Later in the run, the production had to resort to pulling future cast members out of rehearsals and onto the stage. Collette Guitart, who was set to officially join the production as a swing on August 20th, performed 7 shows in three different roles prior to her start date: Aragon on August 15th, Boleyn on August 1st, 6th, 11th, and 17th, and Seymour on July 30th and August 9th. Her costume wasn’t completed for most of this time, so she wore Millie’s old Boleyn costume for that role and a band costume for the rest (like former emergency covers had). Zara MacIntosh and Hana Stewart, both cast as alternates in the 2019-20 production, had early debuts as well; Zara performed one show as Howard on September 15th and Hana one show as Seymour on September 21st.

This cast is also the only to have switched the first covers of their alternates during the run; a few months after opening Courtney Stapleton and Grace Mouat switched first covers from A/P and S/H to S/P and A/H, respectively. Later, when Grace left the production, Shekinah McFarlane joined as alternate A/C and Vicki switched her first covers from B/C to B/H.

If Grace and Courntey decided to go Seymour/Aragon and Howard/Parr instead, do you think the costumes would have changed much if at all? Think Zara and Hana would have had different covers, or if Pink would have been updated slightly differently?

Costumes definitely would have changed! Grace Mouat as A/S probably would have meant something more like her initial UK Tour costume, with the full open skirt and longer bodice rather than a crop. I’d guess her costume still would have been black. Courtney Stapleton as H/P would probably be a cropped bodice but no idea what they would have gone for for bottoms. No idea on color either, but orange was originally from Aragon so definitely wouldn’t have kept that. In theory it might have been a purple? Gabriella Slade has said she won’t do a purple alt costume since it’s the shows promo color but hard to know when that rule came into place. (Also, shameless plug for @lightleckrereins’ designs for A/S and H/P.)

I don’t think Zara MacIntosh and Hana Stewart would have had different covers, no. That was going to have been entirely chosen on what’s the best fit for them as actors/singers, nothing to do with costumes. But yes it definitely would have altered the existing costume designs at that cast change, which definitely would have meant some changes in who got what and what covers each costume was assigned for. Assuming Grace’s black A/S still became the swing costume, the H/P design would have been altered to be either A/H or S/P and a new design would have been needed for the other. We might not have even gotten pink and orange, depending on how everything got shuffled around.

Huh. Just realised that both UK S/P alts have the pink alt costume. Think it’s coincidence or?

Hey! Not a coincidence, no!

When we originally figured out that they'd be using alternate costumes for 2nd and 3rd covers, I (and most of the fandom) also assumed that those would be assigned based on their 2nd covers (as they obviously wouldn't be assigned based on 1st like they typically had been since they wouldn't be wearing it for those). The 19-21 WE alts never debuted as their third covers and the UKT ones only did under specific circumstances; with these new queens we knew they would debut 2nd covers but it hasn't been super clear whether or not they'll have scheduled debuts for 3rd covers, in which case they might never go on for them. It seemed like assigning alt costumes off of 2nd covers made the most sense.

However, as we're seeing now from both the West End and UK Tour, they seem to have assigned them based off of the costumes that made the most sense for both the 2nd AND 3rd covers rather than just the main set they'll wear them for.

Here's a quick reminder on the alt costumes and what cover combos they're typically used for in the UK system: - Black alt was originally designed as a swing costume for Grace Mouat for the 2018 UK Tour. It was then re-designed for S/H for Grace for the 2019 West End run (that design was also given to Mallory Maedke for S/H during the 2019 Chicago/Tour run). It was then once again re-designed and has primarily been in use as a swing costume in the UK since. - Teal alt was originally designed as a B/C alternate costume for Vicki Manser. The color was meant to be more Boleyn specific than Cleves, so when the UKT had Jennifer Caldwell as B/H and no B/C alt, they gave it to her with a Howard skirt. - Orange alt was originally designed as an A/P alternate costume for Courtney Stapleton. She switched midway through her run to become first cover S/P. As the 19-21 UKT and WE casts both had S/P alts and did not have A/P, they started to use orange for that combo. - Pink alt was originally designed as an A/H alternate costume. While Shekinah McFarlane was A/C and the first to wear it, she and Zara MacIntosh (A/H) were cast at the same time and the costume was designed as one that Shaka could wear when on as Aragon (already having a principal Cleves) and Zara could wear in general. - Silver alt was designed as a swing costume for Esme Rothero, and has now just been started to be worn by Harriet Caplan-Dean. I'm mostly focusing on how alt costumes have been assigned in the UK since all the countries or productions have slightly different costume teams that are going to assign alt costumes slightly differently, but here are the other scenarios for how each color has been used: - The 2019 Chicago/NAT regional tour mostly prioritized the costumes that would look best on the actors with some design influence. Mallory used the same design as Grace's S/H, but added a skirt for B. Nicole used teal for C just like how teal was designed for B/C, but she didn't cover B and teal for A/P had not happened before that point. - Norwegian Creative Studios also used sets of 3 covers and a variation for each, which meant that their only constraint was just figuring out which colors they wanted on which alt/with which cover combo. Since that was the case and they had some different team members working on assigning colors, they're slightly different. Teal was always used for B/S/H or S/H/P, while black was always used for A/B/C or A/C/P. - The Australia production has three swings but they each get two queen-specific variations. Most of the time the variations don't match up with what covers that costume has historically been used for, but it's orange A/C, teal B/S, black H/P.

- Roxanne Couch and Natalie Pilkington are both S/P alts, and will wear their pink alt costumes for A/B/C/H. Roxanne's 2nd covers are B/H while Natalie's are A/C or B/C. Pink was originally designed for the A/H cover combo, but has also been worn for B/C and never for S/P, so it's the one that makes the most sense with the covers they'd wear it for. - Danielle Rose is a B/H alt, so she wears her orange costume for A/S/C/P. Orange was A/P but has also been used as an S/C costume, so it's a clear choice. I'm expecting Leesa Tulley to have orange for the same reason.* - Paisley Billings is an A/C alt, so she wears her teal costume for B/S/H/P. Teal is typically B/C or B/H, but is also the default for B/S/H or S/H/P alts on NCL productions. Once again, it makes sense with her covers. Also expecting Grace Melville to have teal.* All in all, having swings in black and silver, S/P alt in pink, A/C in teal, and B/H in orange just makes a lot of sense in terms of the covers they'll wear them for!

Hopefully that helps provide some explanation! *This could not be the case; they could decide to go based off of what is most flattering for those two depending on what their 2nd vs 3rd covers are, but I think this is most likely.

If Grace was originally cast as alt Aragon/Howard and Courtney S. was originally cast as alt Seymour/Parr, do you think they would’ve had completely different costumes, or even different colours?

Definitely! The costumes were designed as a combo of two principal designs. That's usually primarily the color of one, and primarily the design of another, but there are influences from both and they’re still designed in a way so it can work well for both! If the covers they were designed for were different, that also would have affected the alt designs.

Had she started out as Aragon/Howard on the West End, she presumably would have kept an open skirt since that’s what Aragon/Howard both have, and likely had some changes to her top as well. You can think of pink alt as the example: it’s the costume that ultimately was designed for A/H, and it has that open skirt and a bodice taken with some heavy inspiration from the Aragon silhouette. I will note that I don’t think it would have changed her color, but that’s just because Grace had already originated the black swing costume.

Courtney Stapleton  L-R: Courtney in her orange alt designed for A/P; Harriet Caplan-Dean in silver alt as Parr Courtney Stapleton’s costume had the original orange alt costume, designed for Aragon/Parr. Aragon inspired the color, and while much of the design is based in Parr there are still elements (like the lacing on the sleeves and top and the chains on the pants) that were inspired by Aragon and likely wouldn’t be part of the costume if Aragon hadn’t been an inspiration. She later switched her covers to Seymour/Parr. Since then we’ve had a few S/Ps wear orange and no A/Ps (no A/P combos at all) so orange alt has (incorrectly) started to be labeled as S/P, but those Aragon influences still exist even after some of the re-designs. If it had been designed for S/P initially, I would expect to have seen something fairly close to the silver swing costume with pants: light silver mimicking Seymour’s white and the silhouette of the sleeves and pants mimicking Parr.

Now what I wanted to share is, Roxanne Couch seems to confirm in her Insta stories that she’s second cover Boleyn/Howard (though everything except first covers is mostly for emergencies.) Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy it! It's chaotic and sometimes I get a little too stressed but mostly it's interesting and fun for me, and it's always nice to hear that other people appreciate it! (Also opera is great, I support you)

I did see that! It doesn't make casting, as in the actual casting process itself, super complicated, but how they choose to do cover orders is complicated from a management perspective.

I'll go into more detail on that, but here's some context that's important to know (copied from the post where you probably originally read that):

"For the three alternates w/ two covers system, there are two options to go with. The first was used by the 2019-2021 WE alternates and relies on the queen combos always staying the same: Zara MacIntosh: 1st A/H, 2nd B/C, 3rd S/P Cherelle Jay: 1st B/C, 2nd S/P, 3rd A/H Hana Stewart: 1st S/P, 2nd A/H, 3rd B/C In this scenario you can see that it’s always A/H, B/C, and S/P. I’m going to call this the consistent cover combo style. The second is currently used by the 2019-22 UKT alternates and the original 2019 WE alts (only listing their original cover order, but all subsequent also followed this): Cassandra Lee: 1st A/C, 2nd S/H, and 3rd B/P Jennifer Caldwell: 1st B/H, 2nd A/P, 3rd S/C Harriet Watson: 1st S/P, 2nd B/C, 3rd A/H – Courtney Stapleton: 1st A/P, 2nd S/C, 3rd B/H Vicki Manser: 1st B/C, 2nd H/P, 3rd A/S Grace Mouat: 1st S/H, 2nd A/B, 3rd C/P In this scenario, the cover combos never stay the same; while Cassy has A/C together in hers, they’re split up between Jennifer and Harriet for second covers (etc for all the rest of the first covers)."

So, now that we have confirmation of Danielle as A/C, Roxanne as B/H, and Paisley as S/P, we can see that they follow the consistent style. I was actually really surprised by this because the scrambled system is really smart from a management perspective and during cast-wide illnesses or absences.

For example, Cassandra Lee had a couple periods of time where she was out for a significant period due to a health issue. When that happened, Jennifer Caldwell and Harriet Watson each took over one of her first covers - the one that was in their respective second covers - so that Jennifer effectively became 1st cover A/B/H and Harriet effectively became 1st cover S/C/P for as long as Cassy was out. If the UKT alts followed the consistent style, one of them would have been second cover for both Aragon *and* Cleves and that wouldn't have been possible. If that was the case and both A + C need to be covered and the first cover is out, one of the alts would have needed to be on in a third cover role since an A/C 2nd couldn’t cover both.

The same would go for the WE if they used a scrambled style. If, for instance, the 2nd covers were A/S Danielle, B/P Paisley, and C/H Roxanne, and Claudia and Meesha were both out during Roxanne Couch’s current vacation, Paisley could effectively just become a temporary 1st cover Parr and Danielle could do the same for Aragon.

It’s not the biggest deal since they have the swings, but generally it just helps have more consistent coverage from the alts without a reliance on swings for those scenarios! It’s worked well for them in the past so I’m surprised they aren’t trying to make it always work out with the scrambled style. (P.S. This got stuck in my drafts and I thought I had long since posted it - so sorry about that!)

Do we know what’s going on with the crowns across the different productions?

It seems that some queens still use the old style crowns (Liv, Shannen, Chiara, Lauren Drew, Cassy, etc using the old Aragon crowns or Jen, Harriet, etc using the old single band short S/P crown) while some have the new ones (ex Jen Aragon).

Also with the alt Aragon crown, we have two new designs: the single band crown (Collette, Zara) and double band (Rachel, Nat, Jen).

The Seymour crown situation is also weird as to why some Seymours have a white crown vs black…

Can you please try to make sense of all this? Along with this, do we know how many different types of crowns the different productions are using right now, excluding retired designs like the Maiya?

Okay, so on the last question I don’t have all that info yet, but @lightleckrereins and I have a crowns masterpost long in progress that will answer it once it is finished.

The shorter answer for a lot of this is just that Six is in a bit of a weird period with costumes/hair and wigs/crowns. The current costumes system started very small in 2018 and the show grew really exponentially and unexpectedly, which they hadn’t originally planned for. 2019-2020 was then an era full of a lot of experimentation and a lot of changes as the show grew and they brought in different people and teams to try and manage that, who then made different decisions for different productions. Over lockdown they seem to have gotten together and started really deciding to standardize things, which is how we started getting newer designs (costumes, wigs, and hair) with the 2021 Broadway production or the 2021 West End cast change. However, those are both from times when they had to remake everything! They still have a lot of cast members from pre-lockdown in their old costumes, wigs, and crowns That’s why they still have a lot of older pieces left over from that phase in 2019 in addition to the shiny new 2021 designs/changes. A lot of those older versions will be phased out eventually, like Aus/UKT having old costume designs, but that probably won’t be until the next cast changes and/or those costume pieces (including crowns) need to be replaced.

Another major factor is that ultimately, as much as we talk about increasing standardization, Six still has different people working on different productions. At least 4-5+ costume shops worked on their costumes for current productions and 3-4 different teams working on crowns, and there are several costume associates that all work on different productions. As a result there are still going to be some changes even within the general standardization we’re seeing.

As far as specific examples/questions you asked about:

- Chiara Assetta, Shannen Alyce Quan: Australia is, from what I’ve seen, still using their 2019/2020 crowns. Those already had some differences from other productions due to accommodating hairstyle changes.

- Cassandra Lee/Jennifer Caldwell Aragon crowns, Lauren Drew, Harriet Watson/Natalie Pilkington Seymour crowns: Current crowns are a mix of old 2019-20 and newer crowns made for the 2020 (cancelled) and 2021 productions as needed. All of the old designs that you’re commenting on are older crowns. Jennifer and Natalie Pilkington both wear the updated Aragon style; I’ve been assuming this is related to their wig style but that’s purely speculation and it may be for a totally different reason (also keep in mind that the UK alts generally seem to share crowns, so Nat/Jen probably have the same new one and Cassy is presumably still using her old one).

- Zara MacIntosh/Collette Guitart/Rachel Rawlinson: Zara/Collette vs Rachel is probably just a change made to design. Like I mentioned with Nat/Jen, it’s also likely that Zara/Collette shared a crown and the single row may have been to accommodate Zara’s hairstyle.

- Liv Alexander: I’m going off of memory with this one so I may not be entirely correct, but she seemed to have one crown that she used for both Aragon and Cleves. It was an old style and probably an old crown used by a former queen - they needed one that wasn’t currently in use so that she could travel between the productions without accidentally taking anyone else’s. Probably didn’t make her entirely new ones because they knew she’d only be with the productions for a short period of time.

- Black vs white Seymour crowns: This is a decision that is mostly going to be up to associates, but it seems like the general guideline is that blonde/light hair = white band while darker hair = black band. White band was probably just because they liked the look of it for Abby Mueller, and then why they go back and forth depending on the queen is just based on limiting really stark color variance. Let me note that that’s specific to actors wearing the principal-style costume - so far all of the actors in alt costumes have exclusively had a black Seymour crown because it works better with all the alt costumes (no white on alt costumes, so white would look out of place on the crown).
