Rise in the east...

This is the first time I'm writing 2021 in 2021, after wanting it to dawn way back in 2020. And here we are, 3 days into 2021, with the discussions moving on to the Vaccine part of the entire story. Will it be Pfizer or Astrazeneca or Biotech or Oxford Pharma or any name for that matter, the falling potency or atleast the falling media potency of the virus is giving rise to a new debate, whether to take the vaccine or fight over our favouraite topic of religious bigotry and harm the struggle against the virus. With alleged news of Vaccine not being 'halal' to using beef components to being used to administer infertility in people, we have enough armoury in the debate factory to fuel high temper discussions for days to come.
Be it whatever comes out of it. Last few days have been an eye opener on a not so much discussed part of India - Odisha. We rarely get any news about this state and somehow, after the north east maybe, Odisha has managed to remain an enigma. It has only one proper airport, just too less for a state of its size and geography.
Odisha always was remembered for the Kalinga war, where Emporer Ashoka was revolutionized from a war mongering, all capturing conqueror to a peace loving and able king. So much so that his empire's emblems are still in use in modern day India. It was an experience to visit the Kalinga battlefield where all the killing had occured and where Ashoka had transformed, not only himself but history itself.
Puri, with all due respect to its divinity, is still a very unravelled town. There is buzz in the air and Lord Jagannath seems to be everywhere, so is Bengali food. You hardly get to eat anything else. The beaches are pristine, and the crowds, though getting larger in number, are yet nothing as compared to the ones in Goa.
With all the stories and ďivine legacies of Lord Jagannath and for that matter all the ancient dieties of the region, they seemed to all have been hijacked by the self styled gatekeepers of the religion. Here they are referred to as the Pandas. They are out on the hunt , sometimes in groups or even alone to scavenge every pious diety down to their last penny. Their ill ways and the ultra conservative approach seems to have put a leash on the lifestyle of the region and almost choked the oxygen of free thought and expression.
A story which was completely new to me was of Kala charan Roy ( sometimes referred to as Rajib Lochan Roy) or historically known as Kalapahad, a Hindu Brahmin convert to Islam and who wielded his sword of vengeance to destroy the artistic temple heritage of the region. All this happenend in the 16th century but his destruction of the Konark temple is so ruthless, that what we see of the temple today is not even half of the original structure.
It was majorly due to the ill conceived and hardline approach of the religious priests that an able commander was lost to the enemy and the same commander wrecked havoc on his earstwhile way of life. Its a story which needs to be told and from which lessons should be learnt that any revolutions shouldn't be negative in its approach and strangling freedom and expression can lead to dire consequences. The hardline approach still grapples Hinduism till date and we hope there never rises a Kalapahad again.
The region has also been battered by numeruous, almost yearly cyclones. It is almost an assumed tragedy which the people are used to and are ready for. But this also contributes to the dearth of industry and commercial activity which in turn seems to plague the economy overall. And these people spit a lot, hell of a lot. It is definitely a matter for introspection, but for that they have to realise that it needs introspection and change. If at all they do that..
The best part of the tour was undoubtedly Konark. The ruins of the once majestic temple are still majestic. Wonder it would had been the largest structure worldwide if it had stayed intact till date.
The carvings from bottom to the top are made in order to suit the audience of each age group. From animals images right at the bottom for toddlers, to fables and story images for kids to studious sculputres for young kids, to sports and war training sculptures for teenages to scintilatingly erotic sculptures for peoples in their twenties and Divinity for all else..it is an University made out of rock for all ages and eras. Wonder how much we have lost to tide and time and all due to the fact that we didnt conserve our heritage and didnt understand our culture properly.
Odisha seemed still living in an era which lags behind other shining metropolitan regions of the country. But it still firmly has a foot rooted in history and tradition, a bit too much for comfort though. Nature still breathes fresh here and a large part of the state is still forested.
Chilika lake is another natural wonder. A salt water lake with immense flora and fauna seems welcoming with open arms, but for the tricky local businessmen who only seemed ready for duping the tourists. Nevertheless, the sight of siberian cranes and dancing dolphines to the warm and soft sand of the beaches ensure that you leave the stress of modern day life aside for a while.
The east is yet to catch up with the west, but it surely has the potential and it could do itself a big favor if it doesnt mimic the west. But it would also and surely need to wriggle out of the hardline mindset and allow its people to think free. There is abundance here, the only thing that would be needed, if at all, is to let the fresh breeze from the sea to flush out the binding mindset and breeze ahead.
Rest, Lord Jagannath is the beacon of hope and shelter to all those under His flag.
