Continuing our trek through unrequested sequels to last year’s The Night X Came Home entries, today we look at the sequel to 1980’s Prom Night, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis. Last year, I analyzed the film under the name “The Night THE UNGAINLY SPAWN OF LESLIE NIELSEN Came Home,” and concluded that it did an respectable job of encapsulating one’s Prom Night experience… in that it promised great excitement, but ended up being a bunch of awkward bumbling around and negligible teen drama. The bomb lands by Mary Lou’s feet, but, rather than going off, the fuse catches her dress on fire. Watching their classmate becoming quickly engulfed in flames, the fellow prom-goers react in the way all sensible, responsible people would, and put out the fire. Movie’s over. Roll Credits.

Hahaha! Just kidding! They do nothing! Absolutely nothing! They just stand there and watch her burn. No stop, drop, and roll.  No patting down with a jacket. No rush to activate the sprinklers, or get a bucket of water, or a hose, or maybe the punch bowl (…actually, considering someone probably spiked the punch at this high school prom, maybe not.)

There’s even a shot of Buddy collapsed on the steps to the stage, pounding the ground in frustration. If only there was something that could be done! If only there was some way to put out a fire!! But, alas, fires are indestructible, as everyone knows, and so Buddy continues to pound the ground and cry. What a tragedy. And so, Mary Lou burns to death, staring menacingly at Billy on the rafters.

We cut, and it’s now 30 years later (not that the film provides an intertitle to inform us of this fact, because basic, age-old storytelling techniques are hard sometimes.) Vicki Carpenter is a well-behaved teenager, and one of five contenders for Queen at this year’s high school Prom. Vicki is very excited to go with her boyfriend, Craig, who bequeaths her with a cross necklace, the kind of gift that no romantic partners would ever get for one another were they not anticipating ghostly possessions later in the plot.

You know what would have been a better gift, Craig? A prom dress! Because now Vikki has no prom dress. Unable to acquire a dress, Vikki decides to venture into the basement of Hamilton High, open up a locked chest, and borrow Mary Lou’s prom dress from the 50s, releasing her spirit in the process. But, noooo, Craig! You had to go with the cross necklace! Although, to be fair, prom dresses are a scam. I’d probably risk ghostly possession over having to pay $300 for a dress you wear once…

With the ghost of Mary Lou now unleashed, Vikki begins to experience hallucinations around school, clearly designed to capitalize on the contemporary success of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Hallucinations include a gym volleyball net being transformed into a giant spider’s web, hallucinating that one of her fellow classmates transformed into Mary Lou, and the cafeteria being infested by maggots and other bugs. 

…Actually, not sure that last one was a hallucination. Might have just been a regular high school cafeteria.

 There is a lot of great 80s charm in these hallucination sequences, and I mean, hey, can’t really fault Hello Mary Lou! for wanting to steal from the best slasher ever, as opposed to… whatever its first film was. 

This rip-off approach also allows the film to present one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever seen in a horror film. Not even joking, guys. Hello Mary Lou! Prom Night II terrified me to my core. Deep in the corner of Vikki’s bedroom sits a white plastic rocking horse… a rocking horse that looks eerily like one that I used to have as a child. As Vikki sleeps, the eyes of the rocking horse roll over to gaze at her, and an organic looking tongue slithers around in its mouth. It rocks back and forth, not breaking its gaze! 

Oh god, go back to the dopey masked killer from Prom Night 1, please! I was wrong, I don’t want this Prom Night II! Go Back! AAHHH! F–k you, Mary Lou!!

The rocking horse was horrifying enough, but Prom Night Part II soon unleashes the truly most terrifying aspect of Mary Lou’s haunting. In her bedroom, Vikki looks into the mirror, enters a trance-like state, and…. puts… on… lipstick! The horror! Can you imagine?! Vikki suddenly snaps out of this trance, and wipes the lipstick off, but it is too late! She is slowly succumbing to the worst fate that can befall a woman, one that is almost too horrible for words. Being… in…. charge… of…. her sexuality! Quickly, she must be stopped before she gains any more autonomy!

Terrified with her recent uncontrollable rebellious behavior, Vikki goes to visit her local priest, none other than a grown up Buddy Cooper, Mary Lou’s beau from the opening scene. In the confession booth, Vikki relays the story of all her recent hallucinations to Buddy. Huh,  I didn’t realize that Prom Queen ghost hallucinations were a sin that needed confessing. Catholic guilt is way more intense than I thought. 

After Laura mentions Mary Lou Maloney, Buddy gets distressed. He later visits Mary Lou’s grave, only to have his Bible burst into flames. Fearing that Mary Lou has returned, he goes to visit adult Billy, now the principal of Hamilton High and played by one of those actors that you don’t understand why they’re in so much trash when they have actual talent, Michael Ironside. 

“If a person dies violently, they’ll wander purgatory, waiting to return!” Buddy expositions. “She’ll possess you if you don’t take Communion!” Aw man, not only are having hallucinations a sin, but there’s this too! Catholicism is just way too complicated for me! I mean, hey, I knew there were disagreements on Communion about transubstantiation and all that, but this whole “preventing Prom Queen ghost possession” seems to be a pretty pertinent issue as well.

Not that it matters anyway, since Mary Lou seemingly has no intention of possessing these characters that randomly popped back into the plot anyway. Vikki is now in detention after slapping that fellow student she hallucinated to be Mary Lou, because someone in this administration actually cares, despite the fact that the man who burned a Prom Queen to death 30 years ago gets to run the place. In detention, Vikki gets sucked into a blackboard, and winds up in the basement again. She has now been fully possessed by the spirit of Mary Lou, as signified by the fact that she is now naked, because, remember, female sexuality = evil. 

The sexual politics of this film truly are fascinating. The now possessed Vikki actually bucks typical movie stereotypes, dressing even more conservatively, as Mary Lou resorts back to her 50s clothing. Nevertheless, sex is still the primary weapon of Mary Lou. 

In the locker room, fellow Prom Queen contender Monica confronts Vikki over this new, bizarre change of personality, noticing an unmistakable sign that something is not right. “Who says ‘swell’ anymore?” she questions.  I don’t know, Monica, “swell” is still a fairly common word. Haven’t you ever heard of the saying “All swell that end swell?” Well, maybe not, because all does not end swell for Monica.

After Monica steps into the shower, the possessed Vikki steps in as well, and leans over to kiss her. Well, hey, high school is a good time to experiment, I suppose. You never know if you might be sexually attracted to people possessed by ghosts from the 50s! Monica pushes Vikki back, runs away terrified, and hides in a locker. Considering that Vikki has made no attempts to murder her yet, Monica’s extreme reaction seems entirely caused by the threat to her sexuality. In the most memorable kill of the movie, Vikki walks up to the locker, and telekinetically crushes them, causing Monica’s blood to ooze out of the vents. It’s a neat practical effect. That’ll do, Mary Lou!

After getting revenge on Buddy by killing him with a crucifix, Vikki reveals to Billy that she is secretly Mary Lou, back for revenge, after seductively sitting on his lap. Billy makes no real effort to stop this underage student from grinding on his lap, further proving that this man should not be running this administration. 

Then, it’s time once again for Prom Night! Wearing the stolen Prom dress that started this whole thing, possessed Vikki sits in her bedroom... on the rocking horse… stroking its face as its organic tongue once again flails around. Turns out this rocking horse isn’t the most disturbing thing that this film has to offer though! Vikki’s dad enters, and regales her with the tale of his first Prom Night, telling her that this is a night she will remember forever. “I hope so,” Vikki says, as she walks up, and starts kissing him. Kissing her father. I told you, Mary Lou just loves to screw, and doesn’t care who!

Now, you might be saying, well, it’s Mary Lou controlling her body, so it’s not like Vikki is willingly attempting incest. And, you’re right. She’s not… but he is. Yes, as his daughter walks up to him and begins to kiss him, her father kisses her back, and the two make-out for a minute, until the mom enters the room and Vikki walks away. This is never addressed again.

As the film continues to build towards Prom Night, there’s a subplot where Kelly, another one of the Prom Queen nominees, gives a nerdy kid a blowjob so that he’ll rig the competition in her favor, but both are electrocuted by Mary Lou through a computer. I would elaborate more on this subplot, but, well, it just wasn’t very good. In fact, it blew, Mary Lou!

And, so, at the Prom, Vikki is crowned queen. Pretty much none of the other contenders are even alive any more, but no one at this school seems to really care about that. As she takes the stage to receive her crown, Billy once again takes to the rafters, his perfect vantage point for murdering Prom Queens which the school apparently did not consider worth removing in the in-between years. This time, Billy is armed not with a stink bomb, but with a pistol, because, again, this guy really should not be running a school. 

There is a kind of morbid humor in the extremity of the whole thing, as Prom Night II follows up its incest with a principal shooting the Prom Queen in cold blood, right in the view of her boyfriend who is still unaware of the possession. You know, everyone is this movie is going to have a lot of explaining to do once this whole possession thing wraps up....

As Craig holds Vikki’s body in his arms, her flesh rips open, revealing the true Mary Lou underneath, who proceeds to wreck telekinetic havoc on the Prom. It’s like Carrie… but not like that at all. 

Mary Lou chases Craig to the basement, and is about to kill him, when Billy appears again, and crowns her Prom Queen, causing her to disappear. Huh, so if that’s all it took, maybe you should have just let that whole crowning ceremony go forward as planned then, instead of shooting one of your students, huh, Billy?  

Anyway, with Mary Lou gone, Craig hears Vikki call out from that old chest in the basement. Craig knows that it is the true Vikki, because she holds that now-plot-convenient-but-still-horribly unromantic cross necklace. Craig and Vikki walk outside, find Billy, and get into a car to drive away. 

In the car, Billy turns on the radio. It plays “Hello, Mary Lou” by Ricky Nelson. Billy turns around, his eyes shining as if possessed, indicating he never did get around to taking that Communion! Billy drives away laughing, his license plate reading “MARY LU-2,” a custom job that presumably was just serendipitous, considering I don’t know when Mary Lou found the time to go to the DMV during all this.

And so, another year, another Prom Night. What Hello Mary Lou! lacks in not having the presence of Jamie Lee Curtis or Leslie Nielsen from the first one, it makes up for in sheer absurdity, drastically shifting the tone and style of the series within just one sequel. But, hey, it wouldn’t be high school without an identity crisis, I suppose. Like most horror films, its final scare allows it to escape having to deal with the ramifications of many of its events, meaning we never find out what happens to the Carpenter family now that it’s been revealed the dad really wants to screw his daughter. We also never get to find out what happens to that rocking horse…. meaning it could still be out there! Maybe even right behind you as you read this!! OH MY GOD!!  

Yeah, the incest is probably more disturbing. And so, Hello Mary Lou!, I bid you adieu.

8 Minimalist Vacation Packing Tips I Absolutely Swear By

I’m an under-packer by nature. I try to travel with one carry-on only (usually a backpack)—even when I’m leaving the country for a while and even when I’m traveling with my 3-year-old son. Sounds crazy, I know. And while it’s true this method has occasionally led me to seriously questionable hiking footwear (and definitely led me to 10 days in Scandinavia with only one pair of pants), for the most part, it is a truly liberating way to travel. Doing a one-backpack trip forces me to sit down and think about what I—and my son—truly need and what we can live with out. It almost turns last-minute packing an hour before the airport drive into a moving meditation on materialism and our existence as a human society… almost.

But even with the most minimalist of packing, I usually end up on a vacation with a decidedly un-minimalist schedule—and an overburdened frame of mind. There are hotels to book and tours to take and sights to see and reservations to make, not to mention inevitable souvenir shopping that completely undoes the whole one-backpack logic in the first place.

And after a week or so of that plus who knows how many flights/hours on the road? Well, I end up back home needing a vacation from my vacation. Sound familiar?

That’s why I decided it was time for me, the minimalist packer, to become and actual minimalist traveler—to plan a vacation that involved bringing, using, planning and doing as little as possible. Enter the plastic tiny house, a 170-square-foot energy-efficient home chilling (or rather, heating up) in the desert outside Phoenix, Arizona. (It was designed by Tiny House Nation host Zack Giffin, NBD). Just by the nature of choosing this as my temporary home, I was already hopping on the minimalist bandwagon. This particular 170-square-foot and super-energy-efficient tiny house made of plastic is a testimony to how little we can use if we just think creatively (and a sink that feeds gray water directly into the toilet system doesn’t hurt).

That’s right. I headed to the Arizona desert in August to spend my vacation in 170 square feet with the bare necessities, no other humans and certainly no restaurant reservations. And just to make my minimalist vacation extra-official, I brought: one pair of shoes, six items of clothing (including underwear) and a toothbrush/toothpaste. And that’s it. And it was the best vacation I’ve taken in a long time.

So if you’re the type who thinks travel has to involve endless planning, scheduling, packing multiple suitcases, booking hotels, tours and dining options, think again. This is how deciding to take that minimalist vacation to a tiny house in the desert, packing essentially nothing, changed the game for this traveling mom.

Why you should take a minimalist vacation

It’s cheaper

That part’s a given. If you’re doing less, you’re spending less. Aim to spend on the bare-bones.

Lodging: No hotels! Aim for an affordable Airbnb, or better yet, arrange a free home exchange through a site like Kid & Coe.

Transportation: Bonus if you drive or take public transport to your destination rather than flying.

Food: Groceries, not restaurant bills.

Leave the entertainment part of the budget at $0—and see where it takes you.

It requires less planning beforehand

With an entertainment budget and schedule set at zero, you can save your at-home hours before the trip and those frantic last-minute Google searches for places to stay/eat/see. Instead, let your vacation “plans” involve walking out your door in the morning and seeing where your stroll takes you.

The getting-there part is way easier

Embarking on a six-hour (or 16-hour) flight is exhausting enough already. Do you really need to add multiple pieces of luggage and a trip to baggage claim to your already (literally) burdened shoulders? No. Pack only the essentials—and then remove five things from your bag before you go. You’ll be surprised what you can do without.

It forces you to be resourceful

I stand by the statement, “You’ll be surprised what you can do without.” That said, for my tiny house trip, I wildly under-packed—on purpose, of course—and in my minimization discovered two things I hadn’t packed it turned out I sorely missed, especially in the dry Arizona summer: a hair tie and lip balm. But you’d better believe I scavenged through that house to find an old elastic tag that I used to tie my hair up for the whole trip. Oh, and I absolutely put kitchen olive oil on my lips every night. #NoRegrets

It forces you to focus on yourself (for better or worse)

Guess what. When you’re alone in a tiny house in the desert (or a cabin in the woods or a yurt on the mountain or whatever your preferred solo-minimalist vacation locale may be), you cannot just keep busy and la-la-la your way through life and ignore whatever it is you really need/need to work on/need to give up. Your shit will rise up to the surface, and you will have to confront it. But hey, the only way out is through, baby.

I do want to note here that I don’t equate a minimalist vacation to “roughing it.” Any sort of camping/backpacking/what-have-you trip that involves trekking through the woods, setting up a tent, conjuring up a fire and all your meals and hauling ass to some dark bug-infested corner of the forest in order to “go to the bathroom” is all very admirable—but it’s not quite what I mean by minimalist. Because that shit involves work. Camping/backpacking, strangely like taking a fancy multi-hotel tour of Europe, does involve a lot of planning and preparing (isn’t that literally the Boy Scout motto?) and pretty much constant effort to keep that whole staying-alive-in-the-wilderness thing afloat.

For me, in this moment, I wanted a trip that still landed solidly in the vacation category of travel: somewhere warm and habitable with pre-appointed (indoor) lodgings and an actual toilet. You know, the basics that roughing it doesn’t quite provide. And I lucked out in that my tiny house was pre-stocked with some basic food as well: milk, coffee, eggs, butter. All of this is to say that this precise midpoint between roughing it and your typical vacation got me exactly where I wanted to get: the middle of the desert with absolutely nothing to do.

So, how do you take a minimalist vacation?

Book early

This is key both for planning-stress levels as well as pricing.

Pack light (duh)

See above re: items of clothing, toothbrush, sunscreen. I promise you can do it.

Don’t pack shoes—I mean it

This is my No. 1 packing tip for all forms of travel, but especially if you’re aiming for minimalism. You’re not going to a wedding here, nor are you climbing Everest. Whatever isolated locale you choose, plan to wear—not pack—one pair of sturdy, oh-so-comfortable footwear that will actually last you the whole week or however long you’re gone. If you’re heading to the hills, hiking boots. If you’re beaching it, Birkenstocks. As long as they’re comfy, who cares what they look like? Nobody will be looking at your feet anyway.

Get outside your comfort zone with food

Yes, sure, you have favorite meals and favorite recipes and favorite restaurants. But what’s something super-simple you can cook just for yourself literally every day for a week? Make yourself one big epic pot of soup and see how long it lasts or dive into the wondrous world of kitchari. It won’t be fancy, but you will be full. And just see how much brain space you end up with when you’re not thinking about meal planning every single day.

Move your body in new ways

This whole thing goes out the window if you sit in your tiny house like a rock for a week. You will not feel good if your minimalist vacation involves being horizontal the entire time. But no, you will not have access to SoulCycle or a hotel gym. So get creative. Take a walk, a hike, a run, a jump-around-the-lake-five-times. Try your hand at a solo at-home yoga practice even if you’ve only ever taken two classes before. Get in your body and see what feels good. Bonus points if you really see what feels good. You are on a solo vacation, after all.

Expect to go without

So, you’ve never gone a week without makeup? Or shampoo? What about deodorant? I see you cringing. But remember, this is your minimalist vacation. You are likely all alone—or as is so often my case, “alone” with a child in tow—and nobody cares about how your hair looks. Of course, this is not to say you should go a week without key prescription medication or brushing your teeth. But that hairdryer/concealer/five-step facial-moisturizing system? Leave it behind. And while you’re at it, see if you can leave your social media accounts behind too. I dare you.

Do pack one (tech-free) thing to “do”

Whether it’s that poetry book you’re reading (or writing!), a journal, a sketchbook or even your knitting, there will be times your mind needs a break from all that quiet time with itself. Give it one that will also fuel it.

For me, in my borrowed tiny house, the sheer lack of stuff to do—no tent-setting, fire-building, bear-repelling, or shit hole-scouting, but also no sightseeing, navigating, appointment-setting or museum-hopping—left me no choice but to face what I had come to face: myself. I wrote. I meditated. I walked. I cooked some eggs. I took the longest shower possible because, as opposed to my showers at home that are hastily sandwiched between dishes, laundry, lunch-packing, school drop-off and the workday (it’s a wonder working single moms shower at all, honestly), I had no schedule to rush off to, nothing to be inevitably late to and no reason to feel guilty or ashamed for happily standing under hot water for half an hour. Other than, you know, water waste and the environment. Damn it.

On my minimalist vacation, I had zero plans. I had to—I got to—face many small, strange situations and feelings that are entirely alien in my regular life: silence, solitude, boredom, ease, freedom, peace.

And guess what (this is the sixth and possibly most important reason to take a minimalist vacation)…

The effects extend way beyond the trip itself

All that solo soul-searching? You will definitely carry the aftereffects home with you. There’s nothing quite like a trip that’s based on packing/planning/paying/doing/using less to inspire you to take stock in your life and think about what you actually need going forward—you know, out of the tiny house and back into real life.

One thing’s for certain: You’ll never again forget to appreciate the value of a hair tie.

Telumkinesis - Brock is able to transform weapons into a less harmful material, though this power extends to one weapon at a time. This power also helps Brock to learn how to use weapons much faster than other demigods and humans.

Affiliation: Former Legionnaire and Centurion of the 2nd Cohort.

Headcanons:

1st Dispatch - After leaving the legion, Brock wanted to continue his work with helping keep New Rome safe. He spent a few months as a guard for Peacock’s Nesting, The Vesta Residence, a few of the wineries and bars. Brock was able to say with a proud tone that no one had ever broken into the place that had him on guard duty. Once he took some time off of work, he’d become his neighbors first call when something went wrong. The entire hall had Brock’s phone number on speed dial, though people who were smart knew not to challenge Brock Davis. Still today, even when he’s off duty, Brock gets people asking them to walk him home. It became worse once the Greeks arrived, though it’s given him a certain fire. Brock loves waiting for someone to step out of line so he can push them back in.

The Sober Brother - Brock’s rarely drinks and has never smoked tobacco or marijuana. Any mind altering substance is a big no-go for him. He doesn’t care what reports, studies or findings come out about tobacco and weed, Brock thinks anything that clouds your mind is just a distraction from maintaining order. Brock only drinks when he knows he doesn’t have to work the next day, and usually only has enough to get himself tipsy.

Big Brother - Brock spent his last two years in the 2nd Cohort as Centurion, where he received high marks for keeping an orderly group of legionnaires. Most of the people in the 2nd Cohort at the time already knew Brock well and were willing to follow him into battle.

Sporty Sport - Brock loves competition and knows how to have fun. The man never found a favorite sport, but loves any game that involves winners and losers. A surprisingly calm man when it comes to losing, he’ll try a number of times before giving up to turn that failure into a victory. He’s also well aware that there’s no point in trying to save everyone’s lives if they can’t enjoy it. Though he doesn’t often drink, he does know how to party and has visited all of New Rome’s clubs many times. He’s often there on his nights and days off.

Satyr Hater - Brock, like many New Romans have disdain for the Faun species. Like a plague, they sit on their lazy furry bums while Brock’s people do all the work. He finds their kind to be an infestation and thinks nothing different of their Greek counterpart. He finds it disgusting that while ever Roman had to find their way alone, Satyrs help the Greeks like little children.

Frank Zhang - After the glory that Percy Jackson, Hazel Levesque and Frank Zhang brought Camp Jupiter, Brock was quite proud of his half-brother. He felt cheated many times in that period, feeling as though he was the rightful recipient of Mars’ blessings, though put those thoughts aside, as it was more important that New Rome be safe. But when the war with Gaea came, when the Greeks fought them and Frank came out as Praetor, something seemed wrong. Brock believed firmly that he was the wrong man for the job and that Mars had placed his power mistakenly. As much as he wishes for order, he knows Frank Zhang must leave, unless chaos is to rule.

Biography:

Carson “Brock” was born in Olympia, Washington and lived their until it came time for him to find his way to Camp Jupiter. Between the day of his birth and the day he left for camp though, a lot happened to help shape Brock into being the kind of young boy able to make it to Camp Jupiter.

Mars had given one strict rule to Brock’s mother when her pregnancy was nearing it’s end. Olympia, being so close to Alaska was the only place where Mars could offer them protection. The city itself had a protective layer around which dismayed monsters from coming in, though it wasn’t a perfect shield like the one Camp Half-Blood now had. This city was one of the few areas in the country that wasn’t one of the camps yet still offered protection for demigods. Olympia would be a place where Carson could grow up like a regular kid with a little more safety than other demigods. As such, Brock was never meant to leave the city lines until he was ready for his journey. 

Carson though only remained Carson until he was around five years old. The boy had always hated his name, for that it wasn’t strong enough. As soon as he could understand other people, he understood from his mothers high praise that his father was someone not to be trifled with. Seeing how much of a fighter she was, Carson wanted to be exactly like them. He wanted to create a legacy for his family, and the name Carson didn’t seem to fit. His name was, as some might guess taken from the original Pokemon series. His namesake, Brock the gym leader wasn’t the toughest guy, but Carson loved the idea of rock Pokemon, creatures made to be hard like the earth and mountains.

Now Brock, who grew up in Olympia never had a shortage of things to do. His mother didn’t want him to be a brute soldier who just used his hands to settle all his problems, because raising his fist was something he naturally did when any threat came about. It was like he didn’t have a switch on the fight or flight expression. So she took him to museums, art galleries and put him in the best starting school in the area. She would remind him often that everything he would need to protect himself and protect others was in his brain, and that everything he did to help others was an extension and product of how smart you were.

His intellect helped him, but so did his natural strength and senses. When he was eight, he noticed that he could hear things other people couldn’t. His strength was a lot greater than the other kids, even though he wasn’t the most athletic one in his grade. He could pick up someone his size with little effort.

By thirteen, Brock knew that his father was a person like nobody else and that other children wouldn’t understand it. It never bothered him that he didn’t actually know who his dad was, but not because many other children had one parent too. Whenever Brock was able to settle a dispute between two parties or he claimed victory in a contest, he knew that his father was proud of him. He could feel it in a way that didn’t fully make sense to a kid.

And by that age, Brock was ready to leave for something greater. Since he was ten, he’d been telling his mom of strange sightings around the town. Brock would comment on a flock of birds that didn’t look quite right, or he would out right refuse to go into the local donut shop, because it didn’t seem natural that three days ago there was nothing there, not even a plot of land. His mother didn’t seem to notice but she had listened. So when his principal had called him in to reprimand him, for absolutely nothing, Brock could already tell that this wasn’t the person who they were trying to masquerade as. As her mouth watered and she raked her claws along the desk, Brock kicked his chair at her face and ripped the door off it’s hinges and threw that at her too. He made a run for it, going back home only to tell his mom of what he’d experienced. After that, he was off.

With money from his mother, he was able to take bus after bus to the Wolf House, though it wasn’t an easy ride. Many of the stops he got off on were met with prying eyes from both monsters and creeps. Brock had fought off a few men and women bigger than himself on his way to the Wolf House. Enough that he when he met Lupa, the wolf was greeted with a young man marked up with scratches, cuts and bruises. But that nor a talking wolf stopped him from getting to where he was going. Brock passed all of Lupa’s tests, so well in fact she gave him a recommendation herself to be put into the 2nd Cohort when he arrived at Camp Jupiter.

During his time in the 2nd Cohort, Brock made many allies and friends, a few of whom were close enough to call family. He quickly honed his swordsmanship skills and was one of the best when it came to working with a spear. Brock’s powers grew the day he began training at Camp Jupiter. It took him half as long to master the sword compared to the other great warriors there. When he was fourteen, after already spending many months blessing and praising Mars, he was claimed as the gods son. From there, it was practically a cake walk. Once he got through the rigorous exercises and training, fighting came easy. Brock was always ready to grab a weapon and go handle any monster situation that may arise. If there was a fight among his fellow legionnaires, he’d put himself in the middle to try and break the rhythm of chaos. It was to no one’s surprise that he was made Centurion for two years before leaving the Legion.

Leaving wasn’t exactly the plan. But after two wars and with their new Greek allies settling more and more into the city, Brock thought he could protect people better if he was stationed in the city, which led him to being a guard for every big event, every high class social gathering.

Now that there is another war, one he couldn’t stop, Brock is ready to see this war come to an end, before it can get any bloodier. Though it seems at the moment that the only solution would be to destroy the Greeks, less it be the Romans that die.
