Let’s talk smack about Outlander S5E1!
I’ve got cake and a Bulleit bourbon on the rocks and a lot of things to say, so I’m just gonna let it rip.
1. Baby Jamie’s hair is the wrong color and it’s gonna drive me nuts. But, Murtagh is breaking my heart.
2. I really disliked the new theme song on first listen and honestly, it grew on me this time around.
3. I know we’re supposed to have totally forgiven Roger for whatever the fuck happened in season four, but I do love that Jamie is totally ripping into him ... pretty much constantly.
4. “The Big House” is patently absurd. Beautiful, but totally and utterly absurd. Can’t wait for it to burn the fuck down!
5. Claire’s in “nothing but a loving wife and mother” mode here, and it’s totally boring me to tears. I miss her.
6. WHY do we run through “Something new, something old, etc.” twice? Who wrote this?
7. So the tea is that I haven’t watched season four since it first aired, but I’m pretty sure Bree was still pretty pissed at Jamie when the season ended. So, why is she all “I don’t have to imagine you” and “I’ll always be your wee girl?” It’s sweet, but also out of nowhere. MOVING ON.
7a. WHAT DID THEY DO TO ELLEN’S PEARLS?
8. What the shit is up with the whole “THE FRASERS OF THE RIDGE ARE HERE” and applause and shit? Bree’s barely a Fraser and she’s about to become a MacKenzie and I don’t understand the form of this wedding procession at all. Ah, yes, we are shoehorning in lines from the book. How original. And Claire’s little pep talk to Roger is SO FUCKING TRITE. “The two of you together can conquer the world,” my butt. WHO IS WRITING THIS I HAVE NOTES.
9. HOW DARE THEY FLASHBACK TO “THE WEDDING.” HOW THE FUCK DARE THEY. The whole fandom’s got every frame of that episode burned into the back of their corneas and they have the audacity to invoke the ghost of a way better show in this... mess? OK I want Bree and Roger to work as a couple on this show but it would really be in season five’s best interest to keep season one off its proverbial lips.
EDITED TO ADD 9a. Jamie complains about Bree and Roger’s ceremony being in English and not Latin, and then the show immediately flashes back to Claire and Jamie’s wedding... IN ENGLISH. UNFORCED ERROR. Just, skip the flashbacks. It’s better this way.
10. Gov. Tryion is interesting. As bored as I was with the cliffhanger last season (because yeah, Jamie is gonna hunt down his beloved godfather, sure), this is good.
11. JAMIE IS TELLING EVERYONE ROGER IS A HERETIC. The pettiness! The shade! I live! {I swear they need to give Claire something to do because if I’m stanning JAMMF we have a problem.}
12. Reminder that Aunt Jocasta is a slave owner. That is all.
13. Roger’s comment about doing the whole wedding again “when we go back” is ACTUALLY INTERESTING. He thinks he’s going back sometime soonish? Oooo, good conflict, show!
14. I’m still trying to figure out the rules to the drinking game led by John Quincy Meyers. You say a rhyme without messing it up, and you can forefit or fail and then forfeit, and then you pass it to someone else in the circle? But if you get it right you have to come up with a new one? It sounds like fun and I wanna hang with Fergus and Marsali because they are so clearly the cool kids. LOVE THEM.
15. “Some Shakespeare?” Poor LGJ. Too proper for his own good at all times.
16. OK. The flashback to Bonnet raping Bree is SO VERY UNNECESSARY. It was already in the “Previously on Outlander” bit. This show is way too fucking casual with violence against women. It’s gross. That ep is a whole half of why I’ll probably never watch season four again, and then they just throw it in again. Bree’s reaction is ENOUGH. The rape was unnecessary in season four, it was way too graphic in season four, and it’s very much unneeded here.
17. Reminder that Aunt Jocasta is a slave owner. That is all.
18. I know The Beatles are probably way out of this show’s budget (they spent it all on that damn house), and as cute as Roger’s singing is... OH GOD THE SEX MONTAGE.
19. I would like to propose a new rule. If show is going to continue to do graphic sex scenes, which they had fucking better, ONLY ONE GENERATION AN EPISODE. For example, if Claire and Jamie are banging, Bree and Roger can’t. If Murtagh is getting it on, Claire and Jamie have to wait. Bree and Roger and Fergus and Marsali can do it in the same episode, that’s cool, they’re the same generation. But the three generations of graphic banging in one montage is WEIRD. MOVING ON.
20. I was so excited in season three when the show totally supplanted Duncan Innes with a pair of fake Rupert and Anguses, because Duncan Innes is not a character that works for me in the books. So I’m pretty deeply disappointed that he’s back in season five. I am very worried we’re setting up Duncan being cuckolded by Jocasta and Ulysses, you know, the man she owns as a slave, but they could also be setting the stage for Duncan being cuckolded by Jocasta and Murtagh -- and I want so much better for Murtagh!
21. LIZZIE WEYMMS AND JOSIAH BEARDSLEY! WE’RE GONNA GET LIZZIE AND HER TWO HUSBANDS! It’s one of my more fave plot lines in book six, which is truly faint praise considering how much I dislike “A Breath of Snow and Ashes,” and it cracks me up every time. She, just, outfoxes everyone so slyly! It’s good and cray cray shit.
22. Reminder that Aunt Jocasta is a slave owner. That is all.
23. Doctor Claire! Love her. But it’d be nice if the show was back on her bullshit, not everyone else’s.
24. If this season ends with Murgagh’s head on a spike in New Berne, I’m gonna be pissed.
25. Here’s the thing about the blood oath. Roger does it in the book kind of for Jamie’s benefit, to prove himself publicly in a language Jamie understands. Bree isn’t into this shit. Why is he doing it for her?
26. Claire’s assertion that “The men of the Ridge would do anything for” Jamie assumes so many facts not in evidence. Why are they making her so dumb? It’s FRUSTRATING.
27. MY CAKE FELL.
28. OK, the kilt thing is good. Doesn’t make up for my cake falling. My fave part was the multiple shots of Jamie’s knees, like show knows about all the knee smut or something.
29. Well, they went full cross burning. Couldn’t stop them, I suppose. I am entirely horrified anyone thought this was at all appropriate or not entirely inflammatory (no pun intended); intellectually I was surprised how much the celtic cross mitigated the visceral horror of cross-burning imagery for me, personally. It’s still not good and they should not have done it because WTF. There’s really no getting around how fucking racist this is. Please fuck off with this shit.
30. “Stand by my hand Fergus, son of my name and of my heart” was the sweetest. FERGUS!
31. WHY DO THEY HAVE A SECOND CROSS ALREADY MADE? WHY ARE CLAIRE AND JAMIE RANDOMLY STANDING BY IT? WHY IS IT ON A CLIFF? IS INSTAGRAM A THING YET? THEY REALLY DID THIS FOR THE AESTHETIC.
32. NOOOOOOOOO. Jamie releasing Murtagh from his oath. MY HEART. Again: If this season ends with Murtagh’s head on a spike I’m going to be very pissed.
33. Murdina and Arch Bug were in the credits so that will be exciting at some point, one assumes!
34. But my god, GIVE ME CLAIRE OR GIVE ME DEATH.

Thoughts on S05E01
Missed my recaps? Don’t answer that. This first episode is making my head spin hard and fast with thoughts, so let’s roll! If you wish to stay solely in “the greenest of grass” towards this episode, consider ignoring the following musings, because I’m bringing my lawn mower.
- Look, I might have to give back my OL fandom badge (I’ll be, however, taking my fanfic with me), but I didn’t really enjoy the leading up or the wedding itself. Most of it felt forced and soapy, and let me tell you why - the show didn’t bother to establish these relationships enough last season to make those moments meaningful. Jamie and Bree’s relationship was so strained by the end of S4 and the healing never really took place on camera, so the scenes between them felt unearned and gratuitous. His “wee girl” never really became his girl, did she? SHOW👏🏻DON’T👏🏻TELL can’t be ignored sometimes.
- Claire’s hairdo for the wedding is the worst, while her wigs are fluffy and beautiful for the rest of the episode. I get it, it’s classic wedding family album disaster, but yikes. Bree’s dress is incredible, and I don’t really watch this show for prime historical accuracy anyway, so yay!
- The throwback to JC’s S1 wedding vows seemed lazy and too much fan bad service to me. It’s like IN YOUR FACE FANDOM, while Sam and Cait don’t really need that visual aid, because they sell the memories with their faces alone.
- Fersali remain the cutest to ever cute. I mean, Lauren Lyle has the kind of spark I wish Sophie had at times.
- They are really going for a Roger’s Extreme Makeover The Ridge Edition, but I’m Arya Starking all over it and assuring you the fandom remembers. Jamie is our collective opinion when he reminds Claire that Roger doubted his love himself, which might as well be one of his lesser sins. I’ll serve it on a pie, if need be.
- THAT MONTAGE OF EVIL. I cannot stress enough how much it didn’t work for me. The song playing over it and the editing took away any meaning for the three couples. It was cartoonish and bizarre. “Here kids, take some fine pointers on the art of sexing on your wedding night from your parents and could-be-grandparents”, OH MY GOD NO. I fell on my back about just as hard as the Bear Grylls of Carolina next to LJG.
- Lizzie, your weirdness and vagina-teeth are showing.😂 After the Montage of Doom, I’m starting to warm up to impending twins-hochmagandy.
- Look, I’m about as surprised as you are as I write these words, but the Regulators storyline and Fiery Cross were probably my favourite parts of the episode. And the unspoken kilt scene between Jamie and Claire my highlight of the hour; they felt so complicit, so connected, hard as diamonds. Everything I missed in them for the majority of S4. A BIG, BIG, YAY.
- I can see the ways in which they tried to bring back the feel of Season 1. Some of it worked - more humour and lightness, Scottish traditions and vibe, slower pacing. But the cinematography just isn’t as stunning as it used to be back then, the camera work, the image colours, the shots. I appreciate the effort put into bringing the writing quality up and hope to see more of that throughout the season. There’s still work to be done.
Did I love this episode? No, I didn’t. It was the kind of meal that keeps me from starving, I don’t wince when I chew every bite (EXCEPT FOR THE SEX TO END ALL SEX IN A BAD WAY), but I wouldn’t want to see it on my table for my last supper.
Did it make me more hopeful for good things this season? Yes, for a good part of it. JC and the fantastic acting of Sam and Cait still have me believing.
Here’s to hoping!!

Doughtlander has lasted a LONG time, having been just over a year since the airing on Starz of Outlander’s “Man of Worth” season 4, episode 13. In fact, this reviewer decided she probably needed to go back and watch all or some of season 4 to refresh herself on what happened! It’s worth noting for this first episode of season 5 that composer Bear McCreary elected to go with an “a Capella” version of the show’s theme song, and as usual, it was lovely.
The beginning of season 5 opens with The Fiery Cross. It is a joyous, and for the moment, calm time, as the Fraser family prepares for Brianna and Roger’s impending nuptials. Spoilers ahead!
Reviewcap
Outlander refreshes viewers about the events of last season, primarily that Stephen Bonnet (Edward Speleers) raped Brianna (Sophie Skelton) (Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser’s (Catrione Balfe) child) soon after she and Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) had finally consummated their love. Because of this, it is unclear who is the father of Brianna’s child. After convincing Jamie that he unconditionally loved Brianna and the baby, Jamie granted Roger permission to marry Brianna. We are reminded that Jamie’s godfather, beloved Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Duncan Lacroix) leads a rebellious faction known as the Regulators. Because of this, he is a target of the local English military, and specifically Governor Tryon (Tim Downie). Tryon is the same person who granted Jamie the land (Fraser’s Ridge) that he possesses and where he has settled many Scottish immigrants.
The episode opens with a reminder of Jamie and Murtagh’s close relationship. Murtagh had sworn to always protect Jamie, both as a child and an adult. As usual, it’s entertaining to look at the opening titles and try to guess where the glimpses will lead.
Murtagh Swears to Protect Jamie
As this show has left us constantly anxious, we spend a great deal of time worrying that something awful will befall the Fraser’s wedding. Roger tries to shave, but Jamie takes over and they discuss Roger’s general unpreparedness for any trade in the 1700s. Roger is determined to learn. Jamie hands over the lovely ring for Bree.

Claire finalizes the dress and both Bree and she enjoy the closeness of the moment. Jamie has collected the old, new, borrowed and blue. Jamie is sad about his all-too-short time with Bree, and Claire and Jamie discuss Roger’s need for support and his love for Bree. When Jamie gifts Bree her items, he adds a silver sixpence from Murtagh, who they are both sad can’t attend. Bree also gets to wear her grandmother’s pearls. Bree makes Jamie’s day by stating she “je suis prest,” the family motto.
Jamie Gifts Bree with Heirloom Pearls
The ceremony is lovely, and, the celebration afterwards, joyful and raucous. It’s nice to see old friends, and Aunt Jocasta Cameron (Maria Doyle Kennedy) is also in attendance. An amusing discussion of “hair of tics” reminds us that the ceremony is NOT catholic (it’s Protestant). Cleverly woven into the ceremony is a flashback to Jamie and Claire’s unwilling wedding, but made sweet by their recital of an essential and heartfelt vow.

Bree and Roger Wed
Jamie and Claire Renew Vows
Governor Tryon has unexpectedly attended the wedding. He let’s Jamie know that the feels Jamie has been holding back on the hunt for Murtagh (which, of course, he has).
Marsali Manages Tongue-Twister
As Bree and Roger share the wedding cake, it’s clear that Roger is so worried about what Jamie thinks of him. He also refers to returning to their own time. Jocasta asks for Roger to visit her at her pavilion when he has a chance. It’s lovely to see Fergus (Cesar Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) and Lord John Grey (David Berry) trying the tongue-twister drinking game.
Jamie and Lord John Gray have what is supposed to be a private discussion, where John lets Jamie know that apparently Stephen Bonnet isn’t dead. Most unfortunately, Bree overheard them. She tries to collect herself, mostly successfully, by holding her son tight.
Jocasta and Murtagh together
While we see everyone having a good time in one way or another, we are treated to a demonstration of Richard Rankin’s excellent voice. Ulysses (Colin McFarlane) escorts Jocasta to a shed, where she meets with Murtagh. They have a very entertaining interlude. But, unfortunately, she eventually lets him know that she’s been asked to marry Duncan Innes. She hasn’t decided, though. But, Murtagh lets her know he won’t stand in her way.
Roger Objects to Jocasta
The next morning, Roger comes to visit Jocasta. She basically slaps Roger by implying that he wouldn’t take care of his son unless he comes with money. This infuriates Roger, who tears into Jocasta (who actually LOVES this.)
Josiah Beardsley (Paul Gorman), the hunter, visits Claire with tonsillitis, and Jamie wants him to stay and hunt. Lord Tryon then pulls Jamie aside and issues an edict that Murtagh and his men must be found and then hung. Tryon tells Jamie he chose him because he was a Scot and knew them – which silently enrages Jamie.
Roger comes back from his visit and swears his allegiance to his son in front of Bree. Jamie informs Claire that Tryon left a troop for the hunt, and that Jamie must participate in the hunt or Tryon would take the land back. Heartbreakingly, he must leave in a week. Jamie really has no choice. He realizes he must keep his Scots loyal to him and not the governor. Claire and Jamie agree that Roger will be expected to serve, but isn’t ready.
Therefore, Jamie pulls out his impressive Scots kit. He gathers the settlement by lighting a fiery cross, reminding the settlement about the old laird loyalty tradition. Conducting the ancient ceremony in which every member declares their allegiance to him, Jamie assigns Roger as a Captain, in order to protect him. Roger shocks Jamie by reciting the oath from memory. (SCHOLAR …). Jamie states he won’t light the cross again unless they are called to battle. He sets up a cross on a hill.
The Fiery Cross
Jamie goes to meet with Murtagh to let him know what is happening. Murtagh brings up that Jamie keeps discussing the upcoming war that will change the face of the land. Jamie really wants Murtagh to hold off. Murtagh sets up the rocks in a familiar pattern. He notes that because of all the people who came through the rocks, Jamie has everything he ever wanted. Murtagh wants and needs to do what he has to. Jamie releases Murtagh from the vow made so long ago when Jamie was just a lad, begs him to be hard to find, and cries as Murtagh departs.
Jamie Releases Murtagh
Thoughts on this episode: The episode was very enjoyable. Even though there were some tense moments, it was a happy, celebratory time and event, really laying the groundwork for future storylines. The Fiery Cross helped to resolve some of the antagonism between Roger and Jamie, drawing them closer, when they need to be. Visually stunning, the show picked the perfect location (ironically shot in Scotland, not North Carolina). Gorgeous and wild, it’s easy to accept that you are back in the 1700s.
