Youngjae glanced around the lavishly decorated venue, tucked away in the East end of the Royal Gardens, right by the backdoors of the Palace’s kitchens. In a distance, a lady dressed in white robes played a golden harp with emotion and grace, the soothing notes serving as a peaceful backdrop to the low hum of chatter. The coronet weighed heavily upon his head as he caught a glimpse of his parents, the King and the Queen of the land, engaging in serious conversation with a group of wealthy noblemen. The prince paid no heed to the lace-detailed tablecloths or the golden-rimmed cutlery or the golden-white-themed centrepieces meticulously selected by his mother for this afternoon’s luncheon – his birthday luncheon.

Instead, he found his eyes drifting towards you. He watched as the midday sunshine glittered against your skin, illuminating your soft features. He admired your outfit for today’s special occasion, a floor-length, emerald green dress complete with a corset-style lacing that accentuated your curves. He gazed lovingly at your amazed, childlike expression as you bit into the royal pastry chef’s latest creation, a buttery, flaky pastry spread with strawberry preserves. He thought you looked completely in your element at that moment, sitting in a garden amongst clusters of white and pink everlastings while indulging in the finest expertly crafted treats.

“What is this sweet and magical delicacy?” You wondered, turning to face him with pure sparkles in your eyes and tiny crumbs at the edges of your mouth.

Youngjae couldn’t help the soft smile of admiration that graced his lips. “Chef Wang hasn’t decided on a name yet.” He informed you, in awe of how such simple things in life could bring you so much joy. “I think he wants to call it a ‘scone’.”

“But why?” You asked, washing down another sinful bite with a cool sip of milk.

The prince shrugged, “Said something about rhyming with ‘stone’. Wait,” Youngjae reached for your chair and dragged you towards to him with surprising ease. “You’re not enjoying it to its maximum potential. Here,” He scooped a huge spoonful of clotted cream from his bowl and plopped it onto your plate. “Try it with the cream, it’s at least ten times better.”

You raised your eyebrows in suspicion. You never had a pastry dipped in cream before. Uncertain, you picked up a piece of pastry and dunked it into the pile of white cream. “Like this?”

“No, no.” Youngjae shook his head, emitting a teasing laugh. He stole the pastry from your fingers and expertly spread a little white cloud of cream on top. Once he was done, the prince held it mere centimetres away from your face. “Say ah…”

“Wh-what?” You stuttered, slightly flustered at his blatant display of affection. “But I… But your parents, they–”

“Come on, come a little closer, you’ve got to have it with the cream. Trust me.” Youngjae didn’t move an inch, rather waiting patiently for you to take a bite. He noticed the mild fidgeting and the flickering gaze, reluctance written clearly upon your face. “Let me remind you that I turn twenty-one today, my Lady. They no longer have a say in my personal matters, especially matters of the heart. If I want to feed my lover in a garden full of royals and nobles, then I shall do as I please.”

“Yes, Your Highness…” You replied finally, a light tinge of pink colouring the apples of your cheeks.

You leaned forwards, aiming your mouth towards his outstretched fingers. In the last second before your lips touched the cream-covered dessert, Youngjae swiftly angled it upwards towards your nose.

“Got you!” The mischievous prince sported a shit-eating grin as he watched you squeal in shock, your nose now covered with a thin layer of white. Youngjae thought you looked cute.

It was clear you thought otherwise. Not willing to back down, you dipped a thumb into the cream and smeared it onto his chin before he could move away. “Got you too!” You stuck your tongue out, savouring a short five second victory which was quickly cut short by Youngjae’s threatening glare as he reached for the entire bowl of cream.

“Oh, you’re going down.”
