-lucifer buys satan rare books while satan buys him limited/ legendary cursed vinyl records

The Magicians 3x01: The Best Episode of Buffy

Abra Cadbra Bishes! It is Magicians time once again! What, did you think I had abandoned recaps all together? Probably a safe assumption honestly due to the way I completely abandoned Dirk Gently Season 2 (now cancelled btdubs) AND parted ways with The Walking Dead. But I could never leave my beautiful Magicians behind. This show is a balm for the troubled mind, a crutch for the broken spirit, a festival of hotties for the thirsty eye.  

There is not a “previously on” long enough to fully remind me of all the plot developments that happened last season. But the glory of the Magicians is that full and comprehensive understanding of the plot is not necessary for enjoyment of the show. In fact the writers themselves seem to acknowledge this in the speedy construction and subsequent introduction of this season’s  main arc. But we’ll get to all of that in a moment - first what DID happen last season? Well most notably the Magicians killed Ember/Umber creators of Fillory, in order to save the magical land. However the big gods frowned upon the culling of the little ones and punished the universe by turning off the magic pipes.  Major buzzkill. 

As for our heroes, One-Eyed Bambi and High King Best Character are attempting to a rule a magic-less kingdom, while at the same time dealing with a full-scale fairy invasion. The Fairy Force is ruthless, demanding, and trickiest of all: invisible to most. Usually I try to start slow and then ramp up to the real highlights or lowlights in an episode, but this time I just can’t wait. I know we are only 13 days into this new baby year, but I am ready to call Margo and Eliot’s subtitled nerd-code forest summit the most joyous thing I will see on TV this year.  I like to imagine the writers of The Magicians just sitting around together, perhaps on toadstools, drinking novelty cocktails and saying, “Hey, you know what would be cool to do?” (See also last season’s Les Mis musical break for further proof of this). What’s more is it’s proof that The Magicians really understands its audience. How SEEN did you guys feel during this? 

This scene, and Margo and Eliot’s storyline (I’m not even gonna TOUCH the Great Cock), is exemplary of why I keep coming back. In a world of dour must-see dramas, and existentially-fraught comedies, The Magicians is unrepentant in its irreverence. Also Margo’s outfits continue to be ON POINT, work it my one-eyed, spy traitor, earth-worm fetching, power pony Queen.

Other things are also happening elsewhere, so let’s talk about everyone else too I guess. On Earth the magic shortage has made prospects pretty grim for everyone. Brakebills might have to shut down, magical knowledge could be lost forever, and parties just aren’t as good. The only person with any sort of spark left is Julia, who after not-killing Reynard last season, is finally getting her groove back. Sensing a righteous quest, Quentin immediately enlists himself as her sidekick. At least he knows his place. 

In order to work their way up the god food chain in an attempt to get more magical intel, the fearless duo first crash a party thrown by the OG party-god, Bacchus. I don’t know if this is a sign I am getting old, but his eight day rave looked totally exhausting to me. I felt dehydrated just seeing those purple mystery shots.  Jokes about his social media ‘following’ will have to sustain me in the post-American Gods television wasteland. Drugs, black lights, booze, and bouts of mental torment are had by all.  

Meanwhile Penny still has his ability to teleport, was the Library exempt from magic-loss? I know they are all sinking into a wormhole and Penny is dying of poison-cancer, isn’t that enough? Luckily Marlee Matlin is BACK to save the day! Her limited interaction with Kady is enough to suggest she will return in the future, which is very excellent news! Magicians always has an A+ guest cast, and with the cavalcade of returning recurs in the opener I am assured this season will be no different. 

So what’s going on now? This episode largely served as a status report for all our favs: Eliot and Margo are in trouble, Q and Julia are friends again, Kady and Penny are the ultimate literal star-crossed lovers, and oh fuck I totally forgot Alice existed. Alice has fallen in with a bad crowd, her new interests are bacon and moody staring.  Aside from that check-in this episode launched a new quest/plot-line for season 3, set to our heroes by the sexiest creature in all of Fillory - The Great Cock. Their mission, should they have to accept it to restore all magic, is to find seven keys! Great! I really appreciate how little the show bothers with backstory or slow set up, they understand this not what we are here for. We are here to forget all of our troubles and find new hairstyles to compliment our eyepatch.

A lot of what he does is really kinda pretentious and mostly suitable as soundtracks for dark nights out.. Don’t get us wrong, we love his work and we’ve been DJing his stuff a lot. But contrary to those pure clubtracks, this one has a lot of soul and a lot of fine layers! a great piece.

This is just straight up 10/10.

05. Schultz and Forever - Backwards

The newest release on our list. He’s really talented. His style does not relate to much that’s out right now. In this very tune alone his voice both sound like Bowie, Springsteen, Future Islands, the list goes on. Very elegant way of combining a lot of references without losing originality.

06. Communions - Midnight Child and She’s a Myth

To us, these guys are the hottest name in rock. Martins vocals are soulful and on point. This band is tight tight tight!

07. Yaeji - Guap 

This is such a crisp track. Very interesting and inspiring take on house music.

08. Code Walk - Guess What (feat. Smerz)

The vocals on this track are beautifully done and feel oh so intriguing.  

09. Girl’s Night Out - Orange Peeling

He also had his debut release on Sound of Copenhagen, just like us. This song is really soothing and the video is fire.

You know that feeling when you move to Bulgaria and your phone breaks not once but twice, so you’re sitting on a 5-hour train cross country without a phone and you’ve finished the book you brought along, at which point you open up Netflix on your computer to watch the movie you’ve downloaded and Error code: U7353-5101 pops up on your screen? Well here I am, keeping my promise to blog out of shear desperation and boredom. No big ideas to muse on or international adventures to speak of, just a girl with an hour to kill on a train as she travels back from NW Bulgaria fresh off of judging a high school speech and debate tournament. Sorry guys.

I guess I should probably fulfill the basic requirements of a travel blog and give you some juicy Stephanie life updates. Last weekend I traveled to Dobrich to meet up with my friends who live in the Northeast – ugh this is boring. I refuse to write like this. Let’s try again, this time stylized in the classic top 5 list.

5 Favorite memories since I last blogged:

1.Judging at the BEST tournament: Bright and early Thursday morning, Maggie and I took the 8:30 to Ruse where we met up with Alexa and Will to travel cross country to judge at the Bulgarian English Speech and Debate tournament in Vratsa. Dang these kids are talented! Over the course of the weekend I judged poetry, prose, and duo and I was blown away. I walked away from judging with major hand cramps and a newfound appreciation for the orchestra and choir directors that were tasked with herding masses of high schoolers every year at regional auditions.

2. Monday night Dance class: I never know what I’m getting myself into when I walk into folk dance class on Mondays. Maybe it’s a routine I’ve learned, maybe it’s something I’ve never seen but I’m thrown in with the expectation that I’ll pick up the steps quick enough? This Monday, completely out of left field, was a Horo group featuring a few of the usual subjects minus the high schoolers and with the fun addition of many older ladies and men. A radical shift from what class is normally like, we started out with a Ballet (?) warm-up and was followed up my Maggie and I stumbling over our own feet for the better part of an hour.

3. Baking pumpkin bread: Man oh man do I love to cook good food, especially when it means I get to share the fruits of my labor with friends. And labor there was. Bulgaria, to my great disappointment, doesn’t have canned pumpkin puree, not Libby’s, not anything. So, Sunday afternoon when I got back from Dobrich I went to town roasting and pureeing the pumpkin that Desi had kindly brought me from her parents’ garden in the village outside Silistra. Then Monday night when I couldn’t sleep I decided to make hulling the walnuts Shauna had brought me from Pravets my midnight activity. Finally, Thursday after school I baked the bread, which was A+. Props to Kyle (who may or may not be a loyal reader) for the truly show-stoppingly delicious recipe and to Schar for the solid gluten-free flour.

4. Sitting on the beach in Varna with some true Fulbright favs: Last Friday I took the shortest bus ride yet (only 1.5 hours!!) to Dobrich to meet up with my friends in the Northeast. On Saturday Thomas, Emily, Alexa, Will, Faith and I took another bus to Varna for the day. The weekend was so low-key and just what I needed. After meeting up with Courtney and Keana we walked around the city and eventually down to the beach. It’s moments like these that I feel the need to pinch myself. How on Earth did I end up on a beach along the Black Sea with some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met. I will sing their praises until the end of time. They are funny, smart, and for some reason voluntarily hang out with me.

5. Earning the much coveted “Super!” from my tambura teacher: It always feels like such a journey to get to lessons on Tuesday nights because it’s already dark out and it’s cold and honestly, I’m kind of a baby. However, every lesson without fail, as soon as I walk into the classroom and start playing, it all feels worth it. And it feels especially worth it when I play a complete Horo as a duet with my teacher and get that sweet, sweet praise that my insecurities crave. It’s funny, but I haven’t felt like this much of a beginner at so many things in such a long time. Not only at Tambura, but also Bulgarian, and teaching, and living alone, and the list keeps going. Most of the time it’s frustrating, but in a lot of ways it’s refreshing. It’s allowed me to be a little more generous in forgiving myself for the mistakes that I make. Wow, that went in a direction that I didn’t expect.
