↳ A CLOSER LOOK:
Though Avery was adventurous, dreamer, and an over-achiever as a young child, as she grew up, she realized that there was no use in dreaming; that all the adventure she would get was in the books she loved to read on a daily basis. When she was old enough to really notice things and pay attention to them, she realized that everyone her parents knew and everyone their parents knew had more or less stayed in Cotton Plant. Their hometown was usually everyone’s first and only stop.
Once she became a teenager and realized that she wouldn’t be going anywhere and instead would be one of the many who remained in Cotton Plant, Avery tried less and less in school, and eventually, only barely managed to graduate high school and hadn’t given higher education a second thought. Her teachers mourned her decision to forego enrolling in university, knowing she was intelligent enough to study English and Literature in college. Though her GPA didn’t show it, her standardized exam scores did, as she almost received a perfect score in her SATs.
After a long day at work, Avery’s favorite past time is drinking, smoking and being able to let loose. Though she would swear that she doesn’t have a problem, and that she hasn’t ever had a problem with alcohol, she does heavily rely on the buzz beers and hard liquor give her on a nightly basis. It’s what makes her feel better about becoming yet another person who didn’t dare leave Cotton Plant.
On her twenty-fourth birthday, Avery and her girlfriend of what seemed like a lifetime decided to take a little roadtrip to Las Vegas. As fate would have it, they had too many drinks and ended up being just another statistic; just another cliché. They ended up married, though with only blurs to remind them of the previous night. To Avery, what seemed like fate only felt like a nightmare to her partner. Once back home, all they could do was fight; while one of them wanted to stay married, that was the last thing the other wanted. Eventually, push came to shove and they decided that ending things would be the best for them. They loved each other too much to continue fighting day in and day out. Although they haven’t divorced or asked for an annulment, their relationship — their friendship, even — is strained, and Avery has no idea how to fix it without ending things completely.
After her relationship failed, at the last possible second, Avery enrolled at Arkansas College - Brinkley. Avery had extra money saved up and ultimately decided that studying what she loved so much as a child wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Though she’s just a part-time student and she’s busier than ever now, she knows she made the right decision for herself — especially since it keeps her busier than before. The last thing Avery wants is to think about what went wrong. The last thing she wants to think about is how she’d manage to be a married woman, who’s now separated from her wife. How does something like that happen to her?
