being canonically JFSFKL (even though i'm so sad lance in particular didn't end up doing that much... lance my beloved why would they do that to you)

also mabel will end up filling most of cassandra's role as rapunzel's best friend cause i love mabel and pacifica as best friends they're very good sue me

wendy's gonna be more or less filling cassandra's role as the daughter of the royal guard, b u t

one, i already established that mabel's gonna be the best friend so wendy will still be a friend! just not as close to pacifica as cassandra was to rapunzel

and two, I'm definitely not keeping Moonsandra's motivations in mind and none of the whole moonsandra drama

could wendy take the moonstone? yeah but she's not gonna become a villain from it unless i involve actual corruption in there which. is an idea but i haven't thought far enough to consider it properly yet lol so

(i love moonsandra but i just can't view her as the same character cassandra was, and in relation to wendy i feel like that just would Not work)

soos is gonna be a member of the royal guard (think - stan and pete), but his overall presence in the story is gonna be closer to shorty, not in his contributions but in how often he appears DJDSLK

shorty is in like every episode it's insane, he's everywhere

candy and grenda might be ladies in waiting too but i think they could also be from the snuggly duckling since they can't NOT be mabel's best friends

aaand that's everyone i'm p much certain on

i don't know who mother gothel could be - pacifica's parents in canon are closer to gothel than to fred and arianna but making them the latter would mean there would be a lot of drama and angst which would be interesting to explore :O however mother gothel could also be the witch lady that stole hands, yknow the one - but that might be confusing so hhh?

and i also don't know who the stans might be - i could make quirin stanley and king edmund stanford, but in that case i would have to figure out if dipper and mabel ran away from home, if they are orphans, or if stanley will become an accidental father figure in their lives dsifjdsndsd

and what would gideon be doing? could he be related to saporia? how would he get involved with bill? could he be a disciple? or should he fill varian's initial role of season 1 villain

there's a lot to consider : O and i haven't had a lot of time to REALLY think about it all lol

and that's uh all my thoughts so far lmao if you got this far i am impressed sdjfkjl i rambled a lot

Like I’m gonna be real wit y’all I was looking forward to le Comte for a while, but I was always side-eyeing Jeanne. He’s a blunt hermit and grump and 100% mood, so I hoped his route would give me more insight into how I feel about him.

Ladies. When I tell you. It was EXCELLENT. I mean there are so many gr9 routes in the game, I don’t want to take away from them, but there was just something about his that hit me so hard???? (MY KOKORO BROKORO)

More under the cut since his route won’t be out for a little while (we still got Isaac, then Theo, then Jeanne), as a little treat. As usual, pls don’t read if you don’t want spoilers, thanks!

Okay so going into this route I was fully expecting the big sads. I mean, if history has taught us anything it was that Joan D’Arc was a badass but good lord, that doesn’t mean the people of her time were kind to her. (I need to do more thorough research on her, so if I’m getting any of her pronouns wrong or neglect something, I do apologize.)

That being sad, I was like aight DECK MY SHIT WITH TRAGEDY, JEANNE. And at the beginning it’s p fascinating. He’s very ornery and resistant to any kind of consideration or attempts at friendship MC extends. But eventually, after a good deal of persistence, he relents little by little.

I’d also like to level with y’all for a sec. Being someone who knows a great deal in regards to the kinds of mental and emotional shit Jeanne struggles through, I think they handled that part of the route so, so well. Granted, I’m not the kind of person to launch a crusade over different writing styles--but for me it just feels all the more poignant when it makes sense; when certain dispositions or trauma are conveyed with that depth. To me, it made 100% sense that Jeanne would be so against accepting other people into his life immediately.

He and Mozart vibe because they’re so similar, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s comfortable letting just anyone in--much less a complete stranger. I think it’s more that Mozart and Jeanne share a kind of indelible bond/mutual recognition through their talent, actually. They were both prodigies, absolute geniuses in their fields (military vs. music) but their social skills were shot to hell for the very same reason. To be brilliant--beyond one’s potential posthumous legacy--tends to mean being hated. Plus, they’re both principled to absolute extremes. When they’ve decided on something, they will not waver. They’re stubborn and austere, but behind those walls lies a molten core of sensitivity.

This is important to understanding him, I think, before I move forward.

While one could argue that their reaction is a result of that deficiency of emotional and social support (which I entirely concede does contribute to the matter at hand, it shouldn’t be overlooked) I think the real crux of the matter here is control. Think about it. Among the oldest residents in the mansion (let’s say that were born more than 100 years within the range of the present period of the game) are Mozart, Jeanne, Isaac, and Shakespeare. What do they all have in common?

Extremity. For Mozart, it comes in the form of a kind of OCD, as perfectionism. For Jeanne, it is generalized anxiety and PTSD. For Isaac, it is primarily social anxiety--but it’s still noticeably severe. And Shakespeare runs around with a knife, insecurity through the roof, literally unable to trust anything or anyone (psychosis? schizoaffective? I’m really not sure, these are all ballpark assessments based on the evidence I have). In order to adjust to their new surroundings, there was a cost--and in some ways their coping mechanisms become noticeably maladaptive. They were born into eras that were mercilessly unpredictable, and the only way they knew how to cope was to was to either take the blame--make it a personal failing that tragedy struck--or try to immerse themselves into their craft. They all seek to regain some kind of control (this is even visible in Vincent, to a degree--painting was an escape from his emotionally turbulent world).

Granted that’s not to say that the others don’t struggle with such issues at all, I just feel like the characters from more unstable time periods tend (as a general trend) to mirror that instability within their personalities.

All that being said, (I apologize I am a tangent-monger and love meta), Jeanne’s self-imposed isolation is only partially caused by the above dynamic. Yes, he is unwilling to let people into his heart for fear of betrayal. (It’s almost like an entire nation clamoring to watch you burn for something you didn’t do after spending your entire life and talents trying to protect them would do that to you, but I digress >:| ). But there’s another devastating and potentially less obvious reason for keeping people out.

He thinks he deserves it.

Loneliness, melancholy, aimlessness. These are all the punishments that he incurred on himself after a life of what he conceives to be considerable sin (hahaha battlefield enemies go ripppp). Whether or not he was operating purely out of a sense of duty, even if he felt sympathy for his enemy combatants, it’s not enough. And the condemnation of his king, of his entire nation, only served to magnify that self-loathing to a dangerous degree. (Don’t get me started on his parents I’m still so angry >:| they more or less disowned him since he was constitutionally weak as a young boy, and thus could not serve as an adequate farmhand. Don’t work? Don’t eat/live).

It’s hard enough living in a reserved way because you’re afraid of getting hurt, but to think that you deserve it when hurt finds you, no less? And my favorite part, that he’s so profoundly sure that it is an extension of a personal, fundamental failing? That for a person to survive, they must be strong, that there can be no other way--that there is no time or space for ruminations on fairness or unfairness, there are only those who manage to survive and those who die.

Now my friends, esteemed comrades, legendary sluts. Is that enough for us, Cybird asks, are we feeling enough pain quite yet? Fuck no.

Most of his route after we get over the hurdle of his hesitation is just him. Being. Bashful and gentle as all FUCK. Like he is the definition of “I'll kill you, but also I’m babie.” For instance, she insists on teaching him how to read and write at night when she finds him trying (and not succeeding) to read “The Ugly Duckling”. Yes I mean the children’s book. I CRIED THE FIRST TIME AND I’M CRYING NOW. So, naturally, MC buys him a notebook to practice with and he puts his name in big letters on the front. When MC sees this, she asks him about it--wondering why he would given he’s so self-conscious of his own writing (boy writes all squiggly like a little kid because he’s never done it before ;-;).

The scene goes a little something like this:

MC: Wh....whatcha go there Jeanne? Jeanne: ? My notebook? MC: I...mean that you wrote your name on it? Jeanne: Yeah? MC: Why? Jeanne: ._. It was a gift from you, and I figured it'd be hard to practice if I lost it...so I put my name on it... (HE WAS SECRETLY TOUCHED I BET AND IM--) MC: Why such big letters? Jeanne: So people can spot it quickly, obviously MC, inches from crying and laughing: Jeanne: Mademoiselle??? Why are you laughing? MC: Because you’re cute, Jeanne!

Like. They start out so rocky and Jeanne is so SIGH. I guess I’ll agree if it’ll get her to stop looking so sad and ask me to join her for stuff. But then he just can’t help but go full softe at how patient and kind she is, starts feeling comfortable just...being who he is deep down. A man that’s always hoped for better in life, a person that only ever takes up his sword to protect--that has an incredibly pure and clear heart, despite so much pain.

And good lord, they are GOD TIER romantic slow burn???? Swear to everything holy, I was BEGGING for them to make out by like chapter 10, I was just suffering for most of the route until the bangarang premium. Here’s probably my favorite moment in the entire route:

Basically Sebastian and Mozart pull out all the stops trying to bring Jeanne and MC together (once they see Jeanne show some interested in her). And so Jeanne asks her to join him in the courtyard the next morning, and they’re playing with Cherie (Jeanne’s pet baby white tiger). Besides being ungodly adorable--because Jeanne invited her for the sole purpose of hoping to see her delightfully surprised--Mozart begins to play a love song nearby. They don’t name the tune, but Jeanne canonically starts singing along (I wholeass cried, I WANT TO HEAR HIM SING????). And so she asks what the song is about, and he explains that Mozart once played it for him, but he couldn’t make out the words at first. Mozart explained that it was a love song that speaks to the difficulties of being in love (the worry, the strife) but also the beauty of the intensity and passion. He goes on to say that even when he learned the words, it never made much sense to him back then--it never resonated.

He’s singing softly with a fond look, and so she asks, does he understand it now? And he looks her dead in the eye, and says “...I think I’m starting to.” Like. AM I SUPPOSED TO NOT LOSE MY MIND AT THE TENDERNESS????? WHAT A SMOOTH MOFO????? MAN RAISED TO BE A SOLDIER, NO KNOWLEDGE OF ROMANCE OR WOMEN, AND KILLS ME IN MILLISECONDS?????? I DEMAND JUSTICE. (Or it’s just me thinking sincerity is the best aphrodisiac, but that’s beside the point.)

Summary:  Nightmare senses an intense burst of negativity and goes to investigate.

Nightmare pauses for a moment, while addressing Hatchet, Killer, and Dust, a small frown appearing on his face as he feels a strange tugging sensation on his soul. He's not sure why such a thing is occurring, and while the tugging sensation isn't painful... It very nearly is. He feels a huge crash of Negativity moments later, and as the power pools around him, the dark king can't help but wonder why and who is feeling so powerfully. He has completely forgotten what it was he had been telling his closest minions, and is trying desperately to not seem as if he spaced off for no reason. 

"Boss, are you alright? You seem a bit... Off?" Hatchet asks - who has been working for him the longest, and is the least terrified he will strangle the other if he asks after how he is doing and processing things.

Nightmare sighs and murmurs "Something... Unusual just happened - and there has been a large spike in negativity - but I feel as if it is coming from a singular source, rather than a timeline. I'm trying to pinpoint where the person is." He concentrates for several moments, his eye lights flickering out for a couple of moments, as he pinpoints where in the multiverse this person is, honing in on their grief, horror, distress and... Interestingly enough, betrayal. "I will be back shortly, likely with a new recruit." He teleports away, finding himself in a timeline that is almost completely achromatic.

There are hints of gold and violet in the flowers, on the field he is standing in, and there are a circle of mortals - an Undyne, Alphys, Papyrus, Mettaton, Gaster (interestingly enough - they tend to fade away into nothing fairly early on in their timelines), the royal family... He sees a very familiar brown scarf and rolls his eye light, wondering what - 

"I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT YOU'VE GONE ALONG WITH THIS, INK? WHAT... WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? CAN'T... CAN'T YOU SEE HOW WRONG THIS IS?" Dream of all beings screamed, his voice raw and cracked with emotion.

Nightmare finds himself walking - no running, and sure enough, in the center of this circle of people is Dream, protectively holding onto the Chara and Frisk of the timeline,  and the sans of the timeline is  peeking over one of Dream's shoulders, tall and gangly and at once nervous, tense and confused. 

"You don't understand Dream. Now if you could please, put XFrisk and XChara down, and lower your shield, you, me and XGaster can talk things out. I'm sure that you'll get i-"

"Enough is enough, old friend." The unusually pointy and bulky looking Gaster murmured, his eyes flashing a dark, royal purple "I do not know who this is, but he is interfering with our experiments and I will not stand it. He has been shouting at us for the past fifteen minutes, and I am tired of it. As you cannot seem to get him to calm down, I am going to end this." He lifts a clawed hand, as a purple something flickers in his hands. 

Nightmare would normally lean back and laugh at whatever misfortune Dream had gotten himself into - but there is something about that button that the ancient memories that she had gifted him with scream out in warning. Something actually dangerous to the two of them. "Oh, I don't think so." Nightmare growled just loud enough to get the group to turn towards the two of them.

Their shock, confusion and surprise is entertaining enough to see, and he teleports directly between the Gaster and Dream - who is still maintaining his bubble shield, shaky though it appears to be (likely due to his own negativity - dumbass). Before any of them can react, he sends two tentacles directly through the Gaster's soul - curiously enough it is purple, rather than the standard white of a monster's soul. He is fascinated, and as it fractures, he grabs the two halves and shoves them into a couple of containment vials, corking the unusual soul and putting them into his inventory. The Gaster dusts, sputtering and shaking, ordering the others to attack.

As soon as the Gaster finishes dusting, the color returns to each of the mortals, before they collapse to the ground, shaking and gasping as they too... Fade into nothingness. OF the dozen or so beings who had been from this strange timeline - as it too, fades into nothing - only the Chara, Frisk and Sans have survived, perhaps protected by Dream's shield. The look of confused shock on Dream's face transforms into fear and horror as his lighter half yells "NIGHT LEFT!"

He dodges left, as instructed, for some reason - and is glad he did, as a furious Ink sent a wave of paint his way. "Give me back those vials. This AU depends on the Gaster existing in order for it to exist!"

"He's... He's lying!" The Chara cried out "It's not XGaster, but the power within his soul! Please... P-Please don't let him bring that bastard back! I-I don't know wh-who you are... B-But please help us!"

Nightmare hummed, curious about that statement, but for now he had a furious soulless creature to deal with first "I want answers to the questions that come from that - but first I have to deal with Ink." He dodges the creative guardian's attacks, launching his own at the other.

"How the fuck did you find this place?" Ink demanded, his eye lights flashing through shapes and colors continuously - unhappy colors. 

"Why, I sensed Dream's feelings of your complete and utter betrayal and followed them to this... AU. But I have questions and you have upset Dream far too much already. Away you go. Have fun with the tricksters, Ink." Nightmare answers back, smirking as he opens a portal directly beneath Ink's feet as he yanks the other's brush from him, shoving him into the Tricksterfell - that should keep him long enough to move these four. He blinks for a moment and stumbles backwards as his wounds - a surprising amount - hit him all at once.

Dream's barrier falls as the lighter guardian rushes over to him, catching him before he hit the ground "Nightmare! Nightmare, you... You can't... Please... Please be okay!" Healing magic rolls from Dream and into him in worried waves.

Nightmare chuckles softly, reaching up  and gently caressing one of the other's cheeks as strength returns to him "I am fine, better now by your healing... I would very much like to know what is going on here, and what Ink did to upset you so terribly. I did warn you that he would do something truly awful. He is soulless, and they always prove to be... Capricious at best."

"I... I know... But he... He's been determined to help protect the AUs... I'd hoped that he'd... He'd stick to that, but he..." Dream stutters out, tears flowing fast and bright down his cheeks "He's done awful things to these people... and I... I don't know wh-what to do, o-or if I c-can fix it..."

"Ah, Dream... Ever determined to help as many as you can. Why don't you and your protective ducklings - yes I can see the way the three of you are pouting at me - come home with me? Then we can sort out what happened, at least from what they know, figure out what to do with the Gaster's soul. I am fine. Any damage they inflicted, you've healed."

Dream nods, shaking a little and pressing into his touch, hiccuping a little. "A-Alright..."

"Uhm. Not to be rude, because Thank you for killing that bastard. Truly. But. Who the fuck are you?" The Chara asked, as the Frisk sighed and the Sans winced and buried his face in his hands.

"My name is Nightmare, I rule a large swathe of the multiverse. Ink is likely to return to this place once he escapes the tricksters - which he inevitably will. Do you want him to find you here when he does?" The lord of negativity pointed out, utterly amused by the young one's growling. Baby determination mages are adorable.

"... No. But... Uhm... The power contained in that soul belongs to us, to this AU, if you would please give it to one of us so that we can recreate our world, we'd be very grateful..." The Frisk spoke up, hope in their voice.

"Hmm... Not quite yet, for a number of reasons. One of which being that purple attack or whatever the Gaster was about to try to use on Dream is dangerous - I could sense it, which was one of the reasons why I intervened as precipitously and with deadly force. Now, shall we leave?" Nightmare prompts, opening a portal.

The three mortals sigh and nod, heading through to his castle. Dream takes a couple of hesitant steps forwards before asking quietly "May... May I come too?"

"Of course, as long as you don't start trouble on purpose, Dream." Nightmare murmurs with a small smile.

Dream nods silently and enters, looking worried and shaken.

Happy Pride! .... Like... more than halfway through the month lmao sorry, better late than never ig! I’ve compiled a list of some of my fave LGBT+ books, as well as a few I’m planning to read for pride/in the near future. Please feel free to reblog and add some of your own recs, especially for the sexual and gender identities that are lacking in my list!!!!!

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz: This beautiful, wholesome coming of age novel is pretty popular on tumblr and with good reason! It’s set in the 1980′s and follows Aristotle, aka "Ari”, as he grows up an tackles with his identity-- he feels like his story is written by someone else, that his path is not up to his control. Whether this is due to his complex relationship with his family, or societal expectations/stereotypes of Latinx men, or the fact that maybe his friendship with Dante might be more than that, and that kinda terrifies him. (Rep: Gay, Latinx, (I believe this is own voices) Warnings: it’s been a minute since i’ve read this but i believe some racism, internalized homophobia, and an instance of violent transphobia)

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: LGKNLKNGRG okay this is truly one of my favorite books of the year so far and part of the whole reason i wanted to make this. This is a New Adult Contemporary romance set in sort of a like... parallel America where a woman won the presidential election. We follow The First Son, Alex Claremont-Diaz, who’s charming, smart ass, genius icon. Him, his sister June, and their best friend Nora are easily marketable and loved by the public for the most part, but when Alex and his rival Prince Henry of England get into a public spat at a Royal Wedding, Alex and Henry must pretend to be friends to patch up relations and public image for his mother’s re-election campaign. Eventually their fake friendship turns real, and then becomes more as they get to know each other, Alex and Henry begin a secret romance that we follow over the course of the re-election year. This book is fucking HILARIOUS (like I have so many tabs for funny moments and i was trying to be restrained), but it’s just so. Like full of love and hope and it’s so beautiful???? It’s definitely political escapism from our current situation in America but still deals with current issues such as racism and homopboia, etc, but gives the reader hope for future progress. Alex and Henry’s relationship is so fun, and sexy, and beautiful and the friendships are so iconic and Alex’s journey with sexuality is... chefs kiss. Also like. Casey McQuiston mentioned that she listened to Texas Reznikoff by Mitski a lot while writing this in the acknowledgments so. what more do you need... (Rep: Bisexual (Own Voices), Gay, Biracial-- Mexican/White (Own Voices), Warnings: Racism, homophobia, mentions of a past sexual harrassment/assault. Since this is a New Adult, there are smut scenes. I wouldn’t say it’s like. Super explicit or anything but there is sex, though it’s often during Important Moments of their relationships so it doesn’t feel like p*rn-- again the sex is happening but its not in hella explicit detail or anything or for the same goal as say an erotica. P much proceed with caution if it’s not ur thing but it’s not too wild!)

Blanca y Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore: This is sort of a Snow White/Rose Red and Ugly Duckling retelling following two sisters, Blanca and Roja, who’s family curse destines that one of the sisters will be trapped into a swan’s body, never to be seen again. (So this is magical realism lmao). We also follow two boys, Page and Yearling, who were wrapped up in the magic of the nearby woods, but have returned to society. Page is a gender queer trans male, and his whole arc that was so beautiful and made me cry, but in a good way (also warning that I’m cis so like. I would love to hear what gender queer trans individuals think about the rep in this book bc I cannot really attest to it.) This book is really about sisterly love and love in general, with all the complexities that come with it. (also wlw grandma’s who grow apple’s it’s p iconic) (Rep: Latinx-- colorism plays a huge role in the story as well (Own Voices), Gender Queer Trans, Queer (Own Voices) Warnings: Some transphobia, racism, and abuse). (I believe most of Anna-Marie McLemore’s books are magical realism and have some Latinx and queer elements to them as well)

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller: god..... This (gay ass) novelization of The Illiad is just so tragically romantic and beautiful... We follow Achilles and Patroclus as they grow up and grow closer, and eventually fight the Trojan War. There are so many beautiful quotes and scenes but like. You will most likely cry so keep that in mind eklrgerg. (Rep: Gay Warnings: Violence, there’s like..... a weird r*pe/homophobic scene)

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan: YA Fantasy set in a world where there are three castes: Moon-- the highest caste, demons with animalistic features in a humanoid form, Steel-- humans with part demon physical features and abilities, and Paper-- fully human, the lowest caste. We follow our protaganist Lei, who despite being a Paper caste, has beautiful golden glowing eyes that end up garnering attention from the Demon King. She’s stolen from her home and forced to join The Paper Girls-- a group of paper caste concubines in training at the palace. As she tries to find a way to escape, she ends up falling for one of the other paper girls, Wren, who might be just the key to freedom. I love Lei and Wren’s relationship and I’m excited to see it play out in the sequel! (which i believe ngan said will introduce more LGBT characters) (Rep: Asian (Own Voices), WLW (I believe this is Own Voices as well). Warnings: As their role as concubines suggest, a large part of this book revolves around the patriarchy using women for power and sexual assualt/rape. There are no explicit rape scenes-- though they do occur ‘off screen’, however there are a couple attempted sexual assault scenes that I believe could be p triggering. This book is also largely about the Paper Girls taking back their power, and I don’t believe these scenes are done for shock value, however please proceed with caution. Subsequently, sexist and patriarchial views are present within the authority, though shunned by Lei, however there’s a lot of internalized sexism and objectification among some of the other Paper Girls.)

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell: I probably don’t have to talk about this one much since it’s super popular, but in what is like essentially Harry Potter but like gay and wholesome, we follow Simon Snow, the Chosen One who’s actually not that good at magic, his best friend Penelope, and his roommate and arch nemesis that’s totally a vampire but won’t admit it, Baz. (Except Baz is, like, totally in love with Simon and Simon’s just too dumb and wrapped up in his own shit to realize it). Truly just,... an iconic enemies to friends to lovers story that unfolds as the three of them try to uncover a mystery surrounding Baz’s late mother. Ik some people have found it confusing bc it’s sort of like starting the Harry Potter story off at book 7 and only getting some background info along the way but honestly I really enjoyed that lmao. Also there’s a sequel coming out this fall, Wayward Son. (Rep: Gay, Some POC rep. Warnings: not rlly any i dont think??? There’s  like. some Homophobia lmao bc we can’t have a gay book without it.)

Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins: This is a cute YA contemporary following Millie Quint who, post being cheated on by her best friend and wanting to have a fresh start, flies to Scotland to finish off her senior year at her Dream prestigous boarding school, joining a handful of other girls as the first female class in the institution’s history. Plus like. Cool Rocks and Scotland. Only problem is that her roomate is sort of a bitch and also the Princess of Scotland who she totally just told off. So yeah yet another royal gay enemies to friends to lovers with a dash of and they were roomates LMAO. This book could be like.... a bit cheesy and rushed but overall it was cute and like...... The Cover.... (Rep: Bisexual, Lesbian, Warnings: Some homophobia. Also this is a companion novel to Prince Charming but you don’t have to read that first, there’s just some references to the couple in that book as the Prince is well.... The Princess’ brother and where they end up so if you don’t wanna be spoiled read that first ig!)

The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman: I talked about this some in this post, but I feel like I did kinda a shitty job so. A YA fantasy/paranormal series about the descendant’s of the town’s four founding families-- Violet Saunders, Justin Hawthorne, Harper Carlisle, and Isaac Sullivan (the most iconic one). The latter three have lived in Four Paths their whole lives, protecting the town from The Gray-- p much the Upside Down from Stranger Things lmao, using powers specific to each of their families. Violet and her mother move back after Violet’s sister died in a car accident, and she’s thrust into helping save the town as the Gray grows more restless and having to uncover the secrets of her family as well as all the history brewing between the other three. The Stranger Things and Riverdale comparisons are p valid, (but like. Riverdale in the sense of small town secrets and a bunch of tense history that the kids don’t really understand and must uncover, and some like love triangle but..... not Rlly Love triangles just a mess of ppl being like oh shit i like this person and this person.... Bisexual Chaos if u will... not like. The I’m cuckoo bananas for u let’s go get high and play dungeons and dragons and smash in a bunker LRGKJRLKGJ), the Raven Cycle comparison’s are kind of a stretch, I can see the abstract comparison’s if i squint but like. Don’t go into this expecting TRC lmao. I really enjoyed the theme of grief throughout this book and seeing the powers unfold (and one of the dynamics a lot) and while not perfect the series has a lot of potential and like. Bisexuals. So. (Rep: Bisexual (two mc’s are bi and say the word!!!!!!!! As well as some secondary characters), Disabled (one of the mc’s is missing one arm from the elbow down). Warnings: Grief, Violence)

The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee: Also talked about this in this post and did a better job there, but to sum it up it’s essentially a friends to lovers, bed sharing, road trip au with a dash of magic but set in the 1700′s! There’s also a sequel/companion, The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy that I have yet to read but it follows Monty’s sister, Felicity, and I believe goes more in depth with her identity. (Rep: Gay, Black, Disabled, Aromantic, Asexual, Warnings: Period typical homophobia/biphobia, racism, ableism, sexism)

Simon vs. The Homosapien’s Agenda by Becky Albertalli: Like. I don’t think i really have to explain this one LRKGJJRG but added it just in case. YA contemporary following Simon as he e-mails another gay student at his school and falls in love. (Rep: Gay, Black, Jewish, Warnings: Homophobia)

All For the Game Trilogy (The Foxhole Court, The Raven King, The King’s Men) by Nora Sakavic: If y’all have been on my blog at all you know i’m back in aftg hyperfixation mode after another reread lmao. Is it a lil messy is it a lil dramatic... yes. but i love it!!! We follow our protagonist Neil Josten, who’s been on the run from his crime lord father, The Butcher of Baltimore, since he was young. After his mother dies on the run, Neil finds a new place and adopts yet another identity, and ends up playing high school exy (a made up sport but like we’re barely here for the sports lmao), something he used to play as a child. Despite playing a new position, he attracts the attention of the PSU Foxes, who’s coach David Wymack specifically recruits players with a troubled past to give them a second chance. Neil really shouldn’t sign-- it goes against everything his mother told him, it puts him at risk of being in the spotlight for his father’s men to find him, and puts him on the same team as Kevin Day, someone from his past that knows his true identity. Still, something draws Neil to joining the team, to finally try to live instead of just survive. UGHHHH like truly this book just makes u fall in love with all the characters and the beautiful and broken found family that develops over three books and one of the most iconic and amazing (ha....) slowburn relationships ever.... Also if i recall they’re super cheap on iBooks (at least when i bought them, the first book was free and the other two were $1.99). (Rep: Gay, Demisexual, POC, Warnings: MAJOR trigger warnings for like. everything bc all the foxes have fucked up pasts. But the biggest ones are probably rape, abuse/torture, and substance abuse)

Six of Crows Duology (Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom) by Leigh Bardugo: Idk how much I really have to talk about this bc it’s popular but I am physically unably not to reccomend this duology bc its just. So. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. The most barebones summary is that this is a YA Fantasy about six people coming together to perform an impossible heist. This is truly like...... a masterclass in developing characters and has one of the best m/f ships i’ve ever read... But also since it’s on here there is some gay shit going on, 3/6 mains are Not Straight and there’s a cute m/m couple! Also you don’t have to read the Grisha Trilogy to read this but u can if u want (I have yet to). (Rep: Bisexual, Gay, Disabled, POC, Warnings: Again these ppl have fucked up pasts, biggest are PTSD, past sexual abuse)

The Raven Cycle Series (The Raven Boys, The Dream Theives, Blue Lily Lily Blue, The Raven King) by Maggie Steifvater: Again i don’t think I really have to explain this one but like. In case you haven’t read this series it’s truly iconic..... Idk even how to explain this LKGJLJRG just like magical realism wonderfulness and found family and amazing relationships and shit.... (Rep: Gay, Bisexual, Disabled, Warnings: Abuse)

The following are books I plan to read for pride/in the near future. I can’t wholeheartedly reccomend them obviously, or fully detail all the rep/warnings, but I’ve heard some great things about these books and a lot of them have representation that the first part of the list is lacking, so I figured I would add them! (Also if I use ‘queer’ that’s because that’s the only label I have been given by the authors or reviewers, or the characters identify as queer)

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman: To my knowledge this is a really emotional YA coming of age/college story that has to do with like. A podcast? Idk a lot of people love it and side note I’ll be suing B&N bc they NEVER have it relkj (Rep: Bisexual, Demisexual, I belive Latinx.)

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand: I believe this is a YA horror-ish novel where there’s a monster stealing girls on and island. (Rep: I believe all three main girls are queer Warnings: Since this is horror im assuming. Horror stuff LMAO)

I Wish You all The Best by Mason Deaver: A YA contemporary romance about Ben who comes out as non-binary to their parents and gets kicked out, and moves in with their estranged sister. They soon are taken under the wing of a senior named Nathan Allan and begin to fall. (Rep: Non-Binary (Own Voices), MLM/Queer, Black (im assuming from the gorgeous cover lmao. Warnings: Misgendering, homophobia, anxiety, depression)

Summer of Salt by Katrina Leno: YA Magical Realism about Georgina, who has yet to inherit the magical powers that have been passed down her family, including her twin sister Mary who, unlike Georgina, is coming into her powers. (Rep: Lesbian, Queer, Aro/Ace, Warnings: Rape and sexual assault, underage drinking, animal death, drug use.)
