Outdoor restaurant dining spaces extend until 2026

The Encinitas City Council in San Diego, CA, extended the temporary outdoor restaurant dining spaces until July 2026. This was confirmed during a council meeting held last Wednesday. Despite uneven demand and the added expense of Covid-19 preparedness protocols, hoteliers are stepping up to the challenge. Domestic openings are plentiful, but international properties are sprouting up just as quickly as travel bubbles (and corridors between countries) become the talk of potential recovery. Island and resort destinations, in particular, are seeing growth, especially in parts of Asia, Mexico, the Caribbean, and parts of the U.S.

Opening their doors in preparation for a brighter 2021 ahead, these are some of the newest December, January, and February hotel and resort openings around the world.

New England will get a new hotel when The Beatrice opens this month in Providence, Rhode Island with 47 rooms and a rooftop bar.

London will see a fourth property for the Locke brand when Kingsland Locke opens in January with 124 studio apartments, plentiful co-working space, and an onsite microbrewery and gin distillery among its many amenities.

Grand Hotel Victoria will open on the shores of Lake Como in February.

On the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, the Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa will open in February. The 19th century neoclassical villa will feature 81 rooms and suites and be part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, which participates in World of Hyatt.

The Comwell Copenhagen Portside opens in January taking inspiration from the Danish capital’s historic harbor warehouses. Its 493 rooms, part of the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts group, represent the first hotel to open in the Nordhavn area.

In Madrid, one of the first Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotels in Europe will open by the end of February. Atocha Hotel Madrid is within walking distance of its namesake train station as well as the “Golden Triangle of Art,” known for some of Europe’s most famous art museums.

Latin America and the Caribbean

In Puerto Rico’s charming Old San Juan district, Palacio Provincial will open in January as a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and participant in its I Prefer Hotel Rewards program. The building’s history dates back 200 years hosting diplomatic visitors to the island. On top of the 43-room hotel is a rooftop swimming pool overlooking the city.

Preferred Hotels & Resorts is gaining a new property in the Galeria Plaza San Jeronimo that opens this month in Mexico City. Its rooftop pool and garden plus 151 rooms and suites in a central capital city neighborhood are sure to prove popular with both business and leisure travelers.

Also in Mexico is the new Aloft Tulum that will open in February. It will be near the city center and a short drive from the Caribbean waterfront.

North of Cancun’s hotel zone, a new Planet Hollywood Beach Resort opens this month with 898 suites and 11 restaurants. The resort will have its signature Hollywood-themed memorabilia on display highlighting 40 “cult classic” movies. An adults-only section of the resort, known as “Adult Scene,” is a first for the brand; it will have its own beachfront, pool area, and specialty restaurants.

Cielo Lodge, along the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, will open in January featuring six suites with open-air accommodations amid the tree canopy of the Golfito Rainforest.

Canopy by Hilton São Paulo Jardins opens in February as the first Canopy by Hilton property in South America. The 98-room boutique hotel will treat guests to complimentary, local spirits and light fare each day in addition to regionally inspired check-in gifts.

The Caribbean has a spate of new hotel openings on the horizon. In the Turks and Caicos, Beach Enclave Grace Bay opens in December with ten standalone villas offering Grace Bay beachfront and ocean views. This is the first, new-build project along Grace Bay in a decade. Each features a private infinity-edge pool, full kitchen with villa staff, and ample outdoor spaces including dining areas and showers.

Walk about 20 steps over to the Plaza where you’ll find space to spread out your picnic blanket and enjoy the history all around. Kids ages 10 and under eat free per paying adult entrée. Their current hours are only Fri.-Sun. 11 a.m.-9 p.m., but keep checking back for updates.

While the museums and some of the shops and restaurants are closed, it’s still a great place to walk around. When you’re done eating, we challenge you to find the old jail cell and the school house.

Savor traditional homemade Mexican meals in front of the age old San Luis Rey Mission for a truly spiritual experience. If you have an early riser, the Restaurant opens at 6:30 a.m., so grab their delicious pancakes or breakfast burritos for a breakfast picnic before you walk the Mission grounds. Be prepared to pick up some of their prized cakes, breads and of course their famous smiley face cookies for a treat!

The Mission is open with limited hours, but you can also just walk around the grounds. You’ll see the historic adobe brick ruins out front and the very first Pepper Tree planted in California! If you’re there at the top of the hour, you’ll even hear the mission bells ring.

The perfect picnic combo is a cute little lake right behind a Chinese takeout spot. There are lots of ducks to feed and turtles to see with an easy paved walking path around this lake. Since it’s right behind a Chinese restaurant, that’s a no brainer to grab some orange peel chicken and bring your blanket for one of the easiest family picnics ever.

If your kiddos’ palates haven’t sampled Chinese foods yet, I’d suggest trying some of these as a good entry for them: wonton appetizers, orange peel shrimp or chicken (ask for no spice), honey glazed BBQ pork or shrimp, chicken chow mein or pineapple fried rice are always sure bets for my kids.

Here’s another tongue twister for you, but if you can say it you can order it. They’re known for their big servings which I can attest to; one order of anything from here will basically feed my two boys and I. Aside from their breakfast menu, they also serve up hot & cold sandwiches, salads, wraps and burgers. They close at 3 p.m., so this spot is best for a breakfast or lunch picnic; or better yet make it a brunch picnic with their chicken & waffles. Gobble it down at nearby Rohr Park where there’s plenty of space to put down your picnic blanket and let the kids run around.

If the kids are begging for a little sweet treat, I highly suggest stopping at nearby Holey Paleta or Hans & Harry’s Bakery; don’t worry the lines moves fast.

We have a diva moment near Soulscape, in Encinitas, at the restaurant next to it. He is doing so well but needs the restroom. The holiday traffic has thrown off our segmenting. Meaning, stops don’t go as planned. Anyway, we walk the outdoor path towards inside and a woman has parked her huge babystroller in the pathway. Complete roadblock. I quickly apologize and ask if she will move it so that we can pass. She’s not tuning into the situation and makes it clear this is an inconvenience to her. My son takes her attitude as a no and basically lets her know he doesn’t appreciate it. His stomping and tantruming, justifiably, causes her baby to become upset. An older gentleman approaches, helping to calm my son. A younger fellow steps out of the kitchen and motions me to follow him to where there is a private restroom.

Pissed and pissing, my son is approaching some relief.

Soon, thereafter, he exits back onto the path towards the car — as if nothing happened. I can hear the baby calming in background and I can see all those dining on the patio looking towards us. I turn to everyone and send out an apologetic: Thank you for your patience! and leave, smiling.

Because, I knew it could have been ahellofvalot worse. Haha...

April 20, 2017 Now open at 4839 Newport Avenue in the 2nd story space that previously housed OB Warehouse in Ocean Beach is the 5th location of the popular San Diego morning destination Breakfast Republic. We broke the news earlier this year that the Cohn Restaurant Group was closing OB Warehouse and the bi-level space would be used for a Breakfast Republic outpost on the top story and a Coin Haus Beer & Games location on the ground floor. While much of the previous OB Warehouse space has been kept intact, including the 1965 Airstream trailer with views into the kitchen, Rise & Shine Restaurant Group updated the area to conform to its Breakfast Republic brand, including the additions of a downstairs waiting lounge with signature egg chairs, a living wall with clever phrasing, community seating options, a large party booth, humor-cracking signage, a merchandise section, pancake whisk lights, and an outdoor covered patio.

At almost 5,000 square-foot of dining space, the OB location is the largest Breakfast Republic to date. In addition to a full bar, the new eatery will offer a brunch-style menu of excessive and innovative breakfast foods and nostalgia-inspired dishes. Highlights include the Shrimp & Grits breakfast, the Breakfast Mac & Cheese, and the Banana Split French Toast. On the sweeter side, their pancake flights and French toast flights continue to fly out of the kitchen constantly, with flavor options such as Oreo Cookie, Cinnamon Roll, S’mores, and Lemon ‘n Coconut.

Breakfast Republic is the brainchild of Rise & Shine Restaurant Group founder Johan Engman, who got into the breakfast game with his first Fig Tree Cafe in Pacific Beach, which opened in 2008. He now has three Fig Tree locations (PB, Hillcrest & Liberty Station), and since debuting in 2015, consistently packs the house at what is now five locations of his rapidly expanding Breakfast Republic empire of eateries (North Park, Liberty Station, Encinitas, East Village, and Ocean Beach – with a Carmel Valley branch on the way). Engman is also in the process of opening several other restaurant concepts, including North Park Breakfast Company, Pizza Republic in North Park, and El Jardin in Liberty Station, with greater expansion plans on the horizon.
