Review: OVO, Cirque du Soleil, Royal Albert Hall, London
By Liz Arratoon
Tumblr media
No matter how often you see Cirque du Soleil at London’s Royal Albert Hall – and my first time was its first time at the venue, with Saltimbanco in 1996 – there is always an unmistakable frisson on entering the auditorium, and an air of anticipation. OVO is not a new show, having been created in 2009 by the Brazilian dancer/choreographer/director Deborah Colker – the first woman to direct a Soleil show. But anyone who remembers seeing any of her dance productions in London – including Mix in 2001, Casa the following year, Rota in 2003 and Knot in 2006 – will understand that she was a natural choice. All her work has such strong circus elements, whether it be her acrobatic and athletic dancers or her use of ropes, revolving wheels and climbing walls, one of which is used to great effect here.
OVO started as a tenting show, was redesigned for arenas and has now been retweaked to fit back into the round. We are met with the sight of a gigantic egg – the ‘ovo’ of the title – before being enveloped by a teeming world of insects. A backscreen of video projections, showing flowers, foliage and undergrowth, and two huge suspended blooms – set and props by Gringo Cardia – give insect-scale to the humans. The egg hatches an intricately costumed fly (François-Guillaume Leblanc) who instantly falls for the curvy ladybird, played by the pixieish Brazilian Neiva Nascimento, and an almost obligatory loves story unfolds.

It has to be said that while other contemporary circus companies have developed their style, nothing much has changed for Soleil. When it first came here, the shock of the stylish costumes and make-up caused an almighty stir, with page after page in the colour supplements full of pictures, to say nothing of the skill of the artists, which was simply head and shoulders above most others. There was jealousy and sneering from traditional circus, but regular people – non-circus types – couldn’t get enough of them. And here they are decades later still attracting huge audiences.
Colker injects a breath of fresh air to the Cirque – I’ve always struggled with their appropriation of that word – style. This is an uplifting show with music, composed by MD Berna Ceppas, to match. Instead of the usual relentless rock, she uses light and shade and different rhythms – samba, rhumba, African beats – for each act. We can forgive the gibberish language because most everything else is such fun. I mean, if you’re going to pick someone for a spot of audience participation make it the gorgeous Alexandra Burke, who simply lights up the stage as she throws herself into the fray.
Tumblr media
But let’s get to the insects – costume designer Liz Vandal has certainly had a field day wth their outfits – and their acts, which are aways the strongest element of any Cirque show. Insects, with their ability to fly, hop, jump, flutter and so on, are a perfect match for circus. (Let’s not forget Mark Copeland and Sarah Munro’s Insect Circus). Things start on a high with red ants, who cleverly combine foot-juggling and Risley moves with the lightest of touches. No hefty trinkas supporting them here; they simply position themselves on the floor or on each other and flick large ‘slices’ of Kiwi fruit and corn one to another. A dragonfly hand balances beautifully on an elaborate structure made of ‘tendrils’, a butterfly emerges from a chrysalis on silks, and diabolos become darting fireflies in the hands of Frenchman Tony Frebourg, who is dressed as a firefly himself.
Eek! There are four spiders: a male one, Jiangming Qiu, is astounding on a swinging slack wire; a discipline few may have seen before, judging by the wild applause. The delicate structure from which his wire is suspended frames the act like a picture. A white spider, Mongolian contortionist Ariunsanaa Bataa, performs sinuously on a ‘pebble’ and includes a revolving Marinelli bend in her repertoire, and two ‘character’ spiders, Marjorie Nantel and Brit Alanna Baker, are constantly on the move, weaving themselves into the action.
Tumblr media
But my ‘gasp’ acts include the Canadian butterfly duo – Catherine Audy and Alexis Trudel – on aerial straps, who present a breathtaking pas de deux that involves total trust as they swoop through space and hang from each other, held frequently simply by a foot or a wrist; I love this mix of skill and danger. Then a troupe of scarabs – Russians, Ukrainians and the Canadian Nansy Damianova – make up a high-flying standing cradle act, with four catchers and six female flyers, and oh, how they fly! This is perfection, as the tiny ‘bugs’ execute thrilling somersaults and are deftly caught, sometimes from overhead and behind the catchers, who are unsighted until the last moment.
And the finale, which blends an air-track (fast-track) with a trampo climbing wall is a riotous carnival of joy. Another big multinational troupe, this time of crickets, sets the audience alight. With expert timing, they bounce from two trampolines to land on an eight-metre-high wall, as if they have sticky feet, before flinging themselves down to rebound again. Even with all this heady activity going on, your eye is mesmerised by black spider Baker, whose stunning abilities on the wall, as she hangs upside down or hovers in the splits, are a shiver-making sight.
Colker, to her credit, has managed to emerge from the Soleil ‘factory’ and put her own effervescent mark on OVO, her superb choreographic skills shining throughout every act and ensemble number. So get down to her colourful creepy-crawly world and enjoy the party!

OVO runs at London’s Royal Albert Hall until 4 March 2018 and will return later in the year for an arena tour between 16 August and 7 October
