K-dramas Featuring Childhood Friends - Turned Lovers (mutual pining a plus)

Come and Hug Me: Two childhood friends share an immense trauma of her family being murdered by his father. Yes, I said that properly. They meet later in life and help one another heal while being tormented by their pasts. You will cry, many times.

Just Between Lovers: They weren’t exactly friends but they share the same childhood trauma from being trapped in a collapsed building. Kang Doo is super good at the pining and angst in this due to his stubborn nature of wanted to protect people from getting close to him (if you’re not in love with Junho after this drama...)

Where Your Eyes Linger: You all know I’m in love with this BL drama about two boys, a chaebol and his hired bodyguard living together and trying not to fall in love. Hint: that’s impossible! Peak Angst and Pining.

Fight My Way: An adorable rom com about four friends who have grown up together and live in the same apartment building. It’s funny and sweet, and the chemistry is great! They do flashbacks of their childhood at the end of almost every episode.

When the Weather is Fine: This slow paced romance that takes place in a small town and features extremely beautiful leads (Seo Kang Joon and Park Young Min). It has a ton of angst and pining because he’s loved her for basically EVER and the show seems to lean heavily on k-drama tropes that make for peak angst. This show won’t be for everyone due to the pacing, but the couple is super soft and lovely. 

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes: A psychological thriller about a cop, his sister, and a guy that keeps popping up in their lives. There is a ton of angst and pining paired with childhood trauma and family secrets. This is one of my favorite dramas ever, but it’s a stressful one so be kind to your heart!

You Drive Me Crazy: A drama special about two friends live together while one is getting her apartment renovated. While not perfect, I really enjoyed the chemistry and pining - plus it’s short :)

Weightlifting Fairy Bok Joo: A coming of age rom com about a sporty girl training on the weightlifting team. It’s got great best friends, and her romance is with her childhood friend (who has grown into quite the hottie). It’s light and fluffy.

Healer doesn’t have mutual pining but it does have a childhood backstory that links the two leads. Honestly that backstory may have been a bit unnecessary IMO but the couple is amazing and the angst comes from him not allowing people into his life.

She Was Pretty: Everyone knows that I don’t like this drama (at all) but it does lean heavy on the friends to lovers. Her childhood best friend ends up being her boss and the romance starts from there. Some people LOVE this drama so maybe don’t take it from me?

Pinocchio: There is a really long k-drama childhood origin reason why the two leads become acquaintances, but they go to high school together and later become reporters in training.  I made this sound really dry it’s actually good!

Kill Me Heal Me: A very polarizing drama about a man who has DID (dissociative identity disorder) and the “doctor” who is hired to live with him and hide his illness from his chaebol family. There’s a lot of amnesia and childhood flashbacks (A LOT.) It has a lot of pining and angst for sure and the childhood trauma trope is huge.

A Few Fake Dating-to-lovers K-Dramas as the cherry on top

Coffee Prince: This classic is a must watch about a girl who pretends to be a boy to get ahead in life. She gets a job at a coffee shop and the owner finds himself falling in love (and freaking out!). Peak Angst and Pining.

The Secret Life Of My Secretary: This rom com about a secretary who helps her boss conceal his facial recognition disorder is the perfect example of two adorable dummies in love. The pining is great, the angst is top notch and the leading lady (played by Jin Ki Joo) is so much fun to watch! 

Because This Is My First Life: A slice of life centered around a girl who marries her landlord so that she can live in his house. This is one of my favorite dramas, but I do not like the lead dude since he’s a real life creep so I always mention that when I recommend it.

Fated to Love you is on my watchlist and apparently has fake dating or contract dating but I have’t gotten to it yet! Seems like it’s full of classic tropes though!

Explanation of Shamanic Rituals in 손: The Guest

This is not the most organized of thought pieces, so I do apologize for that. I’m not being paid, so I honestly don’t care enough. 

Disclaimer: I am not a native Korean speaker, nor do I have any academic training, except access to academic texts, and a significant interest in the subject. Also, I’m married to a native Korean speaker, so trust me when I say, I badgered him all the time while we watched the show, asking questions that allowed me to better understand what I needed to look for in research. I can read Korean and type it, so I was able to find a lot with information he provided me. Google Translate sucks balls, but it’s often good enough, and/or points in the right direction. If you are a native speaker, and I’m totally wrong, please let me know. I will fix it and credit you! 

I know there were lots of vagueness and unanswered questions about the rituals, who Park Il Do was, and what the ever-loving-fuck was going on most of the time, so I want to address them. I don’t speak to the Catholic part of any of it, except to say, in Korea, Catholicism is one of the more tolerant of Christian denominations that proselytized/evangelized there. As you can see, while not the same, they are compatible with one another, like in structured rituals dealing with possession, among other things. If you are Catholic and want to contribute to the post, please do! 

First let me point out that in the entire show, the terms “possession” and “exorcism” are used rather loosely, and encompass many different rituals that don’t have obvious English translations. Some were more confusing than others, which I want to clarify.

Episode 8-9: Seo Joon (the little girl)

In Episode 8, when Seo Joon is questioned about what happened to her, she tells Hwa Pyung and YukGwang she was approached by an old lady ghost in old-fashioned clothing, who was frightening at first, but later wasn’t

YukGwang asks about the symptoms she had (digging, aching body), and says she has been “possessed” and she needs an “exorcism.”

The translations are a bit funky here: The English subtitle is “possession” which is true, but not in the way we think of it the west, which is primarily from the Catholic Church. What is actually happening to her is called: 무병 (巫病, mu byeong), or “spirit sickness/ghost sickness,” and she is experiencing 신병 (shin byeong) or “self-loss”, which is what happens to someone destined to be a shaman. They serve their spirit guide, take a new name, and thus “lose” their former identity.

Then he tells her grandmother she needs an “exorcism,” which is not a very good translation. He says she needs 내림굿 (naelim kut) which is the initiation ritual of a new shaman, meaning she needs to accept her role and become a shaman.

But when Seo Joon says the lady is gone, replaced by spirits with knives, they realize that can’t happen. The old lady she saw was the spirit who should have become her spirit guide, and the one she would serve as a shaman, but Park Il Do destroyed her, leaving Seo Joon without a guide, and vulnerable to the evil spirits that come for her instead.

In the end of the character’s arc, he talks about another “exorcism” which is, yet again, a different ritual. This is the 눌림굿 (nullim kut), or the ritual to suppress a potential shaman’s abilities to see spirits. It is the same one that was used on Hwa Pyung when he was a child.

Episode 12: The Blind Shaman

Choi Yoon goes to see the shaman who performed a 굿(kut) on Hwa Pyung as a child. She tells Choi Yoon she remembers the boy from the 세습무 (saeseummu), or “hereditary shaman” family. He asks which kind of ritual she performed on him, and she says nullim kut, but its effects are wearing off. She refers to the 큰귀신 (k’un gwishin), or the “great/powerful spirit,” which they call Park Il Do, that wants him. This weakening of the ritual’s power is why he is able to see the ghost of his father again. It doesn’t explain why his eye hurts or why he can’t touch the cross, though. 

Episode 16: The Ritual to capture and contain 손 

In the flashback in Episode 16, we see Yukgwang telling Hwa Pyung how to trap Park Il Do in his body. He uses two words the translators didn’t even bother with. I don’t blame them.  

The first word is the ritual that Hwa Pyung should use to trap Park Il Do, and is called the 팔문금쇄진 ( 八門金鎖陣; palmungeumswaejin)  or “The Eight Gate Lock Formation,” which comes from the Chinese novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is a fictional military formation, but also a real ritual used in Korean Shamanism. It probably comes from the influence of Buddhism and Taoism from China, which goes back to the 3-4th centuries.

Each gate represents one of the Eight Generals/Gods of the Eight Doors and the Eight Directions (If you have a better translation for these, let me know. I did my best.):

North- 휴문신장 (休門神將) - God of the Gate of Rest

North East- 생문신장 ( 生門神將) - God of the Gate of Life

East- 상문신장 (傷門神將) - God of the Gate of Injury

South East- 두문신장 (枓門神將) - God of the Gate of Fabrication

West- 경문신장 (驚門神將) - God of the Gate of Fear

North West- 개문신장 (開門神將) - God of the Open Gate

South- 경문신장 (景門神將) - God of the Gate of View/Scenery

South West- 사문신장(死門神將) - God of the Gate of Death

The act of doing this ritual is called 팔문진경 (palmunjingyeong).

In the actual ritual, an intricately cut piece of paper in the shape of a cylindrical net is hung from the ceiling where the ritual is taking place. Eight nets are then strung out from the center net to eight more hanging nets with the names of the above deities written on amulets in red ink, pasted to the corresponding net. The image of the ghost or spirit that needs to be captured is then placed in the middle of the net, like so:

Because Hwa Pyung is trying to trap the spirit of Park Il Do in himself, he carves each of the god’s names into his body in, roughly, the proper directions. It’s much more gruesome, but works. His blood is red (the color of the dead)  which is a substitute for red ink. The last one, he writes on his arm which is significant because 팔 (pal) means “arm” in Korean, as well as the number “eight” in Sino-Korean numbers. 

The characters are Hanja, and correct as far as I can tell. I can imagine it would be quite difficult to carve complex characters into one’s skin, upside down, and they are kind of hard to read.

Side note: I tried to find out how these directional gods corresponded with the 오방신장 (obang shinjang), or the “Gods of the Five Directions” in Korean mythology, but I was unable to find anything. It may be that the difference is in pre/post-Buddhist and Taoist influence. I’m not sure.

손: The Guest

The term 손 (sohn or son) It means “hand” as well as “guest/visitor.” In shamanism is it referred to an “ominous force,” which is why the villagers call the thing from the sea, sohn.

It was unclear from the beginning if sohn and Park Il Do were the same or different, even in Korean, as Korean is very vague. Pronouns aren’t really used, so there is no real reference to who they are talking about except in context or direct questions. This is why Choi Yoon assumed that “he” was Hwa Pyung, not his grandfather, when the shaman said sohn was still in the body he had possessed back then.  

So at one point, they were not the same. Park Il Do was possessed by the ominous force known as sohn, then transferred to the driver. Then I’m not sure if he went into Hwa Pyung’s grandfather, or if there were more in-between. I can’t remember. 

As the grandfather was from a hereditary shaman family, his body was powerful enough to hold him for the 20 years, along with Park Il Do’s body buried in the backyard. This is like the crow that allowed Park Il Do put in the pickled shrimp, so he always had access to Hwa Pyung, even when he was far away. How he stayed attached to Park Il Do’s body, idk, except because it wasn’t destroyed or cremated. Wrapped up like that, the body didn’t decompose. 

Miscellaneous Words

살 (煞 sal) - “invisible arrow,” “evil spirit.” Sal is also a homophone for death in Chinese, and in pure Korean, it means arrow. Therefore one is struck with an arrow of misfortune. More generically, it is evil/bad things that are caused by malevolent spirits.

살푸리 (salpuri)- ritual to remove curses and evil spirits; or remove the arrows of misfortune.

Despite the fact that Minseok is very serious, the two can have their moments where they’re laughing and joking and Kai is thankful to have a friend like that.

❇︎Lu Han - Kai and Lu used to be much closer when they were both younger, due to Kai’s friendship with Minseok and the fact Lu was dating Minseok at the time. Though they aren’t as close anymore, they still have days where they meet up and talk about life. Kai is happy the two have stayed as friends.

❇︎Timoteo - Kai met him through mutual friends and would now be lost without him. They’ve been friends for years and have so many memories together that Kai has lost count and probably can’t even remember half of them. He’s so happy him and Sungwoon are back together, two of his best friends being in love means the world to him.

❇︎Jace Hyun - Kai and Jace didn’t like each other at first, in fact, they hated each other. Kai just didn’t take to him at all, especially when he found out he was dating Tae, someone who Kai had liked a lot. They eventually became friends through their mutual love for dance and now Kai would be lost without his other son.

❇︎Tyler Kang - Kai and Tae had a cat and mouse chase for almost a year. Tae liked Kai, then the opposite. They never actually got anywhere because as soon as Kai was ready to confess to Tae, the other boy had moved on and decided to move away, it hurt Kai slightly and he was a little cautious towards it, but he knows Tae is happy and is happy for him. They dated for around a year, Kai had realised about 8 months in that he didn’t feel the same way she did but he didn’t have the heart to tell her. Eventually he felt bad on her as she confessed to him that she’d fallen in love with him. He told her that he didn’t feel that way for her and told her that he’s gay. Krystal took it very badly and ended up breaking his nose through a rather aggressive punch. The two still despise each other to this day.

Despite his angry face and the fact people seemed to be rather intimidated by him, Kai was fascinated and curious over this boy. He didn’t know why, but he was. They begun dating and Kai couldn’t believe it, he just felt so lucky to have this amazing human being and promised himself that he would try his hardest not to mess it up. The couple do have their arguments but it is always resolved and normally ends up in teary cuddles. Kai has never been happier, the love of his life having said yes to his proposal was the best thing to ever happen to him and he can’t wait for their future.

background:

Kai and Errie were abandoned by their birth parents when they where young, Errie being 5 while Kai was only 3. This was because their parents often spent time dealing drugs and spent the money that should of been used for rent for their 1 bedroom apartment on drugs and alcohol. They where way overdue their rent and severely in debt and knew they needed to get away from the people they where in debt from and knew they wouldn’t be able to do it properly with two kids and so they left them. They where found a few weeks later by their landlord, who had come around for the rent. Kai was severely underweight and sick, despite the fact Errie had been trying to feed him and clean him. Kai also had several cuts and bruises from trying to find a way to get out their apartment and find their parents, Errie didn’t allow him to, saying that they’ll come back eventually and wouldn’t want him to go out looking for them. They where both sent to a mental rehabilitation centre where they where fed well and taught how to get back into normal life after being in abandonment for several weeks to over a month, the doctors weren’t sure. They were sent to a children home after being deemed fit, Kai still had to visit doctors and therapy sessions after they left. They where there for 7 years and many people came into the home, wanting to adopt just one of them but they both didn’t want to leave the other. Then their now mothers came in, the couple adored both of the boys and immediately wanted to take them home. Kai fell in love with them the moment he saw them, they gave him care and affection that he couldn’t remember anyone ever giving him. He helped Errie like them a bit better. Kai can’t remember his birth parents at all and still has some nightmares over being abandoned but he’s thankful for his mums at giving them a second chance of being someones children and letting them stay as brothers.

school life:

Kai was bullied in school. Not because he was nerdy or people found him ugly. It was because he dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. The other boys all wanted to play football and although Kai did enjoy football somewhat, to him it was just a hobby and nothing too serious. He found a friend in Taemin and the two joined a dance class together. Though people still bullied Kai every now and then, he focused on his school work and his dreams and blocked out the bullies with the friends he’s made. Kai did well in school, not so well in English class due to his dyslexia but passed with some extra help. ★Irene Oh - Errie isn’t as close to Irene as he is with her younger brother, nevertheless, he still adores her. He always finds it fun to wind up Irene, she pretends to dislike it but they always end up laughing about it. Irene always gives him very good advice and so he turns to her often.

★Amber Oh - Errie doesn’t see Amber often as she has moved away to work on her music, but whenever she visits, Errie loves it. He finds her hilarious and always loves being in her company. She always knows the right thing to say at the right time.

❇︎Minseok Kim - Errie and he have been friends for a long time. Ernie always teases him and sometimes thinks that Min actually hates him but is reassured soon later. Errie relies on him for a lot of things and couldn’t ask for a better friend.

❇︎Tyler Kang - Errie met Tae during university. He was the third year while Tae was a first year. The two became friends due to someone in their shared society saying that they looked alike. Errie and Tae found it hilarious and even ended up wearing matching clothes. Even after Errie left university, the two have stayed close and now work together.

❇︎Kris Wu - Errie was scared of Kris at first and kept his distance from him. They first met when Errie started at the company, Kris had been there longer and had more experience and this frightened Errie. They got partnered up for a small task and Errie found that Kris was actually a sweetheart and is very passionate about music.

❇︎Lu Han - Errie met Lu through Minseok when the couple were together. He found the older yet younger looking boy intriguing and adorable. Though they aren’t too close, Errie still considers him a friend and knows the other boy would be there for him if he needed him.

❇︎Heechul Kim - Errie and Heechul have been friends since Errie was around 6. Heechul was in the children's home along with Errie and the younger boy found comfort in him. He always makes him laugh and Errie feels like Heechul knows him better than he knows himself.

❇︎Taeyeon Kim - The two have only become friends recently to make one of their late friends happy. After their relationship, they hated each other but now they’ve made up, apologising for their mistakes in the past and vowing to be happy for the other in where they are now.

❇︎Charlie Kim & Vincent Min - Errie works with the two but doesn’t see them outside of work too often. He still considers them friends though just because he finds them very easy to talk to.

❇︎Kyungsoo Do - Errie was very scared and intimidated by him at first. Despite the fact he was small, he had this look and power about him that made Errie scared. He didn’t expect him to start dating, let alone get engaged and married, to his shy little brother but Errie couldn’t be happier. He considers Kyungsoo one of his very close friends, he finds him fascinating and is thankful that he’s made his brother so happy.

❥Taeyeon Kim - Tayeon was his first and only girlfriend. He was infatuated with her for at least 2 years before they finally got together. He found her amazing; her voice, her talent, her everything. If he could of made a new religion after her, then he probably would of. They where together for about 3-4 years before Tayeon was assaulted and things started decreasing, especially because Errie blamed himself for what happened to her. After losing her 2 month old son, Taeyeon’s mental health began decreasing and so she began to lose feelings for Errie. She decided to stay with him though, but had begun to cheat on him. Errie found out a few months later and was heartbroken. He begun to not believe in love because of her.

❥Married to Chanyeol Park - Errie is so thankful for his husband. He allowed him to begin believing in love again and has made so many of his dreams come true. Errie knows that Chanyeol is his soulmate and can’t wait for them to have the twins and to start their little family together properly. He adores him and always will.

○ b i o g r a p h y

background:

Errie and his brother where abandoned was Errie was 5 and Kai was 3. Their birth parents dabbled in drugs and often spent their rent money, for their small 1 bedroom apartment, on that and alcohol. They were way overdue on their rent and were in severe debt. They knew they needed to get away and they couldn’t do that with two kids and so they left them. Errie and Kai where found a few weeks later when the landlord came around for the rent. Both weren’t fed and washed and Errie hadn’t slept in days, too busy waiting and hoping their parents would come back. Errie had also been trying to look after Kai and had burned and hurt himself several times trying to make sure Kai was fed and looked after. The boys where sent to a mental rehabilitation centre after they where treated at the hospital for their hunger and medical issues from not being cleaned properly. After they where more healthier, both mentally and physically, they where sent to a children’s home. They would be there for 7 years, until Errie was 12 and Kai was 10. When their mothers adopted them, Errie was cautious that they too would abandon them. He soon realised that they weren’t going too and thought of this as his second chance at having parents.

school life:

Errie did well in school, despite the fact he wasn’t interested in any of the typical lessons and was constantly causing trouble. He was a quite popular kid, with many friends who also wanted to be musicians. In their second to last year of school, they formed a band. It was awful but they loved it. Errie moved to university, majoring in music and acting, knowing he wanted to be a musical actor. He got his degree with flying colours and was soon graduated to be a proper actor in the company he’d been working with since he left high school.
