Today we celebrate the Holy Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos and Virgin Mary over the town of Blachernae in the kingly city of Constantinople. In the tenth Century, the Holy Saint Andrew the Fool was deemed worthy to see a vision of the Most Holy Theotokos protecting the city with her veil and sash, saving them from the would-be-looting pirates. This day, for many centuries, was celebrated on October 1st (the day it was recorded to happen) however the Ecumenical Patriarchate decided to translate the feast to today to coincide with the second Greek national day - Όχι day - when the brace Metaxas denied the Italians entry into Greece, saying a firm "No!" to the fascist Mussolini and thus saving Greece from a fate that would have destroyed the Greek nation. Thus the Holy Orthodox Church attributes the salvation of the Greek lands to the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos. May she intercede for us and save us + #saint #theotokos #saintmary #greeknationalday #oxiday #oxi (at Constantinople - Κωνσταντινούπολη) https://www.instagram.com/p/CG3DoFppHHe/?igshid=1sc5v157qhfrw

While others celebrate their independence or the end of a war, Greece celebrates the day they entered into war. Today in 1940, Greek Prime Minister and General Ioánnis Metaxás replied «όχι» (no) to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s demand that Italian troops be given free passage through Greek territory. Greek courage and bravery changed the course of the second world war that day. #oxiday #oxiday🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 #oxiday2021 #greekbravery #greekcourage #επέτειοςτουόχι Όχι (at Athens, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVkjW0csARY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Bank/Public Holiday Tomorrow - Ochi (Oxi) Day is celebrated on 28 October each year in Cyprus, in Greece and by Greeks around the world. It is a day to remember the famous pronouncement made by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas during the Second World War. While there will be no gatherings this year due to Covid, we hope everyone enjoys the day off. #Holiday #OxiDay #Cyprus #Cyprus101 #BankHoliday #PublicHoliday #October28 #ochi #paphos #pafos (at Cyprus) https://www.instagram.com/p/CG2-JqyHKRv/?igshid=1x4xmyhn8wquf

OXI Day, 28th of October 1940! #🇬🇷 Ohi Day or Oxi Day is celebrated throughout Greece, Cyprus and the Greek communities around the world on 28 October each year. Ohi Day commemorates the rejection by Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas of the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on 28 October 1940, the Hellenic counterattack against the invading Italian forces at the mountains of Pindus during the Greco-Italian War, and the Greek Resistance during the Axis occupation. 🇬🇷 #οχι #όχι #oxi #oxiday #evzonesofgreece #evzones #greekparliament #syntagma #syntagmasquare #greekflag #28october1940 #28october #october28 #october281940 (at Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4MAyz6AmhY/?igshid=1ounb0edn9ss4

Χρόνια Πολλά Ελλάδα 🇬🇷 Happy National Day 🇬🇷 ... 💬 #OXIDAY : Here's what exactly #Greece celebrates on #October28, one of the proudest moments of the country's #history when little Greece shattered the myth of the invincibility of the #Axis and helped shape the outcome of #WWII. It is the quintessential David vs Goliath story! (στην τοποθεσία Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4KSvNSHJOK/?igshid=hjf2tnde528o

Repost @guardian . A girl holds a Greek flag as she watches a school parade during a #Greek national holiday in central #Athens. . The 'Oxi Day' parade commemorates the 28 October of 1940, when Greek dictator Metaxas refused Mussolini's request to occupy Greece with a simple 'Oxi' (No).
