Netflix keeps breaking new viewership records while at the same time its subscriber growth is stalling out
Puck writes about the diminishing returns of streaming hits:
In fact, 50 percent of all of Netflix’s Top 10 English-speaking debuts premiered in 2022, including Ozark’s fourth season and Bridgerton’s second season. It’s an impressive feat, and yet it’s entirely discordant with the fact that Netflix also had arguably its worst year on record. The company lost subscribers in its second and third quarters, and gained only 100,000 subs in the U.S. and Canada in its most recent quarter. And, despite a recent rebound, its stock is still down some 50 percent from a year ago. Netflix is projecting subscriber growth of 4.5 million in Q4, about half the number that joined in Q4 2021. Revenue has slowed alongside subscriber growth, and churn rates are still higher than normal at the company.

On Tuesday, "Succession," an HBO series about a cunning media tycoon and his squabbling family, received 25 Emmy nominations, one of which was for the coveted best drama award.
It will compete against "Squid Game," the first non-English language Emmy nominee from Netflix Inc, which is a South Korean thriller.
In "Squid Game," competitors who are short on cash vie for prize money, occasionally at their peril.
Both HBO's "Euphoria," about youth juggling sex, drugs, and social media, and the sci-fi sensation "Stranger Things" from Netflix were nominated for the drama award at the televised industry's highest accolades.
Among its 20 nominations, the cheery series "Ted Lasso" will defend its best comedy crown. The show will go up against "Hacks," "Only Murders in the Building," and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".
Hannah Waddingham, who starred in "Lasso" and was nominated for a supporting actress Emmy last year, said she was surprised to receive a second nomination because she felt she had "had my minute."
For everyone of us, it's a little bit of a magical moment, she remarked of the cast of the programme. The "Lasso" cast had ten nominees.
With 20 nominations, HBO's "The White Lotus," which follows guests and workers at a posh beachside resort, earned a spot in the competition for best limited series.
On September 12, the Emmy Award winners will be revealed.
This year, the Television Academy received a record number of entries, according to CEO Frank Scherma, indicating that production was rebounding after being halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The nominees were dominated by streaming television programmes, continuing a trend as viewers migrate to internet viewing. HBO and HBO Max received 140 nominations. Netflix received a 105.
For "Succession," which won best drama in 2020, there were fourteen acting nominations. In the race for outstanding actor, Brian Cox will face off against Jeremy Strong.
Adam Scott, the star and acting nominee of the newcomer "Severance," a psychological thriller about office workers, is speechless after learning that it has received 14 nominations and will compete for best drama.
"It is too much. I was genuinely shocked, flattered, and honoured," said Scott.
A brand-new show from ABC, which is owned by Walt Disney Co, "Abbot Elementary" entered the competition for best comedy.
Quinta Brunson, who was nominated for writing and acting on the programme, stated on Twitter that "crying, shaking, and throwing up has new meaning to me because I real life did all three."
Although voters passed over their co-star Selena Gomez in acting categories, Steve Martin and Martin Short will vie for the title of best comic actor in Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building," which is about true-crime podcasters.
For her portrayal of a 1950s housewife and comedian on "Mrs. Maisel," Rachel Brosnahan is a contender for best comedy actress, along with "Insecure" actor Issa Rae and "Hacks" star Jean Smart.
For the second year running, "Hacks," which follows an established female comic attempting to advance her career, has been nominated for best comedy series.
Jen Statsky, co-creator of "Hacks," said in an interview: "I think it's a really important thing, especially in this moment and time in our country, to showcase women and to tell their stories."
Zendaya, the previous winner for best drama actress, was nominated for "Euphoria," Laura Linney was nominated for the drug-dealing drama "Ozark," and Melanie Lynskey was nominated for the new series "Yellowjackets," which follows high school girls who must survive in the woods.
This year's major categories did not include the concluding seasons of the comic "Black-ish" or the heartbreaking "This is Us." Also overlooked by Emmy voters was the well-known Western "Yellowstone."

Was that to me last night?
After last week, I’m not sure how it could be. I thought about it all last night... then dreamt about Him all day. He confuses me. I don’t understand and I’m mortified about what I did that I can’t remember. I like that He likes Ozark. Completely agree... this season was awesome. I started watching it Friday and was done by Sat morning. Totally thinking about rewatching it. Short term we are all fucked. Credit markets are frozen. I am going to be working so hard to keep my business a float for the foreseeable future. I have been working my ass off and I am in a pretty good position. I am sad for all of those people, and there will be so many, that will be out of work. But, the World will rebound and the ones who survive will be even stronger than before.

Lockdown Pastimes; Novavax Big Time; Travel Stocks Climb
Lockdown Pastimes; Novavax Big Time; Travel Stocks Climb:
Stir-Crazy Investors
We’re all itching to get out and participate in the U.S. economy’s “Great Reopening.” If reports from the Memorial Day holiday weekend are any indication, some of us are a lot more eager than others … I’m looking at you Lake of the Ozarks partygoers.
As the country reopens, now is an excellent time to reflect on some of our biggest lockdown pastimes — one of which could have a major impact on your investing future.
First up, we have comfort spending.
Shopping is by far America’s most popular pastime, and the COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. It’s good to note that silly little things like travel restrictions and social distancing haven’t slowed down America’s appetite for consumption.
“Surprisingly, Americans are spending more money during this time of social distancing than prior to it,” says WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez. In fact, Gonzalez notes: “Forty-three percent of Americans are participating in what is called comfort buying.”
For investors, that means profitable returns for companies such as Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Shopify Inc. (NYSE: SHOP).
Next up, we have online entertainment. I mean, what else are you gonna do after spending all your money while not going anywhere?
Leading the charge here are video games, which saw sales surge 73% year over year in April. In fact, video game spending hit a record $10.86 billion in the first quarter.
Here, you might want to take a closer look at Activision Blizzard Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) or Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: EA).
Also under the heading of online entertainment, we have video streaming and social media. No one benefits more from the unholy union of these two mediums than TikTok.
This China-based social media sensation provides short, user-generated, looping videos and music clips for lip-sync, comedy and talent displays. And if you’re wondering just how popular this seemingly nonsensical idea is … the TikTok app just hit 2 billion downloads during the pandemic.
Unfortunately for investors, TikTok owner ByteDance is a private company. But Great Stuff will keep a close eye on the situation, as the TikTok “fad” isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Finally, we have the most impactful distraction during the COVID-19 quarantine: retail investing.
Yes, dear reader, retail mania is taking over Wall Street, fueled by fractional-share trading, no transaction fees and pandemic stimulus checks. With nowhere to go and nowhere better to spend their money, Americans have funneled a considerable chunk of their stimulus checks into the stock market.
In fact, bank transfers into trading accounts ranked behind only savings and cash withdrawals for Americans with incomes between $35,000 and $75,000.
Now, I have to say that I’m proud of y’all for taking the initiative and jumping into the trading world with both feet.
However, we’ve reached a level of concern when it comes to retail investing. At a time when smart money has almost completely pulled out of the market, y’all lead the charge. And, if you’re not careful, you’ll get burned.
It’s not fearmongering … it’s experience! And why would you want to venture into the market without some experience by your side?
Not in the “Gandalf” kind of way — the “Ian King” way. Ian King stays on top of all tipping-point tech trends, no matter the volatility that gets thrown our way. Plus, the guy started trading mortgage bonds on Wall Street at 21. Where else can you find someone like that?!
Click here to learn more about finding your guide with Ian King.
Good: Get in the Zone
When it comes to car repairs, you’re essentially constrained by two things: money and time. Between the recent economic lockdown and the pandemic stimulus checks, consumers have had plenty of both — much to the benefit of AutoZone Inc. (NYSE: AZO).
The do-it-yourself auto-parts retailer reported fiscal third-quarter earnings of $14.39 per share on revenue of $2.78 billion. Both figures slid easily past Wall Street’s expectations.
But the quarter wasn’t all roses and oil changes. “During the third quarter, we experienced the most extreme fluctuations in sales, both negative and positive, in the Company’s more than 40-year history,” AutoZone said in its earnings press release.
AZO stock initially vaulted more than 5% higher on the news, but uncertainty surrounding the company’s “extreme fluctuations” left some investors leaking coolant. Furthermore, AutoZone said that same-store sales still fell 1% during the quarter.
While the results weren’t as bad as many investors (and Wall Street) feared, there’s still a serious volatility concern lingering over AZO’s head.
Better: Vaccines, Vaccines Everywhere!
Are you ready for another insane vaccine rally?
No? Too bad. Novavax Inc. (Nasdaq: NVAX) returned to the headlines this morning, helping to drive optimism that a COVID-19 cure is just around the corner. The biotech announced that it initiated phase 1 and phase 2 trials for its coronavirus vaccine candidate, NVX-CoV2373.
Phase 1 begins immediately and includes 130 healthy volunteers. If all goes well, Novavax will quickly start phase 2 testing with a much larger patient population.
Honestly, Novavax’s considerable rally today appears a bit overdone. The company is entering phase 1 while both Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: INO) and Moderna Inc. (Nasdaq: MRNA) are already in phase 2 testing.
I still maintain that NVAX is an excellent stock to short, given its lagging position in the vaccine race and the considerable hype in this niche of the biotech sector. That said, if you like backing the underdog, NVAX may be just the play for you.
Best: Blues Traveling
The travel industry went bonkers today. Airlines, cruise lines and you-name-it lines all rallied across the board.
Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) surged nearly 10%. Carnival Corp. (NYSE: CCL) added almost 12%. Heck, even the pink sheets for German travel company TUI AG (OTC: TUIFF) surged 52%.
Why? Vaccine hopes and reopening dreams.
On Friday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that travelers moving through TSA checkpoints last week hit 300,000 for the first time in two months.
While the TSA news was encouraging, this morning’s announcement out of hard-hit Spain was the real spark that ignited the travel sector. The country announced that it will lift its two-week quarantine regulations for foreign travelers starting July 1.
If Spain can start reopening, then the real danger of COVID-19 must be past its peak … right? Combine that with continued progress on the vaccine front and investors surged to get in early on the travel sector’s expected rebound.
The first rule of hustlin’? You either hustle or get hustled.
And you wanna make some big bucks, huh?
That’s right — my mind is still on Main Street’s leap into the retail market for our Quote of the Week. No matter how long you’ve been banking Benjamins in the market, this sudden rush of cash from newbie investors will affect you.
Even Robinhood’s ads are all about the small-stakes hustle these days:
Got .3 shares of tesla stock today. Little by little.
— Robinhood, via Barron’s
Now, I want to be clear here, since a ton of you fine Great Stuff readers out there are the same new investors we’re talking about today. (Welcome to the *$&% show, by the way!)
But … if you’re going to jump into the market, you gotta jump with our jive, right? You gotta pick up some street smarts before wandering the market’s dim back alleys.
Anyway, the point is that no matter if you have 0.3 shares of your favorite stock or 3 million shares … no matter how long you’ve been an investor…
I have just one titanium-plated rule to stick in your trading tool belt. It will separate you from the retail chaff — and give you a leg-up on all those lockdown gamblers-turned-investors: Don’t buy a stock just because everyone else is buying it. You will hear arguments about how “you can’t miss out if you’re ‘in it,’ man!” See the past decade-long bull run for more details.
Now, since the Great Stuff team was in a post-cookout coma yesterday, here’s a bonus Chart of the Week for you that shows my point a bit better.
Thanks to Robintrack.net, you can see the retail investor’s Robinhood revolution for yourself. Right here, you can see the past week’s biggest popularity changes, at least as far as Robinhood stock ownership goes.
Check out the huge spike in Moderna and Delta, with some latecomers to the Aurora Cannabis Inc. (NYSE: ACB) rally not far behind. (Plus, here’s an honorable shout-out to any Luckin owners out there left holding the fraud bag…)
On the right, you can see how Delta’s collapse stacks up to a tsunami of share buying in no time flat:
Now … are these half a million Robinhooders about to bring home the bacon (or tendies) while the smart money sleeps? Is this chart a snapshot right before a “pass the flaming turd” disaster?
Stay tuned; we’ll find out together.
Great Stuff: Let’s Get This Bread!

Before I sign off, I want to say thanks for tuning in to today’s edition of Great Stuff!
We’re only two days away from this week’s installment of Reader Feedback — and we’re calling on you. Bring your rants, raves, crackpot schemes and vaccine dreams — it takes all kinds of greatness to make us Great.

Auburn must wake up ready to play! (Photo by James D. Smith.)
War Eagle, everybody! This week, the Auburn Tigers will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas for a morning tilt against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Razorbacks come into this game at 2-4, and are looking for their first SEC against the Auburn Tigers. After the game against Auburn, Arkansas will close out October with a trip to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama. Arkansas opened the season with a shaky 20-13 win over Portland State, followed by a 31-17 defeat at Ole Miss. The biggest win of the year followed, as the Razorbacks outlasted Colorado State 55-34. Then San Jose State came to town, and Arkansas just could not catch up, falling 31-24. In recent weeks, Arkansas has kept it close in SEC action, but lost 31-27 to Texas A&M and 24-20 at Kentucky.
When Auburn has the ball, it is a strength vs. strength matchup in this game. Arkansas has a tough, active front seven on defense, and Auburn likes to run the ball first. Defensive tackle McTelvin Agim will be a serious test for Auburn’s interior line. While Arkansas is giving up 27.3 points per game, much of the damage done against the Razorbacks is through the air. Cornerback Montaric Brown is a good one, and a team must be able to throw to more than one receiver to have success in the passing game.
Arkansas runs an offense similar to Auburn’s, in that they like to set up play action passes with the run. Unfortunately, the Arkansas running game has been shaky, with star tailback Rakeem Boyd banged up for much of the year. Boyd and Devwah Whaley have accounted for 807 rushing yards out of 892 for the Razorbacks this season. That works out to 148.6 yards per game over the first 6 games. That’s not great, against defenses like Portland State, Colorado State and San Jose State.
Defensively, Auburn has to do a better job of rushing the passer, this week. Arkansas has a surprisingly good receiving corps, with 5 players in double figures in catches. The real Razorback issue has been getting the ball to them consistently. Arkansas has alternated this season with former Texas A&M starting quarterback Nick Starkel, and Ben Hicks pulling the trigger on the offense. Both are capable of getting the job done, but need some help from an inconsistent offensive line.
For the first time this season, the heat has been shut off for the Tigers. Saturday’s weather in the Ozarks should be in the mid 60s for this game. Experts were calling for a good chance of showers early in this one, with a tropical system headed up the western gulf coast and into the mainland this weekend. The latest weather runs I’ve seen indicate that the storm is now expected to hit the Florida panhandle, curve through southern Georgia and exit into the Atlantic. There won’t be any impact from this one in Arkansas. I’d expect partly cloudy skies, with maybe a peek at a morning half-moon. In short, pretty much a perfect day for football! We will have our usual Trackemtigers.com Open Thread up and running for this one, and I will be at the keyboard, for the play-by-play. This game will kick off a little after 11:00 AM, Central Daylight Time, and will be televised on the SEC Network.
A look at other SEC games this weekend, after the jump!
Auburn/Arkansas headlines the early SEC matchups, but Florida at South Carolina is one to watch, as well. The Gamecocks are coming off a big win at Georgia, while Florida is stinging after falling short against LSU. I think Florida will rebound, thanks to a tough defense and South Carolina’s quarterback issues.
LSU visits Mississippi State in the CBS game, this week, at 2:30 PM Central. MSU was stunned at Tennessee last week, and a shaky Bulldog defense may be in for a long day against the buzzsaw that the LSU offense has become.
Missouri visits Vanderbilt at 3:00 PM. The Commodores pretty much have to win this game, to have any chance at a bowl trip this season, but I doubt that they’ll have a chance.
Also at 3:00 PM, Kentucky visits Georgia. I suspect that there will be some bad-tempered Bulldogs on the field, after the debacle last week against South Carolina.
At 6:30 PM, Texas A&M visits Ole Miss. Having fallen to 3-3, the Aggies desperately need a win to keep bowl hopes in good shape. Ole Miss is in similar straits after a 3-4 start to the season.
Pushed way back to an 8:00 PM kickoff is Tennessee at Alabama. Tennessee has not even been competitive in this series for the past decade, and I expect that the Tide will be able to score as much as they want this week.

Inside the 5 days of horror and recovery of injured WNBA superstar Elena Delle Donne
Tumblr media
Inside the five-day injury scare that threatened to submarine the Mystics’ WNBA title hopes.
Up two points with three minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Elena Delle Donne grabbed a rebound on one end and pushed full-speed down the other. Putting the team on her back is what one of the league’s best scorers does, and she was a few plays away from sealing a 2-0 lead in a best-of-5 semifinals series on the road against the No. 2 seed Atlanta Dream.
The 6’5 WNBA unicorn headed full-steam down the right side of the court for a layup. That was when her knee buckled in a way that’s tough to look at.
“Just once,” Delle Donne said when SB Nation asked her if she saw the replay. “I’ll never watch it again.”
here's the play elena delle donne got hurt on and man it's sad pic.twitter.com/xkePG8rlsf
— Matt Ellentuck (@mellentuck) August 29, 2018
Five days earlier, the Mystics’ franchise forward wasn’t sure if she’d be able to play another minute in 2018.
“We can’t win a championship without her,” Mystics guard Natasha Cloud recalled thinking. “We can’t win a series without her.”
The moment was devastating not to just Delle Donne, her teammates, and fans, but for her inner circle. Elena and her wife, Amanda, host her agent, Erin Yates Kane, whenever she’s in town from New Jersey. The trio — bound together by their love of food, Ozarks, and much more — knew how crushing the moment was. Amanda was in the stands in Atlanta as Elena fell, receiving texts about how bad it looked on replay. Until the game ended, Amanda and Kane could only receive updates from Mystics staffers.
For fans, a major injury is a huge bummer and maybe leads to a few panicked tweets and/or texts. For those close to the player, it’s like seeing their loved one’s professional life come crashing down in an instant. On national television. Two wins away from the WNBA Finals.
“My first thought was concern for Elena and what this could mean for the remainder of the postseason, international play with Team USA coming up in the fall,” Kane told SB Nation. “All that flashes through your mind, and then it’s secondarily important to how [she] is doing.”
There was some optimism when Delle Donne was spotted walking after Game 2, but those close to her still feared a ligament tear. The unknown was haunting for everyone in Delle Donne’s camp, and the Mystics’ star watching her injury unfold all over again in her hotel that night on replay didn’t help.
Tumblr media
Michael Zamora-USA TODAY Sports
D.C. basketball was back to its evergreen state of doomsday on Wednesday morning, hours after the injury and two days before Game 3. The Mystics are one of the league’s original franchises, but they’ve never made the Finals. They’re the only team left that hasn’t.
Starved without a superstar since pre-injury Alana Beard more than a decade ago, Washington saw little hope heading into the 2017 season. Then, Delle Donne, a Delaware native, forced a trade from the Chicago Sky so she could be closer to her family. On the spot, she became Washington’s best baller in decades.
That’s what made her sudden injury even tougher to swallow.
On Wednesday, the Mystics flew out from Atlanta back to D.C. to prepare for Game 3. Delle Donne flew with the team, though there was some doubt whether that was best for her. Remember, the WNBA flies its athletes commercially by rule, and the team still wasn’t sure the extent of her injury.
The team arrived in D.C. in the late morning. Delle Donne immediately went to receive the MRI that’d determine the fate of the Mystics’ title hopes. The 6’5 forward told SB Nation that she felt scared, truly believing her season might’ve been done. When it came back cleaner that expected, it was a huge sigh of relief.
“That MRI enabled me to breathe,” Delle Donne said.
She was diagnosed with a bone bruise, a huge relief considering the fears of a tear. Delle Donne texted the team’s group chat, though Cloud requested and received an individual text.
“For me at this point it wasn’t about, ‘Shit we just lost a franchise player,’ Cloud told SB Nation. “It was, ‘Shit this is someone I truly care about and this is her health at risk.’”
Greeted by her wife, her huge great dane, and her favorite sub from Capriottis — a hometown staple for the Delaware native — Delle Donne was gleaming with better news than expected.

— Matt Ellentuck (@mellentuck) August 29, 2018
But with less than 48 hours until Game 3, she had her work cut out for her if she wanted to play. Washington sports fans remember Nationals star Bryce Harper missing 42 games in 2017 with a bone bruise. Delle Donne had mere days.
Delle Donne’s knee was swollen, she was in pain, and clearly she wasn’t near 100 percent. She didn’t practice on Thursday, and though her mind was set on returning for Friday night’s game, ultimately she was ruled out and the Mystics lost, 81-76. Another loss on Sunday would’ve ended the Mystics’ season.
“I knew if she could walk, she was going to play,” Kristi Toliver, Delle Donne’s All-Star teammate, told SB Nation.
“I knew if she could walk, she was going to play.”
But even getting her to walk normally took a fleet of recovery methods. The day before Game 4, Delle Donne went through a list of rehab activities long enough to kill an entire morning. The list, according to a Mystics staffer, included:
Two hours in a hyperbaric chamber
Ten minutes applying heat
Twenty minutes receiving a Graston massage
Rehab joint mobilization
Oblique work
Glute work
Stretching
Shock Wave therapy
Walking in an Alter G
Icing in a machine called Game Ready for 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off, when she wasn’t engaged in any other type of therapy.
One hour in a float tank
One hour on a hybrid mat
Delle Donne highlighted the importance of two of those workouts specifically: the hyperbaric chamber and the float tank. The hyperbaric chamber is a full-body machine meant to promote healing by inhaling 100 percent oxygen. The float tank is also meant to generate healing by promoting a state of deep relaxation.
Saturday evening was as calm as one can be while icing a deeply painful knee injury hours before a do-or-die playoff game with the WNBA Finals on the line. Delle Donne’s wife, agent, and father joined her at Chart House, one of her favorite restaurants, on the water in Annapolis, Md. She got her usual French Dip sandwich and followed it up with her favorite peppermint stick ice cream. The group went home and, at Delle Donne’s father’s request, watched Alabama football dismantle Louisville.
“Just finding a way to get in as much recovery as I can in a small amount of time,” Delle Donne said. “Ice, a lot of laying around and elevating. Staying off of it so the bones can recover and I can be ready to go.”
Still, Delle Donne’s status for Game 4 on Sunday morning was unclear. Mystics coach Mike Thibault had the team practice the day before as if Delle Donne couldn’t play. He didn’t know she’d be good to go until after she’d ran, worked out, and gone through her normal shooting routine that morning.
“It was a nice present to see her in a uniform ready to go,” Thibault said.
Delle Donne returned in a knee brace, and she noticeably wasn’t running the same or attacking the basket as frequently. But even at less than 100 percent, Delle Donne is that good. She scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 21-point Mystics win, making 3-of-5 shots from 3-point range and lighting the Charles E. Smith Center on fire with her late-game pull-ups.
After missing Game 3, @De11eDonne returned with 15 PTS & 10 REB to help @WashMystics tie the series! Game 5 vs. @AtlantaDream: Tuesday at 8 PM ET on ESPN2! pic.twitter.com/5RgmaoQtbg
— WNBA (@WNBA) September 3, 2018
Even when she wasn’t making shots earlier in the game, her presence forced Atlanta’s defense to overthink and leave her teammates wide open. Without Delle Donne in Game 3, Washington’s backcourt trio of Cloud, Toliver, and rookie Ariel Atkins combined to shoot 10-of-32. With her back in Game 4, they were 19-of-38, and all four scored in double digits.
After the victory, it was much of the same for Washington’s MVP: Immediate icing after the game, stretching, and rehab workouts. Then, back to watching Ozarks with her wife and agent.
There’s another game to play and another flight to Atlanta to catch. But with Delle Donne back, D.C. basketball’s championship aspirations are, too. Game 5 is back in Atlanta on Tuesday night (8 p.m., ESPN2), with the winner to play either the Seattle Storm or Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Finals.
It’ll be a hectic night of hoops for a growing WNBA, and one that should stand out more with Delle Donne back on the floor in search of her first title and her team’s long-awaited first Finals trip.
