oh THIS is probably what happens with copper too i’m guessing, as per my long question i wrote you that you are under no obligation to answer, i got a bit overexcited and didn’t realize you’d probably receive a lot more (’:
i LOVE flame painting copper and wish i was better at it, the best artists have the time for each color down to muscle memory since it’s a delayed reaction, you take the torch off it and then the color appears properly. my problem is that copper oxidizes so fast that the colors dull or change quickly and since the color itself is an oxide that’s so thin, even pouring resin over it would destroy the effect!
but i have heard good things about and met an artist who used renaissance wax; she also sold anodized titanium and her stuff was gorgeous, it looked freshly painted! so that’s a possible solution that i haven’t tried yet because that wax isn’t cheap lol
in case we’re sharing i also want to bring up my favorite optical phenomenon, which is high pleochroism in gemstones! so far i know of 3 in which it tends to be fairly obvious:
alexandrite, which shifts all the way from magenta to green with shades of purple and blue in between
tanzanite, deep blue to lilac
Oregon sunstone, and please watch this video just for the music lmao. not all specimens exhibit pleochroism, which in this case is caused by inclusions of my beloved copper, which is sometimes too large and dense to create the cloudy nebula-like color you see in gem-quality stones. i wouldn’t be as impressed with these except i’ve seen them in person and the transition from yellow to green, red/pink to orange, and even peach to green is STUNNING 
and now i’ll stop before i go on a tangent about feldspar hahaha

The discoloration you see here comes from my favorite optical phenomenon (we all have one, right?), thin-film interference. The Wikipedia article linked in the last sentence does a good job explaining it, but I’m gonna do it here anyway because infodumping is my M.O.
When white light (all colors mixed) strikes a reflective surface that has a thin transparent layer on top of it, the incoming light gets split—some of it reflects off of the top of the thin layer, and some passes through the layer and reflects off of the base surface, passes back through the layer and then back out.

This means that the light that went through the thin layer and back out traveled a slightly longer distance than the light that bounced off the top of the thin layer. That extra distance means that the peaks and valleys of the light waves are now shifted off from each other. This shift results in constructive interference (peaks lining up with peaks, valleys lining up with valleys, causing them to reinforce each other) for some wavelengths (colors) and destructive interference (peaks lining up with valleys, causing them to cancel out) in others.

So now instead of getting white light (all colors mixed, no distinct color), you get only certain colors of light, and those colors are controlled by the thickness of the film. This is because the thickness affects the extra distance the light passing through and back has to travel, and thus how much shift there is, and thus which wavelengths get enhanced and which ones get canceled.
