There are a lot of things my mom and I disagree on, politically speaking. She's a Putin sympathizer, I think US, EU and Russia are all full of imperialistic bullshit. But there is one thing we both seem to agree on. And that's the fact that the sudden attention a Eastern European conflict is getting... is very hypocritical, not even in a global context. We were both citizens of Moldova when we came to Romania. And we were both treated like shit before getting our romanian citizenship. I was bullied in school for my nationality, my accent, the terms I was using (some of them russian or a mashup between romanian and russian). My mother had to struggle just to get a job because she was treated as inferior, not worthy of more than a housekeeper job, even though she worked as a university teacher in Moldova and she had a higher education.
Anyway, we were talking today about Ukraine and Transnistria. And how suddenly people are very worried about our family in Transnistria. Their situation has not actually changed much from before the war in Ukraine. They were still in danger of being killed there even before this, they were still in danger of not being able to leave Transnistria for no actual reason even before the war. The only thing that changed is that in addition to fearing maybe being shot one day, now they also fear a full scale war (again). The same people who never gave a shit about us and marginalized us, now suddenly care about our family. The same people who only saw us as human beings after we got our citizenship, are suddenly concerned about a place they completely overlooked before. We were just a subject of jokes before all this.
