Steal smoked fish 🐟🐟🐟
I see your destinies above you / like angels who don't love you, for sure. This song is such a classic. It hearkens back to We Shall All Be Healed, but in a gentler, more compassionate way. The kindness that distance brings, you know? I do also want to give a shout-out to God bless all petty thieves, because that's just such a good line. Anyway, back to the angels. I love it when JD personifies things that aren't people: destinies, fears, thoughts and feelings. He does it in a few songs, Until I Am Whole (Hold your hopes underwater / Stand there and watch them drown / Fishing out their bodies / From the bathroom sink / Leave them in a bucket / 'Til they start to stink) and I believe Outer Scorpion Squadron (Cultivate a space for the things that hurt you most / Rake the sands 'til they surface / Bind their tiny eyes, and then drowning again -- Ghosts of my childhood / Stay with me if you will / Find a place where there's water / Hold you under 'til you're still) and those two are sort of painful, and so is this one I think, but Steal Smoked Fish is gentler. In Until I Am Whole and Outer Scorpion Squadron, the personified things are hopes, dreams, bad memories, etc, things that exist, but on their own have little power, not compared to a destiny. You could argue that hopes and dreams and bad memories have power, but they only have the power that you give them: the narrators of both songs kill these little creatures of theirs, drowning them. But in Steal Smoked Fish, the angels belong to other people, not the narrator, and they're above them, and they're not helpless little creatures waiting to be drowned. They are benevolent and murderous, beautiful and terrible: angels that don't love you. The line just before that couplet I picked is Some of you will be dead next year. The narrator sees the future in retrospect, your destinies above you, and gives it form, a form with power, not a little thing to be drowned in a bucket and left to rot. I don't have a central thesis here, I just think it's an interesting comparison.

oooh what would you say the most haunted tmg songs are? which ones have ghosts in em?
oh I'm so in love with this question, oh my god. I think the most haunted tmg songs are a very specific subset of the autobiographical ones: steal smoked fish, stack 'em up, rose quarter drifting (we shall all be healed), from tg&y. those ones in particular all go together and they're all haunted, but that's because, well, this song is for a lot of people, most of them ghosts.
aside from those ones: I think most of transcendental youth has ghosts, but especially lakeside view apartments suite and harlem roulette. get lonely also has a lot of ghosts but not really in the same way; the most haunted get lonely track to me is woke up new. despite how many tracks outright mention ghosts, most of those ones aren't very haunted to me, sorry outer scorpion squadron and keeping house and the young thousands. letter from belgium however is absolutely haunted. you know what, let me just do a playlist:
title from the young thousands, despite it not being on here, because that's one of my all-time favorite quotes about ghosts. this obviously contains some unreleased/live only songs as well as one specific live version rather than the album version, which I've added to this post below:
Stack 'Em Up / From TG&Y / Rose Quarter Drifting / Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod / From the Lake Trials
anyone who wants to add more songs to this post please feel free to!
#aud#transmissions from lyric#tmg#the mountain goats#ask#thank you for this ask omg this is something i think about a LOT

Piett's Turn For Imperial Headcanons
Because Firmus Piett and Maximilian Veers are never far apart.
Firmus Piett:
-has a knife in his boot at all times and he knows how to use it
-will eat bugs. has failed to convince Veers that this is perfectly natural and that bug flours are a staple on Axxila.
-likes tall ships (another @musewrangler inspired headcanon. actually, they inspired a lot of my Piett headcanons)
-can and will out drink Veers. And most of his other aquaintances
-keeps small trees in his office
-hates the dentist even more than the medics
-had three sisters but they all died
-the oldest died to pirates and that's why Piett joined the Anti-Pirate Fleet
-the middle died to circumstances caused by the Clone Wars. medical and/or food shortage due to Republic cutting of trade bc of alleged seperatist leanings, after all Axxila is in the same sector as Serenno, who knows if they support the Confederacy (the answer to that is sort of and it's complicated)
-the youngest died to general Outer Rim poor life conditions
-has 20 bounties on his head at any given time, has honestly forgotten about half of them
-loves this one specific brand of tea and will Know if you try to pass off anything else as his favorite tea
-can and will climb through vents and laundry chutes
-is the reason the Executor made it to Bespin before the Falcon
-talks to his sentient ship and loves her more than almost anything else in the galaxy
-has an accent he suppressed bc Discrimination and Classism
-has a bad knee
-had slave ancestors, grandparents or great grandparents
-sees Veers as a brother and will mercilessly make fun of him, definitely the younger brother in the relationship
-can and will bite, Veers has a scar
-Veers does not regret what he did to get the scar, Piett does not regret giving it to him
-does Not like snakes. at all. Or scorpions. He won't scream but he will make Veers or Venka get even the harmless ones
-likes those mandalorian specialty spicy chocolates
-best in Death Squadron at reading the Vader helmet tips
-Absolutely Vader's favorite, he is the only person in Death Squadron who hasn't realized this

Sybsybsyb!! For the TMG ask, I'll say a song from a few of the albuns you picked bc I'm curious to hear your takes!! You can pick one song or all of them, your choice Outer Scorpion Squadron Southwestern Territory White Cedar Broom People Heretic Pride
Outer Scorpion Squadron, from Heretic Pride -- you know what, I don't linger on this song a lot but I should, the instrumentation is lovely. Anyways:
Find a place where there's water, // hold you under till you're still
Not to sound silt-pilled but this reminds me of my specialest worst boy Faulkner (oooh you want to listen to TSV podcast soooo bad)
-
Southwestern Territory, from Beat the Champ. God. one of my favourites, no doubt. From memory:
I try to remember to write in the diary // that my son gave me climb the turnbuckle high // take two falls out of three // black out for local TV
Just. the tenderness of a travelling wrestler, doing their damndest to snatch time for the thing that makes them feel alive. Trying also to do right by a son, so far away on the road...it gets me, you know?-
-
White Cedar from Transcendental Youth. Honestly, it's rare for me to say this, but it's not the lyrics that get me in this song. It's the swell of the horns. But in any case, this one:
Woke up on lockdown one more time // My visions won't ever learn But I see the light that much clearer // Every time I return
Yeah.....
- Broom People from The Sunset Tree. Man. I almost wrote a fic on the energy of this song. Obsessed in particular with this line, godddd:
I write down good reasons to freeze to death // in my spiral ring notebook But in the long tresses of your hair // I am a babbling brook
It's so... young, this song, and hurting and trapped like this whole album and finding small, young loves as the only reason to survive. The evoking of "freezing to death" gets me.
- Heretic Pride, from Heretic Pride, the song that turned me on to the album! As a devout atheist (Christian cultural, and full respect to the fact that JD writes a lot from his Christianity), and a freaky queer, I couldn't love this song more.
And I start laughing like a child // and I mark their faces one by one Transfiguration's gonna come for me at last// and I will burn hotter than the sun
Yeah? yeah <33

hello!! ✨
for the tmg ask game— favorite alpha couple songs and most underrated song?
im ngl I did have to google which ones are the alpha songs bc there’s a lot. I think I have to say international small arms traffic blues. The idea of an unhappy marriage as a cold war that’s not so cold reminds me a lot of my parents, and they almost got divorced three times but stayed together and are still together… that’s how you know it hits. plus my dad was actually deployed to north macedonia when they first got together so it feels weirdly personal.
as for alpha songs with alpha in the name, alpha negative! you! made! me! drink! poison!!! it rides this fuzzy line between sweet and toxic. Remembering the bad stuff, as the good things happen, remembering how the good things were also bad things. once again hits.
most underrated song? oh man. so many: answering the phone. cotton. most of dark in here. any song with a yamaha keyboard preset as part of the backing. outer scorpion squadron! in my heart, any goats song that’s not no children or this year is underrated.

for the ask game- all eternals deck
TY for the ask!! I love AED sm it is so slept on
Best song on the album: AGE OF KINGS.
Favorite song on the album: Age of Kings again. I feel very strongly about this song. runner up would be Liza Forever Minnelli.
Least favorite song on the album: actually the hardest question of my fucking life. I guess The Autopsy Garland bc of that one line.
Most overrated song on the album: Damn These Vampires. It's still very good though.
Most underrated song on the album: Age of Kings. Age of Kings. Outer Scorpion Squadron. Age of Kings.
Banger of all bangers: You haven't lived until you've moshed to Estate Sale Sign
Rate from 1-10: with 10 being best I would give AED a 7!
#sorry all of my ratings are high i just happen to like the mountain goats a whole lot#ask#dykedalecooper#ask game#it posts
