1 Hit Wonders at Pretoria Barnyard
1 Hit Wonders is a tribute to recording artists who only had one hit song – and then disappeared into obscurity, never to be heard of again… till now – in this Barnyard Theatre Production.
Since the birth of rock and roll, we have experienced one-hit wonders on the pop charts – such as guitar legend Carl Perkins with Blue Suede Shoes and Ben E King with Stand By Me, both topping the charts only once in their recording careers.
In the 1970s we experienced some outrageous dance floor one-hit wonders, if we think back to songs like Knock On Wood, Play That Funky Music, Le Freak (Freak Out), Funkytown, I Will Survive and Kung Fu Fighting, by recording artists such as Amii Stewart, Carl Douglas, Wild Cherry, Chic, Gloria Gaynor, Lipps Inc. to name but a few. The first Rap song called Rapper’s Delight became the ultimate one-hit wonder for The Sugarhill Gang in the 1970s.

In the 1980s we experienced a new sound of one-hit wonders with songs such as You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), Take On Me, 99 Red Balloons, (I Just) Died In Your Arms. Some 1980s bands had outrageous names such as Cutting Crew, Dead or Alive and A-ha! The show also features the greatest one-hit wonder from the 1980s – Don’t Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin.
In the 1990s we had one-hit wonders such as Walking in Memphis, Black Velvet, One Of Us and Save Tonight by recording artists Marc Cohn, Alannah Myles, Joan Osborne and Eagle-Eye Cherry. The show also features party songs like Macarena, Mambo No. 5 and of course the biggest one-hit wonder of the 1990s – I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred.
In the 2000s and beyond we have had an avalanche of one-hit wonders such as Gangnam Style, The Ketchup Song and I Like The Way You Move by PSY, Las Ketchup and BodyRockers. The phenomenon of one-hit wonders continues into the future and beyond but the golden era of the 80s and 90s is when these hit songs made the biggest impression on the soundtrack of our lives.
1 Hit Wonders features a talented 10-piece cast who will perform more than sixty hits. You will remember them not just as tracks that were one-hit wonders, but songs that you partied to and danced till you dropped.
1 Hit Wonders is an ultimate party show – so get ready to boogie on down, sing along with your family and friends, and rock your blues away at The Barnyard Theatre.
