Air pollution dramatically reduces pollination because it degrades the scent of flowers, affecting bees' ability to find them, a study has found. A research team comprising the UK Center for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) and the Universities of Reading, Surrey, Birmingham and Southern Queensland, found that ozone substantially changes the size and scent of floral odor plumes. It reduced honeybees' ability to recognize odors by up to 90% from just a few meters away. Ground-level ozone, which aggravates respiratory conditions, typically forms when nitrogen oxide emissions from vehicles and industrial processes react with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from vegetation in the presence of sunlight.

Why Air Vaccine 015+ Stands Out as the Premier Choice for Indoor Air Cleansing
Tumblr media
Contrary to common belief, indoor air quality can be significantly worse than outdoor air. The Environmental Protection Agency has found that indoor air pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor levels—sometimes even 100 times higher. This alarming data highlights the crucial need for effective indoor air purification solutions.
What makes indoor air unhealthy?
The air inside our homes and offices can be contaminated by various sources. Building materials like paint and carpets can release harmful substances into the air. Household appliances that burn fuel, such as stoves and heaters, emit pollutants. Excessive indoor moisture can lead to mold and encourage the growth of dust mites and other harmful organisms. Additionally, outdoor pollutants and allergens can infiltrate our indoor spaces, contributing to poor air quality.
Poor indoor air quality can lead to serious health issues, including infections, lung cancer, and chronic lung diseases like asthma. Those with pre-existing lung conditions are particularly vulnerable to these indoor air pollutants.
The solution: Air Vaccine 015+
The Air Vaccine 015+ active air purifier employs OH radicals—which are among the most potent oxidants—to break down harmful substances in the air. Utilizing advanced research from the UK Ministry of Defence, the device produces up to 10 times more OH radicals than traditional air purifiers.
How does this happen? This active air purifier creates a unique cascade reaction where OH radicals are continuously regenerated after each disinfection cycle. This process not only neutralizes pollutants but also contributes to reducing Sick Building Syndrome, alleviating allergic hypersensitivity reactions, and improving overall Indoor Environmental Quality.
The reaction’s cascading effect not only increases the effectiveness of Air Vaccine 015+ but also ensures that it operates efficiently with low power consumption while effectively purifying air over an area of up to 120 square meters.
Efficacy and safety
Air Vaccine 015+ has been rigorously tested and proven to eliminate a high percentage of bacteria, viruses, and VOCs. Its low power consumption of only 2.4W makes it both energy-efficient and cost-effective, with an average monthly electricity cost of just 40 cents even when used continuously. More importantly, it is safe for humans, plants, and animals, with ozone emission levels well below the WHO environmental standard.
Discover the future of air purification with Air Vaccine 015+. Purchase this active air purifier from Steede Medical, a leading supplier of medical supplies and equipment in the US. They offer Air Vaccine 015+ at a competitive price with a guarantee of timely delivery. Experience the benefits of enhanced indoor air quality today!

How to Treat Asthma in an Environment-friendly Way?
But while the hydrofluorocarbons that replaced CFCs in pressurized metered-dose inhalers don’t deplete the ozone layer, they are potent greenhouse gases. . Low-carbon inhalers are predominantly used in Europe. The large carbon footprint caused by the use of hydrofluorocarbon propellants in metered-dose inhalers in the UK is three times that in Europe. Researchers wanted to compare the potential…

The Ultimate Guide To Build Your Own Pool
A pool is a tank or huge bowl that is loaded up with water and planned for recreational or serious swimming or plunging. Pools are additionally utilized for other washing exercises, for example, playing, swimming, Aufstellpool water
working out, coasting on internal cylinders, or chilling on hot days. The substance chlorine is generally used to eliminating germs and green growth. At times ocean water is additionally used to keep up pool green growth
free. The filtration framework is utilized to keep green growth and other perilous foreign substances under control. Siphon and Filter are two primary segments of a pool filtration system.
Kinds of pools
There are various sorts of pools. The most widely recognized pool styles are play pool, freestyle pool, mathematical pool, lap pool, jumping pool, endlessness pool, spool, and the border flood pool.
The opposition pool. Swimming rivalries can be held there. Rivalry pools are generally exceptionally enormous, and normally either 25 or 50 m long and their profound end is 2 to 5 m profound. They have generally 4 to 8
paths.
The play pool: A play pool is very shallow (Typically no more profound than five feet). Play pools can have a great time plan, and are regularly made in various shapes.
The freestyle pool: A freestyle pool is assembled for the most part to impersonate a characteristic tidal pond pool or little desert garden. It will have a characteristic lopsided shape, and will regularly have highlights around it
like rocks and cascades to commend the naturalistic style.
The mathematical pool: A mathematical pool has even lines and highlights. Typically underlying a rectangular shape, this pool is considered the "conventional pool" style.
The lap pool: Lap pools are assembled so that individuals can swim laps for wellbeing and wellness. They will in general be long and restricted, ordinarily more than fifty feet in length.
The plunging pool: These pools are fabricated profound; jumping pools are typically 3 to 6 m profound with a plunging board or a stage, or a hop tower. The Olympic plunging tower has stages at 1 m, 3 m, 5 m and 10 m
stature.
The endlessness pool: Infinity pools (likewise alluded to as boundlessness edge pools, or negative edge pools) give the dream that the edge of the pool reaches out to the skyline. This gives an optical deception that the pool
"has no edge", and looks as though the pool goes on to limitlessness.
The spool: "spool" is a mix of the two words spa and pool. The spool is a more modest pool, all the more normally observed as a huge spa. Spools are frequently around 12 to 14 feet squared.
The border flood pool: This pool is made by having the pool surface's water level at a similar level as the encompass of the pool. The water of the pool channels into an indented edge around the pool.
Length: Most pools on the planet are estimated in meters, yet in the United States pools are regularly estimated in feet and yards. In the UK most pools are aligned in meters, yet more established pools estimated in yards
actually exist. In the US, pools will in general either be 25 yards (SCY-short course yards), 25 meters (SCM-short course meters) or 50 meters (in length course). US secondary schools and the NCAA direct short course (25
yards) rivalry. There are additionally numerous pools 33 1⁄3 m long, so 3 lengths = 100 m. This pool measurement is generally used to oblige water polo.
USA Swimming (USA-S) swims in both measurement and non-metric pools. Nonetheless, the global standard is meters, and world records are possibly perceived when swum in 50 m pools (or 25 m for short course) yet 25
-yard pools are basic in the US. By and large, the more limited the pool, the quicker the ideal opportunity for a similar distance, since the swimmer picks up speed from pushing off the divider after each turn toward the
finish of the pool.
Width: Most European pools are between 10 m and 50 m wide.
Profundity: The profundity of a pool relies upon the reason for the pool, and whether it is available to people in general or carefully for private use. In the event that it is a private easygoing, loosening up pool, it might go
from 1.0 to 2.0 m (3.3 to 6.6 ft) profound. On the off chance that it is a public pool intended for plunging, it might slant from 3.0 to 5.5 m (10 to 18 ft) in the profound end. A youngsters' play pool might be from 0.3 to
1.2 m (1 to 4 ft) profound. Most open pools have varying profundities to oblige diverse swimmer prerequisites. In numerous purviews, it is a prerequisite to show the water profundity with obviously checked profundities
joined to the pool walls.
Pools can be either inside or outside. They can be of any size and shape, and inground or over the ground. Most pools are perpetual installations, while others are transitory, folding structures.
Private pools
Private pools are generally more modest than public pools, on normal 3.7 m × 7.3 m (12 ft × 24 ft) to 6.1 m × 12.2 m (20 ft × 40 ft) while public pools as a rule start at 24 m (80 ft). Home pools can be for all time
worked in, or be gathered over the ground and dismantled after summer. Exclusive open air pools in terraces or gardens began to multiply during the 1950s in locales with warm summer atmospheres, especially in the United
States with desegregation.
Development techniques for private pools differ incredibly. The fundamental kinds of in-ground pools are gunite shotcrete, solid, vinyl-lined, and one-piece fiberglass shells.
Numerous nations presently have exacting pool fencing prerequisites for private pools, which require pool zones to be detached so unapproved kids more youthful than six years can't enter. Numerous nations require a
comparative degree of assurance for the kids living in or visiting the house, albeit many pool proprietors favor the visual part of the pool in closeness to their living zones, and won't give this degree of insurance. There is no
agreement between states or nations on the prerequisites to fence private pools, and in numerous spots they are not needed by any means, especially in country settings.
Youngsters' pools
Economical impermanent polyvinyl chloride pools can be purchased in stores and brought down after summer. They are utilized generally outside in yards, are ordinarily shallow, and regularly their sides are expanded with
air to remain unbending. At the point when completed, the water and air can be let out and this kind of pool can be collapsed up for advantageous capacity. They are respected in the pool business as "splasher" pools
expected for chilling and interesting babies and kids, not for swimming, consequently the substitute name of "youngster" pools.
Toys are accessible for kids and others to play with in pool water. They are frequently exploded with air so they are delicate yet at the same time sensibly tough, and can coast in water.
Public pools
Honking Bec Lido, in South London
Public pools are frequently essential for a bigger relaxation place or recreational complex. These focuses regularly have more than one pool, for example, an indoor warmed pool, an outside (chlorinated, saltwater or
ozonated) pool which might be warmed or unheated, a shallower youngsters' pool, and a rowing pool for little children and babies. There may likewise be a sauna and at least one hot tubs or spa pools ("jacuzzis").
Numerous upscale lodgings and occasion resorts have a pool for use by their visitors. On the off chance that a pool is in a different structure, the structure might be known as a natatorium. The structure may in some cases
likewise have offices for related exercises, for example, a plunging tank. Bigger pools here and there have a plunging board joined at one edge over the water.
Numerous public pools are square shapes 25 m or 50 m long, yet they can be any size and shape. There are additionally intricate pools with counterfeit cascades, wellsprings, sprinkle cushions, wave machines, differing
profundities of water, extensions, and island bars.
Some swimming offices have storage spaces for dress and different things. The storage spaces can require a coin to be embedded in an opening, either as store or installment. There are normally showers - at times obligatory -
previously or potentially subsequent to swimming. There are regularly likewise lifeguards to guarantee the wellbeing of clients.
Swimming or rowing pools are shallow waterways expected for use by little youngsters, normally in parks. Solid swimming pools come in numerous shapes, customarily square shape, square or circle. Some are filled and
depleted every day because of absence of a channel framework. Staff chlorinate the water to guarantee wellbeing and security standards.

Global Air Fresheners Market 2020 Industry Key Players, Trends, Sales, Supply, Demand, Analysis & Forecast To 2024
Summary:
A new market study, titled “Discover Global Air Fresheners Market Upcoming Trends, Growth Drivers and Challenges” has been featured on WiseGuyReports.
Introduction
Air Fresheners Market
Air Fresheners are various types of products that emit a fragrance and are used to improve the scent in homes or commercial spaces like restrooms, vestibules, foyers, hallways, small indoor spaces, large spaces like lobbies, public areas, etc. Air freshener products include sprays, candles, oils, gels, beads, metered aerosol time-operated mist dispensers, electric fan air fresheners, gravity drip hygiene odour control cleaning systems, and passive non-mechanical evaporating aroma diffusers. The use of organic and chemical-free fresheners are becoming increasingly popular today.
@Get Free Sample Report at https://www.wiseguyreports.com/sample-request/4523223-world-air-fresheners-market-research-report-2024-covering
Odour control by air fresheners is addressed by five classes of mechanisms:
1.            Adsorption: Adsorbents are used to remove odour. They include zeolite, activated charcoal, and/or silica gel.
2.            Oxidation: Oxidizing agents like ozone, hydrogen peroxide, peroxide, chlorine, chlorate etc. are used to oxidize and eliminate sources of odours from surfaces and from the air as well (in case of ozone).
3.            Air sanitizer: Air sanitizers are effective in eliminating odours caused by airborne bacterial activity and also activate bacteria which improve hygiene.
4.            Surfactants and soaps: Are used to apply layers on to a surface that eliminate odour.
5.            Masking: Bad odours are masked by pleasant scents to eliminate the undesired smell.
The above five mechanisms fall into two categories based on delivery: continuous action and instant action.
Scented candles, incense burners, wall plug-ins, gels, electronic devices that use heat to vapourize scented oil continuously, etc. are examples of continuous action products. They need to be activated once (switching them on or lighting in case of a candle), and they continue to provide fragrant scents.
Aerosol sprays or atomizers are examples of instant action products. In the case of sprays, the propellant and the fragrance are packaged under high pressure in a sealed metal or glass container. It contains a valve which can be opened by a push of a button that contains the spray nozzle.
Air fresheners are very popular because of their impact on the environment through scents, and also for hygienic factors.

Asthma Inhalers Harmfull for Nature Also: see report
As indicated by an investigation distributed as of late in the diary BMJ Open, certain inhalers usually utilized by asthma patients transmit ozone-depleting substances to the tune of 25 kilograms of carbon dioxide comparable per gadget.
The examination focused on 4.67 million individuals determined to have asthma in the United Kingdom. This likewise has ramifications for treatment around the world, remembering for the U.S., where 22.6 million individuals (6.1 million of them kids) who are burdened with the condition. In this way, changing from a high-producing inhaler to one that doesn't utilize an ozone-depleting substance fuel could spare 150 - 400 kg (carbon dioxide comparable) every year.
naturegigs
The investigation thought about the ozone-depleting substance outflows of vaporized siphons - known as metered-portion inhalers (MDI) - with dry powder inhalers (DPI).
The investigation found that dry powder inhalers utilize no HFA (hydrofluoroalkane) charges by any means.
Every inhaler an individual uses could be dirtying the earth by as much as a 180-mile vehicle venture.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) has given new direction asking sufferers to abstain from utilizing the most well known kind of inhaler, known as a metered-portion inhaler (MDI).
Likewise, some asthma inhalers are as terrible for nature as eating meat, as per inquire about directed by the University of Cambridge. They found that the most well-known inhalers utilized in the UK make up four percent of nursery gasses transmitted by the National Health Service (NHS).
"Green" inhalers are prescribed to support the earth and spare millions for the NHS.
Metered-portion inhalers comprise of condensed compacted gases to siphon out the medications to the client as they take in. These contain hydrofluoroalkanes (HFAs), which are likewise powerful polluters.
Supplanting 10% of inhalers to ones that don't utilize condensed compacted gas could lessen carbon dioxide emanations by 58,000 tons per year.
Swapping with the least expensive proportional dry-powder inhaler, which has a carbon impression somewhere in the range of 10 and multiple times lower, could spare the NHS £8.2m per year.
Yearly, your carbon impression from the previously mentioned inhaler use could be in an abundance of a 100kg of CO2.
The specific measure of HFA present in inhalers is kept in mystery, so the carbon impression is determined from explore.
The emanations reserve funds when exchanging is equal to that accomplished by driving an eco-cognizant way of life, for example, by reusing, introducing divider protection in their home or maintaining a strategic distance from meat in your eating routine. 58,000 tons is about equivalent to that which would be acquired by 180,000 excursions from London to Edinburgh and back via vehicle.
As indicated by Dr. James Smith of the University of Cambridge, their group's examination shows that exchanging inhalers could support people, and the NHS all in all, to lessen their effect on the atmosphere astoundingly. He noticed this is a huge advance towards making a zero-carbon medicinal services framework appropriate for the 21st century.
Choices looking like watery fog can likewise be an alternative.
Be that as it may, the expenses of changing to dry powder inhalers may obstruct the NHS to actualize the change, yet it would pay off incredibly over the long haul.

Tab x Tab: A New Home For Coffee In West London
Westbourne Grove is a residential neighbourhood and shopping destination in West London, bordering Hyde Park, Notting Hill, and the iconic Portobello Road. It’s an eclectic mix of cultures and architectural styles where elegant townhouses and budget hotels, souvenir shops, and Middle Eastern restaurants, organic food markets, and council estates live alongside each other. The coffee scene consists mostly of chains like Starbucks or Costa and a few independent cafes—none of which would merit a trip out to this part of town solely to drink a flat white. That all changed with the opening of Tab x Tab. Finally, there is a very good reason to stop over in Westbourne Grove.
Tab x Tab was opened in July 2017 by husband and wife Mathew and Charmaine Tabatabai. Alongside speciality coffee from Ozone and Bocca, they serve premium teas from Lalani & Co., fresh pastries from Flour Station, and à la carte breakfast dishes prepared on site. Tab x Tab also has a retail corner with carefully curated homeware and lifestyle items, Linda Bloomfield tea ware and Kana London ceramic coffee mugs.
The Tabatabais embarked on an 18-month coffee tasting journey through London and beyond before launching their shop.
“We started exploring the idea of opening a coffee shop by doing a lot of research and going to a new cafe every single day. After about one year, we had developed a strong idea of what we wanted our coffee shop to look like,” Mathew Tabatabai says. “The majority of cafes in London melted into the same kind of place.”
The decision to offer a new kind of coffee experience, rather than do a carbon copy of other shops, gave the couple enough confidence and motivation to pursue their idea. The approach at the heart of Tab x Tab can be summed up in three words: speciality, execution, and consistency. High quality standards were set for Tab x Tab: from the food and beverage offerings to appliances and in-store tech, from the Front of House service to the interior design.
Charmaine and Mathew Tabatabai. Photo courtesy Zsuzsa Zicho.
Mathew and Charmaine always knew they had to start with the coffee. They looked for the best and found it at Ozone Coffee Roasters in London and Bocca Coffee in Amsterdam. They carefully planned every element of the store, looking for excellence in functionality first and then for beautiful and understated design.
“We worked so hard to ensure the execution of everything was as high quality and consistent as possible,” says Mathew. “Everything is there to give customers a truly unique and tasteful experience and bring some peace to their day when they are with us.”
Their attention to detail can be seen in the large oak table that allows customers to gather around, and share the space as if they were in their own home. It’s also seen in the 5.4-meter-long bar counter, custom built from a single piece of concrete (they had to remove the store doors to install it).
Mathew and Charmaine also made a deliberate choice to install a stainless steel Mavam—a groundbreaking machine that sits beneath the counter—instead of a bulky bar-top espresso machine, to remove barriers between baristas and customers, but also to stand out among the rest of London coffee shops.
“The Mavam represents our entire approach to coffee. It is not a flashy espresso machine: it sits quietly without needing to be seen, but it does its job perfectly,” says Mathew. “It fits perfectly into our aesthetics. At the time, the Mavam machine was only one year old, there was only another one in the UK…so we really took a chance with it,” Mathew explains to me.
Next to the Mavam, there’s a Nuova Simonelli Mythos One and a Mahlkönig EK43 grinder, a FETCO coffee brewer, and a high tech cold press juicer. The milk is by the Estate Dairy (profiled here on Sprudge), a UK dairy brand founded by Shaun Young and loved by professional baristas.
Customers have the choice of two coffees for espresso: a seasonal blend by Ozone Coffee called Brothers and a single origin coffee by Bocca, which the Tabatabais discovered on a trip to Amsterdam. They persuaded the Dutch roasters to supply their cafe (Tab x Tab is the only coffee shop in the UK to serve or sell their beans). At the time of my second visit in January, the single origin was a natural Brazilian coffee from Fatima Farm (Yellow Bourbon and Mundo Novo variety) with notes of vanilla, roasted nuts, and a medium body.
Tab x Tab also offers a single origin of choice on batch brew. “The batch brew may not be sexy, but it delivers consistency,” which is what Tab x Tab always strives for. “We let the quality of the coffee speak for itself.”
It was head barista Lucas Gorczyca who sold the idea of batch brew to Mathew. “The batch brew delivers consistency. Our customers expect the coffee to taste exactly the same throughout the time we use a certain single origin. The variables with brewing coffee are crazy, the coffee never tastes the same every time,” Gorczyca explains. “Batch brew is also good for our customers because they know it’s a grab-and-go drink.”
Customers looking for the theatrics of a brewing experience will get it with tea, rather than coffee. Although Britain is considered a country of tea drinkers, the majority of tea consumed in the country comes from tea bags. Tab x Tab champions high quality, loose leaf tea, offering a selection of small batch teas—surprisingly absent of English Breakfast or Earl Grey. Instead, you will find black tea, oolong, and matcha, all prepared with care and precision.
Soon the cafe will expand its food offerings to include a modern take on the classic Afternoon Tea, as well as pop-up dinner events. Until then, I will continue to return to Westbourne Grove and stop by Tab x Tab for a great cup of coffee or tea and for their thoughtful and dedicated service.
Tab x Tab is located at Westbourne House, 14-16, Westbourne Grove, London W2 5RH. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

When in Doubt Take Pollution Out Water and air, the two essential fluids in which all life depends, have become global trash cans.” – Jacques Cousteau There comes a time in our lives when acting upon morally right principles supersede the actions that do more harm. The phrase “do unto … as you would want done unto you,” is in full swing here. When talking about the consequences of our actions towards the planet in terms, there is no exception to that moral rule. As an environmentally conscious technology company that strives to impact the planet in a positive way, the quality of our air is of high environmental concern. We know how polluted the air we breathe is. We want to help you understand its toxicity as well. Our values stand innumerably against profit with the planet’s wellbeing at stake. We are one of many technology companies who are determined to raise awareness about pollution. Typically, our involvement in discovering, inventing, and applying new technologies came from an innate desire to make a difference and help others do so in the process. In this blog, we uncover: The frightful truth of air pollution; Why our air should matter to the world’s population; What is being done to bring awareness to our communities about air pollution; What energy conservation means to the quality of our air; and, How Inibii Technology stands firm in ensuring our company does its part. Let’s begin with what air pollution is. Our air is toxic. “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect” – Aldo Leopold On September 1, 2017, the Guardian took notice of a UK community taking air pollution monitoring into their own hands. Sarah Marsh reported on the large increase of people using home air quality monitoring kits to capture dangerous pollution levels. Apparently, there had been a growing number of citizens who were monitoring local air quality because of fear of their government officials inability to capture and relay the “dangerous” levels of pollution. The environmental charity, Friends of the Earth, stated that 70 local groups were now using their testing kits. They noted a “surprising” increase in people monitoring air quality for their own sake. What a stance to take! The UK, and occupants of other countries, are concerned about air pollution. Who wouldn’t be? We can imagine possibly those who are not as aware of what air pollution consists of. So, let’s define it. The Environmental Protection Agency states that “air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in breathable air. Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and mold spores may be suspended as particles. Ozone, a gas, is a major part of air pollution in cities. When ozone forms air pollution, it is also called smog.” Some air pollutants are poisonous. Inhaling them can increase the chance you will have health problems. People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children are at greater risk from air pollution. Air pollution is not just outside, though – the air inside buildings can also be polluted and affect your health. Where you live may also be the difference on the quality of the air you breathe. For example, Inibii Technology is based in Dallas, Texas. Our air quality is at a 68. This means that our air quality is deemed acceptable; however, for some pollutants, there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. Where do you live? Want to find out the quality of the air you are breathing? Insert your zip code in this tool: https://www.airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.main Air Pollution – What Art Thou? Hazardous air pollutants can cause serious health concerns for many people. They are known for causing cancer and other impediments. Types of Air Pollution: Carbon Monoxide Lead Nitrogen Dioxide Ozone Particles Sulfur Dioxide Take a look below to learn about each pollutant. All are written in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s definitions. – I AM CARBON MONOXIDE – Carbon monoxide is a gas and is found in the air we breathe. High levels of carbon monoxide are poisonous to humans and, unfortunately, it cannot be detected by humans. It has no smell or taste and cannot be seen with our eyes. The natural concentration of carbon monoxide in air is around 0.2 parts per million (ppm). That amount is not harmful to humans. Natural sources of carbon monoxide include volcanoes and bushfires. The main sources of additional carbon monoxide are motor vehicle exhaust and some industrial activities, such as making steel. Tobacco smoke is one of the main indoor sources of carbon monoxide. I AM LEAD – Lead is naturally occurring heavy metal that can be found in the Earth’s crust. Lead can be released into soil, air, and water through soil erosion, volcanic eruptions, sea spray, and bushfires. The natural concentration of lead in the air is less than 0.1 microgram per cubic meter. Humans have used lead in various ways for thousands of years. Some of the past uses have left behind serious environmental and human health problems. Mining and metal manufacturing are the largest sources of lead emissions in different parts of the world; however, there are many other sources, including: “waste incinerators, battery recycling, the production of lead fishing sinkers, cement, plaster, and concrete manufacturing, ceramic products; iron and steel; petroleum and coal products, paper, glass and metal products, motor vehicles and their parts.” – I AM NITROGEN DIOXIDE – Nitrogen dioxide is a foul-smelling gas. Some nitrogen dioxide is formed naturally in the atmosphere by lightning and some are produced by plants, soil, and water; but, only about 1% of the total amount of nitrogen dioxide found in our cities’ air is formed this way. Nitrogen dioxide is an important air pollutant because it contributes to the formation of photochemical smog, which can have significant impacts on human health. The major source of nitrogen dioxide in the world is the burning of fossil fuels: Coal – Oil – Gas. About 80 percent of the nitrogen dioxide in cities come from motor vehicle exhaust. Other sources of nitrogen dioxide are petroleum and metal refining, electricity generation from coal-power stations, other manufacturing industries and the processing of food. – I AM OZONE – Ozone is a gas formed when nitrogen oxides react with a group of air pollutants known as ‘reactive organic substances’ in the presence of sunlight. The chemicals that react to form ozone come from sources such as motor vehicle exhaust, oil refining, printing, petrochemicals, lawn mowing, aviation, bushfires and burning off. Motor vehicle exhaust fumes produce as much as 70 percent of the nitrogen oxides and 50 percent of the organic chemicals that form ozone (EPA, 2017). The natural amount of ozone in the lower atmosphere is generally around 0.04 parts per million (ppm), and that amount is not harmful to human health. Vegetation can also emit organic chemicals that help form ozone. In Melbourne, up to 20 percent of these organic chemicals can come from vegetation and up to 64 percent in Brisbane. – I AM PARTICLE MATTER – Airborne particles are sometimes referred to as ‘particulate matter’ or ‘PM’. They include dust, dirt, soot, smoke, and liquid droplets. Some particles are large enough or dark enough to be seen as soot or smoke, while others are so small they can only be detected with a microscope. Some particles are emitted directly into the air from a variety of sources that are either natural or related to human activity. Natural sources include bushfires, dust storms, pollens and sea spray. Those related to human activity include motor vehicle emissions, industrial processes (i.e., electricity generation, incinerators and stone crushing), unpaved roads and wood-heaters. – I AM SULFUR DIOXIDE – Sulfur dioxide is a gas. It is invisible and has a nasty, sharp smell. It reacts easily with other substances to form harmful compounds, such as sulfuric acid, sulfurous acid, and sulfate particles. About 99 percent of the sulfur dioxide in the air comes from human sources. The main source of sulfur dioxide in the air is an industrial activity that processes materials that contain sulfur, for example, the generation of electricity from coal, oil, or gas containing sulfur. Some mineral ores also contain sulfur, and sulfur dioxide is released when they are processed. In addition, industrial activities that burn fossil fuels containing sulfur can be important sources of sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide is also present in motor vehicle emissions, as the result of fuel combustion. In the past, motor vehicle exhaust was an important, but not the main, source of sulfur dioxide in the air. However, this is no longer the case. – I AM CARBON DIOXIDE – Carbon dioxide is often confused with carbon monoxide. These names sound the same, they both are colorless and odorless gases, and at high concentrations, both can be deadly. The difference is that CO2 is a common, naturally occurring gas required for all plant and animal life. CO is not common. It is most often a byproduct of the oxygen-starved combustion of fuel. They are both very different, however. In commercial buildings, lighting is the dominant category at about 25 percent, but space heating, cooling, and mechanical ventilation together account for more than 31 percent. The DOE estimates emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, from burning fossil fuels to generate energy (mainly natural gas on site and natural gas and coal for electricity production). Air Pollution, why should I care about you? “Air pollution is my biggest concern right now. Maybe because I live in Beijing, and in this city, we have such severe challenges due to bad air quality. It has affected our daily lives and health. I do not go outdoors because of it. I desperately hope that we can improve the current situation.” – Li Bingbing, China There are many reasons why we should care about the air we breathe. Here are three: The United States Environmental Protection Agency states that polluted air can make us sick. “It can irritate your throat and make breathing difficult. Pollutants like tiny airborne particles and ground-level ozone can trigger respiratory problems make it especially hard for people with asthma. Today, nearly 30 million adults and children in the United States have been diagnosed with asthma. Asthma sufferers can be severely affected by air pollution. Air pollution can also aggravate health problems for the elderly and others with heart or respiratory diseases.” As if your health was not a price high enough to pay, here are some additional finds by the Healthy People 2000 report, highlighted by Cleaner and Greener. The health costs of human exposure to outdoor air pollutants range from $40 to $50 billion. An estimated 50,000 to 120,000 premature deaths are associated with exposure to air pollutants. People with asthma experience more than 100 million days of restricted activity, costs for asthma exceed $4 billion, and about 4,000 people die of asthma. As air pollution is a global issue, and the global environment and climate are severely affected by it. Take acid rain as an example, it is affecting our crops, trees, lakes and even buildings. According to Air-Quality.org, “acid deposition and ozone exposure have increased considerably in the past 50 years in Asia, Europe and the United States, with many reports of tree/forest decline and increased mortality. In general, the more highly polluted forests have the higher rate of decline and mortality.” What is being done to bring awareness to our communities about air pollution? Explain to future generations it was good for the economy when they can’t farm the land, breathe the air, and drink the water.” – Unknown While some people are coming across information on air pollution via happenstance, others are taking their knowledge to a whole new level. It is called Environmental Activism, and everyone involved finds it their duty to the clean up the environment through raised awareness. Environmental Activism is populating our communities, social media, cinema, policy, and cyberspace – there is no escaping the knowledge, or at least, there is no readily available excuse for “not knowing” about the effects of pollution on the environment. You can very well be an activist too! Building energy conservation strategies are becoming a standard. “For plague and pestilence, plunder and pollution, the hazards of nature and the hunger of children are the foes of the nation. The earth, the sea, and the air are the concern of every nation.” – John F. Kennedy In recent years, organizations worldwide have encouraged energy efficiency in buildings. Whether in building codes or policy regarding buildings, energy efficiency is proven to complement initiatives that are meant to decrease energy consumption of buildings of all sizes. The energy efficiency of new buildings determines the building sector’s energy consumption for far longer than other end-use sector components to determine their sector’s efficiency. Buildings will typically be constructed to be used for many decades and, in some cases, for more than a hundred years. In other energy-end uses, the capital lifetime for efficiency improvement will be, at most, a few decades. Improvement of buildings’ efficiency at the planning stage is relatively simple while improvements after their initial construction are much more difficult: decisions made during a building’s project phase will hence determine consumption over much, if not all, of a building’s lifetime. Some measures to improve efficiency are possible only during construction or by major refurbishment, likely to happen only after several decades. Improvements will be very cost-effective, possibly at no cost, or at negative costs when implemented at a project stage, but can be expensive if never assumed at all. Inibii takes a stand against air pollution. “If you really think the economy is more important than the environment, try holding your breath whilst you count your money.” – Dr. Guy McPherson For reasons beyond the obvious, Inibii strives to demonstrate how a technology firm can bridge the gap between environmental need and human need. We focus specifically on helping building owners develop an energy consumption strategy to help them save money and alleviate the costs of impacting the environment from a pollution standpoint. Minimizing this impact not only helps pave the way for other building owners, but it creates a sustainable climate for our future generations. We will continue to take a stand with those who pay attention to their impact on the environment and will forever continue to provide a forum to do so. CONCLUSION You do not have to be a building owner to make a difference in this world. You just have to pay attention to the impact you are making by involving yourself in the discussions that benefit the planet. When it comes down to it, the air we breathe is highly contaminated with toxins that are detrimental to our health, regardless of the pollutant. Will you take what you have learned and do something about it? It is our hope that you do.
