Courtney Barnett, Bob Mould, & Squirrel Flower Live Review: 7/26, Illinois Science & Technology Park Field, Skokie
Tumblr media
Courtney Barnett
BY JORDAN MAINZER
The three artists who played the inaugural night of Out of Space Skokie at its temporary new location took advantage of the open space's clear sound and turned up the fuzz.
Headliner Courtney Barnett, three years removed from her third studio album Things Take Time, Take Time (Mom+Pop), made even that album's understated songs come alive, live. Backed by bassist Thomy Sloane and drummer Stella Mozgawa (of Warpaint, and co-producer of Things Take Time), Barnett elevated sad sack jam "Rae Street", the motorik "Turning Green", the wiry "Before You Gotta Go", and jangly single "Write a List of Things to Look Forward To", emphasizing sounds and lyrics performed and delivered much more subtly on record. "Time is money, and money is no man's friend," she sang on set opener "Rae Street", as if to contextualize the drawn-out nature of some of her back catalog highlights: the wandering "Avant Gardener", bluesy dirge "Small Poppies", and driving bass-led "City Looks Pretty". Vocally, Barnett's screamed rasp was as gravel-throated as ever, a perfect contrast to her droll sprechgesang, confirming the status of "Pedestrian at Best" as a justified shout-along.

Yet, true to Barnett's penchant for storytelling, the anthem of the night was also the slowest song, perhaps her best: the prescient "Depreston". At once a treatise on gentrification, mortality, and time itself, it's the type of song that stops you in your tracks when you realize you're singing back at Barnett, "If you've got a spare half a million / You could knock it down and start rebuildin'," occupying the persona of the grimy real estate agent viewing what was someone's home as a pure capital good. I suppose, after all, the ease at which we sing the song is a tribute to Barnett's empathy, evidence that those of us who participate in the same society with the same set of restrictive rules, have the potential for good and evil. Or maybe it's just a catchy melody.

Bob Mould
Bob Mould, meanwhile, performed solo, but electric, and the set was basically the answer to the question, "What would it sound like if you took away bassist Jason Narducy and drummer Jon Wurster from a normal Bob Mould band set?" Indeed, Mould played at the same breakneck pace as always, running around the stage during solos as if he was hyping up his invisible band. The warmth of his vocals was discernible even beside his distorted guitar tones, whether burning through a Hüsker Dü song or solo material (my one gripe from the setlist: only one Sugar song, the chintzy classic "Hoover Dam"). "Out of Space...out of breath!" Mould proclaimed in triumph after finishing "Siberian Butterfly", nonetheless a reminder to himself to keep on going even when you're the one doing all the work.

Squirrel Flower
Local artist Squirrel Flower, the project of singer-songwriter Ella O'Connor Williams, opened up the night, playing what she said may be her last show in Chicago for a while. For one, drummer Jacob Getzoff is going to nursing school, an announcement that garnered rapturous applause from the crowd. Moreover, ever prolific, Williams shared she hopes to take a break from playing live and write and record, despite having released her most recent and best album Tomorrow's Fire (Polyvinyl) less than a year ago. I'm glad I got to catch Squirrel Flower now, then, each song from Tomorrow's Fire leveled up, the slowcore "Almost Pulled Away" becoming full-on shoegaze, the crunchy "Intheskatepark" featuring drums that could have been audible even at the expansive Canal Shores. If you really want to get a sense for what Squirrel Flower sounds like live, though, simply take a look at the project's discography from start to finish. In other words, the same artist who self-released the stark early winter songs from middle america in 2015 is now faithfully covering "Cortez the Killer". To clarify, Squirrel Flower played only original material for Williams' first ever show in Skokie. "I've only been up here to get bagels," Williams said. No word on whether she's a New York Bagel & Bialy or Kaufman's person.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Gaza Conflict Stokes 'Identity Crisis' for Young American Jews
Tumblr media
Dan Kleinman does not know quite how to feel.
As a child in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, he was taught to revere Israel as the protector of Jews everywhere, the “Jewish superman who would come out of the sky to save us” when things got bad, he said.
It was a refuge in his mind when white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, chanted “Jews will not replace us,” or kids in college grabbed his shirt, mimicking a “South Park” episode to steal his “Jew gold.”
But his feelings have grown muddier as he has gotten older, especially now as he watches violence unfold in Israel and Gaza. His moral compass tells him to help the Palestinians, but he cannot shake an ingrained paranoia every time he hears someone make anti-Israel statements.
“It is an identity crisis,” Kleinman, 33, said. “Very small in comparison to what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank, but it is still something very strange and weird.”
As the violence escalates in the Middle East, turmoil of a different kind is growing across the Atlantic. Many young American Jews are confronting the region’s long-standing strife in a very different context, with very different pressures, from their parents’ and grandparents’ generations.
The Israel of their lifetime has been powerful, no longer appearing to some to be under constant existential threat. The violence comes after a year when mass protests across the United States have changed how many Americans see issues of racial and social justice. The pro-Palestinian position has become more common, with prominent progressive members of Congress offering impassioned speeches in defense of the Palestinians on the House floor. At the same time, reports of anti-Semitism are rising across the country.
Divides between some American Jews and Israel’s right-wing government have been growing for more than a decade, but under the Trump administration those fractures that many hoped would heal became a crevasse. Politics in Israel have also remained fraught, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s long-tenured government forged allegiances with Washington. For young people who came of age during the Trump years, political polarization over the issue only deepened.
Many Jews in America remain unreservedly supportive of Israel and its government. Still, the events of recent weeks have left some families struggling to navigate both the crisis abroad and the wide-ranging response from American Jews at home. What is at stake is not just geopolitical, but deeply personal. Fractures are intensifying along lines of age, observance and partisan affiliation.
In suburban Livingston, New Jersey, Meara Ashtivker, 38, has been afraid for her father-in-law in Israel, who has a disability and is not able to rush to the stairwell to shelter when he hears the air-raid sirens. She is also scared as she sees people in her progressive circles suddenly seem anti-Israel and anti-Jewish, she said.
Ashtivker, whose husband is Israeli, said she loved and supported Israel, even when she did not always agree with the government and its actions.
“It’s really hard being an American Jew right now,” she said. It is exhausting and scary.”
Some young, liberal Jewish activists have found common cause with Black Lives Matter, which explicitly advocates for Palestinian liberation, concerning others who see that allegiance as anti-Semitic.
The recent turmoil is the first major outbreak of violence in Israel and Gaza for which Aviva Davis, who graduated this spring from Brandeis University, has been “socially conscious.”
“I’m on a search for the truth, but what’s the truth when everyone has a different way of looking at things?” Davis said.
Alyssa Rubin, 26, who volunteers in Boston with IfNotNow, a network of Jewish activists who want to end Jewish American support for Israeli occupation, has found protesting for the Palestinian cause to be its own form of religious observance.
She said she and her 89-year-old grandfather ultimately both want the same thing, Jewish safety. But “he is really entrenched in this narrative that the only way we can be safe is by having a country,” she said, while her generation has seen that “the inequality has become more exacerbated.”
In the protest movements last summer, “a whole new wave of people were really primed to see the connection and understand racism more explicitly,” she said, “understanding the ways racism plays out here, and then looking at Israel/Palestine and realizing it is the exact same system.”
But that comparison is exactly what worries many other American Jews, who say the history of white American slaveholders is not the correct frame for viewing the Israeli government or the global Jewish experience of oppression.
At Temple Concord, a Reform synagogue in Syracuse, New York, teenager after teenager started calling Rabbi Daniel Fellman last week, wondering how to process seeing Black Lives Matter activists they marched with last summer attack Israel as “an apartheid state.”
“The reaction today is different because of what has occurred with the past year, year and a half, here,” Fellman said. “As a Jewish community, we are looking at it through slightly different eyes.”
Nearby at Sha’arei Torah Orthodox Congregation of Syracuse, teenagers were reflecting on their visits to Israel and on their family in the region.
“They see it as Hamas being a terrorist organization that is shooting missiles onto civilian areas,” Rabbi Evan Shore said. “They can’t understand why the world seems to be supporting terrorism over Israel.”
In Colorado, a high school senior at Denver Jewish Day School said he was frustrated at the lack of nuance in the public conversation. When his social media apps filled with pro-Palestinian memes last week, slogans like “From the river to the sea” and “Zionism is a call for an apartheid state,” he deactivated his accounts.
“The conversation is so unproductive, and so aggressive, that it really stresses you out,” Jonas Rosenthal, 18, said. “I don’t think that using that message is helpful for convincing the Israelis to stop bombing Gaza.”
Compared with their elders, younger American Jews are overrepresented on the ends of the religious affiliation spectrum: a higher share are secular, and a higher share are Orthodox.
Ari Hart, 39, an Orthodox rabbi in Skokie, Illinois, has accepted the fact that his Zionism makes him unwelcome in some activist spaces where he would otherwise be comfortable. College students in his congregation are awakening to that same tension, he said. “You go to a college campus and want to get involved in anti-racism or social justice work, but if you support the state of Israel, you’re the problem,” he said.
Hart sees increasing skepticism in liberal Jewish circles over Israel’s right to exist. “This is a generation who are very moved and inspired by social justice causes and want to be on the right side of justice,” Hart said. “But they’re falling into overly simplistic narratives, and narratives driven by true enemies of the Jewish people.”
Overall, younger American Jews are less attached to Israel than older generations: About half of Jewish adults under 30 describe themselves as emotionally connected to Israel, compared with about two-thirds of Jews over age 64, according to a major survey published last week by the Pew Research Center.
And though the U.S. Jewish population is 92% white, with all other races combined accounting for 8%, among Jews ages 18 to 29 that rises to 15%.
In Los Angeles, Rachel Sumekh, 29, a first-generation Iranian American Jew, sees complicated layers in the story of her own Persian family. Her mother escaped Iran on the back of a camel, traveling by night until she got to Pakistan, where she was taken in as a refugee. She then found asylum in Israel. She believes Israel has a right to self-determination, but she also found it “horrifying” to hear an Israeli ambassador suggest other Arab countries should take in Palestinians.
“That is what happened to my people and created this intergenerational trauma of losing our homeland because of hatred,” she said.
The entire situation feels too volatile and dangerous for many people to even want to discuss, especially publicly.
Violence against Jews is increasingly close to home. Last year the third-highest number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States were recorded since the Anti-Defamation League began cataloging them in 1979, according to a report released by the civil rights group last month. The ADL recorded more than 1,200 incidents of anti-Semitic harassment in 2020, a 10% increase from the previous year. In Los Angeles, the police are investigating a sprawling attack on sidewalk diners at a sushi restaurant Tuesday as an anti-Semitic hate crime.
Outside Cleveland, Jennifer Kaplan, 39, who grew up in a modern Orthodox family and who considers herself a centrist Democrat and a Zionist, remembered studying abroad at Hebrew University in 2002, and being in the cafeteria minutes before it was bombed. Now she wondered how the Trump era had affected her inclination to see the humanity in others, and she wished her young children were a bit older so she could talk with them about what is happening.
“I want them to understand that this is a really complicated situation, and they should question things,” she said. “I want them to understand that this isn’t just a, I don’t know, I guess, utopia of Jewish religion.”
Esther Katz, the performing arts director at the Jewish Community Center in Omaha, Nebraska, has spent significant time in Israel. She also attended Black Lives Matter protests in Omaha last summer and has signs supporting the movement in the windows of her home.
She has watched with a sense of betrayal as some of her allies in that movement have posted online about their apparently unequivocal support for the Palestinians, and compared Israel to Nazi Germany. “I’ve had some really tough conversations,” said Katz, a Conservative Jew. “They’re not seeing the facts, they’re just reading the propaganda.”
Her three children, who range in age from 7 to 13, are now wary of a country that is for Katz one of the most important places in the world. “They’re like, ‘I don’t understand why anyone would want to live in Israel, or even visit,’” she said. “That breaks my heart.”

Increase Your Energy Savings With Garage Door Repairs And Insulation
Insulated garage doors with weather stripping can make your entire house more energy efficient. This post will help you discover how your garage door can affect your utility bill.
The problem
In general, homeowners work hard to reduce their energy costs. Even with insulated windows and home cooling and heating system upgrades, utility bills will still reflect one of the largest areas of your home: the garage. This space has a very high impact on the thermal comfort of your home and the garage itself.
Materials and insulation value
Garage doors are made from various materials such as wood, steel, fiberglass, vinyl, and aluminum. If you do not know it already, you should find out the insulation value of your garage door. A higher R-value means better thermal efficiency. Insulated doors have a metal skin over a rigid core, which is made from either polystyrene or polyurethane. It is important to note that the latter, polyurethane, provides twice the R-value of polystyrene. In addition to a better insulation core, higher-quality doors may have a textured, colored, or contoured surface.
Prices vary, so carefully compare both performance and style. If purchasing a new door is not within your current budget, consider buying a foam installation kit, or calling a garage door repair service for advice on outfitting your current door.
Benefits
Energy savings are the most obvious benefit. As utility bills continue to rise, a new door will begin to pay for itself in savings soon after installation. There are, however, many other benefits to installing an insulated door.
With increased temperature control, the garage area as well as adjacent rooms in your house will be kept cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This also makes the garage more conducive for use as a workshop or recreational area. In addition, insulation will help soundproof your garage doors.
A more thermal efficient garage also means a reduction in temperature extremes inside your car. This will reduce the amount of time needed to cool down or warm up the air inside your car before you get in, while decreasing your level of personal discomfort due to temperature changes as you exit your car.
Adding a weather seal or perimeter weather seal system around the door is incredibly important for temperature control, as well as to prevent rain and snow from seeping into the garage. Along with actual garage door repairs, the other entrances, such as a back door or side windows, should be considered. If your house has an attached garage with a door leading to the interior, this door should also have insulation and weather stripping.
Call a garage door repair specialist for proper installation
When it comes to reducing energy expenditures, the installation of your new garage door or weather seal system makes all the difference. The door must be properly sealed on all four sides to avoid a leak which would let in inclement weather in addition to unwanted temperatures.

QUARANZINE #97
QUARANZINE#97: Daniel R.Quiles. Daniel, a Chicago-based art historian and pandemic poppa par excellence, pulls off something extra great here: a Father's Day issue that also manages to reference the previous issue of QUARANZINE. For today's zine, we check out a forest preserve once again (this time in Skokie) and then explore the dead spaces of Logan Square, all with young children in tow. I hope everyone has a wonderful day today, with family or without.

Why a bus?
The bus is currently in Skokie, I left it until I could be sure I had plates and had a place to park it. I was doing dinner if my research on the fly since I decided to make the purchase so quickly. Looking at the prices of the other buses on Craigslist and the condition of the one I bought, it felt like a pretty good bargain. Apparently I hadn't actually told my husband hot much it cost and when I did tell him he was pleasantly surprised! $3000 is really a pretty good price for any vehicle of that age that runs so well. It's a diesel all the fact that it has attend 130,000 miles on it is a non-issue. She's really just getting warmed up. Her life up to this point consisted of driving kids in CPS to special education classes. So what will the bus do in it's next life and why did I buy it?
I briefly mentioned Bonnaroo in my first post. I had been looking for a vehicle to take to music festivals, Bonnaroo in particular. I'm a huge Volkswagen fan and have always wanted to own a VW Bus if some kind, but they're such collector's items that it's really difficult to get one for a decent price and if you do I'll probably need a lot of work and will be difficult to maintain. The engine would need to be rebuilt or replaced and they tend to have a lot of body rust, especially in Illinois. They're much easier to get in California, but still pricey. I know the current owners of @therealroobus and there's is a bit of a different situation because they bought it already converted, but they love taking it to Bonnaroo and have been doing great things in our community. I hadn't bought one yet because I camp in group camping and a regular bus would have to park in RV. However, I saw a short bus in group this year and thought well that would be a lot more manageable wouldn't it? I would prefer having more space, but the size allows me to park it more easily and the renovation would be cheaper. I should still be able to sleep 4 to 6 people with no problem an still get a kitchenette and hopefully a very small bathroom. I haven't decided for sure yet, once I have it here and can measure it I'll know for sure what I want to do.
Every year we pack up our stuff and drive the Pathfinder to Tennessee to attend Bonnaroo and seeing as how I'm the most organized, the responsibility for pretty much everything falls on me. We camp with Reddaroo in group and I run a craft beer exchange every year so we bring a lot of stuff. This year packing was a nightmare and I couldn't get everything in one car and had to bring my beetle at the last minute. I thought how nice it would be to have an vehicle that we could sleep in but still camp in group camping! My husband want a huge fan on the idea of a VW Bus, but said he likes the school bus much better. He's over 6' talk and weighs 350lbs and the VW sounded small. He says he likes the idea of a school bus because he'll be able to stand up and really walk around in it. I think it'll give us that space we're looking for with a manageable size. When I took it for the test drive it really drove smoothly! I couldn't even tell I was driving a diesel, it reminded me of driving my parents' Chevy Suburban when I was a kid. Also, this is actually a Chevy! A Chevy Thomas to be exact. It should be relatively easy to get it serviced.
Now I can do this remodel however I want to so I can have something ready to go, I can throw in a dufflr bag of clothes and drive it in to a festival and bam! No setup, just park and camp. And the fun things we can do with it too! A ladder to the top and we can easily turn it into a DJ booth or a dance floor. Our camp cooks food every year, I could throw a hitch on it and fabricate a grill that can attach at the hitch. I'd just back it in to wherever the kitchen will be and cook right off the bus. If I can get a fridge in there it would be ideal for storing the camp's food without having to keep coolers full of ice and chicken all weekend. I'll also be investigating solar panels as a partial energy source instead of just a generator. I'm about to get some for the roof of my house so I'm already researching them.
A lot of these are just me throwing out ideas. Hopefully I'll be able to actually start implementing some of these soon. Then I just need something creative to do with the dozen bus seats I'll have left over!
I also have plans to attend burning man as soon as my schedule permits. I think this will make a nice vehicle for that. I'll be able to invite a couple of friends to join me with all the space I have and should have enough amenities to make it a fairly comfortable trip.
As I get into the nitty gritty I'll post about my trials and tribulations. I'm not one who generally thinks people care what I have to say, but other blogs have been really helpful to me so far with information on the legalities and clever ideas for the transformation so if I can put more of that out there to help someone else I would like to. So let's get going!

The Things to Consider When Choosing a Cleaning Company
Tumblr media
Cleaning is one of the chores that are of the essence for the comfort and livability of a home or commercial space. Looking at these chores and the need to ensure that they are thoroughly done and as such the kind that will meet your needs and expectations, going about them on your own will not quite suffice and as such the need to bring in the services of the professional cleaning services to ensure that this is met.
This said and done, the catch for many has been with the need to find the most professional and ideal cleaning companies that will serve them to the most, even looking at the fact that there are quite a number of the cleaning services out there all who pose as the best for your needs. To make this easier and avoid the challenges of choosing a cleaning company that will be ideal for your needs, check out the following tips for an idea of what you need to take into consideration when picking one that will serve you best.
Get references from the cleaning company. By and large, a good cleaning company such as Skokie cleaning service will be ready to get your references to help you vouch the quality of the service that they actually offer.
It is as well important to look at the experience and training level of the staff that they will have deployed to your service. Even though, the staff may be as trained and experienced, the other element of training that you need to look into as you review the suitability of the cleaning company is the provisions that they actually have when it comes to ongoing training for the staff as this ensures that they are duly equipped with the relevant skills and trends touching on the cleaning industry. For further details, please read more here.
The other essential aspect to look at when reviewing the best of the cleaning companies to deal with is the insurance and certification status of the company. You need to see to it that the cleaning company you choose is one that is duly insured and certified for the service so as to ensure the safety of your business at the very least. Talking of safety, you need to as well make sure that you settle for a deal with a cleaning company that is as well in compliance with the occupational safety standards such as OSHA standards.

Work was busy every day this week, but I have the weekend off and a slightly lighter Monday to start things off with. The end of daylight savings is upon is, and there’s five or six days of good weather left before we full-on crash into winter. Today was gray and windy, breaking branches off of precious trees.
My headlight’s still not fixed, my ID’s not replaced, and I am uninformed about the upcoming midterms, but I’ll try to get everything taken care of by Tuesday. In the meantime, I’ve done well enough at driving before dark, cutting it a little close sometimes. Thursday I took a risk that paid off on a drive to the mall in Skokie for some returns, saw lots of nice trees along the way, and made it back as the sun was setting. Meanwhile, Buffalo Creek’s trees are bare, and I’m still trying to get a handle on the fall foliage distributions over time and space.
After more than a month, my floors and surfaces are finally clear of clutter, slowly getting clear of dust and and dirt as well, and what. a. relief. What a sense of peace and love for this space sets in once it looks and feels how it’s supposed to. Today I went through my purses and mail, threw away a bunch of garbage, put away some laundry, washed some of the floor, and delighted in my shoe rack, which not only helps organize my entryway but also legit looks good in this space, lets me move nine pairs of shoes out of the way at once when I’m cleaning the floor, and gives me a relatively out-of-sight place to put my piles of mail.
The past two days, I’ve had dinner cravings for things I didn’t have and couldn’t buy because it was too late with my broken light; hope I’ll fare better in the days ahead. Tried takoyaki for the first time earlier this week, which felt a bit like sacrilege given octopus intelligence; thankfully, I didn’t love it.
I’ve been browsing a lot of Tumblr, having acquired a solid collection of blogs to follow after a dry period, and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. I do think I could stand to limit the time I spend here a little more sometimes, without really losing out, and need to be careful, as always, about going on autopilot with the internet. That being said, it’s a much better use of my online time than some of the other stuff I got caught up in over the past couple of years, so eh.

Mike was looking to do more than just take over Bill’s role as bread baker he wanted to expand the business. At that time, Bill Simon was in his eighties and was thinking about retiring from the business … sort of. Mike bought into Simon Brothers Bakery in 1970, a few years out of high school. Tell Me Something Good is a simple challenge that prompts bloggers to share a nugget of positive news or wisdom and it’s started by the creator of A Momma’s View.
So for all of you who would like to play along and stick to the rules, here they are:
I enjoyed the neighborhood Monday cocktail (or wine), appetizers and conversation. I love that the neighbors or a few of them gather regularly in the summer months. Everyone brings their own drink and an appetizer to share.
I’m getting excited and planning my short trip to New York in a few weeks. I’ll be going to my sister’s wedding on the 26th and will be there till the 30th.
I’ve been enjoying volunteering at two different libraries. In Northbrook, I get to help out in the maker space and at Skokie I’m helping in Readers’ Service and A/V. In both areas I am learning a lot.
I savored the elegance of Gilded Age portraits like these at the Drieshaus Museum’s member’s preview of their newly opened exhibit.
It’s easy:
• Mention something that you consider being good in the comments
• Or write a post about it on your blog (please don’t forget the pingback if you do so I don’t miss out and also share the link to it in the comments below). Something good that happened to you recently, or something good you will experience in a little while, or something good you know will happen soon. Something that makes you feel good.
• Share this post and invite your followers as well.

This notion of armed leftists fighting neo-Nazi gangs in all-out street warfare is incredible to me. Like, do these people not know about Skokie? Did they never hear about the massive Nazi rallies in NYC during the 1930s? Or rallies that made national news in the 90s, and if memory serves were larger than anything we've seen recently? I feel actual numbers of neo-Nazis have been declining for decades and yet we're hearing rhetoric that Brown-shirt takeover of American cities is imminent. Wild.
Their blueprint appears to be a largely imaginary history where the Black Panthers carved out a space for themselves by intimidating cops with their badass guns.
