@twilighttheater, Blanc.
The day after the first night of the festival — the first full day of the festival. Svern had briefly considered waiting a little longer, until the day after this one, maybe... but he had quickly decided against it. Waiting much longer wouldn't assist him in the reason that he'd come here.
Svern strode through the village, hands pulled up into the slightly-too-long sleeves of his puffer jacket, but not stuffed into the jacket's pockets, so his arms could swing freely with each step. It was no longer early in the day and he'd spent the hours leading up to this keeping an eye on his target, at a distance without being spotted, he was quite certain. He'd tried not to be, anyway, and would be a bit disappointed to find out otherwise.
It'd spoil the effect.
Now was just the right time, out at the light displays. It was a shame that Unova's weren't available yet, or he would have favoured those. He'd picked a moment when Blanc and Glacier didn't have any immediate need to assist passengers. He lifted his head and called out: his voice carrying through the chilly air, clear and bright, aimed to catch their attention.
"Blanc!"
And there was Svern, after not having shown his face to Blanc for the last month, strolling over to them with his usual wide smile on his face. The way he talked wasn't any different to how he always did.
"And Glacier! HI! You look like you've been working hard!"
He was wearing the scarf Blanc had given him for his birthday. The light purple scarf, made in Svern's favourite colour, a colour he didn't wear often... but he did wear it now. In fact, his jacket was purple, too, as were his boots, the shade of which even matched his scarf.
"Looks fun!" he added, eyeing the carriage. "I'll have to ask for a ride later!"
#catch me if you can (ic)#twilighttheater#out of the dark day and into the brighter night (v; alt)#vbholidayfestival2023#:)#a little later than i initially hoped but oh well#i remember a day when tumblr hadn't eaten my alt verse tag. to this day i do not know why it did.#i hope this is Okie i'm not 100% sure on how the carriage rides work#also left the time a little ambiguous so whatever time of day you think is best :]

POSITIVE SPINS: NEW ARTISTS, NEW ALBUMS, AND NEW LIVE STREAMS THAT PUT OUR 2020 ON A BETTER TRACK
2020 proved to be one of the hardest years we have collectively gone through. While we didn’t have live music to lean on when times got tough, these are the albums, artists and livestreams that got us through the rough patches and will carry us into a brighter 2021.
Listen to our playlist of Positive Spins!
BEST NEW ARTISTS OF 2020 (in no particular order)
THICK
“Brooklyn-based pop-punk three-piece, THICK, are not afraid to say (or sing) what’s on everyone’s mind - with a fierceness and confidence I can only aspire to assume. Sticking it to the establishment is the name of their game - take “Mainsplain,” for instance - and they manage to do so with catchy chord progressions and an uplifting vigor. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the trio, and who else they’ll put in check.” - S. D.
Ela Minus
“Brooklyn-based techno-pop artist Ela Minus broke onto the scene this year with her debut album “ acts of rebellion.” The Colombian-born musician has a background in emo bands, is a trained jazz drummer, and she wrote, produced, engineered, and recorded the album on her own. “acts of rebellion” is moody and sultry, while still making you want to grab your friends and dance.” - K. C.
Arlo Parks
“Without even having released her debut album yet, Arlo Parks has made a name for herself this year. Singles released throughout the year, paired with 2019’s EP ‘Sophie’ and her slot as support on Hayley Williams’ (cancelled) tour have boosted Arlo to a new level this year, that we can only assume will continue to rise in 2021 when her debut album drops.” - K. C.
Beabadoobee
“Beabadoobee’s interesting name is only matched by her sound - bedroom-pop fused with nineties indie-rock, tinged with a tender, DIY aesthetic. Her track “If You Want To” will have you singing along, while her single “She Plays Bass” will take you back to your hormonal, vulnerable, teenage years met with sublime nostalgia. She’s without a doubt a silver lining in 2020.” - S. D.
BENEE
“I first saw Auckland’s BENEE at Rough Trade in October of last year - her sincere, to-the-point lyrics and quirky hooks instantly hooked me. You may know her track, “Supalonely,” which found popularity on TikTok during the height of lockdown, but BENEE’s sound isn’t limited to the confines of one social media trend. In her debut album released this year, BENEE displays an uncanny ability to tackle alt-rock, hip-hop and electro-pop all at the same time, in an unbothered, endearing way - making her a “one to watch” in 2020 and beyond.” - S. D.
Christian Lee Hutson
There isn’t a lack of acoustic singer-songwriters out there, but Christian Lee Hutson is an important new voice. Hutson first full length album, “Beginners,” released this year, has a warm and honest quality to it. The production is subtle (thanks to producer Phoebe Bridgers), and so perfectly complements a simple, acoustic narrative. The result is a soulful, beautiful, and special work of music. - S. D.
Do Nothing
“2020 newcomers out of Nottingham, UK, Do Nothing have already made a big splash in the post-punk world. Releasing their first EP, Zero Dollar Bill, earlier this year, the band have been compared to Idles and are setting out on a similar path of success. Upon first hearing their earlier single Lebron James, countless fans are sure to be sucked into the world of Do Nothing.” - K. C.
Kate Bollinger
“I first listened to Kate Bollinger when she released I Don’t Wanna Lose in 2019. I played the track Candy on repeat all year long. It has been so lovely to watch her grow into the artist she is today. This year she released an EP called A word becomes a sound, which quickly became one of my favorite releases of 2020. Her voice is so comforting. Whenever I listen, I feel like I am being coddled in a fluffy blanket with a cup of herbal tea and nothing could go wrong at that moment. I can’t wait to see what Kate has planned for 2021 and beyond!” - L. S.
SAULT
“After a year of intense racial unrest in the United States, SAULT’s importance is more significant now than ever. With themes focusing around the Black Lives matter movement, this mystery soul-funk group has become more than buzzy in the music scene, and has earned a spot on tons of year end lists.” - K. C.
Sorry
“London-based genre-defying band Sorry released their debut album ‘925’ this year, produced by James Dring (Gorillaz, Jamie T) which is already reason enough to pique the interest of most. The album certainly does not disappoint, with each song giving you a different taste of the many interesting sides of this up-and-coming group.” - K. C.

BEST NEW ALBUMS OF 2020 (in no particular order)
Fiona Apple – Fetch the Bolt Cutters
“Fiona Apple is fearless in this album. The song structures and sounds take you on a listening experience I can only describe as emotional in the best way. Eight years of waiting was totally worth it.“ - S. D.
Fleet Foxes – Shore
“This album had been bright spot in a difficult year. St. Ann’s Church was the perfect location for their Colbert performance of Can I Believe You and the live stream will be the perfect holiday present. Ready to feel all the feels!” - K. A.
Khruangbin - Mordechai
“Khruangbin is one of my go-to bands, and “Mordechai” has been heavy in my rotation in 2020. It’s really a great album – I play it cover-to-cover and pairs well with a cocktail and cooking at home, infusing some needed spice and energy in what could otherwise be ‘just another night’ during a long, monotonous several months.” - C.M.
Moses Sumney - Græ
“The highly anticipated second album from Moses Sumney, shows us more of the highly personal, raw and emotionally moving music we have some to expect from him. The cluster of emotions that Moses works through with his beautifully unique voice in this 20 song album give us a look into the complicated mind of one of the most interesting artists of the last 5 years.” - K. C.
Perfume Genius – Set My Heart On Fire Immediately
“*Bill Hader’s Stefan voice* this album has everything! From the heavy and distorted bass on “Describe” to the melodic harp stringing of “Leave,” to the dance ballad (is that a thing?) “On The Floor,” Perfume Genius’ album Set My Heart on Fire Immediately really does have it all. Each song feels vastly different from the next in tone, instrumentation, and influence – yet they all come together so perfectly to make this stunning album, all while showcasing his vocal depth and range. There’s a reason he’s called Perfume *Genius*, and that is because Mike Hadreas can take familiar feelings and turn them into unconventional pop ballads that feel both relatable, but new and exciting at the same time.” - R. E.
Phoebe Bridgers – Punisher
“How does Phoebe do it? (a question I ask myself daily). I remember waking up on June 18 as if it was my birthday. Punisher is everything I hoped for and then some more. The last song on the album, “I know The End” concludes with a scream which is the perfect cherry on top to this masterpiece. This album is a rollercoaster of Phoebe’s emotions and I feel blessed to be along for the ride. It is relatable, heartfelt and honest. Thank you to Phoebe for this gift. The world will never be the same after this.” - L. S.
Rina Sawayama - SAWAYAMA
“SAWAYAMA is the early 2000s pop resurgence we didn’t know we needed, mixed with all the best parts of nu-metal. Rina Sawayama uses catchy pop hooks reminiscent of early Britney Spears, and pairs them with heavy guitar riffs to give us arguably the most fun album of 2020 that we cannot wait to experience live.” - K. C.
Tame Impala – The Slow Rush
Thundercat - It Is What It Is
“I love how this album embraces the darkness while managing to find the light in despair - it seems to acutely reflect the times we are in yet is simultaneously so personal to Bruner. The lyrics are set against a backdrop of funk, electronica, jazz, and soul, so there’s a little something for everybody.” - S. D.
Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud
“This album was released early in quarantine, and was the perfect musical escape during some of the toughest days. The imagery and reflection of the lyrics are why Saint Cloud tops my list of albums of 2020.” - J. F.
Honorable Mentions: The Beths – Jump Rope Gazers Fontaines DC - A Heros Dream Kevin Morby – Sundowner Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit – Reunions My Morning Jacket - The Waterfall II CHIKA - Industry Games Megan Thee Stallion - Suga Christian Lee Hutson- Beginners Idles- Ultra Mono Sturgill Simpson - Cuttin Grass Pup - This Place Sucks Ass Futurebirds- Teamwork Adrianne Lenker – Songs / Instrumentals Tom Misch, Yussef Dayes - What Kinda Music + the bonus tracks EP Some Kind Of Peace – Olafur Arnalds Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown - Pressure Josh Ritter - See Here, I Have Built You a Mansion Sahara Moon - Worthy Local H - Lifers Deep Purple - Whoosh! TOP TEN LIVESTREAMS 2020 (in no particular order)
Christine & The Queens (Live on KEXP at Home)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bavZe47um4
“Live on KEXP at Home” was home to some of my favorite quarantine livestreams, and this one did anything but disappoint. Not only does Chris, aka Christine & The Queens, perform, but interviews are woven throughout the livestream. The drama of her performances, juxtaposed with her witty and humorous banter with the interviewer was such a breath of fresh air. If you’re a fan of Chris, this is a must watch.“ - S. D.
Courtney Barnett and Lucius & Friends: Live From Our Lounge Rooms with Sheryl Crow, 3/25/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbfRbw3o1jU
“This was a gift that kept on giving. The stream started off with Courtney Barnett and Lucius in matching pajamas. I truly thought it could not get any better but I was in for a treat! The stream included performances by Nathaniel Rateliff, Sheryl Crow, Sharon Van Etten, Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby and more. I can safely say this was my favorite live stream I watched in 2020.” - L. S.
Julien Baker, Themfest Instagram Livestream, 4/16/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tINSbY4wRjs
“Recorded for Themfest during the early days of quarantine, Julien Baker’s in-home livestream was a welcome respite from the Cuomo briefings and general despair of mid April. Just kidding, Julien Baker is the queen of Sad Shit and I certainly didn’t tune into this livestream expecting a mood boost. But if you subscribe to the “sad songs make me feel better” aesthetic purveyed by our sweet little siren, this moody, intimate shot-on-iphone set will scratch that itch. But let’s not fool ourselves, nothing will ever replace the feeling of holding your breath along with 1,799 others at Brooklyn Steel while JB rips your heart out, in a nice way.” - E. M.
Kurt Vile, Love From Philly Livestream, 5/3/20 (covers John Prine’s “Sam Stone” near the end)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjKG-7d5loY&feature=emb_logo - Jared
“Back in May, Kurt Vile took to his basement for a solo acoustic stream to benefit 30 Amp Circuit, a non-profit dedicated to support the health, wellness, and professional needs of Philadelphia-based musicians and artists. The intimate 3-song set rounded out with a special tribute to the late John Prine, as Kurt did his own rendition of “Sam Stone.”” - J. D.
Radiohead, In Rainbows - From The Basement, 6/4/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWqDIZxO-nU
“This is the one die hard Radiohead fans have been waiting for. This session originally from 2008 existed in some pretty esoteric places and has been almost impossible to find – until now.” - G. A.
Sturgill Simpson, Live at The Ryman Auditorium, 6/5/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO73im4J2sU
“2020 was supposed to be a banner year for Sturgill, until he got COVID-19 in April. He’s ok now, but something about this performance in the sacred church of country music The Ryman, hits different.” - G. A.
Haim - Women in Music PT. III Live Show, 6/25/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_eJU6X3_jQ
“I love pretty much everything the Haim sisters do - so much so that I aspire to be a sister myself. When I was feeling those very familiar mid-pandemic blues, their “Women in Music PT III” livestream, which celebrated their new album of the same name, was the exact pick me up that I needed. For the first time since March, the 30 minute set made me feel as if I was at an intimate gathering - rather than behind a computer watching a YouTube video along with thousands of others. The stream will have you grooving, laughing, and you may even want to be a Haim sister yourself.” - S. D.
Nilufer Yanya, Boiler Room: Streaming From Isolation with Night Dreamer & Worldwide FM, 6/28/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAaAicIJE7s
“Hauntingly beautiful and yet also somehow grounded, Nilufer Yanya’s June livestream was a special one to watch. It makes the case for how intimate an artist’s performance can be, even virtually.” - G. A.
Brittany Howard, Live From Ryman Auditorium, 10/17/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLH59WLQbZo
“Watching Brittany Howard and her incredible band rip through a set on the Ryman stage like no one and everyone was watching all at once was cathartic. The combination of such a singular artist and historic venue hit a similar nerve to seeing an artist you’re excited about play a show in the flesh with people you love – not an easy feat!” - M. L.
Tkay Maidza - Live on KEXP at Home, 11/3/20
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPJgrDvyRbw
“13 minutes and 11 seconds of pure energy. This livestream is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, and, in my opinion, showcases Maidza as the star that she is. A must-watch if you’re looking for a refreshing and colorful approach to hip-hop.“ - S. D.

Bench Flower. | 4
42, the number that represents the answer to mankind’s curiosity towards life, universe, and everything. —The Hitchhiker Guide to The Galaxy.
genre: angst, friendship.
chapter(s): 4/4.
summary: during pre-debut days, 3RACHA encounters empty hopes. it’s up to them to sink or conquer. (insp: track 42 by 3RACHA. (listen here )
CB97 // J-ONE // SPEARB // 3RACHA.
3RACHA.
Bang Chan is … feeling strange. Quite strange. There’s sadness within him, a little leftover from last night’s late ponder. There’s storm in his eyes; a current of strained jubilation that goes dark as the restless nights march on. The surrealism demands no end. It keeps haunting him, though not in a negative way. Everyday, each element will unfold retrograde conception of what dreams are made for—of what desires are meant to be. In one particular strand, he is told the courage of musicians. The pictures elapsing inside his dreams foretokening success; all flowers, all reflections, all cubicles, all ponds— everything makes sense. So far he’s speaking with his fervor, the embodiment of his passion. It emerges in diverse constituents in order to build a message that it can’t tell through words, for passion is a part of emotion with no ability to form speech. Classic, all sequence of surrealism is solely the manifestation of his deepest mind’s effort in battling hopelessness. Nothing transcends in between.
Chan grips the railings of the dormitory’s rooftop, leaning closer to the open air. The midnight breeze is cold enough to reduce the intensity of his fear. In tranquility he recalls his old mates in Australia, making himself again; aware of how serene his life was with no examinations and eliminations. How peaceful it is to follow community, the flowery path of common teenagers in fulfilling their common dreams; school works, P.E. classes, and academical exams instead of vocal trainings, dance practices, and trainee showcases. If only he can turn back the time, Bang Chan leans closer to the railings. His firm grip on the iron bar is getting loose. There’s a melody in his head, developed rather spontaneously. Combined with words from the most haunting dream, Chan croons, his face already touching the midnight’s cold breath. —.
“Chan-hyung!” Ji-sung’s voice screams out from the entry of the rooftop section, sprinting towards him with a panic-stricken look drawn across his bare countenance. He looks extremely frantic, clambering towards the oldest in the way a woman chases her baby’s crib stirring away on a busy pavement. When he gets closer, Chan sees his sleepless eyes glossy with fresh tears. Ji-sung pulls him away from the railings as he bellows at the top of his lungs; “Don’t you give up on us, don’t you give up on us.”
Bang Chan is rendered immobile by his odd gestures. The night is on the peak, why is he still awake? Most importantly—why is he acting so distraught? Ji-sung’s holler is more than necessary in such reclusive confinement. The way his voice cracks, the way he hauls him aside—he’s treating him as if Chan’s going to end his freakin’ valuable life … . while he’s not.
“Jisung-ah, what’s going on?” Chan pries Jisung’s firm grip away, from his bicep, flinching at the dull ache. Jisung’s tears eventually falls—slithering down his pale cheeks in rapid motion. “You’ve been acting weird since 42—I thought you’re going to give up on music—give up on us,” Chan’s tense muscles go limp. “For the sake of 3-RACHA, why should I think of giving—.”
“Spill them out,” Changbin interferes, his deep voice still hoarse with the quality of disturbed sleep. He appears from the unmoving darkness of the rooftop entrance, carefully stepping out. “You think we haven’t gotten any hunch of you? Are you trivializing us, hyung?”
Even beneath the dim effulgence of the mercury moon, Chan can observe the way Jisung’s face shifts from panic to surprise. Changbin’s emergence is truly uncalled for.
As the three enters a seemingly everlasting eye contact, Chan discerns small details that he hasn’t yet regarded in a more serious way. While Jisung shares the same black circles and a sharpened jaw from losing weight, Changbin is … what Chan might call “worse.” Not only he’s encumbered by the fear of not being able to express his passion through music, he’s also afflicted by his schoolwork—his academic dreams in achieving more. Chan can vividly recall the day when Jisung and Changbin run a fever; they both harbor the similar heat of perseverance in his eyes, although their gazes are still hazy from the illness. “I don’t want to waste another day, hyung.” They both say, their old voices now ringing repeatedly in Chan’s mind, “I don’t want to give up.”
“Talk to us, hyung.” Changbin crouches near Jisung and Chan, grief looking so clear like bright paint splashed on a dark canvas. “What happened?” Chan shudders. Changbin’s sympathy—. This is the first time he hearkens the rapper being so wholehearted to him. This is the first time Changbin sees him in the midst of a downfall, resting among his own dark thoughts. Jisung has seen him crying beforehand, but not for the deep-voiced boy he encountered a year ago. There’s an odd solitude delivered through reassurance and recurrence—the kindness he provides manages to make Chan weeps, fresh tears spilling freely along the angles of his chiseled visage.
“I was just … tired.” The oldest whimpers, his cadence unstable. “Six years I’ve been here, I got nothing in return. Debut sounds like a dream out of reach—“ He remembers the day the woman clad in brown leather coat examines the way he sings, replaying the cassette over and over again, before ends up sighing heavily; “Talented, but not talented enough. Ego is what you lack of. You deserve no spotlight with your current capabilities.” It hurts him. “It hurts to see everyone rises to the top as I stay off the ground. Is it because I’m me, not them? Where did I go wrong?”
Jisung and Changbin—once again—drown themselves in a meaningful silence, just like the other day. Chan’s on the verge of collapsing, and the two can’t develop any single equanimity. Stuck on the puzzle, stuck on their own riddles of life. Two young boys lost in the sangfroid of confusion, oscillating forever like a pendulum. They watch the leader swinging on the polar extremes, as their feet were pinned onto the grayscale; unable to stir. It’s not like their concern is somewhere else. It’s merely the inability in forming words that holds them down.
“I ask myself why a few days ago.” The captain begins again, smiling. “My dreams answer, and finally—after seemingly a long period of nightmares, I saw faces—mine. Us,”
Much to Chan’s surprise, Jisung and Changbin both slowly extend their arms and pull him into their warmest embrace. They’re trembling underneath the disturbance of cold, but deep down they know—if words can’t play the game, let action do its job. Through the haze of melancholy, Chan hugs them back. Although the rest of their withdrawal is spent along the course of silence, Chan can hear their intentions, loud and clear; “We’ll be here for you.” Jisung’s old saying echoes. “No matter what happen, hyung. I’ll be there for you.” Changbin’s old “oath” ricochets in his mind, bouncing back and forth like a noise made by broken tapes. Through the treasured quietude, Chan smiles at their memories—the moment he meets Ji-sung, the conversation they have after long hours of practice, the recruitment of Changbin, Ji-sung admitting a healthy rivalry with Changbin, 3-RACHA recording their first tracks and releasing it to websites. It’s not easy to gain acknowledgement as musicians when you begin it small, but as long as they’re here—Chan is sure his path to success is entirely secure.
Chan releases their hug with a mischievous cackle. It’s odd to see them being all sad, therefore he strives to eradicate every sadness in him by saying; “Hey, I’m not giving up on you, you know? Jisung-ah, you really are exaggerating the facts.” Upon this statement, Jisung’s face goes completely red. He bites his lower lip hard, trying to not burst with the growing shame. Changbin puts a reassuring hand on Chan’s shoulder. “Are you really all right now, hyung?” Chan nods, “In fact, I got something for all of you. Rough work for my newest production. I want to replace the gloomy 42 with something brighter—and more motivational in a good way.” “What is it?”
Grinning gingerly at his boys’ curiosity, Chan unfolds a crumpled paper jutting out from the pocket of his ripped jeans. The paper isn’t perpetually sufficient due to its abnormal size, but oddly, Chan’s long scribble fits. From his angle, Jisung takes a glimpse of the oldest’s note—it’s a composition of lyrics written in navy blue ink. “Hear me out, will ‘ya?” Jisung and Changbin tilt their head in a manner that represents pure impatience, eyes sparkling with restless anticipation.
Too far away, like a tunnel vision. The light in front of me isn’t shining yet. The day that we obviously walked, Talk that, call that, Black—darkness taking over.
Seems like our expectations from the beginning is too big, The moment my heart gets attacked, What a moment. Tick-tock, even time passes. Our music’s view count got no change. “Ah, should I just give up?” That thought haunts me.
Before I lose my mind, J-One and Spear-B who stood in front of me, They hold me while saying, “Let’s hold on a little longer.”
Now wake up Chris, we just started. By thinking that this desire is the beginning to get to the top, I start working on our music again, 3RACHA, we’re gonna make it one day.
By the time Chan finishes rapping, Jisung already has a fluttered wide grin upon his face and Changbin already has a bead of tear streaming down his face. Chan grins back at them, his rows of white teeth shown clearly. “How was it?” Jisung takes a deep breath, “It’s extremely beautiful,” Changbin grits his teeth, “I’m torn between punching your gut or hugging you tight, hyung.” Both Jisung and Chan proceeds to a wholehearted laughter. “What’s the title, hyung?” Jisung asks right after his jubilation dies down, “Or you haven’t decided anything yet?” “Worry not, I got one.” Chan folds the paper again and tucks it safe in his warm pocket, “To illustrate the weakness and the strength of 3RACHA, to draw us as a thriving musician with passions to be delivered worldwide, Even a dark shadow needs light to exist.”
Disclaimer.
The entire point of Fleur lies on the power of dreams, flower representations, and two specific songs; 42, and Even A Dark Shadow Needs Light To Exist ( 그림자도 빛이 있어야 존재 ) . These two incredibly powerful tracks were released for their second mixtape, yet they’re now gone from the official channel. For those who’re new to the fandom, 3RACHA has released so many productions and often, the most amazing ones are those which were taken down for unknown reasons. Still, let’s keep on supporting the boys.

Blanc is tending to the various needs of the pokemon throughout his house (including Svern's for that matter), when his mother calls and starts chatting with him. The conversation is half in Unovan and half Northern Kalosian, and Blanc seems to pay no mind to the shifting of the languages back and forth. When the conversation shifts to a mention about Svern's upcoming birthday, he's thankful that Svern can't hear his mother on the other line and tries to generalize exactly what she's asking. "Hey, my parents are talking about having me over for dinner and you're invited along too. My mom's asking about what sort of meals and treats you like for dessert."
Svern perked up at the sound of a dinner invitation from Blanc's parents, rolling off the couch (where he'd draped himself upside-down) and trotting over to Blanc. As he so often did when displaying curiosity, his head tilted to the side, his amber eyes peering wide-open at Blanc.
"Mmmm. Meals and treats for dessert?" he repeated quizzically. "I like spicy food, but besides that, I'm really not fussy! I'll eat anything!"
"As for sweet treats..." He paused, his face scrunching in thought. "...I guess I'm happy with most things, so long as they aren't, like, too sweet."
Those answers... were hardly informative.

Is Black City just as weird as White Forest? What sort of things have you experienced there?
"Well, it's definitely weird in its own way. It's not the same as the Forest is — they're fundamentally different environments... I'd say there's much less sense of the entire place being literally alive. You don't get the same feeling while you're here as the Forest gives."
How to describe that? Both felt like you were in the presence of something that was paying attention, but they weren't the same.
"Oh, but, it definitely watches you, just like the Forest does, and it'll interact with you if it feels like it; it just translates differently. If you don't know what's up with the place, you probably won't realise that person you chatted with on the street was a face of the city itself. What did it learn about you while you made idle conversation?"
"It's typically less obviously eerie than the Forest is. Still dangerous in its own way. A real city is composed of a billion different parts, acting together, as has been streamlined by human systems, with many smaller ones acting of their own accord within that. It's an ecosystem. Well, Black City is too, except those elements are all more or less aware of each other... since they're part of the same whole, and they work in tandem with one another. You don't form part of that whole; you're just a visitor."
"It's got an eye for reading a person, and if you're the greedy type, the place might just ruin you. It soaks that up. You'll never be satisfied... either you'll leave, if you're smart, or you'll waste yourself away."
He'd exchanged words with the man who called himself the boss of the city, and they'd looked each other in the eye, reading one another in the way that only the avatar of a living city and a human who saw a thousand things that would escape most others' notice could do.
"...it lets me live here, though. It knows who I am. It's not like Blanc's connection to the Forest, but we have... an understanding."
"And you have to be careful navigating it. There's no such thing as a reliable map, and you can't trust the directions you're given. A path you took to get someplace yesterday might lead somewhere completely different today; you'll follow those directions to a dead end, or anywhere other than where you were looking to be. You have to be able to see with more than just your eyes, to not rely simply on what you're told, or what you think you already know, if you want to get around."
"That's been my experience, anyway. It's not an unnecessarily cruel place unless you give it a reason to be. I'm sure that plenty of unsuspecting, naive types would be able to find their way around just fine. It's the ones who aren't so innocent that need to watch their step."

OHHHH, this is way too easy. It's way too fun. Svern could do this countless times and not get tired of it. If he were a little nicer, he might feel a tiny bit sorry for Blanc realising that his own attempt at a joke had been played against him... but he wasn't a little nicer. He was Svern.
The corners of his mouth curve up into a grin; then he throws his head back and laughs. He's apparently very pleased with Blanc's reaction (and with himself for his own conducting of the conversation).
"I'm still not saying it seriously. You seem to be taking it seriously, though! Relax, Blanc, it's just a joke!"
Genuinely he didn't think they'd circle back to that, he thought that Svern was deliberately leaning away from it and would continue to do so. Blanc had thought that by questioning what else he'd say, he'd just start getting more dramatic about the fake date.
Instead he's flustered again. One of these days, one of these days he'll win one of these conversations.
"Wha-- hey I-- I reacted like that because I didn't think you'd ever say that seriously!" And he's still not, Blanc knows he's not, but he was going to try to make it seem like he was regardless, wasn't he?

A gift arrived for Svern. Or rather, two gifts. They are both "creatively" wrapped. Almost like the person who wrapped them struggles with neat folding techniques and instead cut pieces to place over them.
The first gift is a misprinted street sign that reads "ICE MAY BRIDGE BEFORE THE ROAD", and judging by the used screw holes it was actually used in a real setting and the sender took it off.
The second gift is a space heater that looks like a Growlithe. It barks when you change settings.
HOW DELIGHTFUL! Svern isn't judging the wrapping job, because he's already tearing it apart anyway, like a five-year-old. Most likely he's going to leave the remains lying there, too, for somebody else to tidy up.
He stands in front of the misprinted sign as he's set it there, hands on his hips, looking at it, and then he starts cackling to himself.
The other one... he's not so sure what to think of. Heaters are great, 'cause they make you warm, but... a Growlithe? Really? Is there someone else he can pass this off onto? Maybe he'll take it apart...

He doesn't even get the chance to say anything, before the man who is not his roommate but continues to show up in his house so often he might as well be, has a hold of an invite Blanc got for the gala event in Goldenrod City. He's barely rolled out of bed at this point and Svern's being the king of nosy again. "I guess it's getting directly to the point to bring it up. Want to go? You've been stuck at home as much as I have been lately. Since I don't think visiting each other counts for outside interaction that much." Visiting is a funny way to describe him breaking in, but nonetheless.
Svern was busy making a show of examining the invite, already having taken the liberty of pulling open curtains for the sake of better light for reading it, letting the morning sun spill into the room.
He held the invite up high, squinting at it, then jumped on and made himself comfortable on Blanc's bed as soon as it was vacated. Once he'd read both sides over several times, he tossed the invite aside (rather carelessly) and lay flat on his back on the bed, hands resting behind his head.
A contemplative hum came from him. "I've probably gotten out more than you!" he protested. "But it's been a while since I bothered with something like this. Seems like it'll be low-key enough... so, sure, why not?"
The corners of his mouth shifted up into a smile. "Ooh, and, and, it's an excuse for us to dress up all fancy, too. Won't that be fun?"

"Hey, Svern."
Thorton maintains eye contact as he stoops down to pack some snow in his hands, "...think fast."
And then he lets it fly!
Svern stands with an attentive, mildly inquisitive look on his face when Thorton addresses him. There's not a scrap of a thought to be seen within his eyes, but he keeps his gaze locked with Thorton's.
The moment that Thorton moves to stoop, he knows what's coming.
They're both fast thinkers, but Svern had WARNING given on this throw, and generally catlike reflexes to boot, so he ducks out of the way and lets the snowball sail harmlessly by. In the same motion, he's whisked some snow into his own hands and is ready to fire back.
"VERY POLITE OF YOU TO WARN ME! Thanks!"

He'll bite at the cup if he feels like it, thanks very much!
Well, he can't complain. There were worse readings to be had, if you cared. Luck in finances is never something he's had to worry about for himself, considering the type of family he comes from, so it would be more useful if the reading referred to "someone close to him".
You work hard to mask any anxiety...?
He's not gonna mention he barely knows what "anxiety" feels like. (He will also therefore ignore the part about masking. Surprise, surprise. The king of masking is being told by some tea that he masks.)
As for the next points... ... ...hmm.
He examines them in his mind with a detached sort of distaste. Inner peace to take care of yourself? Perception that had been lost is coming together? Shed some light on your emotions? In the near future? Yeah. No. Getting bedridden-ill would be more plausible to him. Oh well.
At least "expect good news" is acceptable, though he wonders what kind of news that would be, or what kind of journey it's supposedly referring to as well. The novelty of the tea reading is quickly wearing off, and Svern's mind is moving elsewhere. He claps his hands together.
"Interesting!" he chirps brightly. "Thaaank you!"
Alright, just for fun, Svern will bite. (🎃☕ for @neodarkdark?)
PumpkabooSpiced Tea Readings @neodarkdark / Svern
"Giratina sake...will you not bite at the tea cup like some gremlin" Izzy sighed after handing the beverage over to Svern.
Yeah. She was really making that hypocritcal call out. Like damn bitch just read the tea leaves.
----------------
" 🐝 Oh. It seems the beehive is the symbol for your present. Surprisingly this is actually a positive omen. Being near the top of the cup it means that either you or someone close to you will be lucky in finances. And rather soon, too. That being said you often work hard to mask any anxiousness you have currently."
" 🕯️ For your near future we have a candle. There could be a possible illness. I don't know. I'm not a fucking doctor. But rather off topic this has to do with good deeds. You need some sort of inner peace to take care of yourself. Perception that had been lost is coming together now. Learn to shed some light on your emotions"
" 🐦 Finally a bird has flown into your distant future. Expect good news. It also means a safe and happy journey. This isn't so much a physical one. It can be. But its also a psychological one as well"
#catch me if you can (ic)#pumpkaboo spiced#out of the dark day and into the brighter night (v; alt)#vbholidayfestival2023#ty 🫡 ft. svern dismissing things that will in fact be relevant later.#did not actually mean to write an Entire reaction here but. skdjs
