Beauty, dress codes, and fashion: Examining twenty fictional White female librarians [Part 2]
Continued from part 1
Apart from the above-mentioned older librarians, there are some librarians who have a bit more style. This includes the unnamed librarian in a Steven Universe episode ("Buddy's Book"), one of the protagonists of I Lost My Body, an animated film set in France, Gabrielle, and Marion the Librarian in various episodes of Hanny Manny. The most casual of these is the Steven Universe librarian who is shown wearing what looks like a green cardigan and glasses, with a green undershirt of some kind shown in the comics. However, she may be more casual in the comics than in the animated series, as she could be wearing a collared shirt in the episode, as shown below:
Reprinted from my Pop Culture Library Review WordPress, where this post was published on Nov. 29, 2022.
Her style is in line with librarians who say [7] that they wear cardigans, black dress pants, oxford shirts, dressy shoes, casual pants, slacks, blouses, sweaters, button downs, leggings, tights, and skirts. I haven't seen any fictional librarians in dresses that I can recall, however nor in sundresses, jumpers, t-shirts, shirt and tie, khakis, with tattoos or with piercings. It is likely that the Buddwick Public Library in Beach City has a business-professional dress code that prohibits shorts, sneakers, t-shirts with writing, backless shoes, and blue jeans. We can't know for sure, because we never see the librarian, or any other librarians, outside of their work behind the information desk. [8]
Compare the unnamed librarian in Steven Universe to Gabrielle in I Lost My Body and Marion the Librarian in Hanny Manny. Both characters wear business casual more than casual, looking comfortable in their workplaces while they look professional. However, it is unlikely that either of them have "highly regularized" librarian dress, but rather that there are continuing struggles over what it means to "dress professionally" in their jobs. Even so neither are wearing t-shirts, jeans, gym shoes, jeans, or even open-toed shoes in line with varied dress codes, or anything similar to the variety of adorable outfits out there which are inspired by librarians. Instead, they have a practical, curated, and straightforward style, likely recognizing that what you wear has a "lot to do with identity" even if they aren't aware of the cultural stereotypes out there of librarians. [9]
There are other librarians who have style, even if in a more "traditional" way. This includes elderly librarians enforcing rules, like the librarian in Uncle Grandpa episode ("Back to the Library"), Miss Dickens in Carl Squared episode ("Carl's Techno-Jinx"), Ms. Hatchet in Kim Possible episode ("Overdue"), Mrs. Shusher in an episode of The Replacements (“Quiet Riot"), and the unnamed librarian in a few episodes of Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil. The same can be said for the stickler librarian in an episode of Rugrats, Ms. L in an episode of Dexter’s Laboratory (“Book ‘Em") and the briefly appearing librarian in an episode of Martin Mystery (“Return of the Dark Druid"). [10]
What they are wearing is reflect of what Brytani of The Intrepid Nerd pointed out: that often librarians are portrayed in fashion catalogs, Pinterest, and elsewhere with "vintage looks." This includes dresses or skirts, sweaters / cardigans / blazers, "smart" shoes, and glasses. She concluded that people give librarian's this look because there is "something nostalgic about reading books" and working somewhere that is full of them, or a more disturbing conclusion: that people dress librarians this way "because they think the career is outdated." Hopefully, the creators of Uncle Grandpa, Carl Squared, Kim Possible, The Replacements, Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil, Rugrats, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Martin Mystery don't think this way about librarians.
This dress doesn't take away from the fact that the librarian in Uncle Grandpa and the librarian in Rugrats are super kind [11] even though they are dressing conservatively. This is in contrast to the sadistic Ms. Hatchet in Kim Possible and the unnamed librarian in Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil or the strict shushing librarians Mrs. Shusher in The Replacements, Miss Dickens in Carl Squared, Ms. L in Dexter’s Laboratory, and a librarian in Martin Mystery.
What they all have in common is what they are wearing fulfills what eHow has called the "classic librarian costume," admitting it goes along with the librarian stereotype. [12] At the same time, how they dress may be about appearing professional and some of those libraries may even have formal dress codes.

Exploring Timeless Elegance: Oxford Button-Down Shirts
What are Oxford button-down shirts? Oxford button-down shirts are quintessential wardrobe staples known for their refined style and enduring versatility. Characterized by their distinctive button-down collars and durable fabric, these shirts effortlessly bridge the gap between casual and formal wear.
History and origin of Oxford shirts Originating from the prestigious Oxford University, Oxford shirts were initially worn as sportswear in the late 19th century. Their popularity surged in the early 20th century when they transitioned from athletic attire to everyday menswear essentials, thanks to their timeless appeal and classic styling.
Features of Oxford Button-Down Shirts
Fabric construction Oxford button-down shirts are crafted from Oxford cloth, a durable and breathable fabric woven with a basketweave pattern. This unique construction gives Oxford shirts their distinctive texture and resilience, making them ideal for year-round wear.
Button-down collar One of the defining features of Oxford shirts is their button-down collar, which helps maintain a neat and polished appearance. The collar points are secured with buttons, preventing them from flapping or curling and adding a touch of sophistication to the shirt's overall silhouette.
Versatility and durability Oxford button-down shirts are renowned for their versatility and durability, making them suitable for a wide range of occasions and settings. Whether dressed up with tailored trousers or dressed down with jeans, these shirts exude timeless elegance and understated style.

These timeless elements add a touch of refinement to the shirt's overall design, ensuring it remains a wardrobe staple for years to come.
Factors to Consider
Fabric weight and texture Consider the weight and texture of the fabric when choosing an Oxford shirt. Opt for lighter-weight fabrics for warmer weather and heavier fabrics for cooler temperatures, ensuring comfort and versatility year-round.
Fit and sizing Ensure a proper fit by consulting the brand's size guide and measuring yourself accurately. Oxford shirts come in various fits, including slim, regular, and relaxed, so choose a style that complements your body type and personal preference.
Collar and cuff styles Explore different collar and cuff styles to add personality and flair to your Oxford shirt. Whether you prefer a button-down collar with a single button cuff or a spread collar with French cuffs, there's a style to suit every taste and occasion.
How to Style Oxford Button-Down Shirts
Casual daytime looks For laid-back outings, pair your Oxford button-down shirt with chinos or shorts for a relaxed yet stylish ensemble. Roll up the sleeves and leave the shirt untucked for a casual vibe, and complete the look with sneakers or loafers.
Business casual attire Elevate your Oxford shirt with tailored trousers or khakis for a polished yet relaxed office look. Layer it under a blazer or sweater for added warmth and style, and accessorize with a leather belt and dress shoes for a sophisticated finish.
Formal occasions For formal events or special occasions, opt for a crisp, tailored Oxford shirt in a solid color or subtle pattern. Pair it with dress trousers or a suit and add a silk tie or pocket square for a touch of elegance and refinement.

Everything You Ever Need to Know About Men's and Women's Shirts
Men's shirts have been around for a long time, however, until the eighteenth century men's shirts were only worn under outer garments. The fact that they were seen as items of underclothing explains why it is seen as a faux pas for a man to remove his suit jacket uninvited. In 1871 Brown, Davis and Co. introduced the world to the first man's shirt with buttons all the way down the front. Today, these have evolved to become the formal and casual men's shirts and ladies shirts we know today.
Men's and ladies: fabric weaves and washes
The finest men's shirts are 100% cotton which ensures they are soft, breathable and durable. Here are some of the cotton fabric weaves, washes and styles you'll find in formal and casual shirts that are available today.
Poplin Crisp, cool and comfortable, poplin is the classic cotton shirt fabric that is ideal all year round, for many occasions.
Oxford
A shirt with an Oxford weave is generally a little heavier and warmer than a cotton poplin weave so it is ideal in the cooler autumn and winter months. Oxford cloth Bio T-shirts usually contains a combination of dyed and undyed threads to give a more relaxed casual shirt.
Pinpoint
The pinpoint weave is a combination of both cotton poplin and Oxford. It is woven using long staple cotton (for extra softness) and, as with the Oxford shirt weave, only the warp yarn is dyed.
Herringbone and twill
These are textured men's weaves that produce a diagonal structure and gives the shirts interesting accents. Both weaves are warmer than classic poplin so are favoured in the colder seasons.
Peach finish
A shirt with a peach finish has usually undergone a process in which the fabric has been very lightly distressed - this gives it an extra soft feel. Men's and ladies shirts with a peach or carbon finish are usually casual shirts.
Vintage wash
Vintage wash men's and women's garments are very similar to those with peach finishes. They are exceptionally soft to the touch and have a 'worn-in' look which is very comfortable, cosy and relaxed.
Men's and ladies shirts: how to fold a shirt correctly
Ideally, men's and ladies shirts should be kept on hangers in the wardrobe, but there are occasions when shirts need to be folded. There is a knack to folding both smart and casual shirts that will ensure they will stay smooth and wrinkle-free. Lay the shirt face down with the buttons fastened, then fold one side over until about halfway along the shoulder. Fold the rest of the sleeve over itself so it lies flat in a straight line parallel to the side of the shirt. Repeat for the other side so the shirt forms a rectangle. Then fold the shirt in half so the bottom hem touches the collar.
Men's shirts
Men's shirts: how to find the right shirt for your build
Tall If you are tall and lean choose a garment with cutaway collars, or spread collars, to help you look broader. If you are tall and muscular, a fitted shirt can help you look more powerful.
Athletic build Athletic builds can pull off fitted or semi-fitted men's clothes rather well. Choose small collars (like cutaway collars) if you have a short neck.
Short build Short and lean men should wear fitted or semi-fitted shirts as classic fit men's shirts will only drown them. Wider men look best in classic fit shirts with vertical stripes to help slim the frame.
Rotund build Wide builds should choose classic fit shirts with pleats, ideally with vertical stripes. Also opt for classic collars which are large enough to draw attention away from the waist.
Why every man should own a white shirt
Until the end of the nineteenth century the white top was a sign of wealth because only a man with enough money could afford to have his washing done frequently - and white looks dirty the quickest. Today, men's formal white shirts are still viewed as an elegant option. Not only does a white shirt suit every man, it is easy to wear a man's white shirt as it will go with just about anything and be appropriate for many occasions.
Ladies shirts
Ladies shirts: a history
It is thought that women first began to wear shirts around 1890 when freedom fighters donned red wool shirts under the charismatic Giuseppe Garibaldi. Today, ladies shirts have evolved into many different styles including blouses, sleeveless shirts, casual shirts and more, in a variety of fabrics. As with men's shirts, the most popular choice are women's shirts in 100% cotton as they're soft, durable and can be easily dressed up for work or dressed down for the weekend.
Ladies shirts: why women's shirts button up the opposite side to a man's shirt Since it became normal for women to wear shirts in the early twentieth century, the buttons on women's shirts have been attached to the opposite side to those of a man's shirt. There are a few theories that may explain this. One is that this made it easier for maids to dress them, whereas men tended to dress themselves.

Fashion 60s
While many women in the 1980s opted for an athletic look on weekends, many men dressed in what was called a "preppy" style. Like their weekday business attire, this style of clothes reflected the conservative values and the importance of appearing to be wealthy that many sought in the decade. With classically styled jeans, khakis, or long shorts, men sported the typical preppy shirt: the polo shirt (also called a tennis shirt) with a three-button placket, ribbed collar, and a small logo (polo player, alligator, or royal crest) on the left breast. The ever-present logo, which altered depending on the brand of shirt, became one of the many status symbols of Americans. People were so concerned with emblems of their financial success that a plain shirt was often difficult to find.
The preppy style recalled the clothes traditionally worn by students in Eastern collegiate or preparatory schools (hence the name preppy): tan khakis; rugby shirts; turtlenecks; white, pink, or pale blue button-down oxford shirts; navy blue blazers; and penny loafers, often worn without socks as The Official Preppy Handbook (1980) suggested. The look also included the popular tennis sweater (a white V-neck with blue-and-burgundy
Designers
Calvin Klein was one of the most successful fashion designers of the 1980s. His sportswear ranged from high-end to more affordable lines for men and women, with jeans and underwear becoming his signatures. Calvin Klein was known for advertisements with high-profile celebrities, including Brooke Shields and Mark Wahlberg as well as young models like Kate Moss.
Calvin Klein's influence was undoubtedly also felt in the higher echelons of fashion. His restrained minimalism translated into marvelously simple A-line silk slip dresses that worn with lipstick and heels, like the one donned by Gwyneth Paltrow at the 1996 Oscars, one of InStyle.com's "200 Celebrity Looks We Love." Stars like Paltrow, and supermodels like Carolyn Murphy and Christy Turlington wore Calvin Klein in the '90s and early 2000s, pioneering the confident, unfussy glamour that epitomized his designs. Today beloved young actresses like Emma Stone, Rooney Mara and Jessica Chastain continue to carry the torch as they appear front-row at Calvin Klein fashion shows and frequently wear Calvin Klein on the red carpet.
Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren was the first American designer with a European boutique in 1981. He ushered in “preppy” style; his brand Polo Ralph Lauren appealed to conservative teens with a taste for expensive polo shirts, chinos and jackets. Eventually the look even crossed over into hip hop–inspired streetwear.
Thierry Mugler
Thierry Mugler helped to reinvent womenswear with a new silhouette in the '80s . He created more feminine shapes with accentuated curves and sharp, angular shoulders—a far cry from the free-flowing dresses of the 1970s. Mugler was labeled the “prophet of futurism” for his revolutionary take on fashion, using vibrant colors and theatrical elements.

MAKEUP IN THE 60S
When we think of 1960s makeup, we think of the iconic Twiggy model, false eye lashes, eyeliner, natural lips, and tricks to make eyes look bigger. This makeup style became one of the hottest trends in vintage fashion.
The 60s were characterised by the all new ideas and thoughts that emerged, and for being the era of youth. At this time individual expression and personality was reflected through fashion. The 60's look of beauty was varied, from women who preferred natural looking makeup, to the those who opted for a more striking look with dark eye shadow and well-defined eyebrows.
As popular iconic looks from the vintage years always seem to find a way to come back 'in' and mix with current trends we wanted to review the characteristics of 60's makeup and give you some tips. Take note!
FACE
At the beginning of the 1960s women used a lot of face powder. As the decade progressed powder was later only applied enough to cover imperfections. Around the year 1963, coral, pink or peach blush began to feature in every woman's beauty range and used to create a natural blush or glow.
EYEBROWS
1960s eyebrows are characterised by being clean, groomed, shaped, and well defined with an eyebrow powder or an eyebrow pencil.
EYES
The eyes were the focus of makeup in the 60s, as false lashes, a lot of mascara, and eyeliner were used. The most popular shadow colors were shades of blue, green, gray, and white. It should be noted that many women also used false lashes at the bottom or painted them with eyeliner, like the Twiggy.
The distinctive eye makeup of the time was achieved keeping a pale upper eyelid with a dark streak just in the arch of the eye, from the inside to the outside point of the eyelid. White eyeliner was also applied to the inner line of the eye to make it appear larger and more open.
LIPS
Since the eye was the highlight of the 60s beauty and makeup, the lips kept a natural look, they were often lined and coloured with lightly with coral, pink and peach tones to enhance women's natural beauty.
