i saw a post floating around a bit ago that said something along the lines of "i think everyone needs larger living spaces with room to exist in" and it kind of really irked me as a western-centric view, but i only just put my finger on what i think the issue is.
it all comes back around to third spaces. someone who lives in a village of one room mud huts is not less happy or less fortunate than an American in a townhouse - they get their solace in outdoor/separate from home community spaces. my mother lived a very happy childhood with her whole family in an apartment the size of our current living room - and upon reflection, she credits it with the state-built parks between every complex that she played in and was called from to dinner through an open window.
and there is a draw towards alone-ness for a lot of us, in equating peace to silence and ownership of our own space, but i can't help but wonder if we would be so exhausted by the outside if the outside were more livable, and if we didn't have so much of a need to recover from existing in the society we built
#idk it REALLY bugged me because i felt it was dismissive of all the people in the world (many people!) who live very happily in small spaces#but at the same time i could see where they were coming from#and the train just went past a daunting looking suburb and i had a lightbulb moment#and if you think about it most people come home and then continue to engage in society via social media#so it's not necessarily true that we need to be alone#maybe just that existing socially in the system is more tiring than it needs to be#and the internet provides a more low stakes environment that could perhaps be paralleled by. say. a town market#where you sit with your friends and people watch#but when outside is an onslaught of cars and hostile architecture and spaces that cost money#it's no wonder we isolate ourselves#now. i don't know if there exist a feasible solution for northern climes where the outdoors is only comfortable max 6 months of the year#but we definitely should not be imposing this way of living on the rest of the world#it's lonely#personal#thoughts

idk!! i just think it’s interesting that queer people stereotypically don’t like the outdoors!! or the boonies!! or country music!! or roadhouses!! or anything associated with poor country culture!!
queer people exist everywhere and along the whole spectrum of interests and backgrounds!! big city pride isn’t the end all be all of queer culture!!
#i’m not from anywhere rural but boy would i like to be#i love outdoor recreation and i’m a wildlife nerd#there are great things about living in urban environments but i just want to live in the woods or mountains or plains#somewhere i can raise chickens and geese and goats and go fishing every day#and live happily ever after with my lumberjack/cowboy lover

outdoor cat owners be like: “you shouldn’t cut your cat’s nails if they go outside because you’re robbing them of their natural defence system to defend them against other cats, animals and other dangers.” and then get mad?? at you?? when you tell them what they just said implies it’s unsafe to let their cat outside???
#other animals are just one threat to your cat and a reason why you shouldn’t let them outside#you live in norway? where there are no coyotes? ok#there are still bears lynxes foxes wolves and birds of prey#at least you don’t have coyotes tho! 🤪#not to mention cars dangerous environments and cruel humans#and that’s only if you care about potential harm to your cat which i know you don’t#there’s also the effect they have on the ecosystem#cats are perfect predators who are extremely efficient at hunting#it has been proven through various studies that cats absolutely decimate the local bird population#even causing EXTINCTION in some cases#but outdoor cat owners are selfish people who don’t care about their cats or anyone else so ofc all of this falls on deaf ears#animal abuse /#animal death ment /

i feel like ppl who are so loud about "eW yoU doNT shOweR thRee tiMEs a dAy likE I dO?????" are inherently the dirty ones bc like what the fuck are you doing that makes you need to shower three times a day or even twice a day tbh
#like if ur in a very hot climate#or live in like nyc where the air is gross#or like are a person where ur job is working in a stuffy environment or u have to work outdoors#then yes that makes sense#but like if ur just living a sedentary life and ur that greasy and sweaty from doing nothing#u proabably cant fathom what its like to live otherwise and thats why#u have to be so obnoxiously loud about it#and its ok to be a sweaty greasy person who needs to shower that often#but like its always them being so loud and judgemental about it with some sort of#moral superiority complex#like not everyone is as naturally greasy and stinky as you im sorrry !#also why do you have so much time on your hands that you can shower three times a day !!!!!!!!!#either that or you are not being very effective with your showers!#bc mine take 20-25 minutes on average!#if by 'shower' u mean u stand there for 5 minutes to get wet and then get out#then yes u need to shower more bc ur not cleaning anything bro

Exploring the Benefits of Indoor Outdoor Thermometers in the Smart Home Industry
I recently installed some indoor outdoor thermometers from SwitchBot in my home, and I couldn't be happier with the results! The convenience of monitoring both indoor and outdoor temperatures seamlessly has truly enhanced my daily life. It’s fascinating to see how these smart devices contribute to energy efficiency and comfort. I wonder how these advancements in the smart home industry will continue to evolve. It would be interesting to explore more about the impact of technology on our living environments!

One of the cats had to move in with me bc he was bullying the 17 year old cat too much and we thought she was gonna kick it soon but she immediately got back to her old self as soon as he was gone and now that she’s on thyroid medicine she’s regularly bringing home fat mice and rabbits
#yes yes outdoor cats are bad for the environment but she has lived like this her entire life and is the last who is outdoors#probably delete later

WHY IS IT 50 F IN NORTH MIDWESTERN DECEMBER?!
#It's not even enjoyable it's like that horrible blindingly grey sky with various shades of beige grey and dead leaves#Theres still bugs. Outside. In december.#Fuck global warming where the hell is my snow#Yes I realize that the outdoor environment is 9 thousand % less important visually than it is for living stuff#And the warmer weather now means more problems later in the local ecological development#I understand the environmental and ecological impacts and it frustrate me.#But also. Where snow???? Need my aesthetics and cold enough weather to dress goth!!

A study that just came out demonstrates that outdoor cats are known to prey on over two thousands species of wild animal, from mammals to birds to insects. That includes 347 species that are endangered, threatened or otherwise of concern, and they've been a key factor of the permanent extinction of over 60 species. And while cats may not always bring home what they catch, chances are if your cat is allowed to roam unsupervised outside, they're killing your local wildlife.
Why is this so important? Worldwide, wild animal populations have decreased in number by 69% in the past fifty years; that means that in my lifetime (born in 1978), the sheer number of wild animals in the world has been decreased by over half. Even "common" wild species are less numerous than before. While habitat population is the single biggest cause of species endangerment and extinction overall, outdoor and indoor/outdoor cats are a significant cause as well. In fact, they are the single biggest cause of human-caused mortality in wild birds.
Most importantly, it's very, very simple to fix this problem: keep your cats indoors, and spay and neuter them. If your cat is bored, they need more enrichment, and there are plenty of ways to make your home more exciting for them, from bringing home cardboard boxes for them to explore, to playing with them more often. If you want your cat to get some outdoor enrichment, leash train them (yes, it can be done!) If you have the space and resources, build them a catio where they can be safe from outdoor dangers like predators and cars, while also keeping local wildlife safe from them.
If you just give into their whining and pawing at the door, then they know that that's what they have to do to get their way; I know it's a tough transition, but it's worth it in the end for everyone involved. Cats are domesticated, which means they are not native anywhere in the world; there are exactly zero ecosystems in which they belong, save for the safety of your home. It is your responsibility to give them an enriching environment without taking the shortcut of letting them go wreak havoc outside.
