I Have a Love
But the love that remains would shape the memory that stays
Even now I can see your face when those chords are replayed
Arm around me shoulder in teenage embrace
"Tell All Your Friends", I'd say
I have a love, and it never fades
Now a long way from school days
Sharing books at big break
With the two of us, and Barry and Craig
Talking tunes and poems with too much weight for our age
And a year ago or so
I played this song for you on the car stereo in the night's breeze
This bit kicked in with it's synths and its keys
And you smiled as ya sat next to me
You in the front, Gilly in the backseat going ninety to the sounds as we roared down the street
The other boys stompin feet, and me in utter disbelief at the joy from the break in the beats
We got out and stood, by the Kia Rio caged stage
And I felt like I had it all
Cause I have a love, and it will never fade
And neither will you, Paul
For Those I Love

Spring and summer, along with warmer weather are just around the corner. And you know what that means? Festival announcements, followed by festival season. Presented by Bell and Coors Light, OSHEAGA Music and Arts Festival‘s 17th edition will take place August 2, 2024 – August 4, 2024 in Montréal‘s gorgeous Parc Jean-Dreapeau. Over the course of 16 previous editions, OSHEAGA has become a global reference for great music and top-notch festival experiences: Attendees come to the Montréal and the festival to experience something that they simply can’t find anywhere else. Located on two islands, one which is man-made, just off the shore of Montréal Island and Vieux Montréal, Parc Jean-Drapeau was the site of the Expo 1967. The park has one of the most stunning views of Montréal’s skyline and Mont Royal, and while in the park, you’re able to catch a wide variety of artists, both emerging and established across an array of genres. Festival organizers and books have curated this year’s festival with the explicit mission of appealing to fans of every genre, style and generation. Grammy nominated, rinsing folk pop artist Noah Kahan will be headlining the festival’s first day, August 2, playing what will be a rare festival set this summer. Fans of singer/songwriter pop can also catch Hozier, who played a sold-out show at Laval’s Place Bell last year; Teddy Swims, the genre-bending artist, who has dominated Tik Tok; Melanie Martinez, the alt-pop phenom, who has amassed over 12 billion streams and more; and singer/songwriter and actor Reneé Rapp, who starred in the Broadway production of Mean Girls — and played a much-talked about, sold-out show at MTELLUS last October. If you dig punk and alt rock — and you were a child of the 90s or came of age in the 90s, OSHEAGA has got something for you: 90s punk icons Green Day will be headlining the festival’s second day, August 3. Fully expect to hear tunes from Dookie, American Idiot and more. But personally, I’d love to hear songs off Warning. Beloved old-school punks Rancid, rising Los Angeles rockers The Linda Lindas, riot grrrl legends Sleater-Kinney and The Smashing Pumpkins are the day’s biggest names. The Smashing Pumpkins return to the OSHEAGA stage for the first time in 17 years. SZA, the biggest name in pop at the moment will be headlining the festival’s third and final day. And if you dig genre-bending pop anthems. T-Pain will be making his OSHEAGA debut. The festival’s bill features a wide variety of Afrobeats and Afropop including Grammy Award winner Tyla, who won the first ever Best African Music Performance Award for her global smash hit “Water;” Nigerian artist Ayra Starr; Haitian artist Michaeël Brun, who played a sold-out Festival International de Jazz Montréal show last year. If you’re a hip-hop head who digs both chart-topping and underground emcees from across the globe, OSHEAGA will have something for you: This year’s lineup will feature Denzel Curry; Bronx emcee Lil Jay, who played Place Bell back in 2022; Swedish, experimental beat-driven sensation Bladee; British emcee Skepta, who has made a name for himself for pairing UK grime-driven bars with Afrobeat influences; Belgian emcee Hamza, who spits bars in a silky French; and Moroccan emcee ElGrandeToto. If you dig electronic dance music, OSHEAGA will have something for you: Wildly popular Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix, who headlined last year’s îLESONIQ Festival will be playing; acclaimed French electronic duo Justice will be playing OSHEAGA to support their first album of original material in seven years; British electronic music artist and producer Labrinth, best known for the music in acclaimed series Euphoria will be making a rate live appearance this year, too. Additionally, there’ll be live performances from Overmono, Iréne Drésel, Confidence Man, The xx‘s Romy and DJ sets from Uncle Waffles and Mochakk. This year’s edition will also proudly showcase homegrown acts. Roughly a third of the 2024 lineup features artists from Québec and C...

Hiiii perchance 5, 10, and 27 from the writers' AO3 wrapped? 😬
hello, my dear!
5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? - hm, i'm not sure! maybe the first chapter of limits? i think i posted then had a work call and already had a bunch of comments when i got back which was cool
10. What work was the quickest to write? - technically the answer is bribing the door, which i wrote in like an hour then posted--it's a short silly one. but really, sugar on my tongue. i decided to write it and it was done/posted less than two days later. i think the sequel also, i wrote half and didn't touch it for a week or so, then wrote all of the smut in one morning because i'd decided to post it that day
27. What do you listen to while writing? - this varies for sure! i'm moody with music in general, so it also depends on if i am listening to something to zone out to, or to motivate me. from what i remember:
fever - blasted classical piano for 60% of it including all the smut
sugar - talking heads & matt maeson
limits - first chapter, a ton of james blake, second chapter, CCR and zach bryan
recently have been on a big overmono kick, i write without listening to any music a lot too. thanks for asking xo

Roots | How Joy Orbison's 'Hyph Mngo' Sparked An Underground Revolution
The year is 2009 and one debut single is about to revolutionize electronic music forever, its maker - a 22 year old kid from South London, Peter O'Grady.
The late naughties were arguably the most exciting time for the development of dance music. Dubstep had firmly embedded the sounds of its deep basslines into the veins of the UK underground at the hands of pioneers like Skream and Benga. Labels like Hessle Audio began to emerge, pushing the boundaries of what exactly a club record could be. Had the constraints formed by the origins of dubstep, the very foundations of the genre, begun to render it stale?
June 25th, 2009, Rinse FM, Blackdown in the mix - "I'm not gonna lie... This tune is massive." That was the very moment those iconic synth lines drew their first breath, and Joy Orbison became hot sh*t. Nearly 15 years later it remains a dancefloor anthem and has become a timeless classic.
Broken punchy bass drums, rising euphoric chords, and the lushest of pads all held together by a vocal sample from Janet Jackson's 1989 'Love Will Never Do (Without You)'. There are few records that saw as much club time as this A' side, yet somehow it slipped through the cracks and dodged the status of 'rinsed' - or maybe it didn't but it's just too f*cking good to leave on the shelf.
Nevertheless, it didn't avoid criticism (does anything?). Simon Reynolds wasn't a fan and labeled it "undeveloped" - however he was quickly rebutted by Tom Lea of FACT Mag who said "It’s the dude’s first single: he’s got a lifetime to hone song structure. For now, he’s created a moment." I like that statement - the idea that this track is more than just a piece of music, it's a moment, an encapsulated experience, one that lives on decades after its creation. That, for me, is what makes this record such a rarity.
'Hyph Mngo' tells the story of a young producer who broke the rules and rose to stardom. Today we know Joy Orbison as one of the best in the game, with a back catalog of immaculate solo works and collaborations like Joy Overmono's 'Bromley' to prove it.
I leave you with this quote from Carlo Rovelli's '7 Brief Lessons On Physics', one that I believe highlights the beauty of the beyond - the same innovative beauty that the substratum of Joy O's 'Hyph Mngo' was forged upon in 2009.
"Here, in the vanguard, beyond the borders of knowledge, science becomes even more beautiful - incandescent in the forge of nascent ideas, of intuitions, of attempts. Of roads taken and then abandoned, of enthusiasms. In the effort to imagine what has not yet been imagined."

Overmono — Good Lies (XL)
youtube
On a more objective, scientific, world-perpetuating level, you can of course understand why pollen is good: Insects and birds and animals take it and transport it and pollinate other flowers or eat it for sustenance and maintain the delicate balance that is our circle of life. You also know it can directly benefit you via dietary supplements and medicines for everything from PMS to an enlarged prostate. But on a more immediate, visceral, emotional level: It’s not good when it’s everywhere, infesting your clothes, wrecking your allergies, blanketing you and turning the world to a hazardous haze of yellow. It’s irritating, in fact.
Overmono’s debut album Good Lies is pollen. I don’t just mean that figuratively; “Cold Blooded” literally appears on Spotify’s Pollen playlist, an anodyne compilation of assorted tracks that fit a certain history-washing aesthetic and work great functionally as Urban Outfitters background music fit to pass any 20-something’s vibe check. But even without the playlist, you can see the parallel, hear the connection, feel the album title’s perfection in your gut: This is a record that promises so much but delivers, upon repeated listens, so little as to be a strangely vacant experience.
It’s not like you couldn’t see it coming if you were paying any attention, though. Russell brothers Ed (aka Tessela) and Tom (Truss) have been veering steadily away from their engaging, more demanding early productions on crucial labels like Perc Trax, Poly Kicks, R&S and Whities (now AD 93) toward a kind of hands-aloft big room festival sound that’s been smoothed over and played out live to the point that they only need hit the button that plays Tirzah’s vocal from “Gladly” over the “Is U” beat to get crowds going wild. From personal experience, I can tell you a big room goes off when the drop in “So U Kno” happens. People lose their minds. It should feel monumental, and there’s no shortage of people out there that’ll be only too happy to tell you how transcendent it feels.
That it doesn’t isn’t strictly a problem with yours truly reporting from the field; it’s also indicative of the listening experience Good Lies presents, which feels like a less creatively ambitious, more sonically conservative rendition of Water the Planets. That concise 25-minute mix from late 2016, when the duo was still trying to figure their big room sound out, remains one of the best arguments for why Overmono was so great for years: You’d get a stretch of rhythms that had you invariably nodding your head along to gently evolving and mutating melodies that could get stuck in your head for days after the fact. Think of the muscular “Powder Dry” or the Nintendo pop of “Catapult” or the song that made me a believer, the simple and soaring “U-Plastics.”
Little such surprises exist here, and that’s not because followers of the group had already heard half the tracks present before the full-length appeared. Even St. Panther, the only official collaborator on the album, has her vocals pitched into a homogenous blur at a deliberate emotional remove, submerged behind percolating synths and carefully programmed percussion. From Slowthai to Smerz to Miraa May to Kelly Erez to Casisdead, the template of “evocative” vocal snippets floating disconnectedly above the music is established immediately, a death grip maintained that suffocates out the creative spark that could’ve been here instead. Of that gaggle of tracks, “Calling Out” does the best in a vacuum, a massive track that stands out even in the context of the album and one that’d be immediately noticeable in any DJ’s set.
Only “Vermonly” really feels like it breaks free from the shackles of the established template here. A drumless drift late in the tracklist that feels like a breath of fresh air for its reliance on the army of synths Overmono relies upon rather than the cheap gesture of yet another sampled vocal feels novel in context. It’s a brief moment of respite from the relentless yet strangely underwhelming monotony of the rest of the record. Naturally, first-week sales were through the roof and it’s evident the group has never been bigger; that such success should happen to these guys is ultimately good, probably, but that it should happen via a record so devoid of personality it automatically assumes the role of background music isn’t. It’s irritating, in fact.

apropos of nothing other than nearly everything else about this year is inexpressable, my aoty.
perhaps because of that i felt very drawn to music with minimal vocals or repeated vocals. more of a meditative type thing...idk tired of living in a world (supposedly) advanced in so many ways but spiritually defunct. needed to not be hung up on too many lyrics. anyway eyes and ears stay tuned in&on for foals so there was plenty of that just not any album specifically
SHELFLIFE 7 - Calibre
Calibre always does good things. He knows what he sounds like and he knows what ITs supposed to sound like and then he nails it.
favorite tracks : cure amen • we call it rising • nearly nothing
THE DISTANCE - Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs
this is such a nice offering from teeds which makes me feel he should concentrate more on this than remixes nd the like but maybe that doesnt interest him as much as all the other things you can get into as a dj/producer creative. solid.
favorite tracks: into the light • the distance (well really only emerald do i not love love)
Clive From Accounts Eps: THE TROUBLE WITH CLIVE, COOKING THE BOOKS, STRICTLY BUSINESS
Clive gets it.
favorite tracks: keep movin • toucan • tell me • strictly business
AUDIO-CARTOGRAPHIC EXPERIMENTS VOL#1:RISE&FAFALL- Kit Monteith
this album just hits all the right keys and has the correct tone for this year. if you play it sans field recordings or even with them, it sounds like the lil time inbetween sleep and awake where youre unaware of everything but the sensory
favorite tracks: leaving home & frozen time i love but straight playthrough on this is perfect
COLLECTIONS FROM THE WHITEOUT - Ben Howard
Ben never disappoints. I just fully love what this dude is all about. I like him. I like who he translates to me as a human. so I like what he creates and he knows what sounds good and he isnt being anything
favorite tracks: far out • rookery • sage that she was burning • metaphysical cantations • the strange last flight of richard russell
A QUICKENING - Orlando Weeks
this album is absurdly beautiful and completely unexpected. wish his follow up struck me similarly. the music and his voice on this has such an authenticity to it. this will be an oat album. helps that its beautiful without even knowing what hes saying
favorite tracks: all the things, summer clothes, safe in sound, blood sugar
*there were a handful of other albums that i listened to a fair amount and liked most but not all of the tracks on and then there were a ton of tracks/singles i listened to ALOT but not gonna list em. probably most are in my songs to love tag. i listened to collected reworks alot alot. i neglected alot of albums i wanted to listen to. oh well
COLLECTED REWORKS - FOALS
Added this because i realized it was this year i listened to this as much as i did. ive experienced an extra year somehow between 2020 and 2021 or theyve blended into one or idk. the passing of time is doing me in.. so ya this is def an aoty for 2021. this record is a big extra blessing that was an entirely undeserved surprise and absolutely cherished. legitimately a masterclass on remixes/reworks made from the best source material you can get. i love this album v much and in fact probably listened to this more than any of the other albums ive listed here
too many favorite tracks to list. its all good
#mitv#aoty#favorite albums#joy orbison was good overmono too#edited for corrections#and prbly should have added shell/florals too really

like rn where rwbydub is at where it sits in the back of my skull is like:
yang is trip-hop inspired when she's young--think portishead, massive attack, sneaker pimps--branching into more varied approaches like bonobo and zero 7 (especially when blake is around with their more eclectic collection of genres) so her style shifts a lot depending on her mood! also think mononome, maybe theo parrish too? she definitely spreads out into house music at SOME point.
and blake is grounded more in jazz and bebop--nothing in particular, just a huge mess of influencing from all over the place--initially before getting into sampling, remixing, and sound experimentation (think more like quantic's incredibly broad range of inspirations) before they start doing DJ stuff in mistral and are introduced into more dance-oriented genres like drum and bass that still has a heavy core of sampling to it, later leading them to broaden their style and incorporate darker, more textured samples to their work in the style of old school dubstep and later burial, vacant, niels binias, etc.
ruby at the moment is most like look mum no computer in the sense of building her own gear and equipment and whilst i do like LMNCs post-punk style (and were this au more oriented towards rwby rock au at this point id probably go for it) i still think ruby would be a very varied musician who plays with a lot of weird and wacky stuff... i'd imagine she'd have her fair share of stuff that's really off-the-wall like flume's later work, but would also be inspired by yang to work in more solid boundaries like perhaps ross from friends, bicep... overmono, maybe? unsure. definitely think she'd make a return to her roots in the style of no mana, though, lmao.
weiss remains an ABSOLUTE mystery to me. initially in the first version of this au she was centred around being The Vocalist but im tempted to have her actually make some stuff of her own in this? for now i'm going to tentatively pop kelly moran here. that is extremely subject to change. but yeah,
#this may clear up everything or clear up nothing. unsure.#jamie xx somehow DID NOT APPEAR on this list but to my credit#unsure who'd have that sound. yang mmmmmmmmmaybe???#rwbydub

I’m usually not much of a preplanned mix person, I massively prefer playing to a crowd and interacting with the atmosphere. Combine that with the extremely not insignificant fact that this is one of the most important and longest running mix series around, this was quite a challenge! I spent a long time gathering these 40 songs and playing with the arrangement (even made a couple new edits). I included songs that have been staples in my sets, plus old favorites from before I was a DJ. Eternal shouts to Nathan Micay, Aurora Halal, Overmono, E-Talking and Koehler for letting me include your dope as hell unreleased new music (plus two unreleased songs from myself). The last song is by Oakland band Them Are Us Too and this mix is dedicated to those who lost their lives a year and a half ago. Your music and love lives on. FUCK technocrat capitalist greed in the bay. One of Ghost Ship’s spiritual predecessors, Ghost Town, was one of the first gigs I ever played, back in 2011 right around the time when I was realizing that I loved making music and DJing. If someone told me then that I’d eventually make an Essential Mix and be touring around the world, I’d be incredulously curious to see just how that would unfold. It’s been wild. Thank you to everyone who has listened and danced with me since then. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 recorded on two cdjs and an xdj, xone 92 & extra help from the teil1 delay and blue sky reverb (at BBC Radio 1)
