I. ADAGIO - ALLEGRO NON TROPPO

a toothake never fails to remind you of home, the roots underneath your gums slowly rotting, the pain spreading throughout your jaw. the ache, your body slowly forced to dapt, until the tooth is pulled, and what is left is a gaping hole in between white molars which your tongue catches in when you’re distracted. that hole is your home, where your memories all hide. painful if you press hard enough, always there to remind you of what should’ve been. you run your tongue against the row of teeth, and can almost imagine it still being there, but the feeling is foreign. always will be, when you expect memories to be there where there are none. but not in the way it felt foreign when you were a child loosing your milk teeth. this feeling is coated in a feeling of permanence you experience nowhere else. 

II.  ALLEGRO CON GRAZIA

the paint dries eventually. the rotten walls and floorboards give way to ruin. your childhood morphs into a troubled adolescence, and the fact that you make it out the other end is nothing other than pure luck. you travel the wrong paths, cross the wrong lines, fight the wrong people. for a long time, nobody has your back. but it doesn’t matter, because you can handle yourself. until you can’t.

resentment fills every cavity in your mouth, coats your tongue in a bitter taste. why can they have all the things i can’t? you think, and decide to finally take what is yours. delusions of grandeur run in your family, you would know, if you had ever met your parents. in truth, you have done nothing to deserve what others have, and taking it selfishly has consequences.

blood debts are not easily repaid, you learn. but indeptedness brings structure which helps you flourish. while your fate affords you no arrogance, little princess, you play pretend in your castles of dirt. you can become anyone you want, as long as you try hard enough. all your life you’ve lived in unforgiving conditions: this is nothing new to you. but did you remember how easy it is to lose your grip on reality? no? how sad.

IV. ADAGIO LAMENTOSO

how a beast like you learns to love is a mystery, one you are not keen to figure out. but love has unwanted consequences. it usurps your life, grabs you by the neck, twists until you can no longer breathe. it holds onto you, hangs over you like a thick velvet drape: comforting and suffocating at the same time.

you’ve never been in control. and you aren’t now.  

             now, you are nothing to be afraid of; you have torn yourself in half. strange— almost unearthly, your skin pale white and blossoming in rash. your neck outstretched, you beg for god to deliver her final blow, and for her to relieve you of all your suffering. you were fifteen for twenty years, and twenty-seven for none of them. everyday you reconstruct yourself, slice yourself from your neck to your groin, hoping that you can extract yourself from your own body, and become the monster you want to be.

TLDR for those too tired to decipher purple prose bullshit: daphne was born in são paulo, but remembers little to nothing of her childhood. her father died like many, in a robbery gone wrong. her mother took her and her big brother and fled to england, where the two kids were eventually abandoned and ended up in the system. things never really got better before daphne joined the jolly rogers after killing one of their own in a street fight. she owed a debt and had to repay it with work or her life, it was an easy choice.

this led to her finally finding her place in this world, and for a long time everything went smoothly. until love happened, and it completely took her by surprise. she wasn’t the loving type, but suddenly she was running away from the only family she ever knew (mainly javier) to start a new life with lilli. but, as god or whoever the fuck would have it, things went to shit real quick and a year later daphne’s back in london after losing her eyesight in a fire. she’s insecure and lashing out, struggling to figure out her place after her new disability.

also: she used to have a fucking god complex (still does) but her ego took a severe hit lol. anyway enjoy your local psychopath bisexual trying to tragically navigate their work/life balance while figuring out a healthy relationship with themselves. ripppppp

-jesper and nina were in the same orientation group freshman year - and were, as a result, in the same 0-credit “welcome to being a college student” class that fall - and bonded over shared love of the following: waffles, snobby pop punk, harassing one kaz brekker.

-back in fall of sophomore year nina was taking organic chem and had to swap lab sessions for a day after missing her own because a stomach bug took her out. this new lab period is home to a matthias helvar, who is capital-h Hot, conscientious, really quite smart, and also a bit of an uptight asshole. nina makes it her personal mission to irritate him into having a little fun for once in his life for christ’s sake. by the time our story starts, matthias has been under nina’s dubious tutelage for a whole semester and has 1. quit rotc, 2. joined her theater, 3. had e-fucking-nough of her bullshit making him question everything in his damn life but also like. has some more questions that he thinks she could answer. yknow. carnally. maybe.

-our sweet boy wylan spends one (1) freshman semester doing his level best to just focus on academics and make his dad happy before realizing that this makes him Fucking Miserable and maybe he should find an extracurricular before he has a menty-b. so right after getting back to school he decides he’s gonna audition for the spring musical, which is where he meets jesper and nina!

–wylan and matthias actually live on the same floor in their dorm, but wylan is shy and matthias is. matthias. so they haven’t really spoken much.

–this is going to change if jesper has anything to say about it because he takes one (1) look at this boy and goes. well. i have no choice but to stan. nina if you dont mind helping me out here i think we can abduct him and fully integrate him into our friend group without anyone ever noticing he was gone.

What I think some of the Lolirock characters' sexualities are

In honor of Pride Month I'm going to share my takes on what I think the Lolirock characters' sexualities are. Keep in mind these are all my opinions, so you're obviously allowed to disagree! (However, if I see ANYONE saying that I'm pushing sexuality onto teenagers, just shut up, because you know damn well you wouldn't say anything if I just said all of them were straight; which they're not, by the way; everyone in this show is incredibly fruity)

Iris- Pansexual (I honestly don't think she would care all that much about someone's gender identity, but more about said person's personality). I did briefly consider bisexual with a preference for Nathaniels.

Talia- BISEXUAL. With a preference for girls. And also probably demi (Do I need to explain myself? Of course not). And I thought she was a lesbian at first, but then, you know... KYLE. Lots of love for our beautiful bi icon!

Auriana- Phewwwww, this was a tricky one... on one hand her personality gives off a whole bunch of pan vibes, but I don't wanna dive into stereotypes. Also, the fact that she's constantly ONLY talking about boys?... I don't know... So, I'm not 100% sure, but imma say either bisexual with a preference for guys or straight and bi-curious (feel free to share your thoughts about this one, cause I'm really drawing a blank here).

Praxina- LESBIANNNNNNN (this is probably the only one that isn't debatable for me, I mean, have you seen her?). I literally CANNOT believe that some people still think she's straight, like, HUH-? WHERE? Good god, if you have any doubts that she's into women, I would probably advise you to rewatch the whole show, like, seriously. Maybe try No Thanks for the Memories or Forget You first, since those two are literally her GAYEST episodes. Like, you can't convince me that she wasn't crushing a little bit on Iris at that point. In No Thanks for the Memories, she DIDN'T NEED to spend the full 20 minutes of the episode holding hands with Iris. But this little evil disaster did it anyways. And let's not forget all the blushing in Forget You. Characters in this show don't usually blush, UNLESS it's because they're crushing on or experiencing romantinc feelings for someone. Honestly, it makes me really sad that some people in this fandom are purposely ignoring all of the meaningful interactions she's had with GIRLS in this show, and just deciding to smash her together with some random guy, she has never even spoken to. Like, I love crack ships, I really do, but you can see why this kind of thing is a little disheartening. It's like they ran out of important male characters to ship her with, so they just picked a random dude. But anyways... bless her in all her gayness!

Mephisto- Bisexual, I think. With a preference for women (he had that little crush on Auriana, so we know he's into women). He could be straight, ofc, but he honestly gives me bi vibes. He even did that little "💅" like two or three times. Though I do understand why he's usually shipped especially with the three main princesses, and that's because (let's be honest) he is the only well developed male character that we have. He has depth, he has charisma, he has humor, he's not just a one-dimensional character. And there aren't a lot of other equally explored boys in this show except maybe Nathaniel and Lev. But neither of those four two have actually interacted with Mephisto for more than a few seconds, which makes it more difficult for people to ship him with any of them.

Lyna- I'm gonna piss off a lot of Lynissa shippers out there, I already know it, but I'm pretty sure Lyna is straight. She's definetly a huge ally tho.

Carissa- Asexual and biromantic, I don't make the rules. I can't explain, it's the vibes.

Nathaniel- either straight or pan. i don't have an explanation for this one.

Gramorr- Bi. He definetly used to have some sort of thing with the King of Ephidea at some point. And Morgane. I must clarify that, as a member of the community, I most definetly do NOT claim him.

RESEARCHING STORYBOARD ARTISTS

in order to talk about storyboarding - I think it’s important to put some names to work; which is what sometimes goes unnoticed in our field - so today I set out to find some story-board artists I like, through their work.

Joseph "Joe" Roland Barbera (March 24, 1911 – December 18, 2006) 

an American animator, director, producer, storyboard artist, and cartoon artist, who co-founded the animation studio and production company Hanna-Barbera.

Hayao Miyazaki / 宮崎 駿 (January 5, 1941) 

a Japanese animator, director, producer, screenwriter, author, and manga artist, who co-founded Studio Ghibli, and has attained international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and creator of Japanese animated feature films, and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished filmmakers in the history of animation.

Elmer Earl "Butch" Hartman IV (January 10, 1965)

Who is your main cast? Describe as many of your OCs as you can cram into one post.

time to meet the gang from a kingdom betrayed!! (both helen and cory have actual intro posts which i'll link lol,, i still need to finish the others)

MAIN CHARACTERS

Sir Helen Mast: [she/her | 24 years old | asexual lesbian]

Helen is the narrator! She's been a knight for six years now (she became a squire when she was 12, and was knighted when she was 18) and has been employed at the palace for three years! Helen's parents died when she was very little (their town was raided) and she was raised by her father's best friend. She's loyal, protective and hard working BUT tends to have a very black and white way of thinking and has some issues letting others take charge in a situation. She has a Shire horse named Whiskey! He was a gift from her foster father when she was knighted

Cordelia "Cory" Langston: [she/her | 25 years old | bisexual]

Cory is a gardener at the palace and Helen's best friend! Cory's mother worked at the palace, so she and her brother grew up in the palace! Cory's brother moved out when he turned eighteen to move in with his then boyfriend (and later husband) but Cory stayed with her mother. She started working under the head gardener when she was 14 and fell in love with the job! Cory is optimistic, outgoing and knows a lot about nature. But she tends to be impatient, stubborn and blunt. Cory also has the tendency to adopt any animal that crosses her path, especially if they're injured.

Moss Pennbrook: [they/them | 24 years old | nonbinary bisexual]

Moss is our resident bard! Their parents were apart of a traveling theatre troupe, so Moss was pretty much destined to be a theater kid. They grow up traveling all over the kingdom, which Moss loves because they get to see so many different places!! They strike off on their own when they're 20, and continue to travel. Moss ends up helping Helen and Cory out of trouble, and asks to join their quest because they want to go on an adventure!! Moss is smart, good in a fight and witty. However, they tend to jump headfirst into situations without bothering to think about the consequences (what do you MEAN there are consequences for your actions??) Moss can play several instruments, but their favorite is the violin :)

Tabitha "Tabby" Fairburn: [she/her | 27 years old | trans lesbian]

Tabby is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, and a very powerful witch! She lives with her mother and several of her sisters in a cottage near the outskirts of the kingdom. She's the official "protector" of her town, having taken over after the last protector disappeared into the mountains. Tabby's passionate, quick thinking and protective of her friends/family. She's also very good at improvising, and uses her magic in very creative ways to get out of trouble. She has trouble trusting newcomers; as the town's protector she's always on alert for potential attacks. Her familiar is a ferret named Felix! Tabby found him in town when she was younger and they've been inseparable ever since :)

SIDE CHARACTERS (that are still important to the plot)

Emory Warren: [she/they | 22 years old | trans fem nonbinary asexual]

Emory is also a knight at the palace! She's pretty new and has only been working for a year or so. They were recruited to the palace guard around the same times as Helen, and the two became quick friends. Emory is promoted to the prince's personal guard halfway through the novel, as the old guard was pretty much all killed in the attack which is a huge promotion for her! They become an important player in the second half of the book. Emory is a very positive person, and is usually very cheerful. They're also pretty good at healing. Their mother was a nurse, and taught Emory everything she could. Emory has some trouble fighting with weapons; she's far more skilled at hand-to-hand combat. Emory ends up teaching Levi how to fight, because he desperately needs lessons.

Prince Levi Sherridan: [he/him | 17 years old | gay]

Levi is the only son of the king and heir to the throne! He's attacked at the very beginning of the novel, and it's this attack that kicks off the events of the novel! He becomes an important player in the second half of the book. A lot of his time is taken up by learning everything he can about being king (all about the justice system, the economic status of the kingdom, how to work with other countries, etc) but Levi tries to take time to actually visit the different towns in the kingdom so he can see for himself what's going on. He's soft spoken and genuinely tries to be the best ruler he can. He's book smart, but that's pretty much it. He has no clue how to hold his own in a fight, but he still has time to learn :)

WHAT'S THE NOVEL?? spill the tea, sis.

oKAY SO my novel!!! it has been living in my head since i was thirteen and it has gone through so many drafts and beginnings over the years until last year i sat down and actually began writing it.

i've briefly spoken about it here and here also :) (that summary/pitch is a bit dated, still accurate tho!)

Forged of Stars and Bone (originally: Star Forged) is winding up to be 100k of wlw badasses, magic, flying cats, demons, dragons, huge glowing mushrooms, lesbian pirates, mermaids, found family, sacrifices, women with WEAPONS, eaten gods (and not), and finding oneself but also falling in love.

it starts with Hala, a runaway princess from the age eleven, who is one of the last Demon Summoner mages, and is still being hunted down by the king's Royal Guard because magic is forbidden in Anamel (one of the three kingdoms of the continent Arelia). Hala is in possession of a staff carved full of Demon Symbols so that she may call upon her beasties (aka: her family in every sense of the word. She hears their voices in her head all day, everyday LOL)

Then enter Keyara— the very last Demon Slayer mage with the unholy power of Fire— and Cegon— a very large pather with huge bat wings— who are the remaining of the hidden Demon Slayer population and have been hunting for those who destroyed their home for three years. (Keyara has a HUGE battle hammer that glows purple and is super fucking cool. Cegon is more of a pacifist and mother hen so no fighting for him)

Hala is twenty-four. Keyara and Cegon are twenty-six.

They meet by chance (or is it fate?) and end up saving each other from their own pursers. Then, ultimately they end up traveling together when Hala gets a message from her dear friend Tania, the Fae Queen of Nim (found on the continent Ackilenda) about an incoming threat and needs Hala's aid immediately.

There we meet not only Tania (one of my favorites because i just love her) but the Brothers Grim (!!!!!!!! I LOVE) who are very well known Generals of past wars and have made a name for themselves. Ajal is the leader, also known as the Defyer of Death ;). Col is our loveable tank of a man, Boarheart is his alias. Then Helyas is my Shadow Master and dry but witty-humored, skinny man. Each has their own named and very respected weapons.

(There is so much i can say about Tania + the Brothers Grim that i would need to make a new post LMAO so sorry for rambling)

There is so much world building and so many fun characters in this little project of mine and just!!! Self love and healing!!!! Most characters here are POC and queer. Tania is blind and I have a BAMF Fae General (Kaida) who is deaf, a transgender lesbian pirate (who is a runaway lord's child), many nonbinary characters also. Like!!!! It's honestly just super indulgent LOL

oh! Hala is demisexal while as Keyara is a raging bisexual :)

And the villain isn't your traditional one either, which i really really love. Spoilers! but basically our antagonist is a child who is being manipulated by one of my favorite Dark Demons (Thalgrokar) for timely revenge for something very important ;)))

Literally i could go on forever about this novel, i love talking about it and it's currently in its second draft! Though, i'm starting it from a totally different place than the first so it's giving me some real issues but!! I am so excited to dive into this world and characters again.

also this is the playlist for FOSAB! BUT YEAH i just kind of info dumped the basics of this (and favorite tidbits) but if you have any specific questions i will gladly answer!! this has been living in my head for years upon years now and just! getting it out has been the best experience :))

"Tadaima," Asahi called out. He came home a little late tonight, as he had to stay behind at work.

"Okaeri, love," you call back to him from the kitchen, while you finish cleaning up from your latest pastry experiment.

"Whipping up something new again?" he asked, before kissing the top of your head.

I always start out with the physical stuff first and I'm just going to say that Brian really likes your hair! Thinks it is absolutely gorgeous and fun. Will compliment how fluffy it is. ALright, I feel like swimming outings would be a thing between the two of you. Brian likes water. It's just the vibe I get. Make him flower crowns please lmfao. Brian is soft and actual sunshine when he wants to be. He will watch the sunrise and sunset with you!!! He loves to just strum his guitar in the early mornings, listening to the birds sing. Y'know, I think the only thing that might be a bit of a talking point between the two of you is the not having kids thing. Brian strikes me as such a strong family man. However, I don't think he's incapable of bending, so if the two of you want to be fur parents, he'd be just fine with that. Other than that, one of Brian's love languages is touch to like, be prepared for hugs, kisses, all that wholesome stuff. He's definitely a bit of an insomniac so like, please spend time with him cuddling on the roof while the two of you talk about anything and everything. Brian will definitely cook and bake with you as well, seeing those are two things he loves to do. You won't ever have to worry about jealousy with Brian because he's a king of "I have a partner stop speaking to me :)" You can also spoon him, he'd find that comforting. Brian prioritizes communication, so if you start crying, or anything like that, he'll give you some space and then come back to it. He doesn't want to cause you any harm, but some things need to be spoken about. Brian will also be your rock if the two of you go out in public and you're not very happy or overwhelmed. I swear, he's always going to be there for you.

Hi love bug, sorry this is late. The matchups were giving me some wonky type of burn out, but it's here now. To answer your thing about why animals don't need toothpaste, it actually has a lot to do with their diet! They don't eat refined sugars or the high amount of acids we do, and they also tend to eat way more twigs, sticks, bark, bones and even grass that help keep their mouths free of debris. Tell me about your characters and stories! One of my favorite things to do outside of running this blog is OCs and world building. Again, apologies for this being late. So @singledarkshade​ has a Dream Movie challenge where we are given 6 actors from our favorite TV shows (or movies), a wildcard actor, and an object that should be incorporated into the plot. 

I decided to make my movie blurb and character descriptions like a “case file” of suspects as my movie is about a Private Investigator team, so enjoy! :) 

CASEFILE: King Investigations is the best investigative group in the country, and they are taking on so-called “unsolvable” cases, refusing new cases until they solve the one they have. One day, an envelope containing $5,000 is slid under their door alongside a note on a strip of paper. The request? To solve the murder of their recently deceased employee. The problem? Every employee of King Investigations is alive and accounted for, so they quickly get on the case - to solve why one of their own is getting murdered, and stop it before it happens.

SUSPECT: Stephanie Beatriz as Aimee Gonzalez 

Role: Technology specialist

Background: Suspect was hired 5 years ago after offering up her services for a case where a woman had been missing for 43 years. She solved the case within 24 hours of joining the team as a liaison and was immediately offered a full-time position at King Investigations. 

Characteristics: An expert at finding someone, if you’ve left even a trace of yourself online she will work tirelessly to find you. Suspect’s favorite color is pink and seems to have a splash of pink on her at all times, alongside any decorations she ever has laying around. The suspect is an out and proud bisexual woman. Suspect seems bright and bubbly, constantly hugging the other suspects and loudly proclaiming her love for them in public. Genuine happiness or an attempt to throw off the case from herself?

Role: Founder of King Investigations

Background: Suspect founded King Investigations roughly 10 years ago, but has a PI background spanning two decades. He previously worked for Perry Co., but left under good terms to create the company with his husband, co-worker, and new employee. 

Characteristics: Suspect is a blunt, to-the-point PI who excels at investigating cases, but is not so great on the whole empathy thing. He is meticulous in every detail, and unlike Suspect Gonzalez’s tech-savviness, prefers everything traditional and vintage - from his work method to his clothes to his furniture. He comes off as sarcastic and dick-ish, and he is, but he’s also fiercely loyal and firmly believes in getting justice in every case. He will not give up, no matter how little he has to go on. 

Close Relationships: James King (husband), Lily Mullins (best friend), Aimee Gonzalez (best friend), Andrew Perry (mentor) 

SUSPECT: Michiel Huisman as James King 

Role: PI - particularly skilled in surveillance 

Background: Suspect has been working at King Investigations for 10 years, and like his husband, he migrated over from Perry Co. 

Characteristics: The more grounded counter to his husband, the suspect is a more quiet investigative sort, who also specializes in something that comes a bit harder to his husband - empathy. His role seems to involve trailing individuals and smoothing over any issues that arise, whether they be due to the case or Suspect Adam King’s own behavior. Further information on the suspect could not be found at this time. 

Close relationships: Adam King (husband), Clancy White (confidant), Andrew Perry (close friend) 

SUSPECT: Malcolm Goodwin as Clancy White

Role: “Bodyguard”, particularly skilled in combat 

Background: Suspect has been working at King Investigations for the shortest amount of time (2 years). Suspect began as the King Investigation team’s chief suspect in an unsolved murder, which he was promptly cleared of when the true murderer cornered Suspects Mullins and Adam King, and White apprehended them. He was offered a job shortly after. Suspect does not have a PI license and is instead employed as a “bodyguard” for the Kings, although he freely aids in investigations behind-the-scenes. 

Characteristics: Suspect is soft-spoken and quiet, but seems to attempt to match the personality and energy of whoever is speaking to him. Suspect is an aromantic man who entered into a queerplatonic relationship with suspect Nelly Johnson, and now lives with Nelly Johnson and Lily Mullins. 

Close Relationships: Nelly Johnson (partner), Lily Mullins (friend), James King (best friend) 

SUSPECT: Emmy Raver-Lampman as Nelly Johnson 

Role: Forensic specialist 

Background: Suspect is the one who originally came up with the idea of King Investigations, though she never worked at Perry Co. Suspect worked at the police department for 5 years and became frustrated with the department, and suggested to King and her now-wife (then girlfriend) Mullins that she would gladly work with them under their own company. Suspect immediately quit her department job after King Investigations was founded. 

Characteristics: Suspect is sharp-witted and seems to match King’s wit. She is clearly confident and has an inquisitive mind, constantly checking and re-checking every bit of evidence that comes her way. 

Close relationships: Lily Mullins (wife), Clancy White (partner), Aimee Gonzalez (friend) 

SUSPECT: Isla Fischer as Lily Mullins 

Role: PI at King Investigations

History: Suspect has been working at King Investigations for a decade. Much like the others, she migrated over from Perry Co. Out of the original founders, she has the least experience as an investigator, having started as an intern for only a few months before moving to King Investigations. 

Characteristics: Suspect is sharp-tongued and has a good poker face. She seems to have strong combat skills and is exceptionally manipulating others into giving her information. She and her wife recently moved in with Clancy White. Suspect is seemingly always on guard, scanning for danger in even the most mundane circumstances. Suspect should be watched closely. 

Close relationships: Nelly Johnson (wife), Clancy White (close friend), Adam King (best friend), Andrew Perry (mentor) 

SUSPECT: Harrison Ford as Andrew Perry 

Role: Former head of Perry Co.

Background: Suspect is the mentor to the Kings and Mullins, who all used to work for him before moving on to create King Investigations. Perry retired shortly before the three announced their business. 

Characteristics: He acts as a father figure to these suspects King(s) and Mullins, and sees them regularly, as well as occasionally visiting the other team members. Suspect seemed reluctant to come out of retirement when the investigative team asked him to come out of retirement to help solve the case, but did so upon realizing that it was a life-or-death situation. Suspect seems reserved, but clearly cares for the founding investigators. 

Close relationships: Adam King (mentee), Lily Mullins (mentee), James King (close friend) 

Item - Lamp 

The lamp is remarked upon by every single member of the investigative team. Clancy believes Aimee brought it in, due to her love of pink. Nelly believes Adam brought it in with his love of vintage materials, Adam believes it was Clancy due to his poor taste in decorations, etc. Each team member has an off-hand comment on how ugly the lamp looks before moving on. 

BONUS: Plot summary (with some scenes written in because I couldn’t help myself) 

We start off with a news-voiceover on King Investigation’s latest bust as we see the team stopping a potential murder. The reporter briefly introduces each character (as we see each doing their own thing in the case), and through the voiceover, we see the team turning in the suspect to the police, as well as discovering valuables of their client’s. She thanks them and provides them with a hefty sum of money. The reporter says the team has solved yet another seemingly unsolveable case and preventing a murder to boot, while we see the team begin to move furniture into a new building. As the voiceover speaks about their professionalism, we see Nelly and Adam arguing, and Nelly throwing out an old vase. Aimee sits on the curb, watching the group arguing and struggling to carry the furniture into the house. The voiceover begins to praise the team for their hard work and perserverance, as we see Clancy turn to Aimee and motion towards the furniture, at which point she shrugs and offers him the chips she has been eating. He accepts and sits down next to her. 

The beginning half hour shows the dynamics within the team - a team that seems to bicker constantly, but are obviously very close with one another. They are at lunch with their former boss, Andrew Perry, when he asks how the move is going: 

[The team is clustered around a round table outside. CLANCY is holding NELLY’s hand. LILY has a pleasant smile on her face, but she is looking beyond the group, her eyes scanning the area. ADAM has his legs stretched out, prompting an eye roll from AIMEE, and JAMES has made himself as small as possible, crossing his legs to provide AIMEE more room. ANDREW sits next to AIMEE, looking at the group with an amused smile] 

ADAM: It’s splendid, really, Andrew, save for Nelly throwing out my furniture yet again - 

NELLY: If you get one more ugly-ass vintage piece I am throwing it out, I swear to God. 

ADAM, indignant: I - ugly? These are pieces of history. 

[ADAM processes that NELLY said she would throw out his pieces] 

ADAM: And excuse me? Throw out the furniture I bring into my office? Need I remind you that I am the boss? 

NELLY [mocking ADAM’s indignant tone]: Need I remind you King Investigations wouldn’t even be a thing if I didn’t suggest it? 

[ANDREW laughs and excuses himself to flag down a waiter and get another round of drinks for the table. As he leaves, ADAM and NELLY have a stare down while the rest of the group ignores them. AIMEE reaches over JAMES to steal a fry from ADAM’s plate, but he swats her hand away, never breaking eye contact. The music swells, until finally -] 

NELLY: Fine. I won’t throw away your stupid vintage shit. 

ADAM: Aha! See, this is why I am the boss, everyone.

[The group ignores him, and JAMES grabs two fries from ADAM’s plate, giving one to AIMEE] 

The team gets settled in, setting up security measures, adjusting things around the office, and giving Perry a tour. We see them in a fully furnished office, pouring over what case they want to take on next. Lily pauses for a moment, thinking she’s heard something, but brushes off the feeling and continues on. The team falls silent when Clancy notices a letter that has slid under their door, alongside an envelope with $50,000 in cash with the message: 

CLANCY [with a confused, questioning tone]: My deepest condolences to losing a member of your investigative team, I trust this amount will be enough for you to uncover who carried out this plot, the remainder will be delivered to you upon the completion of the case? 

[AIMEE furrows her eyebrows and quickly counts up each member in the room]

AIMEE: Well unless one of us drops in the next 5 seconds, I’d say we’re all pretty alive. 

CLANCY: Maybe it’s a joke? 

JAMES [gesturing to the money]: It is a very expensive joke. 

The team determines that the note was sent in advance because somewhere, the murderer’s plot went wrong, and so they work with two goals in mind: Figure out who is getting murdered, and why. 

JAMES: First, we have to figure out who is most likely to be our victim. 

[All eyes turn to ADAM, who is intently pouring over the letter. He stops when he hears the lack of silence, and glares at them] 

ADAM: Oh come on now, I get the job done. 

NELLY: I say this with love, but you’re an asshole, Adam. I think every case we’ve ever worked has at least one person who threatened to kill you. 

LILY: And twice it was the victim we were saving. 

ADAM: Well that’s just - 

NELLY [muttering]: I’d kill you myself over your shitty home decor choices. 

[NELLY briefly motions to the garish pink lamp in the corner, but ADAM is not paying attention, because his attention is on JAMES, who has turned to write down ADAM’s name at the top of his whiteboard, and ADAM gives a sound of protest. JAMES looks back at his husband, an apologetic look on his face.] 

JAMES: Sorry, Adam. You know it’s true. 

ADAM [sighs, waving his hand at the board]: Fine, put me on the board. 

[JAMES writes down ADAM’s name at the top of the whiteboard, then underlines his name three times]

Throughout the movie, the team works to identify who the victim could be. Clancy and Lily tail the Kings, convinced that it is Adam or James who are the intended victims. Adam and Aimee work on the idea that it could be due to one of their past cases, and James and Nelly track down the man who sent the letter - a recent British immigrant who claims that he was told to do so and paid by an anonymous caller and that he never got the face. He admits he realized he got the date wrong - 5/6/2021 instead of 6/5/2021, and they realize it is a month before the supposed murder is supposed to take place. 

Coming to a pause in their investigation, James, Lily, and Adam ask Andrew for help. He is reluctant but agrees. The group continues on, getting frustrated as they track down lead after lead without any further break. It comes to a head when: 

[ADAM slams down a file in frustration, and the other members look up, frustration etched onto their faces as well.] 

ADAM: There’s nothing. There probably will be nothing until the murder is supposed to happen. 

[CLANCY sighs and leans his head back, wincing when he hits the pink lamp]

CLANCY: Okay, I know that you love pink, Aimee, but this is ugly even with the color scheme. 

[The team has a confused look on their faces, and AIMEE and ADAM speak at the same time] 

AIMEE: No, Lily brought it in -                    ADAM: Wait, you didn’t bring it?

LILY: Why would I bring this -                     CLANCY: Definitely didn’t, man.

[There is a brief pause as each team member processes, and the team speaks over one another] 

JAMES: I had just assumed Clancy brought it in as well - 

NELLY: Okay, I thought it was Adam. Figured he was just trying to rile me up with his weird furniture.

ADAM: I have taste, Nelly - 

[LILY shushes the group] 

LILY: So none of us bought this lamp in? 

[The group stares at the lamp, and LILY writes on a slip of paper. The other members write as well, understanding that there may be a bug in the lamp, and Nelly grabs her materials to investigate the lamp.] 

As the group continues, they find a listening device in the lamp. Aimee works to trace where it came from, but Adam stops her, and looks to Lily and James, a look of understanding passing between them, as they all recognize and used to use this type of listening device before - at Perry Co. They dig into Andrew and find out that he was not intending to retire until he found out about King Investigations - a week prior to them actually telling him of their plan, and a former colleague tells them that Perry had lamented that if Nelly hadn’t brought up the idea, this never would have happened. They determine that Nelly is his target and start their plan. 

The next scene, Andrew is visiting the office to help with the case. The team confronts him, laying down the evidence: 

ADAM [his eyes are teary, but his tone is angry and cold]: Rather clever of you, got the lamp in what, during the final move? And you listened to us so you’d be ahead of us every step of the way. 

AIMEE: Once we figured out it was you, it was all too easy to track the phone you used to contact [letter sender]. 

LILY [her tone biting]: And we asked you for help. You played hesitant, but we offered you up the case on a silver platter. 

JAMES: And we know exactly who you were trying to kill. 

[The music swells, and ANDREW’s shoulders slump. He knows that he’s been found out. He and ADAM speak at the same time.]

ADAM: Nelly                                               ANDREW [resigned]: Myself 

[There is a pause, and then JAMES speaks, surprise clear in his voice for the first time in the movie] 

JAMES: What?  

From here, we have the conclusion - Andrew admits that he doesn’t hate Nelly, he respects her for understanding when a change needs to occur. He hadn’t planned on retiring until he found out he was losing his best detectives, but he didn’t want them to go onto their new job with any hesitations or regrets, so he announced his retirement earlier than planned. There was just one problem - he began missing his detectives, who he had come to view as pseudo-children. 

Andrew put a plan into place - he would prove, as Aimee did all those years ago, that he could be useful to the team. He concocted a plan where he would fake his death and lead the team down different twists and turns until they found the culprit, at which point he would reveal himself to be alive. Unfortunately, his letter was delivered far too early, and Andrew had to intervene wherever he could in the investigation. 

ADAM: I can’t believe this. 

ANDREW: I know, I know, it was stupid, I just wanted to show you I was sharp and could still do it. 

ADAM: You could have just applied, like a normal person. 

ANDREW: I could have, but that wouldn’t be nearly as fun, would it? 

JAMES: A murder plot is not fun, Andrew. 

The team forgives Andrew, knowing that his intentions were good, but say that they need a bit of time before seeing him again, and he agrees. In the last act a few months later, they are having lunch again, sans Andrew. They return to the office. When they open the door, they see a paper, and Adam sighs before he realizes what it is. It’s a job application, filled out with a resume for an Andrew Perry attached, and he grins. 

[ADAM picks up his phone and sits down, the ugly pink lamp right next to him, and the phone rings, until someone picks up.] 

ADAM [smiling]: Hello there, I’m calling to follow up with your application to King Investigations. It is rather impressive, and we’d like to call you in for an interview.

[Muffled sounds of a voice coming through the phone, and ADAM grins wider] 

ADAM: Wonderful, we’ll see you at 8 AM sharp tomorrow. We look forward to having you on board Mr. Perry
